name noun \’nām\ 3 b: an illustrious record: fame <made a name for himself in golf>*

There are a significant number of people throughout history whose names conjure more than a simple recognition or remembrance. Hearing names such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Albert Einstein, and Steve Jobs makes us remember not just the individuals, but the difference they made in our world and the influence they had on society. We associate their names with their extraordinary lives.

What made these individuals stand out was not only their visionary nature, but the way they were able to communicate their visions so effectively and so broadly. I think deep down, every one of us is a visionary, which is good, because having

a vision is important to our lives and our careers. The first step in achieving a successful career is knowing where we want to go and what we want to accomplish. If you haven’t done so already, ask yourself: what are my long-term goals? What do I foresee for the future? Hopefully, your visions include climbing the Company ladder, building and strengthening your team, and making a name for yourself with Liberty National.

In order to be successful in your pursuits, you must be open and clear about your goals. Whether you’re an Agent, a Supervising Agent, an Agency Director, or an Agency Owner, it’s up to you to communicate with those around you so you are more able to accomplish your objectives. Are you an Agent with a plan to advance your career? Are you in the bullpen with plans to run your own successful Agency in the near future? Then talk to your peers and your supervisors … talk to Steve … talk to me! You have so many resources to help you make your dreams come true, but you’ll only find help from others if they know what those dreams are. So speak up and never, ever stray from your goals. Focus on your dream and give 100 percent until you find success. (And then set out for something even bigger.)

It’s also important you vocalize your goals to positive people who can and will help you succeed. If your words are falling on deaf ears, you might as well be talking to yourself. You know the people in your

profession and in your life who will be advantageous to your career pursuits, so make it a priority to surround yourself with them and to count on their support in your endeavors. A positive mentor can help you prepare for the next step in your career; a positive peer can offer advice in areas you might struggle with; and a positive family member can give emotional support while you’re working hard to reach your goals. My point is, people in different areas of your life can bolster and encourage you, so seek them out and let them know what’s on your radar.

I know we all face hardships and obstacles that might make it more difficult to have the life or career we envision. But even though life sometimes holds unforeseen or uncontrollable circumstances, we need to control what we can. We can control being ambitious, having a dream, and working hard to make that dream come true; we can control the people we choose to include in our career plans; and we can control the amount of positive influence we get, both from within ourselves and from those around us.

If you truly want to make a name for yourself (and I hope you do), it’s completely up to you what kind of name that will be. It’s in your power to make your name one people will associate with success. If you want to climb the Company ladder or if you want to move from bullpen to Agency Owner with flying colors, be open and be courageous. Right now is your chance to make your vision known and make your vision a reality. Your future is yours to create … how do you want your name defined?

How I Made a Name for Myself as an Agency Owner

Heath JohnseyAgency OwnerVirginia Beach, VAlibertynational-johnsey.com

Before I found my career with Liberty National, I spent 16 years in upper management in the automotive manufacturing industry. I was enticed to join Liberty National because of the Opportunity of a Lifetime. After working 14 hours a day, seven days a week, and traveling much of the time, I decided to leave my job, not knowing what I was going to do next.

I attended a career briefing for Liberty National and talked everything over with my wife, who was very excited about the new opportunity. I was immediately captivated by the idea that I could move up as quickly as I wanted in the Company, be worth as much as I wanted to be, and one day become an Agency Owner.

I have always wanted to own my own business. Typically when someone starts a business there’s so much cost up front. Because of this, I could never take the leap and be a business owner like I wanted to. That is, until I found Liberty National. I was interested in accomplishing my growth goals from the first day, because I wanted to control my own destiny. I saw the opportunity to do just that with Liberty National.

When I chose where I wanted to move and open my Agency, there were no limits. Virginia Beach is close to my hometown, and the city’s population is unbelievable. We’re surrounded by seven cities with various industries. I picked somewhere I love that would be a great place to live and do business. For anyone wanting to become an Agency Owner or deciding where you want to open an office, I advise you to think about the places you enjoy and just go for it. Make the change and make success happen for you!

Becoming an Agency Owner is based on determination and hard work. Now that I have my own Agency, I get to grow my team and help others benefit financially for themselves and their families. And that’s the best part of my job. I get to train future leaders and watch hardworking individuals grow and accomplish their dreams with the Company. It’s also amazing to know our products help people and families get coverage at an affordable price. It’s my Agency that gets to provide this protection to consumers.

