Annual Meeting Enjoying the Buffet
Although Norma Petersendied on September 9th she sopositively influenced the lives ofcountless individu-als and countlessorganizations thather remarkable‘Work of Art’ liveson. Among theoriginal memberswho organizedSPMH, Normaprepared its Codeof Regulations andits 501(c3) filings. She was the fourthand longest serv-ing President ofSPMH (2002-2010). In 2010Karen McKim soeloquently spoke of Norma thather quote is repeated in tribute:
“She works tirelessly, and sheis available for meetings literallymorning, noon and night. Ask herfor a 7:30 a.m. meeting—no prob-lem. The same for any hour: andno day of the week is sacrosanct. She’ll meet with you on Saturday,Sunday, whatever. I’ve never seenanything like her! Norma reallyhasn’t a selfish bone in her body.
She is so personally generous, al-though when it comes to her non-profit organizations, she’s very
tight-fisted withtheir money. Shelikes to get asmuch donated aspossible for them—she’s a shrewdbusinesswoman. She has been withSchool for theCreative and Per-forming Arts sinceits beginnings inthe early ‘70s. Sheis very loyal to herpassions andSCPA, CSO andMusic Hall areamong her pas-
sions. She is motherly and gra-cious. She celebrates thecontributions of others, while shedenigrates her own. I am im-pressed by her commitment tocommunicating: she wants to keepeveryone informed. She pushes exofficio participation by all the artstenants of Music Hall, for example.Norma knows literally everyone byname. That’s a talent I envy!”

TOURS: "State# of the ProgramAt the time of writing this pro-
gram summary review we are morethan two-thirds of the way throughthe Beyond the Bricks Outreachcampaign, designed to bring to lifethe part of SPMH’s mission to edu-cate the public about Music Hall. The program was conceived be-cause of the building renovation, inhopes of keeping Music Hall in thepublic eye, and finds its place inthe resurgence of energy and inter-est in modern-day OTR neighbor-hood. Program accomplishmentsinclude:1. Created four new tour programproducts2. Increased number of tour guidesand quality of training. (Half ofguides are Certified Tourism Am-bassadors with the RegionalTourism Network, Cinti USA)3. Secured a company sponsor for
the outdoor building tour – Sym-phony Hotel donated $3,300 topurchase an outdoor voice amplifi-cation system to improve the guestexperience4. Developed community connec-tions to businesses, in tourism andother local tour programs
I. THE STRATEGY - Going Be-yond: Tours and Speakers andSchools
Building an identifiable, brandto which the community can relate, was one of the first priorities for
outreach. The Beyond the Brickslogo was created with volunteerinput and the design skills of ourpartner, Cincinnati Arts Association. It is the intention that outreach ef-forts will bring greater awarenessand support to SPMH, CAA andMusic Hall’s resident companies.Next was to determine what out-reach in the community looked like;a three prong approach was cre-ated:1. Beyond the Bricks: OutdoorBuilding Tour of Music Hall• Keeps the public engaged and in-terested in the building itself• Develops return visitors• Builds partnerships with localOTR businesses • Diversifies audience (for examplefamily fun)• Deepens and strengthens theMusic Hall story 2. Beyond the Bricks: Speaker Se-ries• Brings Music Hall to your work-place, conference, civic group ornursing home on a variety of re-lated topics. Examples include:– A Ladies’ Legacy: The WomenWho Mattered– Music Hall in Pictures: A VirtualTour– My O My: The Organs of MusicHall– Music Hall 360: Architecture ofMusic Hall3. Beyond the Bricks: In-school
11 MUSIC HALL Marks
Program• Designed to address CommonCore standards, this entertaining,hands-on, Music Hall curriculumhelps children learn as they fall inlove with the building before step-ping one foot in it
II. VOLUNTEERSIt cannot be overstated that
the importance of volunteer en-gagement with consistent, high-level contributions are themost essential elements tothis program’s success asvolunteers provide the pas-sion and commitment thatsustain the program. In ad-dition, their preparedness torepresent SPMH with cour-tesy, professionalism, knowl-edge and warmth is our onlydeliverable that matterswhen they are serving asthe “face” of the organiza-tion to all visitors.
Retention of volunteersremains high since volun-teers are engaged and com-mitted to SPMH, Music Hall, and the program’s vision forfurther growth and develop-ment. Regular team meet-ings, on-going training anddevelopment, celebration ofsuccesses, project/contentdevelopment committees, and regular communicationslike progress reports andother information affectingMusic Hall and the program, have ensured volunteers are
informed and optimistic about theprogram’s future.
A major improvement in capacity, efficiency and consumerexperience is the adoption of aticketing system through CincinnatiArts Association box office. Also, the addition of a private, volunteeremail account allows turn-key ac-cess and control for volunteers re-garding tour guests.

