    EXT. OUTSIDE CASTLE.

    Battle between the Scots and the Irish invaders is seentaking place. Confusion. MACBETH runs through middle and seendestroying everyone in his path. Beheads MACDONWALD.

    CUT TO:

    TITLE ACT 1

    EXT. FOREST

    MACBETH and BANQUO are walking toward the castle. Ominousmusic is playing. Creepy laughter is heard.

    MACBETH

    The gods have been on our side thisday, Banquo.

    BANQUO(Looking around)

    No one can deny that, my Thane, andyet this eerie feeling hangs aboutlike clothes to my body.

    MACBETH turns to BANQUO laughing.

    MACBETHFear not Banquo for whatever

    trouble dare show his face in frontof us will surely not survive toface the next. The greatestwarriors in all of Scotland havenothing to fear.

    MACBETH turns to run into WITCH 1. WITCHES come really closeto both men and walk around them almost seductively.

    WITCH 1Macbeth, so brave and so bold.

    MACBETHHow do you know my name?

    WITCH 2Who doesn't, oh mighty Thane ofGlamis?

    WITCH 3Macbeth, do you believe yourvictories this day will gounrewarded?

    WITCH 1Yes, my dear Thane of Cawdor. Thisjourney has not yet come to an end.

    BANQUO

    For as long as the true Thanelives, Macbeth shall never holdthat title.

    WITCH 2Hush now Banquo, for you will begreater still.

    WITCH 3But for now, hail Macbeth, the Kingof Scotland!

    The WITCHES disappear and Macbeth and Banquo look around for

    them but do not find them.

    BANQUODo you truly believe the claims ofthose three creatures?

    MACBETHLet me ask you this Banquo, do younever wonder what would happen ifyou were the real king?

    MACBETH breaks into song IF I WERE KING OF SCOTLAND

    MACBETH (CONTD)If I were King of Scotland,Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubbadeedle deedle dum.It is my vaulting ambition.To be ruler of all Scotland.I have to kill King Duncan.Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubbadeedle deedle dum.If I were the king of Scotland,I would be a very happy man.

    But the king has put so much trustin meI cannot let him down.As his relative and subject, Ishould protect himI have to show my loyalty to thethroneI shouldnt kill him, Im his host.Im supposed to keep the murderersaway!

    Everybody will weep once they hearthat their precious ruler died.But I REALLY WANT TO BE THE KING!

    Camera watches them walk deeper into the forest. Black out.

    INT. CASTLE ROOM

    DUNCAN is seated on his throne. MALCOLM walks in.

    DUNCANHave you found the traitor?

    MALCOLM

    Yes father, and you can be surethat the dear Thane will dealt withmost lethally.

    DUNCANAnd Macdonwald, what news of thatrascal?

    MALCOLMMacbeth has seen to it that hisrebellion comes to an end.

    DUNCANAh Macbeth, most virtuous of allthe Thanes in my land. We must seeto it that he is greeted with thetraitor's former title.

    (Pause)Yes, Macbeth shall be Thane ofCawdor.

    Enter MESSENGER.

    DUNCAN

    Send them in.

    Exit MESSENGER. Enter MACBETH and BANQUO.

    MACBETHYour Highness.

    (Bows down, on one knee)

    DUNCANRise, virtuous Thane. Yourvictories this day have been thegreatest of my day.

    MACBETHI live to serve you and my country,my liege.

    DUNCANAnd you have served us well. As atoken of our gratitude we give toyou the land of Cawdor.

    MALCOLMAll hail, Macbeth, Thane of Cawdor!

    ALL

    All hail, Macbeth.

    MACBETH(A little shocked)

    I do not believe I deserve an honorso rich, my king.

    DUNCANIf not you, then tell me, who?

    MACBETH(After pause)

    Well then let us celebrate thismomentous occasion at my castle atInverness. I am sure my Lady willbe most pleased to serve you there,my lord.

    INT. MACBETHS BEDROOM

    LADY MACBETH is seen sitting on a chair. She is reading aletter. The words of MACBETH are played back while she isseen reading. Audio Fade In.

    MACBETHThe three witches said not when orhow, but their words were clear.

    (Pause)King of Scotland.

