“Ralston proves himself, beyond any other photographer of his time, to be the direct spiritual descendent of Winslow Homer in his loving and solemn response to the Maine coast and to the people who live
in harmony alongside its austere beauty.”

I’m attaching the photos for my Guide ad on page 6. I would like to keep all the copy the same except change WWW.LANDINGART.COM <http://WWW.LANDINGART.COM> to www.LandingArt.com <http://www.LandingArt.com> . Please increase the font size to compensate for the lower case letters and move it under the line (NEXT TO THE FARN-SWORTH ART MUSEUM). Would you change the color of www.LandingArt.com <http://www.Landin-gArt.com> to black.
I would like the photos placed with 1. & 2. next to one another with 1/4” space between and 3. below with 1/4” between vertically. Photo credits as fol-lows:

Please justify the credits with the L&R edges of the photos with a thin black line around the photos. (As in the 2011 ad) You might need to re arrange the vertical spacing between the copy and photos to bal-ance better. I’ll look forward to your proof.

The Gallery at Frenchman’s Bay has moved to a “port in the storm.” Now in historic Somesville, the oldest settlement on Mount Desert Island, the Gallery has a new home in the old bookstore location still commonly known as Port In The Storm. A perfect place to display some of Maine’s finest examples of art and custom-designed furniture from craftsmen all over New England, the Gallery at Frenchman’s Bay has become one of the most respected galleries on the Maine coast by collectors of fine art and furniture alike. Open seven days a week from April to December and by appointment from January to March.

Winslow Homer“Winslow Homer lived in extraordinary times and enjoyed remarkable experiences. Born in 1836 in Boston and dying in 1910 at Prouts Neck, Maine, Homer was of an age to converse with men who fired on British regulars as well as with those who commuted to Wall Street. Homer, from a family of businessmen, internalized the complexities and ambivalences of his age. As the popular image of the artist coalesced around bohemian stereotypes in the latter half of the nineteenth century, Homer in-stead cultivated a Janus-faced public persona, styling himself by turns as a captain of industry and the “hermit of Prouts Neck” after his family purchased land in that sum-mer colony in 1883. Well-traveled, well-read and well-dressed, Homer enjoyed the comforts made available by industrial capitalism yet simultaneously eschewed the trappings of bourgeois life in search of authentic experience in a world increasingly un-tethered from the ties of traditional social economy.”
– Excerpt from Winslow Homer and the Poetics of Place by Thomas Andrew Denenberg, Director of the Shelburne Museum
In 2006, the Portland Museum of Art purchased Winslow Homer’s studio at Prouts Neck, located 12 miles from the Museum. The restored studio will open to the public on September 25, 2012. To commemorate the opening of the newly restored Winslow Homer Studio, the Museum will showcase the exhibition “Weatherbeaten: Winslow Homer and Maine.” Comprised of major oils and watercolors painted during Homer’s tenure in the Studio, the exhibition will introduce new perspectives on Homer’s life and work. Many of these works have not been on exhibition in Maine for more than a gen-eration and, due to their extraordinary rarity and importance in the history of American art, will not be seen together again for decades to come.
For ticketing information for exhibition “Weatherbeaten: Winslow Homer and Maine” and the Winslow Homer Studio, visit portlandmuseum.org.

MG+sG andcafe des artistesIn Woody Allen’s delightful “Midnight in Paris,” Gertrude Stein’s salon served as a center and meeting place for the emerging and established artists who together changed the face of art and literature. Until recently, the vibrant and varied art world in Maine has lacked a similar hub. We established Café des Artistes in 2005 as a means of promoting and creating excitement for Maine art events as they were happening, and also to help foster an esprit de corps for Maine artists and art lovers.Café des Artistes began as a blog on our website to publicize the many openings and shows hosted by MG + SG galleries, studios, and museums. It soon became a five-minute weekly radio show on WeRU, and later on WMPG. Café then developed into an email newsletter for those in the art business and enthusiasts of Maine art across the country.Today, Café des Artistes enjoys a unique partnership with the Bangor Daily News. each Friday, all summer and fall, Café des Artistes is featured on the cover of the BDN “Maine Living” Section. There you will find timely information on art openings and shows throughout the state, often with color reproductions from the artists. The Bangor Daily News also now hosts our Café des Artistes blog, which provides comprehensive listings at cafedesartistes.bangordailynews.com. The online Café blog and the printed Café in the BDN together reach thousands of readers in Maine and beyond. By subscribing to the Café des Artistes email newsletter at our website mainegalleryguide.com, you can ensure that you will never miss a Maine art event of interest. Our website hosts all of the art in this book, the MG+SG Calendar, and much more.It is our pleasure to welcome you to this 2012 tour of Maine art. Our warm thanks go to clients old and new, loyal readers, and all friends of Maine art.Cheers + happy touring!