My advice to Agents working toward becoming an Agency Owner would be to hit the ground running with determination and know that nothing can stand in the way of you having a fulfilling career. Set goals and make a name for yourself. Don’t let anything limit or deter you from the path to success.

When you limit yourself, you limit potential for Agents beneath you. As an Agency Owner, you need to show your team unlimited potential and let them see that firsthand in your accomplishments, attitude, and dedication. We all have unlimited capabilities here, and we owe it to ourselves to take advantage of them. You can make as much money as you want to make and be exactly who you want to be in your career with Liberty National.

I am so lucky to be with a Company that asked me, ‘What do you want to do?’ I’ve never had the opportunity to decide that for myself before now. I have all the freedom to make my own choices and weigh important decisions.

I want unlimited team members in my office, and I want to be number one. I want to lead the Company! I want to continue making a name for myself and establishing my legacy. I encourage you to live and work without limits. Always make a name for yourself. Take the leap and get ready to enjoy the exciting changes you can experience as an Agency Owner.

Set goals and make a name for yourself. Don’t let anything limit or deter you from the path to success.

Liberty National Book ClubExecution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done

With the holiday season upon us, it can become difficult to find the time, energy, and focus to accomplish everything a successful career and our family duties demand of us.

In this month’s Book Club read, authors Larry Bossidy, Ram Charan, and Charles Burck, all three business leaders themselves, offer professional insight on making results happen in business. They advise readers to become actively involved in their companies, ensuring their visions are not just known by fellow workers, but achieved. As a Liberty National leader, it’s your job to delegate important pieces of the puzzle to others to help your team get to the top and accomplish everything that’s required to be the best. One person can’t do it all, but a team can accomplish a lot!

Whether it’s a tough decision or a small setback, leaders need to step in, make tough calls, and make sure their team follows through. Each management level in your Agency is important, but how do you know each level is actively growing if you’re not involved? Just because you have a good strategy doesn’t mean it will work without proper execution.

The management guide allows readers to look deeper into their teams and pinpoint where task delegation is needed for operations to go according to plan. Do you have this type of culture in your Agency? With direct goals, the right people, and someone to manage the progress, you can make all the parts of your business run together smoothly.

Read the book? Have a comment? Join the discussion on the blog!

From John Maxwell’s The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership

“A life isn’t significant except for its impact on other lives.”

- Jackie Robinson, American Baseball Hall of Famer

A leader’s lasting value is measured by succession. To make an impact as a leader on a future generation, be intentional about your legacy. You have a choice about the legacy you leave, so work to leave the legacy you want. To accomplish that, you must lead your life, not simply accept your life. To create your legacy, live it first. Be proactive about how you live and live what you say you believe. Only then do you have credibility as a leader. Someday people will summarize your life in a single sentence. Decide now what you want that sentence to be!

A team of good leaders is needed in order to succeed. You don’t succeed in life or in business within a vacuum. Surround yourself with people who have leadership quality and share your vision or a similar vision in terms of their own legacy. By helping you succeed now, they help themselves succeed in the future.

Develop your successor. Choose who will carry on your legacy, because a legacy lives on in people, not things. Too often leaders put their energy into organizations, buildings, or other lifeless objects. But only people live on after you are gone. Everything else is temporary.

Know when to walk away. This is difficult for any great leader. Before you walk away, start the process of ‘passing the baton’, because no matter how well you lead, you will not leave the legacy you desire if you fail to pass the baton.

Remember, our ability as leaders is not measured by the buildings we build or the institutions we establish. We are judged by how well the people we invest in carry on after we are gone.

THE LAW OF LEgAcy #21

You have the opportunity at Liberty National to create a legacy for yourself, your family, and our Company. It’s time to decide what that legacy will be.

#LLA301 – Top Gun

Congrats to our #LLA301 graduates! They’re preparing to become AOs. Which one of these Agency Directors do you think we’ll see at next year’s Agency Owner meeting?

In October, a VIP group of Agency Directors attended #LLA301 at the Home Office. This invitation-only ‘Top Gun’ event focused on in-depth skill evaluation, developing winners, accountability, and strategy building.