    Words echo. LADY MACBETH puts down letter and gets up.

    LADY MACBETHThe prophesies have begun to cometrue. First, Thane of Cawdor, andthat has been done. And now he must

    wear the crown of the king. He willwear the crown.

    (Pause, looks up, spins)All the spirits of this world andnext. Speak to me, reveal, how thisThane will take the throne. Demonsof ambition, unsex me here. Let mefeel no pain, no regret, no fear.

    (Falls to the ground;screams)

    Enter MESSENGER swiftly, creeped out.

    MESSENGERMy Lady, Macbeth has arrived.

    Exit MESSENGER. Enter MACBETH.

    MACBETHMy love, I have brought the Kinghere to Inverness. See to it thathe is well treated.

    LADY MACBETHWhen will he leave?

    MACBETHTomorrow.

    LADY MACBETHDuncan shall not see the light oftomorrow for this day shall be hislast. The king will end his life,you must see to that. And I will bewith you, right beside, you all ofthe way.

    Song background music begins to play - King Macbeth

    LADY MACBETHYour allegiance is to none butyourself. Kill him, and you will bethe king.

    (Pause.)King Macbeth.

    Lady Macbeth begins to sing KING MACBETH She prepares thepotion for the guards while she does and hands Macbeth daggerat the end.

    LADY MACBETH (CONTD)

    When at first I got this news fromwitches, all the threeI'd be grateful, who wouldn't, toqueen of Scotland beUnless of course the king was Thaneof GlamisAnd when Duncan needs a makeoverI simply have to take overI know you know exactly what heneeds

    And mainly in this case,

    Though you're the weakest Thane inall this placeDon't worry, I'm determined tosucceedFollow my lead,And yes indeed, you will be

    KING MACBETH, You're gonna be KingMacbethI'll teach you the proper ways toget your praiseThe right way to kill the king

    TITLE ACT 2

    INT. CASTLE ROOM

    BANQUO and FLEANCE are present in the room. Camera followsMACBETH who is entering to the room, holding the daggerbehind him. A SERVANT follows

    BANQUOI see you are not sleeping. Theking is in bed. Hes been in angreat mood and has given yourhousehold and servants many giftsfor your hospitality.

    MACBETH

    Truth be told, we were unpreparedfor the kings arrival, so wecouldnt take care of him as wellas hed like.

    BANQUOAll is well.

    (Pauses. Looks around, andquietly says)

    I had a dream last night about thethree witches. Their words heldsome truth to them.

    MACBETHI dont want to think about them.But, later, we must discuss thismatter.

    BANQUOWhatever youd like.

    (As he walks away)And good night.

    BANQUO and FLEANCE exit. MACBETH turns to SERVANT and says ina low voice. Begin BET ON IT music.

    MACBETHTell my wife to sound the bell whenmy drink is ready and then go tobed.

    SERVANTYes, my lord.

    The SERVANT exits. MACBETH begins to sing. The CHORUS arevoices from the castle walls.

    MACBETH(Singing)

    Is this a dagger which I see beforeme?Is the handle pointing toward myhand?Come on dagger, let me clutch youtightly.I dont have you but youre stillright there.

    CHORUSDid you see it?

    MACBETHThe dagger that is floating rightthere

    CHORUSDid you see it?

    INT. MACBETHS BEDROOM

    LADY MACBETH is present. She walks around holding the drink.Speaks boldly, proud of herself.

    LADY MACBETHThe drinks that have made them

    intoxicated have made me bold; whathas quenched their thirst has putme on edge.

    (Pauses. Motions outside.Speaks softly.)

    Listen! Quiet! The owl screechedGood Night like the bell ringingbefore an execution. Macbeth mustbe murdering the king while hisguards look like fools, snoringaway. You cant even tell iftheyre dead or alive given theamount of medicine I put in their

    drinks.

    MACBETH enters into darkness.

    MACBETH(Scared. Speakshesitantly.)

    Who's there? Whats that?

    LADY MACBETHMy husband!

    MACBETHI killed him. Did you not hear anoise?

    LADY MACBETHI heard the owl cry and thecrickets sound. Didnt you saysomething?

    MACBETH(Confused. Scared. Notlistening.)

    When?

