Our vision is to become a one-stop source for families to find services, information, and other resources to help their children living with Autism, learning difficulties, and other developmental disorders. We also aim to ensure that our services are affordable for as many Macau families as possible.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Parents, Members and Friends,

As I contemplate on what MCDA has done for the past seven years, I am proud of all that we accomplished. This would not have been possible without the many generous supporters who have believed in our aim and vision of helping the children of Macau.

Sincerely,

Macau has grown into a world-class business and tourist city. The forces of economic globalization have significantly impacted people’s lives. Years ago, parents like me with children with Autism and Learning Difficulties had no place to go other than mentally handicapped institutions. Services for our children like Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy were not available. Parents were left with the hard choice of locking their children in the comfort of their homes, accepting that there is no available service, or leaving Macau. MCDA was created to prevent this cruel reality from happening. We know that change doesn’t come overnight; we already see some services emerging to provide effective answers to these children and I am glad Macau’s awareness on Autism and other related developmental and learning disorders has significantly increased. However, I continue witnessing many parents facing the same dilemmas, as the needs remain bigger than the answers in Macau. It is our intent to continue working to achieve our goals by collaborating with other institutions and Macao’s government to create a deeper understanding and increase awareness of this social need. In view of that, in December, MCDA has launched a campaign to gain the support to build a SCHOOL and THERAPY CENTER for ALL children no matter who they are, what their parents do, what language they speak, what their religion is, whether they are a boy or girl, what their culture is, whether they have a disability or disorder, whether they are rich or poor. Macao’s law is education for all, and we strongly believe in it! This school aims to bridge the gap and create balance in our education system. Some people may see this DREAM is unnecessary. Some people may not understand the things we are advocating for. But children on our waiting list scream too loud for us to ignore this reality. Therefore, MCDA will stand beside the parents and the children who need such a place… a school and therapy services to attend…. where they will feel safe and respected, where their individual needs are met and where equal opportunity is given.

Early Intervention Program (EIP) The EIP in MCDA is a program designed especially for children aged 1 – 4 that may have developmental, communication, and/or social delay, attention difficulties and/or autism symptoms, among others. This program focuses on areas of development, such as: gross motor, fine motor, language, cognitive, pre-writing, personal and self-help skills. Services offered in this program are: Integrated Learning Through Play Activity, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Psycho-motor Therapy, Behavior Modification Intervention, Floor Time, Home Program, among others in individual therapy sessions or group therapy sessions. In 2011, a total of 48 children benefitted from these services. Our aim for 2012 is to support the 50 more children in our waiting-list.

Formative Years Program (FYP)

These are individual and/or integrated groups for children with autism or learning difficulties. The FYP in MCDA is a program is for children 5 – 14 years that may be presenting difficulties at school such as, developmental, communication, emotional and/or social, attention difficulties and/or autism. These programs focus on skills, such as: following instructions, dealing with transitions,

developing enough environment modifications, promoting cognitive, emotional,

communication/social skills and comprehension skills in order to promote school

achievement and a better integration at school, home and community settings.

Services offered in this program are: Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Psycho-motor Therapy, Behavior Modification Intervention, Educational Psychology, Special Education, Academic Support, Home Program, School Program, Advocacy, among others. A total of 40 children received these services in 2011. By 2012, we hope to help at least 50 additional children who are on our waiting-list.

Occupational Therapy (OT) Occupational therapists assess the motor and visual-motor, cognitive-perceptual, sensory and everyday functional skills of the child. All these have a direct and/or indirect effect on the child's learning process. OT benefits a child with autism and/or other developmental issues through the maintenance, improvement, and/or introduction of skills necessary for the child to participate as independently as possible in meaningful life activities at school, home and community. Such skills include:

• visual skills for reading and writing

• fine motor skills required for holding objects while handwriting or cutting with scissors

• sitting, posture, or perceptual skills, such as telling the differences between colors, shapes, and sizes

• daily living skills, such as toilet training, dressing, brushing teeth, and other grooming skills

• gross motor skills used for walking or riding a bike

• play, coping, self-help, problem solving, communication, and social skills

A total of 88 children were helped through OT in 2011. We hope to increase these numbers to 120 children as we have 200 children in our waiting-list.

