MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE 2013 ENTRY

The Master of Arts in Performance or Composition is the standard postgraduate programme for

performers with an undergraduate degree or a recognised equivalent (Composers will normally

be expected to take the MMus) The MA an award of the University of London focuses on

professional development it is designed to allow maximum flexibility for students to concentrate upon the range of

activities offered within their faculty and to develop their own performance initiatives

The MA is a practical course Final assessment is as follows

Principal Study ndash 75 (divided as shown below)

Final Recital or Composition Portfolio ndash 23 of Principal Study mark

Concerto Examination or Faculty equivalent ndash 13 of Principal Study mark

Professional Portfolio ndash 25

(This is a package of materials built around your Principal Study throughout the programme)

Principal Study

Each department has its own set of requirements that are designed to help students prepare for the profession

Please see the departmental pages on the website for further specific information and contact details In addition

to the final assessment requirements all students are involved in a wide range of faculty activities throughout the

programme including individual lessons chamber music ensembles orchestras performance classes

masterclasses and external projectscommissions

Professional Portfolio

The portfolio is designed to help you make the most of your time at the Academy by encouraging you to develop

your individual professional profile The portfolio will include a list of creative activities biographies curriculum

vitae and programme notes and commentaries on areas of development In addition students select a

professional development pathway from a wide range of options

Entry Requirements

The requirements for entry to the MA Programme are

bull A recognised Bachelor degree [or a recognised equivalent qualification] by 1st September before

enrolment to allow matriculation onto the programme (copies of documentation to be sent to the

Academy by mid-July 2013)

bull English Language at a minimum level of IELTS 60 or Pearson 58 (Academic Test) by 1st May before

enrolment

Academy That is because the preparation work can be completed in your own time without using Academy

resources The Academyrsquos library will not be available during the summer vacation

For standard enrolment you will need to bring your original matriculation documents and settle any outstanding

tuition fee balance in full with the Finance Department Also we must have received both your references your

completed HESA form and Enrolment form (these are provided in early summer) and (if applicable) a satisfactory

English Language test result You must bring your passport with photocopies of the passport cover and your

passport personal details page with photo if you are an international (non-EU) student you must also photocopy

your current visa (or UK identity card both sides) and every passport page with a UK immigration stamp or visa

All fully enrolled students will be issued with a Council Tax Exemption Letter before the end of September

remember that you must give the Registry your London term-time address

Please note that many Academy staff take their holidays during August so it may take some time to process any

requests for letters etc

Annual Tuition Fees

Tuition fees are published on wwwramacukfees 983137983150983140 the Academyrsquos Finance Department will send an invoice to

notify you of payment details

Credit Structure

The MA attracts a total of 180 credits as follows

bull Principal Study ndash 140 credits divided between

Individual lessons and studies ndash 80 credits Faculty Activity ndash 60 credits

bull Professional Portfolio ndash 40 credits

If you take the degree over two years you receive credits in the second year only however at the end of your first

year if you do not graduate or progress into year two you will be awarded credits (which for example could

enable you to transfer to another institution) according to the activities you have undertaken

Progression into the second year is dependent on passing an End-of-Year Performance Examination or End-of-

Year Composition Portfolio (passfail) an End-of-Year Professional Portfolio submission (passfail) and a Faculty

Activity Profile (passfail)
