In Milan, in 1905 Cesare Bonetti opened a small shopand manufactured to order any cocks for the local

    requirement.

In the early twenties this small firm took on a newindustrial look and moved towards production and

    trade of industrial valves only.

Bonetti is, by this time, becoming a well-known com-pany for production of piston valves, sleeve-packed

cocks and glass level gauges.Later the production range, bearing the BONT registe-

red trade-mark includes the new valves for high pres-

sure and temperature meeting the strictest requi-rements of the most advanced technology, besides

double-sealing valves, bellows valves, diaphragm val-ves, magnetic level gauges.

After two enlargements the company in 1969 moves to

the new Garbagnate Milanese Works where Bonetti's

typical trend for research, development and designaccuracy has more opportunity to expand.

Certification according to ISO 9001 / UNI EN 29001.

    Magnetic Level GaugesBONT

The operation of theBONT magnetic level

gauge is based on some elementary physical principles:The principle whereby the liquid in communicating vessels isalways at the same level,

Archimedes' principle according to which a body immersed in

a liquid receives a buoyancy equal to the weight of displacedliquid,The principle of attraction between North and South poles oftwo permanent magnets and that of repulsion between likepoles. This principle has two applications in the BONT magnetic

level gauge:first between the magnet in the chamber float and everysingle magnet of the indicating scale, second between the magnets of the indicating scale.

    The BONT Magne-tic Level Gauges

are manufactured in different Types and Classes, for variousoperating conditions, listed below in Fig. 3342.Plant operating and design conditions must be clearly indicatedfor choice of suitable level gauge.Choice of level gauge depends also on specific gravity of vesselmedium. If you want to use a level gauge for conditions different (lesssever too) from those to which it was originally supplied, pleasecontact our Engineering Department.

    The most utilized materials are:

    TP 316 - TP 316L - TP321PVC - PP - PVDF - PTFETP 316 - Titanium - PVC - PP - PVDF - PTFE

Aluminium with glass protection. When aluminium is not allowed, indicatingscale is protected by a seal tight stainlesssteel housing.

Accord ing to the operat ing condit ions, we supply the levelgauge in the most suitable material combination.Generally iron, copper and silver alloys are excluded.

The BONT magnetic level gauge consists of:

two horizontal stub pipes for connection to the vessel con-

taining the liquid of which we wish to know the level;two stop valves (one on each stub pipe) to isolate the levelgauge;a vertical chamber consisting of a tube of suitable diameterand thickness containing a float wherein a permanent magnetis placed exactly on the liquid level line;an indicating scale, outside the vertical chamber, consisting ofa case of non-magnetic material with transparent front facecontaining a set of small permanent magnets enclosed insmall cylinders which can rotate on their horizontal axis. These cylinders show an external surface having two differentcolours.

According to the orientation of each magnet (due to the actionof the magnet in the float) each cylinder will show externally halfof its surface of one colour or the other.

The indicating scale will be of one colour (e.g. white) over thechamber area taken up by gas, vapour or steam phase con-trasting with the other colour (e.g. red) over the chamber areataken up by liquid phase.

Alarm system for damaged float. The three bottom cylinders ofthe indicating scale are placed lower than the bottom connec-tion of the magnetic level gauge. They are used for control offloat efficiency. With float damaged and its consequent sinkingin the liquid, these three cylinders show the yellow surfaces.

These level gauges are very suitable for interface reading: thelevel gauge float has only to sink in the liquid having lowerspecific gravity and to float on the liquid having higher specificgravity. In spite of its simple operating principle, the BONT magneticlevel gauge represents the result of long research and expe-

rience in design, sizing, choice of materials and manufacturingtechnology.

The application range is very wideand includes all the situations whe-

re the fluids are:at high pressure, at low or high temperature,at low pressure, at low or high temperature, chemically aggressive, pollutant to environment, noxious or poisonous to man, inflammable or explosive, with identical optical characteristics of the superimposedphases (interface)

    Each instrument is equip-

    ped with an indicatingscale, fixed to the gauge chamber by means of brackets withspring or hose clamps.The scale is made of rotating cylinders housed in a one piececase of austenitic stainless steel with glass in the front to allowthe reading.The scale allows continuous reading. The length of the scale issuitably sized for the gauge;

Axis to axis distance between cylinders is 10 mm.At the bottom of the scale five cylinders white/yel low, placedlower than the bottom connection to the gauge to the drum, areused for evidencing alarm situations due to float sinking. There are different scales:- Standard Scale

The standard scale is water proof. The sealing is obtained

using silicone gaskets. The cylinders are of plastic material of white/red colour, suitable for fluid operating temperature up to 300 C.

