Well, right now, this certainly describes how I’m feeling! I’m FIRED Up about the beginning of school, FIRED UP that my term as MSNA President has begun, and FIRED Up about the positive energy that I’m feeling from those of you who are involved in making plans for the 2015 MSNA Annual Conference “Quality Meals: A Recipe for Quality Minds.” I can’t say thank you enough to you all for affording me such a great opportunity as this one! I can’t say thank you enough to you all for affording me such a great opportunity as this one! Although the journey seems a bit tedious at times, it has been well worth it.

Getting to travel to Utah and participating in ANC was monumental! SNA’s reorganization plans were rolled out and voted on. The Leaders feel that this change will benefit both the organization and its members as a way to provide more member opportunities within SNA and alleviate some time and energy from officer positions. This change may make the positions more desirable to future candidates. Professional Standards and Continuing Education were also examined. Our Souls were also filled with encouraging and inspirational messages delivered by Sports Anchor Howie Long, authors Laura Schroff and Les Brown. If possible for you to do

By now, for most of you, things should be starting to settle down a bit in your Districts. Grain Waivers, CEP application, FFVP set up, and PLE are hopefully are things of the past. Now you can move on to doing what we do on a daily basis – feeding the children.

MSNA and SNA ScholarshipsThinking of taking a college or university course to further your education? Perhaps you are interested in another training opportunity that would increase your job skills. Consider applying for a MSNA Scholarship. Eight MSNA members received scholarships at the 2014 MSNA Annual Conference. If you are a current MSNA member and have been a MSNA member for two years, you are eligible. The Scholarship and Awards Committee has been raising funds for this year’s scholarships. For requirements and forms, check out the MSNA website at www.schoolnutrition-ms.org and click on scholarships. Complete scholarship application forms are due October 1, 2015, to Pam Kirby, Rankin County Schools. Have questions; contact either Pam Kirby at 601-825-2257 or Doris Schneider at 601-924-9901. Anyone can donate to the Scholarship fund. If you want to make a donation contact either Pam Kirby or Doris Schneider.

SNA also has scholarships. Links to information about applying for these scholarships can also be found on the MSNA website.

2015 SNA Annual National Conference in Salt Lake CityMississippi SNA members enjoyed beautiful weather in Salt Lake City as they attended the events at the SNA Annual Conference. Sunday morning, MSNA members were well represented at the Awards Ceremony. As one of her last duties as MSNA President, Lela Bynum accepted the Thelma Flanagan Gold Achievement Award from Julia Bauscher, SNA President. The Thelma Flanagan Gold Achievement Award honors state presidents reaching the outcomes of 2014-15 Priority Issues.

MSNA members took advantage of the many educational and general sessions, the exhibits, and just networking with each other and members from other states. They gathered for the state picture on page 11. Mark your calendar for the 2016 SNA Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas on July 10-13, 2016.

Well all, it’s the start of a new school year. I hope everyone has had time to recharge their batteries and is ready to get started. We have lots of new and exciting things to look forward to this year. We will get to enjoy some new products along with a year waiver in the whole grain products we are serving. SUDIA has breakfast challenges going on. We have a

new micro threshold of $3000 or less for purchasing that does not require two quotes. We have lots of new professional standards and train hours to track. Plus we have new Child Nutrition Directors

to welcome into MSNA (so get busy with their recruitment). The Production Manuals have been changed a little. Mississippi Recipes for Success is getting a revamp for the changes in purchasing and whole grain waivers.

All in all it looks like we will be busy with all of this plus our usual daily operations. November will bring us the MSNA Annual Conference in Jackson. Everyone always looks forward to our conference so please plan now to attend. We will be working hard to make this Conference as exciting and educational as in years past (please keep us in your prayers).

I hope you all have a wonderful school start up, so WELCOME BACK!!!

Danny Dillistone, MSNA President Elect

As we embark on a new school year and the many challenges that lie ahead, we also gear up for the office of MSNA Vice President. We know that this phase of leadership is a learning process by which I will shadow and learn from the President and President-Elect. Kudos to Lela as she inspired each member to Get in the Game and Be a Part of the MSNA Team, and to Louise for her hard work as she assumes the office of President and prepares for the annual conference. The conference theme: Quality Meals: A Recipe for Quality Minds is appropriately fitting because it highlights our main objective for serving

the children of the state of Mississippi each day.

As Louise leads us into this year, I know that the gears of Danny’s mind are continuously turning as he prepares to wow us into an adventure for 2016-2017. He strives for an adventure; therefore, I can only imagine what he has planned.