Speech Therapy (ST)

MCDA can say that there are children without a voice - literally. They are not able

to speak at all, while children of the same age are talking a lot “like parrots”,

experimenting with new sounds and new words combinations all the time. These kids

are intelligent. They know what they want to say - but the words just will not come out. It

is frustrating and agonizing for them and their parents. Tens of thousands of children

around the world do not have a speech delay - they have a serious speech disorders. If

they do not receive intensive and proper therapy at a very young age - they may never

speak properly. The aim of ST in MCDA is to help these children in Macau.

A Speech Therapist performs a comprehensive evaluation and offers services of

language-based learning skills that helps identify strengths and weaknesses in the

following skills: Auditory comprehension, Expressive language ability, Phonemic

awareness (ability to process speech sounds), Current reading level (decoding and

comprehension), Processing of higher-level language (inferences, idioms, etc.),

Language formulation in writing, Spelling , Auditory and visual memory, Vocabulary

level , Word-finding abilities, among others.

A total of 35 children were helped through ST in 2011. We hope to increase these

numbers to 100 children as we have 150 children on our waiting-list.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)/ Discrete Trial Training (DTT)

The DTT and ABA is a teaching method that works on

behaviorally-based interventions, using visual, organization and

self-control strategies in a structured teaching environment, for

children with autism. They often face many deficits and

difficulties in learning (Romancyzk in Maurice, 1996). Discrete-

trial training can help to compensate these difficulties. ABA

works on: attention, motivation, communication, stimulus

control, generalization, cause-effect learning and observational

learning, perspective taking and understanding of social and behavioral expectations.

A session discrete trial is a single cycle of a behaviorally-based instruction routine. done

it , several times in succession, a few times a day, over a period days (or even longer)

until the skill is mastered.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Our special education teachers work

with children and youths who have a variety

and levels of developmental and learning

disabilities, such as Autism and Dyslexia.

Ranging from severe, moderate, mild, they

adapt the general education curriculum, have

knowledge in Pedagogy and are equipped to

create programs which meet the child’s

individual needs. Primarily teaching them life skills and basic literacy, instructing the

students at the elementary, middle and secondary school level, and inclusively work

with infants and toddlers.

ABA/DISCRETE TRIAL TRAINING

MCDA’s constant emotional support and counseling for the

parents, caregivers, and family members often reduces

feelings of frustration, remorse and helplessness.

Parents and family members undergo a normal psycho-

emotional process when faced with unexpected issues:

such as not having a typical child or discovering that the

child may have developmental issues.

Families need counseling in order to receive advice and

support to help them adjust and respond to the child's

difficulties, and overcome the issues that will affect their

entire family and their future.

MCDA believes parents, guardians and caregivers, play an

important role for the children’s success.

Inclusive Pilot Program at the School of the Nations (Early Intervention Classroom)

The Inclusive Pilot Program at the School of the Nations aimed to provide educational services that meet the diverse needs of the students, comprised of academic support, therapies and adaptive techniques for, but not limited to, children with developmental and learning difficulties (e.g. autism, dyslexia, speech, language or communication difficulties, etc.) that may hinder their academic progress, using English language as the medium of instruction. The program covered kindergarten education, following the Early Intervention Program.

