The Vows of Church Membership

I believe the basic beliefs of the Christian Faith which are summed up in The Apostles’

Creed, a statement which reads as follows:

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:

and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried;

he descended into hell,

The third day he rose again from the dead,

he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from whence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in

the Holy Ghost;

the holy Catholic Church;

the Communion of Saints;

the Forgiveness of sins;

the Resurrection of the body;

and the Life everlasting.

I assent, with God’s spiritual help, to live a life which befits such belief.

I assent to participate regularly in worship on Sundays with others who, like myself,

embrace the Christian Faith.

I assent to give a fitting proportion of my time, talents and money in support of the cause

and work for which the Church stands.

How are YOU measuring up?

For remember … God is watching you!

THE MINISTER WRITES ….

If you turn to the middle pages of this edition of ‘The Arrow’ you will see the latest set of statistics – to 31

st

December last year – anent the Presbytery of Dunfermline of which the Abbey Church is part. And there you will observe that, on several significant counts, the Abbey is way ahead of most of the others in terms, for instance, of numbers joining the Church, either by Profession of Faith (for the first time, that is) or by Certificate of Transference (from other churches).

Attendance-wise too, I am reliably informed that the Sunday congregations in the Abbey far exceed those of many another parish church both within Dunfermline Presbytery and other presbyteries throughout Scotland.

A perhaps long overdue word of congratulations and appreciation therefore is to be extended to all those of you who, by your practical support and service, continue to honour and fulfil the promises you made to Almighty God when you first joined the Church.

Sadly and unfortunately though, there are those on the Abbey Church Register of Members – as on other Church Rolls – who have failed, sometimes miserably, to uphold their vows of Church Membership as these are outlined on the front cover of this edition of the church magazine.

Perhaps it is time therefore for some of you to review and, pray God, renew your commitment to God and His Church and thereby avoid the ultimate condemnation - ‘I never knew you’ -

4

from off the lips of Christ. Read Matthew chapter 7, verses 21-23.

William Cowper, in his great hymn of personal faith and devotion, states the only true response:

Where is the blessedness I knew

When first I saw the Lord?

Where is the soul-refreshing view

Of Jesus and his word?

What peaceful hours I once enjoyed!

How sweet their memory still!

But they have left an aching void

The world can never fill.

The dearest idol I have known,

Whate’er that idol be,

Help me to tear it from thy throne,

And worship only thee.

MINISTER’S NOTES

Thursday 3 June: Visit to Dunfermline and the Abbey of the Dalai Lama – as publicised in the last edition of ‘The Arrow’.

Sunday 13 June: Holy Communion at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. No 9.30 a.m. Service. During the Morning Communion Service I will formally dedicate, to the Glory of God, all the items of church fabric anent the recent interior refurbishment of the

5

Abbey Church, much of which has been acquired as a result of several legacies which have benefited the Abbey in recent years.

Sunday 20 June: Sunday School and Bible Class Prizegiving during the Second Service. At 3 p.m. Mrs Margaret Dean, HM Lord Lieutenant of Fife, will present Boys’ Brigade (Mid Scotland Area) Queen’s Badge Certificates.

Sunday 4 July: Both Services to be conducted by The Very Reverend A R C McLellan DD, former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and currently HM Chief Inspector of Prisons (Scotland).

Sunday 11 July: Both Services to be conducted by Abbey Member The Reverend John C Chalmers BD of the Kirk’s Department of Ministry.

Sunday 22 August (Afternoon): Normandy Veterans’ Service.

Abbey Crystal Bowl Ladies Golf Trophy: Lady golfers within the congregation should be interested and gratified to know that a trophy has been generously gifted by Abbey Member Brian Butcher of the Dunfermline Trophy and Engraving Centre – to be competed for at Dunfermline Golf Club (Pitfirrane) during the afternoon of Tuesday 17

th August (see separate notice).