    LADY MACBETHJust now, as you came down.

    MACBETHNo.

    (Scared. Motions to door.)Do you hear that? Theyre comingfor me. Theyre screaming my name.

    LADY MACBETH(Concerned.)

    Who? Who screams your name?

    MACBETHThe guards. They say Macbeth,Macbeth sleeps no more. Do you nothear them?

    (Scared. Looks abouthimself.)

    MACBETH continues to speak, almost inaudible. LADY MACBETHattempts to soothe her husbands, calm him down.

    MACBETH (CONTD)(Quielty. To himself.)

    I thought I heard a voice cry

    Sleep no more! Macbeth murderssleep. Innocent sleep. Sleep knitsup the unraveled sleeve of care. Itis the death of each days life.Sleep relieves the weary laborerand heals hurt minds. Sleep is themain and most nourishing course oflifes feast.

    LADY MACBETH(Meanwhile.)

    Hush. Hush. Listen Macbeth. Thereis nothing. Hush now.

    MACBETH is now more worried. Holds up dagger with blood onit. It falls to the floor.

    LADY MACBETH (CONTD)You must take that dagger back.Smear the blood on the guards.

    MACBETH is louder now. Moves away from LADY MACBETH, scared.

    LADY MACBETH

    (Picking up dagger)Coward! I will do it. The Dead andSleeping cant hurt you any morethan pictures can.

    She leaves. MACBETH quietly slumps to a corner. Camera zoomsin on his trembling, sweaty face.

    BLACK OUT.

    EXT. CASTLE DOOR.

    MACDUFF and LENNOX knocking on the door. A PORTER opens thedoor. He is drunk. Looks sheepishly at the men.

    MACDUFFDid you have such a late night thatit was hard for you to get up justnow?

    PORTERSorry, sir. We were up lateentertaining the king.

    MACDUFF

    Where is your master? Is he awake?

    MACBETH enters. Frazzled.

    LENNOXGood morning, Macbeth.

    MACBETHAnd to you two.

    MACDUFFIs the king stirring, thane? I wastold to wake him this early hour.

    MACBETHNo. But I shall take you to him.

    MACDUFFI know being the host to KingDuncan is both an honor and atrouble, but it is still a trouble,nonetheless.

    MACBETHThe work we enjoy is not reallywork. Heres his door.

    MACDUFF

    Ill wake him up. Its my job.

    MACDUFF exits. LENNOX and MACBETH converse.

    LENNOXLast night was bizarre. People aresaying they heard cries of grief inthe air, strange screams of death,and terrible voices predictingcatastrophes.

    (Pauses.)Some people say that the earthshook as if it had a fever.

    MACBETHIt was a rough night.

    LENNOXIve never seen anything like it.

    MACDUFF returns with fury.

    MACDUFFThe horror! This is beyond words!Unbelievable!

    MACBETH(Trying to look concerned)

    What's the matter?

    MACDUFFGo into the bedroom and see foryourself. Whats in there will makeyou freeze with horror.

    MACBETH and LENNOX exit. MACDUFF confused, paces around.Yells to the SERVANT.

    MACDUFF (CONTD)Wake up, wake up! Ring the alarmbell. Murder and treason! Banquoand Donalbain, Malcolm! Wake up!Ring the bell.

    Bell Rings. Commotion is heard. Enter LADY MACBETH andBANQUO.

    LADY MACBETHWhats going on? Why is thatterrifying trumpet callingtogether everyone whos sleeping inthe house?

    MACDUFFOh, Banquo. The king has beenmurdered!

    LADY MACBETHHow horrible! How could this happenin our own house?

    BANQUOMacduff, please tell us that youare lying!

    MACBETH and LENNOX re-enter with ROSS.

    LENNOXIt is true. He has been murdered.

    MALCOLM enters with DONALBAIN.

    MALCOLMWho? Who has been murdered?

    MACBETHYour father. The guards, thoseguards killed him. And I have had

    the pleasure of doing the same tothem.

    MACDUFFWhy would you do that?

    MACBETHIs it possible to be wise,bewildered, calm, furious, loyal,and neutral all at once? Nobody cando that. I let my love for Duncanfuel my rage against them.