There is much to learn from the Past Presidents, President, officers and members of MSNA as well as other school nutrition professionals that specialize in child nutrition. Together, we can enhance our ideas and goals to continue moving MSNA to the next horizon.

Again, thanks for the vote of confidence that you have placed in me to lead one of the greatest organizations in Mississippi during the 2017-2018 school year. I look forward to working with each of you.

2015 MSNA NuTRITION EDuCATION SEMINARThe 2015 Nutrition Education Seminar returned to Hattiesburg at the Lake Terrace Conference Center on April 15, 2015. The beautiful April day and Lake Terrace’s spring setting could not have been better. Lela Bynum, MSNA President, welcomed all to “Nutrition for the Team.” She introduced Nancy Rice, State Director from Georgia and Former SNA President. Nancy fed us food for thought with her presentation of “Your Attitude Determines Your Attitude.” After a short break, Sue Ellen Codding, MSNA Treasurer, discussed the changes and requirements for the MSNA and SNA Manager of the Year. Chuck Ainsworth encouraged members to nominate deserving members as SNA School Lunchroom Heroes. Star Managers from across the state participated in a showcase of their best practices on promoting school meals, developing new recipes, and breakfast participation. Featured this year were: Deedra Anthony, Grenada Middle School, Grenada School District; Patrick Butler, Redwood Elementary, Vicksburg-Warren School District; and Alisa Willis and Alberta Harris, N.R. Burger Middle School, Hattiesburg Public School District. Since this is a part of the program every year, start thinking about being a participant next year!

All the participants enjoyed a great buffet luncheon served by the Lake Terrace Catering Staff. After satisfying their nutritional needs, participants returned to hear David Leathers, our favorite chef from Tupelo. David has spoken at other MSNA conferences. The topic was “Eating Real, from the Farm to the School” and as usual he amazed and challenged us with his carving and presentation skills.

The afternoon concluded with an update from our state office by April Catchings, Office of Child Nutrition, MDE. Participants were exposed to many new ideas and had great networking opportunities during break and lunch. After some great door prizes were given away, the participants journeyed safely home! Thanks to Kaye Mayatt and her staff and committee for planning a great Nutrition Education Seminar.

SCHOOL DISTRICT (OR STATE AGENCY)OWNED MEMBERSHIP (SDM) OPTION

SNA and MSNA offer a valuable membership option called School District (or State Agency) Owned Membership (SDM) as an alternative to standard individual memberships. A SDM is a membership that is owned by a school district in the name of an individual and is transferable to another employee if the original assignee leaves or retires. The goal of SDM is to make it easier for your school district to pay for and centrally manage memberships while also allowing employees to enjoy the many benefits of SNA and MSNA membership. Benefits of SDM include: • Ability to transfer memberships. • Ability to align all of your memberships to expire the same month. • Ability to receive a group invoice for your memberships. • Ability for a designated main contact to log into his/her online SNA account and view entire SDM roster • Free Memberships for New SDMs: SNA is currently offering an incentive for new employee or manager members. For every 5 new employee

members, you receive 1 new free employee membership. And for every 5 new managers, you receive 1 new free manager membership! For more information about SDM or to get started, please visit: www.schoolnutrition.org/sdm or contact SNA at [email protected].

JPS MARY HILL NAMED SILVER PLATE WINNER!

JPS Food Services chief Mary Hill is no stranger to the national spotlight. Her passion and dedication to providing healthy, affordable school meals to students in Jackson Public Schools has led to her most recent honor–a Silver Plate Award from the International Food Manufacturer's Association.

In a profile on Hill, FoodService Director Magazine, credited her selection to five accomplishments of her administration. Under her leadership, Hill has improved the design of kitchens in new buildings with conveniences like walk-in coolers and combi ovens that help produce healthier versions of favorite menu items. She has promoted healthier eating by providing more of the nutritious choices students demand most based on point-of-sale data. Her innovations include programs for food service employees and extend throughout the District and beyond. Every year, Hill's team sponsors a wellness walk open to the public and a District-wide weight loss incentive program.

IFMA recognizes food service professionals in seven categories with its Silver Plate award. Hill was recommended in the Elementary and Middle Schools category by Schwan's® Food Company for her initiatives impacting elementary and secondary schools in Jackson. At the annual celebration, one Silver Plate winner was honored with the Gold Plate Award. The event has been called "The Academy of Awards of Foodservice" according to the event website. The IFMA's Gold Plate Award Celebration took place May 18, 2015, at Union Station in Chicago.