Agency Owners have been trying to out-produce competitors in net submit production for the 12-week Shine Your Shoes contest. The losing Agency Owners had to shine the shoes of each winning Agency Owner at the meeting. Take a look at some of the candid shots we got!

Liberty National Agency Owners and spouses partnered with Operation Homefront of Texas to assemble 25 bikes for OH’s Holiday Toy Distribution program. $20,140 in donations were raised, including bikes and matching funds from Torchmark. Home Depot donated tool bags to distribute with the bikes.

AOs Jessica Hubley and Randy Davis shining Chris Graham’s shoes.

AOs Tim Nuckolls and Brian Cannington AOs Jeff Miller and Sherri Young. Sherri got the pedicure she wanted.

Director Mitch Phelps blinged-out this bike with pink streamers.

Girls just wanna have fun! Thanks to all the Agency Owners who helped make this event so spectacular!

Liberty National recently teamed with a Torchmark sister

Company on a Closer to the Heart project. With matching

funds from Torchmark, more than $45,000 was raised to

sponsor a Fidelco puppy from birth through two years of

training. Fidelco is an organization that breeds and trains

German Shepherds as guide dogs for the visually impaired.

Donations provide a visually impaired recipient with the

priceless gift of companionship and visionary aide to live

more independently.

Stay tuned as we watch Bernard grow

and serve. Learn more about Fidelco at

What Can You Do NOW?The end of a challenging year is upon us ... a year that has seen many changes and evolution, a year in which many of you have grown both professionally and personally. Admittedly, our collective results certainly don’t reflect that across the board. However, November is the appropriate time to evaluate where you are now and where you want to be in 2014. It’s important you finish the year strong, because the way you complete 2013 determines how you start 2014. Are you where you want and need to be? Is your Agency where it wants and needs to be? If not, what can you do NOW … what can you do TODAY to make a difference tomorrow … and in the months and years ahead?

Before you can successfully answer that, you need to determine if something is holding you back. Is something preventing you and your fellow Agency members from achieving complete and total success every day? I believe it comes down to recognizing and controlling the foundation of sales … activity. No matter what kind of sales you’re in, your success generally comes down to how much activity you generate. Whether it’s selling widgets or selling insurance, less activity equals fewer sales; more activity equals increased sales. It’s as simple as that.

One of the best ways to generate increased activity is to collect referrals. We talk a lot about the importance of asking for referrals, but are you actually doing it? And are you collecting enough referrals? A Monday afternoon appointment can give you enough referral activity for the rest of the week, or the rest of the month. Even if you don’t make a sale, you can still ask for referrals. The product may not be right for your prospect, but it may be perfect for Mr. Smith down the block. If you demonstrate a positive attitude and are respectful to your prospect, you can still get referrals, even if you don’t make that particular sale.

We’re not yet where we need to be in terms of recruiting and coding, but we’re going in the right direction. The number of newly hired Agents is increasing weekly on a regular basis along with the number of codes. We want this trend to continue, so it becomes more than a trend. We want this to be the norm week after week and month after month.

What else can you do? Keep your team members fired up about reinstating lapsed business. The contest is over, but the effort must continue. These lapsed policyholders know you; they know the products you offer; they know Liberty National is a quality Company. With all those positives already in place, you’re halfway there to getting that customer back on board.

Organize promotions within your Agency, and not just for the overall Agency. Have your Agency Directors and Supervising Agents set up individual challenges and promotions within their own teams. Get their competitive juices flowing as you pit them against one another. Which team can recruit the most new Agents? Which team can recruit the most new Agents who code within the first month? Your object is always to have as many Agents as possible in the field submitting business. Get everyone in your Agency involved in the recruiting and coding process, and your numbers and Liberty National’s numbers will climb … and climb consistently.

The year is coming to a close, but this is not the time to take your foot off the accelerator or your eye off the road. Stay laser-focused on your goals. You have a little more than a month to lay the foundation for what could be the biggest and best year of your career. Be part of the year that I expect to be our ‘coming out’ year. It will be the year that we accelerate the positive trend in growth, the year that we set the stage for Liberty National’s return to greatness, so that once again Liberty becomes a shining jewel in the Torchmark crown. Don’t get left behind. Be instrumental in Liberty’s resurgence and take your team and your Agency to the top of the mountain. The view will be spectacular!