The objectives of MCDA-SON’s Inclusive Pilot Program included: developing educational goals according to a child’s individual abilities while understanding that students do not need to have the same educational goals to learn together in regular classes. A small class of 6 children with sensory issues who cannot cope with regular class sizes, created an inclusive environment in ways that focused on students reaching their optimum potential, providing academic learning support that is adapted and patterned to SON’s existing curriculum, rendering the vital therapeutic services to the students to reach the goal of the inclusion such as OT, ST, Special

Education, and other related therapies, identifying the benefits of inclusive education for the whole school community: principal, teachers, staff, parents and mainstream students, training teachers about different ways of teaching and learning so that students with varying abilities and strengths can learn together, creating awareness in the school community about developmental and learning difficulties in children and providing assistance to parents and designing a Resource Classroom.

MCDA serves as a platform for university students particularly those who are in the field of psychology and education to interact, learn, experience and develop their skills in helping children with developmental disorders or learning difficulties. The programs that they participated in are Early Intervention and Formative Years Program. MCDA opened its doors for internship and practicum to continually help Macau young adults in their professional development and guide them in their future careers.

By raising awareness we embraced acceptance of our differences. We take one step closer to achieving MCDA’s goals. At this activity there were around 70 participants. We hope they helped spread the understanding of Autism.

MCDA had an Open Day where the OT Room was set up as a small cinema and social play activities. The children had a comfortable place to play and watch fun movies. There were several movie session, for the different age groups. In total 25 children participated from a local school and our association members. This activity was created to enhance acceptance among the children. Snacks and games were offered for the children throughout the activity. Informational pamphlets on Autism were distributed to raise awareness.

The occasion was very simple. MCDA gathered moms from the Early Intervention Program

for a 2-hour of sharing, playing and eating.

Moms shared their most memorable and heartfelt experiences with their children from the

day they first said “MOM” to the day they first walk to school.

MCDA fathers have the special place in our hearts. On June 19, 2011 we celebrated their day, with fun activities and games to share with their children and loved ones. We want to honor the fathers and appreciate their hard work on raising their children. MCDA is a family-oriented service.

MCDA is an association that advocates for the children’s rights, especially the rights of children with disabilities. Integration and acceptance in the community is a vital one, therefore we organized the activities such as the visit to the Macau Science Center where 60 children accompanied by 20 adults had an excellent educational day.

During the summer activities, MCDA continued to offer therapy, services and social activities with a twitch of FUN. We encourage children’s creativity, imagination and the joy of learning. About 80 children enjoyed a wonderful and meaningful summer. Activities provided included: English, Portuguese, Chinese classes; Arts & Crafts; Cooking, Pretend Plays among others.

80 Children and their families gathered with us at the Taipa Center on the 17th of December for a fantastic gift that MCDA managed to organize. They received donated bicycles from Hogan Lovells LLP.and very cute ginger bread man cookies donated from the Galaxy Macau. Children had a wonderful time playing, singing and the surprise visit from Santa. They enjoyed riding their new bicycles.

It is one of the most important and crucial services that MCDA provides to children, families and the community. Early Intervention Program is aimed at younger children that may have or probable to have developmental delays. It is a comprehensive, coordinated and multidisciplinary intervention that involves combinations of programs, therapies and activities. The sooner the child receives intervention, the greater the possibility of reaching his/hers potential. Early intervention can be remedial or preventive in nature--remediating existing developmental problems or preventing their occurrence.

It focuses on helping children with social integration in a school setting, coping with following instructions, environment modifications (coping with transitions at school), communication skills, and comprehension skills.

Without the financial subvention

especially when you need to give awareness of a social

Dynamic Presentation Skills workshop.

Due to her caring character, Valerie (OT) has attended training courses to acquire professional knowledge to cater the needs of the children. Teacher Training Course for Autistic Children Training Skills──held by Heep Hong Society (協康會 ) in Hong Kong “that covers:

MCDA received a visit from Hong Kong Pou Leung Kuk, 16 professionals from the area of Speech Therapist came. MCDA aims to form synergies with local and international institutions so we can make our scope of service larger and share information to meet the needs of all the children. Hoping and aiming that there won’t be a child without support. MCDA have programs for synergies. In addition, MCDA also trains volunteers from different universities and organizations.