    - High Temperature ScaleIn this scale the cylinders are of special plastic material ofwhite/black colour, suitable for fluid operating temperature upto 400 C. These white/black cylinders may be used also instandard scales for better reading in case of black/whitetelevision remote transmission. For eventual higher temperature special scales are available.

    - Scale with Non-frosting ExtensionPerspex non-frosting extension of hight suitable to theoperating temperature can be fixed and sealed on the scale. This solution allows the reading of the level also in case offrost on the gauge chamber and scale.

The most usedMaterial Schedules are listed below.

    MATERIAL SCHEDULES

Our magnetic level gauges aremanufactured with the C to C

and Visible Length requested by customers, up to approx 6,500mm for level gauges having a stainless steel vertical chamberand up to approx 3,500 mm for level gauges having a verticalchamber in synthetic polymers.

An intermediate flanged connection is made for longer C to Cdistances.

With the exception of PTFE level gauges, the visible length cancorrespond with the C to C distance.

    CENTRE TO CENTRE DISTANCE

    VISIBLE LENGTH

We always recommend the fittingof shutoff cocks/valves between le-

    vel gauge and vessel.

    CONNECTIONS

    INDICATING SCALE

Connections arrangement. The standard and mostrequested arrangement(see Arrang. 1) consistsof 2 horizontal vesselconnecting stub endsfitted on same vertical.Different arrangements(see 2, 3, etc.) can be

    made for special requi-rements.

    Fig. 3303

Connections are as follows:welded flanges: Standard, PN, DN and facing to be indicated,slip-on flanges: Standard, PN, DN and facing to be indicated, male threaded: Standard and DN to be indicated, female threaded: Standard and DN to be indicated, threaded union nut for 3-piece connection ( to be indicated),S.W., Standard and DN to be indicated,B.W., Standard and DN to be indicated.

Connections types.Listed below are types of gauge connections:Vertical chamber connections, if this is furnished WITHOUTcocks/valves,cocks/valves connections, if cocks/valves are INCLUDED inthe supply. In this case the chamber/valve connections is atechnical detail which usually does not concern the end user.

Calibrated Scale. At th e side of th eindicating scale a stainlesssteel calibrated scale canbe assembled Fig. 3304.The standard calibration isin cm.On request any differentcalibration or material canbe supplied.

Magnetic Switches. It is advisable, but not indispensable, that the fixing of themagnetic switches to the level gauge is made by the gaugemanufacturer. Please state in your order if there are specificreading ranges within which the switch setting has to be made,or if the setting is to be considered continuous on all the lengthof the indicating scale. In both cases the location of theswitches can be adjusted with millimetric precision without anyspecial tool. The switches can be added also subsequently to delivery of thegauge.

Any switch can be located:- with respect to the hight of the gauge scale:

    - adjustable with continuity at the required level on the wholelength of the indicating scale

    - adjustable within specific range to be stated in the order- with respect to the orizontal plane (Fig. 3305):

    - located at 180 in respect to the indicating scale, with an

allowance range particularly wide, that is of 55- at the side of the indicating scale, indifferently on the left orright side, and on both sides.

Therefore there is the possibility of having more than onemagnetic switch at the same level (Fig. 3305).Please state in your order whether there are specific needs inthe location of switches.

Some level gauge types aswell as special operating

conditions need, during startup and stop operations, a strictcompliance with the instructions enclosed with each instrument.

Each magnetic switch contains one or more electric contacts foropening/closing the control circuits for: TOP alarm, BOTTOMalarm, pump starting, pump stopping, warning, etc. The mostused switches are suitable for 0.28 A at 230 V, 60 VA; maxcurrent of contact: 1 A at 60 V. A suitable relay should be fittedfor higher power supplies.