Volunteers Make It HappenThose who give their time to
educate the public about the his-tory of Music Hall are among themost dedicated, passionate, andenthusiastic people I have evermet. They research, plan, and en-tertain, representing Music Hall andSPMH with outstanding profession-alism. The program’s accomplish-ments are the result of their efforts.I recently spoke to three guides,Judy Martin, Harry Kegley andSteve Carlson to discover whatgets them excited about SPMHMusic Hall “Beyond the Bricks”Outreach Program.
(Judy Martin, a former violistwith the CSO, has a unique view-point from her position on thestage; Harry Kegley is a retiredteacher, who loves to spark curios-ity in others and Steve Carlson de-scribes himself as a goodsalesman who loves to tell a greatstory. Music Hall has a trove ofgreat stories.)
You are not historians, sowhy do you volunteer for a Na-tional Historic Landmark?
JM: When I was with the CSO,I sometimes did behind the scenespeeks; I loved seeing people lightup when their interest is piqued bysome new information or insight.
HK: I volunteer because it ex-presses my passion for the artsand Music Hall. I want to share itwith people.
SC: My high school Junior andSenior proms were in the ballroomand my graduation was on theMusic Hall stage. I attended POPSconcert for years. Once you learnthe history you think, “This is cool”.I feel it is really important to givesomething back - and it’s a storyworth telling.
What do you like the most? JM: I would say, having people
share our interest and delight in thestories that make Music Hall cometo life. They bring different thingsand you learn from them. Fellowvolunteers are interesting and en-joyable people.
HK: I completely agree-thepeople. My fellow guides have awide range of interests and profes-sions. They are dedicated and ap-preciative of each other and workwell as a group. You meet peoplefrom all over the world on tours too, like China, Croatia and all over theUS.
SC: In the past, I came toevents. I appreciated it, but know-ing the history has deepened myappreciation. I would also add thatwhen you give, you get; you getsomething back from the people onthe tours.
This is such a historic time. What is that like?
JM: Well, it makes me appreci-ate the 140 years of vision, dedica-tion, and labor that went into
(front row) Ron Hoffman, Barbara Gomes, Gayley Hautzenroeder, Judy Martin, Harry Kegley, Ramona Toussaint; (back row) Steve Carlson, Thea Tjepkema, Fred Warren, Carol Kruze,
SusanWestrick, Cliff Goosmann
creating our magnificent MH andseeing it through its various up-dates, remodeling, and renova-tions.
SC: So true, I suppose whenthey renovated Music Hall in 1896or 1969 they thought – that is it.But technology today will allow thisplace to be a crown jewel ofCincinnati for the next 100 years, Iam sure. The photos of changesince 1878 are incredible. There’sjust so much positive happeninghere.
HK: I feel the same way asJudy and Steve. I just know I amgoing to be in awe when I give thatfirst tour.
What do you see for the fu-ture of the program?
JM: The future is just “Wow”! Iam looking forward to showingpeople all the changes. It is goingto be fun!
HK: This is the beginning of anew era. The program explodedinto an exciting and vibrant en-deavor; one which makes meproud to be a part of.
SC: Under the current sup-port and leadership we have beenable to tell a better story. Westarted out as random group with-out formal structure. Then we satdown together; it’s pretty exciting.

For several decades, thou-sands of patrons have passed theSouth Hall sculp-tures. ‘Tragedy andComedy’, gifts ofDr. William C.Wachs, in memoryof Maestro ThomasSchippers, wereoriginally installedin the historic Na-tional Theater onSycamore between3rd and 4thStreets. The Na-tional, built by JohnBates in 1837, wasconsidered a mar-vel of architecture. For over 25 years itgave Cincinnati dis-tinction in the the-ater worldalongside NewYork and Boston. In addition to na-tional and international actors andactresses in tragedy and comedy, there were many distinguishedlyric artists. Jennie Lind made herCincinnati debut performance at
the National. In 1884, the buildingwas sold, eventually converted to
a tobacco warehouse and was de-molished in 1940. As the sculp-tures are not original to Music Hall, they are now considered surplusartifacts to be relegated to anothervenue.