    MACBETH exits with LENNOX. LADY MACBETH faints. The other menattend to her.

    MALCOLM(Aside. To Donalbain.)

    We must leave now or else we willbe next.

    Youve got it all now... Glamis,Cawdor, all of Scotland.

    (Pause.)

    Everything the Weird Sisterspromised. Yet, I have a feelingthat there was foul play on yourpart, Macbeth. Something isdefinitely not right here.

    Enter MACBETH. Seems to be in a happy mood.

    MACBETHBanquo! My good friend! I am tohave a feast tonight, and I amrequesting your presence.

    BANQUO(Cold. Muttering)

    May your kingship command me. I amsworn to abide by your highness.

    MACBETH(Looking at the bags)

    Ah but it seems you ride thisafternoon?

    BANQUOAy my lord. If there horses performwell it should not take but two

    hours.

    MACBETHThat is great, simply, do notforget our feast. And your son,Fleance?

    BANQUOHe comes with me too.

    MACBETHWell then my friend, travel safelyand be swift. Farewell Banquo.

    BANQUO exits. Camera pans to MACBETHs face. MURDERER 1 stepout of the shadows.

    MACBETH (CONTD)Kill them.

    MURDERER 1Ay my lord.

    MURDERER 1 bow and exit the room. Camera remains on Macbethsface and then black out.

    BLACK OUT.

    EXT. FOREST

    It is dark, past dusk. The MURDERERS wait on a small hill forthe Banquo, looking down. The camera moves around them asMURDERER 1 begins to sing MY FRIENDS.

    MURDERER 1(Singing.)

    Hello my friends.Lets plan a murder.Ut's Banquo's timeHow he smiles in the light.

    My friends.He needs to die.

    King told me friends.ListenWe're to killI knowIts timeWe strike at midnightWith our might!It's time My friendsWell let us go and kill Banquo.Oh! And Fleance too

    And we'll do wonders.Won't we?my murderous friends!

    Come, we must leave quickly.Now,Ah, the knife grows warm in my handMy friends!Lets go my friends

    Come now my friendsnow we'll unseam youSoon you'll feel cold deathIts time to dreamLets end your daysMy mortal friendI hear your cryHow I hold this swordFriends, he shall drip rubiesYou'll soon drip precious rubies

    As the crescendo heightens, BANQUO and FLEANCE are seenwalking through the forest. At the height of the music,BANQUO yells with a fury to FLEANCE.

    BANQUO

    Fly good Fleance, fly, fly, fly!

    The MURDERERS land on the ground.

    MURDERER 1(Spoken.)

    At last. Banquo, prepare to meetyour doom.

    The following shot shows the shadow of the MURDERERS as theyattack BANQUO.

    BLACK OUT.

    INT. DINING HALL

    Large rectangular dining table visible. Many people arestanding, chatting. Camera catches MACBETH and moves in. Heis having a conversation until LADY MACBETH pulls him tostart the feast.

    LADY MACBETH(Aside.)

    We are all very antsy to begin thefeast.

    MACBETH(Aside.)

    Yes my lady.(To the rest. Loud.)

    Good Evening my friends! You knowyour own degrees. Please, sit down,and enjoy my feast for you!

    (Ends abruptly.)

    MACBETH sees MURDERER 1 motioning to him at the doorway.MACBETH loses focus for a moment and then addresses guests.

    MACBETH (CONTD)Excuse me my friends, a matterurges my attention.

    MACBETH walks out of the hall into the CASTLE ROOM. The noiseof the dining room fades away. MACBETH pulls murderers away.

    INT. CASTLE ROOM

    MACBETHThere is blood upon they face.

    MURDERER 1It is about Banquo. His throat hasbeen cut for you.

    MACBETHYou are the best of the cutthroats!You have killed father and son justas you were asked!

    MURDERER 1Im afraid, good king, that Fleancehas escaped.

    MACBETH(Contemplative)

    That troubles me but I shall notworry about it too much. ThaneBanquo is dead? Good, then leave. Iwill call you at a later time.

    MURDERER 1 leaves room. LADY MACBETH enters from the dininghall.

    LADY MACBETHMy lord, you must return to thefeast. They need your attention.

    MACBETH(Still contemplating)

    Very well.