Abbey Shop Convenership: The Convenership of the Abbey Shop is a continuous, day-to-day office and appointment which Abbey Elder Mrs Moira Hamilton, like all of her predecessors in that capacity, has held with great acceptance and ability for some 10 years, which is a tremendous commitment given the unrelenting nature of the post. During Moira’s term of office the shop has, of course, altered considerably, not least in its refurbishment as part of the interior restoration of the Abbey Church. The shop staff and display arm have likewise been well maintained under Moira’s convenership and the Abbey Kirk

6

Session continue to be ever mindful of the shop’s considerable financial contribution to the church’s annual income. I am both relieved and gratified to learn that the recent ‘blip’ apropos additional helpers has virtually resolved itself through various appeals to help the Abbey in the task of maintaining the shop in the crucial role which it plays in the church’s ongoing life and witness. Meanwhile, we warmly and sincerely thank Moira for her substantial and commendable period at the helm of the shop whilst thanking too Mrs Jean Livermore for consenting to succeed Moira and expressing, in addition, the Kirk Session’s deep appreciation to the rota of helpers. (PS – Moira has declined any tangible personal recognition of her service preferring, instead, that an alternative arrangement be undertaken.)

BIBLE CORNER

READING: St. John, 1, 46.

THE ANSWER TO DOUBTS Having doubts about something seems to be a natural reaction for many people now-a-days....especially doubts about the claims of the Christian faith. Well, in this verse, St. John shows us the wise way in which to meet and test our doubts.

9

‘Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?’ sneered Nathanael in such a way that he appeared to have the opinion that any other answer would be ridiculous.

Curiously, Philip did not argue with him. All he said was 'Come and see!’ which of course is the only sensible reply for many people have the mistaken idea that faith is an odd peculiarity found only in Christianity.

However, these people are totally wrong for it should remembered that all progress everywhere is due to an adventurous mind that looks ahead and, thinking that it sees something new or worthwhile, goes on to put it to the test. This is true of all branches of knowledge and so it is in religion. Hence Philip did not try to reason with Nathanael. All he said was ‘Come and see!’

In other words test it.....

try it......

and experience its claims and its result before you make up your mind about its truth.

PRAYER. Lord God, the Source of all knowledge help us to be honest with ourselves and give us the courage to give real and practical consideration to the claims of our Christian faith.

Amen.

SESSION CLERK 1990 – 2003

It was kind of Mr. Jessamine to write such a glowing tribute to me in the March edition of The Arrow following my retiral as Session Clerk, and extremely generous of the Kirk Session to permit me to select a gift of my choice for presentation at the Communion Service on 14

th March. My choice was an oil

10

painting entitled ‘Reflections on a Barra Beach’ by Jean Feeney of Crieff.

On the evening of Thursday, 25th

March my wife and I were invited to attend a Social Evening in the Church Hall, and having no knowledge of what was to happen, we were delightfully surprised to find that the Members of the Kirk Session and their partners had gathered to further recognise my service as Session Clerk. A magnificent buffet supper had been arranged by Mrs. Rachel Hogg and Mrs. Eleanor Jessamine, and there were speeches and entertainment to while away the next two hours. It was a wonderful Kirk Soiree, and I am indebted to the organiser (the new Session Clerk), the speakers and the choir for an extremely entertaining evening.

I would also take this opportunity to congratulate Angus Hogg on his appointment as Session Clerk and wish him well in the years to come. As a point of interest he is only the eighth Session Clerk of Dunfermline Abbey to be appointed in the last 104 years!

In the last edition of ‘The Arrow’ I mentioned that flowers were delivered each Sunday to the homes of those who are ill, elderly or bereaved. This task is undertaken each week by Mrs. Kathleen Carruthers who wraps and labels the flowers and then finds willing elders and members of the congregation to deliver them. Many thanks are due to those who give their time to do this valuable and much appreciated service.

THE BOYS’ BRIGADE On Saturday the 24

th April, the Company had two

remarkable successes which members of the congregation who attended the Services on the 25

th will know about.

The Company Band won the Championship Class of the Scottish band Competition, at East Kilbride, making us now the best Trumpet/Bugle Band in Scotland for the Boys Brigade. This made up for the disappointment of last year when we thought we had done better than the fourth place awarded.

Four boys then travelled to Kilmarnock to take place in the final of the Masterteam National Quiz Competition for all B.B. Companies in Britain and were second. This is the first time we have reached the final and to get second place is an added great achievement.

The Company would also like to thank everyone who attended and supported the Fayre on Saturday 1st May when the sum of £810.00 was raised.