We supply different types of magnetic switches:- monostable, bistable- explosionproof, etc.

Choice of magnetic switches should be made according to plan-ned wiring diagram and safety standards of plant.

Remote Reading. The BONT Remote Reading System type MST (Multi SwitchTransmitter) is supplied for remote reading from a magneticlevel gauge.See page 14 and following.

Heating / Cooling.Level gauge, depending on contained fluids, can be heated/-cooled.Level gauge for these applications is equipped with heating

equipment which can consist of:one externally fitted pipe contacting vertical chamber and tra-ced by steam, heat transfer fluid, etc. (Fig. 3306);a suitable quantity of armoured resistors, externally contactingthe vertical chamber (Fig. 3307);one stainless steel jacket welded externally on vertical cham-ber; space between jacket and vertical chamber is traced byheating fluid (Fig. 3308). Section of space is very wide withrespect to section of vertical chamber, therefore heatingaction is very effective.

Heating of shutoff valves could be considered.Insulating of the whole instrument can be performed on site, after installation, if necessary.

    Remote Reading System type MSTBONT

    BONT

GENERAL INFORMATIONThe BONT Remote Level Reading System type MST (MultiSwitch Transmitter) is an additional and subsidiary method forany BONT Magnetic Level Gauge, already described in thepreceding pages. This system is applicable to BONETTI

magnetic level gauges, only. The MST reading system is compatible with any accessorypresent on level gauge, already described on page 4 and -firstly - with indicating scale. In this way we have a level gauge showing the direct reading onsame instrument and simultaneously the remote onetransmitted by a three-conductor screened cable. We would emphasize that the MST System can be fitted on anyBONT magnetic level gauge, under any pressure and with anyMaterial Schedule (Stainless Steel, Synthetic Polymers, PTFELinings, Titanium), even already installed. The MST System can be also fitted with a plotter recording levelvariations depending on time. The operating range of this System is consequently wideincluding chemical and petrochemical industries as well aspower plants. To this purpose we draw your attention to the fact

    that the BONT

Series MAG 210 Level Gauge with MSTRemote Reading System has been approved by ISPESL(Istituto Superiore per la Prevenzione e la Sicurezza del Lavoro- Accident Prevention and Safety Board) with Authorization No.1441 dated 09.02.1990 for installation on drums of steamgenerators, without pressure limits.

The MST System can be installedin any weather condition, since not affected by heat, cold, freezing, windin explosionproof areas, since the intrinsic safety is obtainedby Zener barriers. Upon request we supply devices wherenone of the values 1.2 V, 0.1 A, 20 J or 25 mW is excee-ded. Therefore neither certificates nor marks are neededaccording to European Standards Cenelec EN 50.014.

Up to now we have considered the BONT Remote Reading

System type MST by means of a reading sensing element (Fig.3334) to fit on a Magnetic Level Gauge outside the vessel. TheMST System includes also a reading sensing element (Fig.3344) to be installed inside the vessel. The sensing elementtransmits the signal to an Indicator/Transmitter by a screenedcable.

These switches consist of:a vertical chamber consisting of a tube of suitable diameter

and thickness containing a float wherein a permanentmagnet is fixed by means of a special patented device; The chamber is generally fixed on the vessel by only oneflange sized DN 32 of 40 or 50 having a PN suitable to theapplication;a magnetic switch, fitted on the vertical chamber at thedesired height. This magnetic switch contains one or more electric con-tacts for opening/closing the control circuits for: TOPalarm, BOTTOM alarm, pump starting, pump stopping, warning etc.The most used switches are suitable for 0.28 A at 220 V,60 VA; max current of contact: 1 A at 60 V. A suitable relayshould be fitted for higher power supplies. We supply different types of magnetic switches:

monostable, bistable explosionproof, etc.Choice of the suitable magnetic switch should be made ac-cording to the planned wiring diagram and safety stan-dards of plant.

When the float is moved upwards in the gauge by the liquidflowing through the connection flange, the magnet containedin the float operates the switch. With liquid level lowering in the vessel, the float moving down-wards effects the opposite operation.

Obviously the only one verifiable level height is that where thevessel flange is positioned.

When ordering or requesting price please state:type of fluid contained in the level gauge and its specific
