Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts.

Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope,

but do it with gentleness and reverence,

keeping your conscience clear, so that when you are maligned,

those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame. 1 Peter 3:15-16

M y Dear Friends in Christ,

These words from our second reading are a great complement to the Gospel we

heard last week. There Jesus reminded us how close He seeks to be to us even and

especially when we are suffering. Jesus wants to be as close to us as He is with the

Father and seeks to be that closeness for us as well. This week, our readings remind

us that this love, this comfort, this closeness is given not only for us but as a founda-

tion for our discipleship. Because God loves each of us so much, because God seeks

to be so close to each of us, we are able and, indeed, responsible, to share the love we

have received.

Our second reading reminds us so beautifully that this is not “pie in the sky” theol-

ogy but is eminently practical. It gives us the reason for our hope and for our service

to others to help them share in that hope. And the call is to do it all with gentleness

toward the other, even with reverence for the presence of God in the other, even when

he or she thinks or acts differently. It’s not easy, especially in the face of derision,

mockery and persecution but Jesus makes it possible.

As we prepare for Pentecost and our celebration of the coming of God’s Spirit, it’s

important to remember the ways God is sharing that Spirit already. Our Confirmation

Candidates were on retreat this weekend, experiencing the love of God in a new and

radical way. Many of our young people made their First Communions. We have cele-

brated baptisms and weddings this Spring. Each of these celebrations are tangible

signs of the Presence of the Spirit. But’s that’s not all – there are so many other ways

God seeks to pour out the Spirit upon us to transform our lives. It is my hope in the

near future to be able to share the stories of some of these transformations. It is a

blessing to hear the witnesses and testimonies of others that remind us that we are

not alone on the journey. Stay tuned…

Please know of my special prayers for you and your families this past week. I wrote

this from the Jesuit Retreat Center in Wernersville, Pennsylvania. I was there on re-

treat, my first in many, many years. I’ve always been “too busy” to take the retreat that

the Church demands of Her priests – kept putting it off. This past year though, was a

difficult one for me and I realized how much I needed the time away dedicated solely

to prayer and to deepening my relationship with God. I realized how wise the Church

is in asking this of me and how essential this is if I am to be, first and foremost, a man

of prayer. My retreat is being led by Father Josh Laws who was with us two summers

ago. You may recall that he returned to Rome and completed his degree in spirituali-

ty. He is an excellent guide, walking me through the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignati-

us. A grace and a blessing to me in so many ways. I look forward to sharing some of

the fruits of this in the near future. Please continue to keep me in your prayers.

Peace,

“And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will

love him and reveal myself to him." Expand your married

love by exploring a WorldWide Marriage Encounter Week-

end on October 27-29, 2017 in Gaithersburg, MD. For more

SAYING GOODBYE TO KATY HYLTON,

OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR

Katy Hylton has accepted an offer by the

School of Music of the University of Maryland to fill one of the

two spots in their doctoral program for choral conducting. We

wish her well and know that she will excel in this endeavor. Katy

will be with us full time through June, and will continue to support

us as she is able while we seek to secure her successor. We will

miss Katy tremendously!

LOWER LEVEL UPDATE

Our renovation of the lower level is back on track and we hope to

begin the construction efforts in June to be ready to use the

space beginning in September. The plans have been re-

engineered and modified to be more functional and cost effective

and will now include necessary storage space.

ALPHA UPDATE

Fr. Rob, Terry Kirby, Karen Nelson, Caroline Rohr and 3 members

of our Alpha team were in London recently at an Alpha Leader-

ship conference paid for by a generous donor (spouses who at-

tended are paid for themselves). It was a great opportunity put on

by the people who created and still direct the Alpha program.

Together with other parishes and churches from the United States

and around the world, we learned how to build better on the

great foundation that Alpha provides a community. You can read

more about it here: http://alpha.org/events/lc17.

STAFF CHANGES

In an effort to make the best use of the combined staffs of Holy

Family and St. Francis-St. Mary and move forward with the evan-

gelization efforts that we have been challenged with by Archbish-

op Lori, the following changes in responsibilities have been made.

These changes will allow both parishes to operate more efficiently

and reduce duplication of efforts.

Ed Haynes, will oversee Grades K-6 faith formation at both par-

ishes and his office has been relocated to Holy Family. Caroline

Rohr will have responsibility for grades 7-8, TYM (grades 9-12)

and young adults. Liz Parrotte will focus on communications and

will continue her role as the screening coordinator. Rosie Burkey

will split her time between both parishes and will be responsible

for the presider schedule and support the Faith Formation office

administratively. Faye Williams will be relocated to Holy Family

and will assume responsibility for special projects. Jacob Brec-

zinski has come on board in the custodial area. In addition to

these changes, 3 volunteers have been added to the parish staff:

Kathy Hofer is working with the ministries and volunteers, Car-

olyn Kilonsky is overseeing the training of new leaders for Alpha

and also helping out in other areas as needed, and Laurel Swenc-

ki is overseeing Alpha.

As our staffs continue to merge, roles will continue to evolve and

change. Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we go

through this process and we will keep you updated as changes

occur. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Congratulations to those who received

their First Communion this weekend.

Half an Hour -- Once a Month

St. James in Boonsboro will have the monthly Taize prayer

service on Friday, May 26, at 7:00 pm. This quiet, meditative,

candlelit service, helps quiet distractions in our minds and

listen to the Holy Spirit. Sitting in the presence of Christ in

the Blessed Sacrament, we hear scripture from the coming

Sunday's Mass, then sing (or just listen to) a short, simple

song that repeats meditatively, and keep ourselves in silence.

Please call Barbara at 703-297-5571 with questions.