The Company will be participating in our Annual Charity Fundraiser on Sunday 23

rd May and this year we will be raising

funds for MacMillan nurses. Norrie Smith will be taking part and as usual he will be seeking sponsors from members of the congregation at the morning coffee breaks.

The Company's Annual Inspection and Display will be held on Friday 21

st May at Woodmill High School and it is hoped

many members of the congregation will attend and support us.

ABBEY QUAICH 2004

Another new name has been added to the list of winners of The Abbey Quaich after 14 hardy golfers survived very unpleasant, rainy conditions while playing in this year’s competition on Thursday, 15

th April 2004.

Abbey Elder Frank Conway was the winner for 2004 with a total of 38 Stableford points, one more than the runner up, Garson Gillies. Other prizewinners were Fergus Duncan, Scott Peacock, Brian Butcher, Graeme Findlay, Ian Dewar and Rev. Alistair Jessamine.

Grateful thanks are due to both George Smart who, prior to emigrating to Australia, presented this year’s replica quaich for the overall winner and to Brian Butcher who gave suitably engraved glasses for use as additional prizes.

My personal thanks to Rev. Alistair Jessamine for presenting the prizes, to those members who helped with scorecards etc. on the day, the catering staff at Dunfermline Golf Club who provided an excellent meal and to everyone who played in and contributed to the completion of another successful Abbey Quaich. Every best wish to the lady golfers of The Abbey Church when they play in their inaugural competition in August.

ABBEY MOTHER AND TODDLER GROUP

We are a relatively small group who meet in the Abbey Church Halls every Monday morning from 9.30 to 11.00 am. There are approximately 12 toddlers who regularly attend and are pre-nursery age (birth to three years) although all pre-schoolers are welcome.

It is a friendly group and everyone is encouraged to take part in its running, the children enjoy playing with the toys, puzzles and books in a relaxed atmosphere, allowing the mothers or carers to be free to chat and enjoy a coffee. The children love the space and freedom that the hall

offers and they enjoy playing with the great variety of toys such as – a slide, tricycles, cars and much more.

Throughout the year we arrange events for the children, a Halloween Party, a Christmas Party, an Easter Egg hunt and we finish the session with a Summer Outing to ‘Noah’s Ark’ in Perth.

The Autumn 2004 session starts on Monday 23rd

August and continues on Monday mornings until the 4

th October leaving a

short break until the Winter session starts on the 24th October.

We always warmly welcome any new babies and toddlers – just come along to our happy and friendly group.

BIBLE CLASS

Since the beginning of February, we have completed the final four lessons of Scripture Union Topic 2 on the theme ‘Being O.K. with God’. These were 'Living God's Way’, ‘More Than Words’, ‘No Fear’ and ‘0. K. with God’.

These lessons explored the challenge of thinking about -

Choosing to live God's way

Faith in action

Having no fear in a relationship with God

Their own relationship with God

A new CD/cassette recorder has been purchased along with a set of three CD's from ‘The 500 Series’ (50 songs the UK churches are singing). Included in these are familiar songs such as -

Great is Thy Faithfulness

How great Thou Art

Spirit of the Living God

Purify my Heart

along with many other perhaps less well known but beautiful songs of worship.

On the 7th March Lorna Edmond gave us a most informative talk on her involvement with ‘Christian Aid’, the fund raising work done in Dunfermline and the wider issues dealt with by the organisation. At this meeting we were joined by five members of the Sunday School who are due to join the Bible Class in September.

We were delighted to be allowed to observe Communion on Sunday, 14th March. It was a special day for the girls involved. They were totally amazed at the proceedings and were so glad to have been given this opportunity.

During the Palm Sunday Family Service Leanne MacDonald

and Gillian Ryan shared the reading of -

‘Who is this Jesus who comes into our lives?’

while Eilidh Tennent read the Palm Sunday prayer -

‘Do we yet understand?’

19

The weather was kind to us on Saturday, 24th April when we

took part in the annual Christian Aid Forth Bridge Walk. We gained sponsorship for £264.00,

Any young person in the congregation, between the ages of 11 and 16, who would like more information about the Bible Class, can contact me on the number below. Classes will finish in June and resume in September.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

We can hardly believe that we are beginning to prepare for our picnic and closing service. This has been a very busy session for us as we have taken the opportunity to look more closely at the Miracles of the Bible both in word and in song.

