Body Image**The way you see and feel about your body.
How you feel about your body can affect your self-esteem
Body changes are normal.
Media tends to portray females as thin and males as muscular.

Your Appropriate Weight
**Weight that is best for your body.
Usually given as a range. Example: 5’5” female is between 117
and 155 pounds.
Height is not the only factor that affects how much a person should weigh.
What are three other factors that need to be considered when determining someone’s appropriate weight?
Gender, age, body build or frame, growth pattern
Body Mass Index
**Measurement that allows you to assess your body size, taking your height and weight into account.
Not 100% accurate, but it gives you an idea.

Weight Problems
*Overweight: weighing more than what is appropriate for your gender, height, age, body frame and growth pattern
Underweight: weighing less than what is appropriate for your gender, height, age, body frame and growth pattern.
Overweight Teens
Generally there is a higher trend of overweight children in recent decades.
What are two lifestyle factors that can lead to this problem?
Extra pounds put added stress on the heart and lungs
Increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer & stroke
Underweight Teens
Lack body fat, which insulates the body and provides energy.

Beyond the Energy Equation
Pay attention to the source of the calories you eat.