MSNA LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE CHALLENGES LEADERS

On a bright sunshiny day in June, the 2015 MSNA Leadership Conference was held at Lake Tiak-O’Khata. Participants enjoyed being away from the busy days of school life and the opportunity to prepare for the 2015-16 MSNA year. Participants relaxed the evening before when Marketing Agents South hosted a barbecue at a lakeside cabin. Our thanks to Alston Sory, Curtis Shelton, and Mike Williamson for sponsoring a wonderful event.

President Lela Bynum welcomed us at the beginning of the session. Gail Kavanaugh followed with highlights of the 2015 Mississippi legislative session as well as some comments about federal legislation. Stephanie Robinson, Office of Child Nutrition, MDE, updated attendees on program changes. Next President Elect Louise McPhee presented the MSNA Initiatives for her year as MSNA President. These were developed when Louise and other MSNA members attended the National Leadership Conference. The MSNA Executive Board, MSNA Chapters, and MSNA members all will play a part in helping Louise implement those initiatives.

President Elect Louise introduced Reginald (Reggie) Ross with the North Carolina Department of Instruction. Reggie was installed as the SNA Southeast Regional Director at ANC. Reggie challenged all present as he told the story of his leadership journey and how he began as a member and now is a board member at the national level.

As usual the kitchen staff at Lake Tiak-O’Khata prepared a great buffet lunch. Our thanks to all these industry members who sponsored networking tables: The Wallin Group, SFSPac, Marketing Agents South, PRM, Pro-Quip, Super Bakery, Interior Elements, Advance Pierre, HumiTec, Track Point Systems, and SUDIA. Industry members shared information about their products and services. Participants at all the tables enjoyed the food, fellowship, and networking with each other and our industry partners.

After lunch informational sessions were held for MSNA Committees, MSNA Executive Board, and MSNA Chapter Officers and Members. MSNA thanks Gail Kavanaugh, Julie Hamilton, Sandy Hearn, Sue Ellen Codding, and Doris Schneider for providing these sessions. MSNA members should be well on the way to helping Louise meet the initiatives for 2015-16. To end a great conference, Past President Rena’ Pritchard installed the MSNA Executive Board for 2015-16 and introduced them to the attendees. Message from Past President, Lela Bynum

My year of serving as president of the Mississippi School Nutrition Association has come to an end. I wish to thank each of you for allowing me to serve in this capacity. I treasure each of the memories I have made during this year of service. To the members of the 45th Mississippi School Nutrition Association Executive Board, Steering Committee Chairs and Members, and Industry Advisory Board I wish to say a special word of appreciation. Your dedication and service to the association cannot be measured. Each of you gives of yourself without hesitation, and we are all recipients of your commitment to making our organization successful. I have been inspired by many of you, and I have found numerous mentors, friends, and leaders within our association that I can call upon for help. I know that each of you have also given assistance to countless others who were in need.

It is now time for each of us to lend our assistance to our new president, Louise McPhee. I know for a fact that she is spending many hours preparing for the Mississippi School Nutrition Association Conference in November. Each person who serves (or has served) as president will tell you, this is not a task that can be accomplished alone. It takes all of us coming together to make the conference a success, and I encourage each of you to step up and volunteer to serve in our Mississippi School Nutrition Association.

Volunteering has allowed me exposure to SNA national and state conferences which provided me access to information that is vital to my district and staff. Volunteering helped me to gain confidence, professionalism, and more pride in my job. It is my sincere wish that each of you will begin to volunteer in your local chapters and state association so that you may find this same inspiration. This is your association, and it is up to you to help make it the association you want it to be.

Again, please allow me to express my appreciation to each of you for gifting me with the opportunity to grow personally and professionally as the former president of Mississippi School Nutrition Association. You are truly the best!

Lela Bynum, Past PresidentMississippi School Nutrition Association

A CALL TO ACTION FOR MSNA

Please take time to visit with candidates for the Mississippi Legislature and our statewide candidates for office. Attend rallies, candidate forums, debates, and

other events where they might be speaking. This is our time to ask them to support the MSNA. There is a lot of talk this summer about public education. We all know that one of the best ways to a bright, sharp mind is for us to make sure our kids have a healthy school meal. Take time to learn more about Initiative 42 and Initiative 42A that deal with fully funding public education. The more money our school districts have might ease some of the burdens we have in the kitchen and the cafeteria. I know you're all busy getting back to school, and with that said, take time after work and on the weekends to talk to those folks running for office. It's important for all candidates to learn about MSNA and what we do - you can help do that. And don't forget to vote for the candidates who say they want to support and help MSNA in the general election on November 3rd!