    INT. DINING HALL

    MACBETH walks in and begins to sing. Everyone turns to facehim as he moves about.

    MACBETHThere's a banquet going on righthereA celebration to last throughoutthe yearsSo bring your hot wives, and yourbeer tooIm gonna celebrate my kingshipwith you

    GHOST BANQUO walks into the room and continues song. MACBETHis walking around the room.

    BANQUOYou jerk you killed me and you

    tried to kill my son

    ALLCelebration

    MACBETH(Scared. Walking faster.)

    Lets all celebrate and have a goodtime.

    LADY MACBETHIt's time to get your act together!Whats wrong with you?

    What's your problem?

    MACBETH(Beckons everyone tofollow him out the room)

    Everyone in Dunsinane, Come on!

    Everyone else is frazzled and goes outside. MACBETH is aloneand falls on top of table. LADY MACBETH returns and speaks.

    LADY MACBETHGet yourself to bed.

    (Agitated)

    How can I possibly explain yourbehavior to them?

    MACBETHDo what you must and I will do whatI must.

    (Getting up from table)And what I need to do is find whereFate will lead me next.

    Camera zooms in on his face. Intent, determined.

    BLACK OUT.

    TITLE ACT 4

    EXT. FOREST

    Scary sounds are heard through the trees as the WITCHESprepare the potion. Focus on cauldron. WITCH 1 and WITCH 2move around it. WITCH 3 stays looking at it.

    WITCH 1The onyx cat has meowed three times

    WITCH 2Really? Three times? The hedgehog

    only squealed once.

    WITCH 3(Watching the cauldron.Excited.)

    Tis time! Tis time! Harpier criesTis time!

    ALLDouble, double toil and trouble,Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.

    (Cackles.)

    WITCH 1We will boil you next: A snake!

    WITCH 2A newts eye and a frogs tongue!

    WITCH 3A bears claw and an owls wing!

    WITCH 1Make this charm boil and bubblelike a broth from Hell!

    ALL resume to cackling. WITCH 3 stops, while WITCH 1 andWITCH 2 continue dancing about the pot. WITCH 3 listens forsound.

    WITCH 3There is a tingling in my thumbssisters. Something wicked this waycomes.

    Noises of leaves falling and crunching are heard. A manappears in the darkness. It is MACBETH.

    MACBETHWhat is it you do at this hour, yousecret hags?

    (Pauses. Uninterested.Questioningly)

    Never mind that, I dont know howyou know the things you do, but youMUST answer my questions. I amstruck by fear of what has yet tocome. Tell me what I want to know,now!

    The WITCHES look at each other, smiling.

    WITCH 1Speak.

    WITCH 2Demand.

    WITCH 3(Leaning in.)

    And we will give thee a clue.

    MACBETHTell me what is to pass. Thesuspense is terrifying.

    WITCH 1 motions to the cauldron as they move around it.

    WITCH 1Appear from the cauldron, you evilspirits. And show Macbeth what youknow!

    APPARITION 1 is a soldier, BANQUO, with helmet on his head.Rises from the cauldron.

    APPARITION 1Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! BewareMacduff. Beware the thane of Fife.

    (Pauses. Look about.)Let me go now. Enough.

    MACBETHTell me -

    WITCH 2(Angered.)

    You will not command the higherspirits. He will speak, and youwill listen.

    APPARITION 1 dissolves and out of the cauldron rises thesecond. APPARITION 2 is the bloodied child, MACDUFFS SON.

    APPARITION 2Be bloody, bold, and resolute.Laugh to scorn the power of man,for no one who is born of womanshall ever harm you, Macbeth.

    MACBETH(Arrogantly.)

    Ha! With such prophecies, I neednot worry.

    APPARITION 2 dissolves as the first did and the last rises.APPARITION 3 is a crowned child, FLEANCE.

    APPARITION 3Macbeth shall never vanquished be

    until great woods of Birnam Forestmoves to high Dunsinane Hill.

    Last APPARITION dissolves into the cauldron. Speaks after amoment. MACBETH is processing what he has heard.

    The Thane has fled to England, mylord.

    MACBETHThen seize his castle at Fife andkill everyone unwise enough to seekrefuge there.

