Student Council Campaigning After meeting all the requirements to be eligible to run for Student Council, students must adhere to the following campaign guidelines:

● Each candidate may create one poster (no larger than 22 x 28 inches) to display in their classroom (at the teacher’s approval). Posters may be displayed beginning on Tuesday.

● Candidates MAY NOT give out treats to classmates. ● Candidates will write and read a speech to their class prior to student voting.

*If students do not adhere to the campaign guidelines, they will be disqualified from the election.* Classroom Voting All students in Grade 3 through Grade 5 will be permitted to vote for Student Council members. Voting will be done by a secret ballot in each classroom. Winners for each classroom will be announced at the end of the school day. In the event of a tie, a revote would be conducted. If the end results are the same, both candidates would serve as representatives. Teachers are responsible for turning in their election results to the Student Council sponsors (all votes). In the case where a classroom does not have anyone interested to run for the representative position, the classroom teacher should contact one of the Student Council sponsors to seek further action. Student Council Membership The term of the Student Council members will be September 2018-September 2019. It will be the responsibility of each member to:

o Maintain A/B average grades throughout the school year. o Maintain high conduct standards and have minimal discipline referrals throughout the school

excuse). o Participate in special projects and events as determined by the Student Council during the school

year. ● If any Student Council representative fails to meet the standards as set forth above, he/she may be placed

on probation or removed from the Student Council at the discretion of the Student Council advisor and principal.

● If a Student Council representative is removed or moves during the school year, the position will be filled by the at-large (runner-up) from the election, if deemed necessary by the sponsors. (Example: If a representative moves late in the school year, the position may not be filled.)

Celebration Singers! Parents, Guardians, Fourth, and Fifth graders,

This is an invitation for you to join the Celebration Singers, an after-school choir for fourth and fifth grade students at Macon Elementary. The choir will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:45 – students will go to second-bell recess and then come to the music room at 3:30.

The Celebration Singers will perform at the Veterans Day Assembly in November (during school), at the 3rd Grade program in November, and at the 5th Grade program in December. A calendar of rehearsals and events will be sent out at the first rehearsal.

There is no audition or payment required to be in this choir. However, students who choose to participate are expected to attend rehearsals regularly. If a student misses three rehearsals or one performance without notifying me ahead of time, or is not picked up by 5:00pm after rehearsals, he or she will be asked to no longer participate. If a student is involved in other activities, has made prior commitments (tutoring, clubs, etc.), or becomes ill, please let me know ahead of time, and we will try to work something out.

If you are interested in joining Celebration Singers, please return the second page of this letter with your signature, as well as a parent/guardian signature. These forms must be turned in by Friday, September 7th; rehearsals will begin Tuesday, September 11th, a practice and performance schedule will be sent home after the first meeting of Celebration Singers. Thank you! If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the email address listed below. I look forward to working with you this year! The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act is being implemented at Macon R-I School. Please help us with compliance!

Please review the NEW GUIDELINES: Why is this important? We hope to help foster healthy eating and exercise habits for our children. We also take part in the Federal Lunch Program which helps our District provide Free and Reduced Lunches for many learners. Following the guidelines below is important to our school. Educators and families are in this together! We will need everyone's help to comply with The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act.

There are three main areas for us to focus on:

1. Classroom Parties and Celebrations

2. Movement Breaks

3. Access to Water

Classroom Parties and Celebrations: Snacks and treats brought to school for sharing with other students must follow healthy guidelines. We realize this may be a difficult change for all of us to get use to. Teachers may no longer give out candy as rewards. While cupcakes, ice cream and cookies may not be brought in as birthday treats, there are many healthy alternatives. Fresh fruits and vegetables are encouraged, as are many food items which are “baked”, such as Goldfish and Cheez It Crackers. Granola and breakfast cereal bars, Welch’s Fruit Snacks and and low fat yogurt are also permitted snacks for sharing. Please see some sample items from the Smart Snacks in School list on the back of this page. Macon Elementary is permitted to have five events with additional refreshments not listed on the Smart Snacks List. These may be used for Halloween, Christmas, Valentines Day, the end of the year, etc.

Movement Breaks: Learners may be encouraged to stand, stretch, jog in place etc. to keep energized and ready for learning a few times throughout the day. Educators may use a brief interactive video for this purpose such as GoNoodle or one of many other Brain Break videos. Daily recess breaks are also important opportunities for students to get physical exercise.

Access to Water: Students are welcome to bring a plastic water bottle to refill and use during class. Clear plastic bottles are preferred and only water is permitted in the classroom. Again, thanks for helping our kids!

A Note from Macon Elementary Specials Classes…

Page 10: Macon Elementary School AU… · To join the student body and administration together to serve as one voice. To provide opportunities for members and students to serve the community

A Note from Specials Teachers…

We are off to a great start this year in special classes! All students, grades kindergarten through fifth, have exciting opportunities to learn life skills while also having fun in library, art, music, gym, counselor, and keyboarding classes! In order to have a productive period, each class needs to come in prepared and ready to learn and play. As a team, the special class teachers have set up a common discipline plan to help keep students on task and making good choices. The three step process has been an excellent tool to keep students on the right track as we’ve piloted it these first few weeks of school.

● 1st Offense of Making a Poor Choice: Verbal warning by the teacher ● 2nd Offense of Making a Poor Choice: Student moved to the designated “Safe Seat” in the classroom ● 3rd Offense and/or Consistent Poor Choices Student sent to the office with a “Blue Card” for a time out for

and/or a Serious Offense: the remainder of the class OR

Student sent to the office with a “Red Card” to visit with the principal, a written discipline referral on file, and contact home

Although kids wear paint smocks on painting and printmaking days, they don't always protect against every spill or splatter. Please note your child's Art Day and have your kids dress accordingly. Take a look at ART WORK hanging in the elementary halls throughout the year.

Don’t forget your child’s PE DAY so that you send him or her wearing appropriate shoes for physical activities and games.

Please note your child’s LIBRARY DAY so that you can help him or her remember to send library books back on time. Kindergartners check out one book per week. First graders through fifth graders each check out two books per week.

Students are responsible for the books they check out from the library. It is important that they keep them out of reach from young children, away from pets, and in a safe spot indoors. If a book is damaged beyond repair or lost, the student is responsible for paying full price for the book. The price of the book is kept in an online system, operated by Mrs. Meisner. Until the fine is paid, students may not check out a book in its place. In December, unpaid fines result in the loss of the trip to Macon Cinema. In April/May, unpaid fines result in the loss of the end-of-the-year class field trip. Notices are sent home weekly for these instances.

As always, if you have questions about things going on in special classes feel free to e-mail the teacher (listed below) or call
