The Monarch of

Spring 2013 Edition

Madonna has been a huge part of my family since it began in 1969. My brother Jack was one of the first students to at-tend and graduate from the school. Having grown up with a brother with Down syndrome, I knew from the beginning, that I wanted to work with people with special needs, and started volunteering for Special Olympics and Mid-South ARC summer camp. After student teaching at Madonna, I graduated from Memphis State University with a Master’s degree in Education and over the next 30 years, worked with infants to adults in the Memphis City, Shelby County, Catholic Diocese School Systems, private preschool and the Harwood Center. I served as President of Special Olympics Executive Committee, received Shelby County Teacher of the Year, Pilot Club International Special Education Teacher of

the Year award, and the Lori M. Siegal Partners in Progress Award from the Down Syndrome Asso-ciation of the Mid-South. My husband Blair and I have raised 4 children.

Madonna Learning Center has continued to be a strong academic school, rich in tradition and power-ful in faith. It is by faith that drives us to continue our mission. We are amazingly blessed to have such faithful friends and families that support our mission to build a brighter future for our students and adults. We have exciting plans ahead of us and invite all of you to be a part of our journey!

Keva Ford - Administrative Assistant

I am the Administrative Assistant at Madonna Learning Center. I joined MLC in October 2006. Prior to my employment at MLC, I worked for seven years at Spe-cial Kids and Families as the Office Manager. Before Special Kids, I was the ad-ministrative assistant to former MLC Board of Directors President Tom Tompkins at FedEx. I held that position for three years. I have over sixteen years’ clerical ex-perience and over twenty three years’ experience in the special needs community. I am also a military and Operations Dessert Storm veteran (United States Navy). While stationed in Bremerton, WA for 4 years I volunteered numerous hours at The Morgan Center in Seattle, WA a school for kids and adults with severe develop-mental disabilities. I am a certified (MOUS) Microsoft Office User Specialist and Electronic Technician.

Cynthia Salem - Finance Manager Greetings Madonna family and friends! As the finance manager, I take care of all things financial pertaining to the day-to-day running of the school. I also address technology issues as they arise. I have the privilege of working closely with all MLC staff, along with our families, and it is truly a privilege! I’ve been at MLC since February 2011. As for my background, I’m a native of this area, born a Navy brat at the hospital formerly in Millington. I have lived in the Millington / Mem-phis area most of my life, with the exception of my Jr. High and Sr. High years that were spent in Mountain Home, AR. I currently hold a AS degree in Business Infor-mation Systems from State Tech, a MS in Information Technology and a MBA in Finance from Christian Brothers University. I have worked more than 30 years in varying roles in corporate information technology. I am a 2011 graduate of the Partners in Policymaking program offered through the Tennessee Council on De-velopment Disabilities. My only child, Adrian, is now 15 years old, has Down syn-drome, and has been a student at Madonna Learning Center since he was five.

Rebekah Bruce—New Program Director

It is wonderful to be back at Madonna. I completed my student teaching here under the guidance and direction of the sisters. I hold degrees in Special Education from Mem-phis State University and Early Childhood Education from the University of Memphis. I returned here after working in the Memphis City School system. Sister Mary Mark, Sister Ruth Ann and Sister Judy have been important influences in my life personally and professionally. I have taught over the last 30 years in the Memphis City, Shelby County, and Catholic Diocese Schools but Madonna has always held my heart. The family atmosphere here and the collaborative effort that goes into educating each stu-dent make this an extra ordinary place. I love teaching and can’t imagine anything bet-ter than being involved in the development and education of a child. It is a treat to work with such dedicated teachers and staff. I am blessed to be back in this special place.

Madonna held its 44th Annual Benefit Gala on February 23rd at CBHS. Spon-sorships and auction items set record numbers! The Soul Shockers provided the entertainment again this year and everyone had a rocking time! Chef Leake, the Southwest TN Community College Culinary Students, and the American Culinary Federation prepared and served exquisite food in elegant style. The live and silent auctions had something for everyone to bid on, thanks to our community donors. It is always a great party and we are look-ing forward to our 45th Gala on February 22, 2014 in Heffernan Hall Christian Brothers High School. Save the Date!

Christmas Play 2012

Gala 2013

Christmas play time at MLC is one of excitement, anticipation, and joy. It is also a time for hard work, concentration, and perseverance by the staff and the students. From the first performance to the final curtain, the families and the community are entertained and enlightened by the pure, heart-felt joy of the students as their spirit shines forth in their performance.