    Music crescendos. The murderers leave. Focus is still onMACBETHs face.

    The camera approaches the castle. The murderers walk by thecamera. Camera stops and pans out. Focus on castle.

    MACDUFF(First silent, then bold.)

    There is no time for weeping. Onlyfor vengeance. Macbeth will pay forhis crimes. He will pay dearly.

    MALCOLMSuit up, and lets avenge yourchildren and family. Lets bringthe Divine hammer down on Macbethsevil rampage.

    SIWARDYes, Lord Macduff. We will allfight together, English and Scot,and together we will returnScotlands throne to its rightfulheir.

    EXT. FOREST

    The soldiers are dispersed throughout the forest and seem tobe preparing for the battle. MALCOLM walks around and stopsfor a moment and speaks to all.

    MALCOLMEvery soldier, take a branch of thetree and shade yourself with it.

    Macbeth has been abandoned by hisbest, and we shall take Scotlandback.

    The soldiers are seen pulling branches off of the trees andeach fumbles with them. Camera captures this commotion.

    INT. CASTLE ROOM

    A scream echoes through the castle. MACBETH and LENNOX riseto their feet.

    MACBETHWhat is that wretched noise?Lennox, find out!

    LENNOX exits hurriedly. MACBETH worried, trying not to show.

    MACBETH (CONTD)Fear does not even strike a chordin my heart any longer. I am numbto those disastrous thoughts.

    LENNOX returns in the same manner. Does not want to speak.

    LENNOXYour queen my lord, she is dead.

    LENNOX exits. MACBETH ponders the thought for a moment.

    MACBETHThe deed must have led her to thedeath.

    The MESSENGER leaves in a hurry. MACBETH looks worried now.Camera focus on his face.

    BLACK OUT.

    EXT. OUTSIDE CASTLE.

    Loud drums of the army fades in. They are not far from theforest. Camera is moving in to focus on the army, leaveshiding their faces. They stop.

    MALCOLMThrow those branches down and beprepared for battle. Siward, leadthe first battle. Macduff and Iflank left and fight the remainingforces.

    SIWARDLets stop Macbeth for good.

    The branches go down and half of the army follows SIWARDhurriedly to the castle. Camera watches them approach loomingcastle.

    INT. CASTLE ROOM

    MACBETH is looking outside the window. Troops enter into theroom, led by SIWARDS SON.

    SIWARDS SON(Poised to attack.)

    Who are you?

    MACBETHYoure worst nightmare.

    (Pause for effect.)Im Macbeth.

    SIWARDS SONThe devil! With my sword, Ill endyou once and for all.

    MACBETH and SIWARDS SON begin to fight but the young boy isno match for MACBETH. He kills the son with ease and as hetakes a moment, turned around, to gloat, MACDUFF entershurriedly and starts to speak to MACBETH who is turnedaround.

    MACDUFFTurn around fool and show your trueface, you tyrant.

    MACDUFFThen I guess I am the only one whocan. I was born of a caesareansection, I was from my motherswomb, untimely ripped.

    MACBETHThose wretched witches! They playedon my pride, and they won. I wontfight you, Macduff.

    MACDUFFThen give up, coward.

    MACBETHI will never kiss this ground indefeat.

    (Hesitates.)Come, let us fight to the death.

    They begin to fight and the battle is an intense one. They goat it and the camera blacks out before the fight begins.

    BLACK OUT.

    EXT. OUTSIDE CASTLE.

    Soldiers are running all around. Amidst the commotion, SIWARDstands with MALCOLM. MALCOLM has his hand around SIWARD,comforting him.

    SIWARD(Smiles.)

    We just cannot wait for you to be

    king, my good lord.

    The troops begin to surround them as MACDUFF begins to singHE JUST CANT WAIT TO BE KING.

    MACDUFF(Singing.)

    He's gonna be the greatest king,that Scotland's ever seen

    MALCOLMWell, better than Macbeth at leastThe king who was just mean

    MACDUFFHe's gonna have the longest ruleLike no king had before

    MALCOLMI'm putting on my father's crownRecapturing the Throne

    MACDUFFWell, it used to be a ratherglorious thing.

    MALCOLMOh I just cant wait to be king.