The highlight of the 2011 season at York’s George Marshall Store Gallery was “From the Garden to the Kitchen”. The exhibition was a collaborative project with Stonewall Kitchen, the nationally recognized purveyor of specialty foods which was celebrating its 20th anniversary. Founders Jonathan King and Jim Stott, pictured top left with Mary Harding, gallery curator, and Jacquelyn Nooney, landscape designer, were delightful hosts at the reception and provided a picture-perfect spread of hors d-oeuvres and refreshments.
The Gallery has chosen the theme of “The Working Waterfront” for the 2012 season in recognition of the restored wharf and docks behind the gallery. The Museums of Old York which owns the property, received funding from the state’s Working Waterfront Access Pilot Program to save the historic wharf on the York River and provide critical waterfront access to southern Maine lobstermen.

At press time, Greenhut Galleries was in the middle of their "6th Biennial Invitational Portland Show," held over an additional month due to popular demand. The broad theme of “Portland” gave each artist the opportunity to interpret the city as they see it and know it. With 54 artists participating in 2012, a range of realism to abstraction and the use of various media made this exhibit colorful and diverse. By showing and representing artists from Maine, Greenhut continues to provide the highest quality art from our local community of living, working artists. The photo above was taken at an opening at the gallery last May.

Archipelago Fine Arts Gallery in Rockland always has a full show schedule. Here Vinalhaven/San Francisco artist Josie Iselin poses with gallery manager Lisa Mossel Vietze at last year’s popular “Rock, Paper, Scanner” show. This summer look for “Henry Isaacs: Lessons from an Island” through June 22, and “David Sears: from Matinicus Edges” opening June 29 through August 24.

CMCA, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport, is celebrating its 60th Anniversary with a busy schedule that includes the 60th Anniversary Honors Exhibition, a talk by noted art critic Jerry Saltz, the 2012 Biennial Exhibition, and the 35th Annual Benefit Art Auction & Dinner, Sunday evening, July 29, at Point Lookout in Northport, its most important fundraising event of the year.
Last year was the 30th anniversary for Caldbeck Gallery in Rockland. Artist wife and husband team Cynthia Hyde and James Kinnealey have built their contemporary art business into a gallery with an atmosphere of respect for its artists and their work, and for those who come to see it and make it part of their lives.

Hi Suzanne,
I’ve attached the images to be used for my ad. They should replace all the ones on last year’s ad, and I’ve used last year’s to approximate the dimensions you’ll need for the top banner and the bottom photo, too. I’d like to simply reverse the order of the small images from last year’s. So, they should go like so:
Banner Top Image
#3
#4
#1 #2 #5
Bottom Image
Other than my gallery name changing to “Galerie Dufour”, all other text can remain the same. Of course, it will need to be shifted to accommodate the new placement of the images…
Finally, I’ve also added a new image to be used for the Galerie Dufour space on the BelfastARTS group ad. It is titled “photo for group ad”
If you need anything else, just let me know.
Best to you and Anthony,
CharlieGalerie Dufour207 – 338 – 6448

Just next door to the D’Alessio Gallery, Argosy Gallery II joins in on the Bar Harbor “Fashion Night Out” fun with a tango workshop. Argosy Gallery will host a Milestone Exhibition in honor of Tom Nicholas, N.A. with an opening reception at the Bar Harbor Inn, Aug 25, 6-9 pm.
D’Alessio Gallery in Bar Harbor is always a fun place to visit, especially on “Fashion Night Out.” Great treats, art and a fun crowd are in store in a show featuring Russel D’Alessio’s latest paintings, the jewelry of Suzanne Anderson’s Yikes! Studio and the work of Maine weaver Lucy Tracy. The public is invited to the 2012 “Fashion Night Out”, Thursday, Sep 6, 5 -10 pm.

The Deer Isle Artists Association Gallery hosts numerous art exhibits from late spring right up to Christmas. During the summer the exhibts change every two weeks with opening receptions every other Friday evening. This summer the DIAA celebrates its 40th summer of bringing art to the Deer Isle peninsula with a special exhibit planned for mid summer. The gallery continues in to the fall with exhibits of longer duration, culminating with a small works exhibit just in time for the holidays.
To celebrate their 30th year, Turtle Gallery on Deer Isle is mounting a schedule of five summer shows with the theme “Continuing Connections” to honor the works of older established artists who have been with the gallery since the start, as well as work by some younger emerging artists. Here, gallery owner Elena Kubler poses with artist Mary Barnes at the final show of 2011.

Kendrick Charles and his horse-drawn sleigh were out all night picking up and dropping off Artwalkers at Kingfield’s First Friday Artwalk in February. Among the tour stops were the Stadler Gallery of Contemporary Art, the Schoolhouse Gallery, and the Reinholt Gallery, showing the work of 27 Maine artists and craftsmen at the Western Maine Artist Collective. The Stanley Museum had a special exhibit of local paintings by Dorothy Stanley Emmons as well as some jazz-era photographs of the artist to complement the live jazz music perfor-mance. The Kingfield area is an emerging art destination with the natural beauty and charm of a mountain village complete with fine art galleries, shops and summer Artwalks.
