23 September 2003 going to net lanes 3 & 4

Net lanes 3 and 4 were not flooded in 2009. A combination of beaver activity and flooding in previous years has caused many of the shrubs and trees to die off. Both nets are exposed to the wind and quite visible when it is sunny.

2008: Much of the vegetation has died back due to the flooding and beaver activity. There are some new young willows amongst the sedges and blue joint which seem to be able to withstand the flooding. There are boardwalks to and on both sides of net lane 3. Net lane 4 was not used - water was too deep. Water had receded by the time we closed, but the soil was still real wet on 4.

From our report: Net lane 4 – The willows are coming back on this net lane and there was a good growth of sedges, some marsh cinquefoil, horsetail and grasses, before it flooded. The net lane was dry on the 18th when we set up, but it had flooded by the 20th to the point where we decided to use one of the other net lanes.Net lane 3 – this net lane is still pretty open, but some of the willows that seem to be able to survive the flooding are coming back. The small dead pines at this net lane have mostly rotted off and gone over. This net lane was flooding at the far end by the second day of banding and there was water on it for the remainder of the season. At one point it was necessary to wear hip waders to get to it. During September it was not as busy a net lane so we put a boardwalk out to the close end of it so we could check for birds without putting rubbers on – only putting them on when needed.

open since the beaver removed several trees and the flooding killed others. Some young willows are coming back, but not the alders. The pines are dead.

By 7 July 2005 net lanes 3 & 4 were already flooded and by the time we opened they could not be used.

On the next slide there is a list of the species identified by Gesa Feeders (1998) and Kevin Fort (2003) when the vegetation work was done at the station. Since then a few other species have been identified on these netlanes, two of these are Eastern Eyebright and a bladderwort.