The play “Simple Gifts” was based on a story Papa Panov’s Special Christmas written by Leo Tolstoy, and tells the story of how a young boy finds God in others while helping to meet the needs of others.

The 2013 play will be performed at the Germantown Performing Arts Center and is free, however donations are welcome. Through donations from the community, we can con-tinue the development of educational opportunities and provide and support for special needs students and their families. There will be plenty of parking and seats available for all who wish to experience the simple and awesome gifts of Christmas from the students at Madonna Learning Center.

Celebration Troupe Madonna Learning Center is to be celebrated, and that is what the Celebration Troupe of MLC does! Made up of 10 students from different classes, Celebration comes together to share a beautifully spoken word and artistic movement through song and sign. A troupe member’s sister wanted the world to hear the inspirational words of her sister with special needs, and her ideal sparked the creation of our Celebration Troupe.

The sole mission of this troupe is to spread joy, peace, and acceptance among us. Together the troupe shares one voice to share the mission, and share with our community to give their powerful message. A visit to Christ Methodist Day school brought much light and inspiration to the audience. The students at this school were so impressed and inspired by the Celebration Troupe that they wrote beautiful letters to the members. One stu-dent wrote:

“ Thank you Celebration Group for performing for us. It reminded me that God is always with us. It made me feel better that day.”

The troupe is truly a blessing to be a part of and to see perform. They have so much courage and conviction as they perform for others around the community. If you are interested in having the troupe perform for you, please contact Madonna Learning Center. We would love to hear from you and to share our message and voice.

MLC’s Valentine’s Day Party 2013 Jim Johnson’s band celebrated their 25th year of play-ing for our annual Valentine’s Day party. He was de-lighted to see all 7 members of his retired band return to play. Everyone had a wonderful time dancing and performing the tra-ditional conga dance. Jim shared that playing for the Madonna fami-lies and students is a highlight of his year. They love seeing such happi-ness in their faces as they dance and enjoy each other’s company. Love was in the air!

Madonna Summer Camps 2013

Camp Fly High

Arts for All Art for All began as a summer day camp to introduce the visual and perform-ing arts to students with disabilities. Through the years it has evolved into a workshop where students refine their skills as they continue to explore and dis-cover their artistic voice. The workshop is taught by Madonna Learning Center artistic staff - Pam VanGilder and Erin D. H. Williams (dance), Anne Froning (visual art), and Noel Wilkins (music). Teresa Krug is our nurse and assistant coordinator. Last year the workshop took place at Hutchison School but this year will return to the previous location at the studios of Ballet Memphis. The workshop will be held the week of July 15-19 from 9:00-3:00.

Camp Fly High is one of the newest programs offered by Madonna Learning Center. It is an eight-week camp that pro-vides a recreational summer camp for children and young adults with special needs. Last summer, we open our doors for Camp Fly High's first summer. We were blessed to have the opportunity to minister to other students and adults from the Memphis area. During the school year, Madonna offers several educational and social opportunities for individuals with special needs within the school environment. Now, Madonna offers addi-tional recreational experiences during the summer that are outside the school-like setting. Last summer, we were able to provide a fun-filled camp experience to over 30 campers each week. Each day, campers are placed with a small group of peers along with a group leader and several volunteers. Campers enjoy an array of activities such as arts and crafts, indoor and

outdoor activities, sensory activities, cooking classes, special guests, swim time at the Memphis Jew-ish Community Center, and therapeutic recreation. This summer, we are excited about the addition of offering classes instructed by both a movement specialist as well as a music teacher.

At Camp Fly High, our number one priority is to ensure all campers are fully engaged in all activities throughout the day. With the addition of Camp Fly High in the summer, Madonna Learning Center is now able to offer a recreational program to all individuals with special need even when school is out!

Madonna Learning Center Services

Speech and language (SLP) therapy sessions target individual goals in language development and articulation skills. Games and activities are used to provide a context for the introduction and practice of the concepts, struc-tures, or speech sounds. Alternative communication de-vices and signing are also used to enhance communica-tion.

Occupational Therapy (OT) helps students per-form their daily living tasks, especially self-care and learning activities. Occupational therapy aims to help students achieve independence. Sr. Joan Byrne will as-sist a student with improving handwriting, visual motor skills, coordination and strengthening of the fine motor skills

Madonna Learning Center offers a wide variety of specialty classes and therapies, each one tar-geting specific needs for our students. These specialty classes range from speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, dance/movement, to physical education. Based on the classrooms and child’s needs these classes and therapies are offered once to twice a week.