We started off the session with the Miracle of the Fishes. The children marvelled at how the fishermen had been out all night and caught nothing in their nets, and we talked of how they must have felt when their efforts were all in vain. We decided that they would feel very sad and frustrated.

Jesus then advised them to cast their nets again and although they did not believe that they would catch any fish the men wanted to obey Jesus, so did as he asked. Then the miracle happened and they were rewarded with nets so full of fish that the nets were in danger of ripping apart. This was a story we all enjoyed very much.

We then addressed the issues of homelessness and our offering that week went to the joint churches fund, who ensure that any money which is raised is ploughed back in to the local community it came from.

20

Our next miracle story was that of the crippled man who was healed. This showed us how those who have faith in Jesus are prepared to do what they can for their friends. Again we tried to imagine what the reaction would be if we were having visitors to our home and someone started pulling the roof down to let a sick

person be lowered down. The people in that room must have been very surprised. We then, over a two week period, explored one of the favourite miracles, that of the feeding of the 5,000. We were able to use this story in all its parts to make a big display on the board in the hall. We also were able to show the children the twelve baskets of fish and bread which were left after everyone was fed.

All too soon it was time for us to prepare for our Easter gift for the congregation. (Where does the time go?) We got in some practice for our Palm Sunday service and we are fortunate that members of the congregation do enjoy the contribution of the young people at these family services.

People always take time to thank us and say how much they have enjoyed the young people of the Bible Class and Sunday School in their singing and readings.

Our gift this year to the congregation was a Guardian Angel, Mr. Jessamine used the theme of Angels and how they guard us, as a children’s address and the children were delighted with the story and also that people thought so much of the gift that they had made. Since we have returned from the Easter break we are working hard at preparing for a morning, at the beginning of June, when parents will be invited along to see and hear what we have been doing this session. We are having a Praise Morning. We hope that we will lift the roof of the hall with our singing, our laughter and joy, that we are privileged to have the freedom to be able to praise the Lord in this way.

We are truly blessed and privileged as teaching staff to work with so many lovely children. They are a credit to their parents and their

21

interest in the teachings of Jesus helps make our job so much easier. We will be losing 6 children this year who will be moving out of primary education and going off to High School. Already they have paid one visit to the Bible Class and will have other visits before the end of the session, so that the move after the summer holidays can be as smooth as possible. It is always a pleasure to report how things are progressing in Sunday School and we continue throughout the session to have new children join us from time to time. Although we are coming to the end of this session please remind people you know who have children of 3 years and upwards to think about joining us in the next session. We have a very healthy Sunday School but always have space for more. Dates for the Diary

LADIES FORUM

Once again the Spring Tea provided members and friends with a most enjoyable afternoon. The entertainment, ably performed, by the Dunfermline Strathspey and Reel Society was much appreciated. Judging from the amount of clapping and toe tapping I am sure that members of the audience would have been tempted to display their dancing skills had more space been available. The proceeds from the afternoon enabled us to donate £100.00 to the Abbeyfield Dunfermline Society Ltd. and £56.00 to Erskine Hospital.

At the Annual General Meeting official business was quickly and efficiently dispensed with. Members then enjoyed a short musical quiz followed by afternoon tea.

We look Forward to our outing to Aberfeldy and Callander on 12

th May

hoping to bring this year’s programme of events to a happy and successful conclusion.

The President and committee thank all members for their support and friendship.

We wish you a very happy holiday.

Catherine Morgan, Secretary

MEN’S LEISURE GROUP Now that May, June, July and August are upon us, and Winter made glorious Summer, our stern alarms of intense competition are changed to merry meetings with spouses and members of The Ladies Forum on the first Wednesday of each month.

The return of Andy Beveridge to win the championship trophy was inevitable in light of weak challenges from the dynamic duo of our

23

junior section and it was the redoubtable and mature Jim Anderson who emerged as a worthy runner up.

Our annual luncheon and prizegiving takes place at Keavil House

Hotel where we welcome our incoming President Robert McNeil.

Deliberations are in progress as to what event might replace our Cheese and Wine Evening and the Ladies Forum is being consulted. Suggestions or representations for retention may be addressed to any member of either organisation or deposited in my pigeon hole, in the South Porch, clearly marked in favour of Cheese and Wine and signed Alcoholic Anonymous.