Movement class addresses four ar-eas of development: physiological, emo-tional, social, and cognitive. They ex-plore and create their own dances, copy movement patterns, and experience the joy of self-expression while developing important neurological brain-body con-nections.

Physical Education the PE program at Madonna focuses on individual sport skills for developing body awareness, bal-ance, and eye-hand coordination. We also focus on team building activities for devel-oping communication, cooperation, and social skills.

Music class is directed by Noel Wilkins, a certified Orff in-structor. The Orff philosophy en-courages children to experience music at their own level of under-standing. Children are encour-aged to learn in their natural en-vironment of play. Improvisation is encouraged to allow children to explore the possibilities in mu-sic.

Visual Arts encourages creative expression, celebrates each person’s unique abilities and enhances self-esteem through participation in the art making process. This process includes drawing painting, collage, and printmaking (two dimensional art) as well as ceramics and sculpture (three dimensional art).

The After School Programs at Madonna Learning Center are offered once a week and are used to help instill the knowledge taught during the day. Madonna offers drama, visual arts, dance, and yoga.

Dance Each Thursday 14 students from Madonna Learning Center climb in the Madonna van (and Mrs. Krug’s car) and travel to the studio at Ballet Memphis for their weekly dance class. Dancing in the studio has many advantages, the first being the sprung dance floor. Dancing on concrete is very hard on the joints of the body and even more so for our stu-dents. The sprung floor is resilient, softening the impact of all movement, especially buoyant movements such as gallop-ing and skipping. Secondly the studio is equipped with barres and mirrors. The mirrors provide feedback, allowing the students to see how their bodies are moving and the barres provide support in learning the foundational work. And thirdly, the professional dancers of Ballet Memphis are in rehearsal right down the hall and the students have the oppor-tunity to observe their rehearsals. After watching the company we return to the studio and talk about what we have seen. Quite often the Madonna dancers also show us movement they recognize and new movements they would like to learn. The journey to and from the studio, is well worth the benefits the studio provides and we are grateful to Ballet Memphis for accommodating us.

Yoga starts by working with the breath to help the students slow down and fo-cus. We then connect the breath with the yoga poses to strengthen and lengthen the physical body. We also work in finding balance and a sense of steadiness to help the students find their center.

Drama is exploring feelings, emotions, and real-life situations using poetry, movement, and short scenes. Madonna students have a great time learning to express themselves and relate to each other in new ways using our imagina-tions.

For over ten years, a special group from the Knights of Columbus at Incarnation Parish called Silver Foxes, have partnered with the Senior High students and BIG trainees to create hand-made wood items. We are fortunate at Madonna Learning Center that the Silver Foxes chose to spend every Wednesday morning with us. Beginning at 8:45, the Silver Foxes start with the BIG trainees and rotate groups until lunch. They make a variety of items including rosary beads, coffee mug holders, snowmen, Lazy Susans, pencil boxes, and even large items such as Adirondack chairs and tables. Some of the items are even auctioned off at the Madonna Gala. Students and trainees work not only on wood working skills but also lis-tening comprehension, auditory processing skills, and visual/spatial skills. The students and trainees look forward to spending time with the Silver Foxes every week.

Aktion Club and Terrific Kids

The Germantown Kiwanis Club offers the Terrific Kids Pro-gram for our students. The students are recognized each month for outstanding achievements and are awarded with gifts and certificates for their accomplishments.

The Aktion Club organization was established at Madonna to empower our adults in providing services to the commu-nity and to become leaders for their school. They are in-ducted into the club and trained to lead discussions and decisions in the group. The students meet once a month with volunteers from the Germantown Kiwanis Club.

Christmas Celebration

Madonna was blessed to have the local UNICO corporation sponsor a Christmas party for our students. Everyone was treated to crafts, pizza, cookies and drinks along with a visit from Santa. The Shriner Hillbillies entertained our students during a Christ-mas party with fruit baskets for the staff and gifts for the stu-dents.

Alumni Christmas Party and Ice Skating

Madonna students, staff and alumni braved the ice in January for our first annual ice skating fundraiser at the Mid-South Ice House. There were tears of laughter and pain from the staff but big smiles of accomplishment from the adults and students.

The annual Alumni Christmas party was held at Madonna. Eve-ryone had a fabulous time dancing, eating and sharing time with each other. Many of our Alumni have advanced their education into col-lege or have obtained gainful employment in the community. We are proud to include a Madonna graduate as part of our teaching assistant staff.
