Time Walk8 septembre - 6 octobre 2018

Matt Jones vit et travaille à New York. Il a récemment exposé à Freight and Volume, The Hole, Bleecker Street Art Club, Driscoll Babcock, Robert Miller Gallery, the Richard Massey Foundation, et Tibet House à New York, Geoffrey Young Gallery,Great Barrington, Anonymous Gallery, Mexique, et Horton Gallery à Berlin.

Time WalkSeptember 8 - October 6, 2018

Opening Sept. 7, 2018 from 6 to 9 pm

The Galerie Jérôme Pauchant is thrilled to present Time Walk, the second solo exhibition of Matt Jones.

Time Walk presents a series of paintings that take up the freedom and the exaggeration of Mannerism, and the decadence and pageantry of Rococo. Jones looks to the decay and regeneration of contemporary geo-political landscapes in an exhibition that moves asynchronously through time.

After a residency in Udine and Venice, Italy (funded by a grant from the Kossak Painting Program at Hunter College), and Paris, France, (organized by Galerie Jérôme Pauchant) Jones’ newest body of work references Giambattista Tiepolo, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, the Hudson River School painters, and the digital environments of fantasy Role Playing Games.

The layered pictorial surfaces of these new paintings generate a multivalent topology that refuses traditional, linear historical narratives in order to explore the possibility of simultaneous alternative realities. Guided as much by history as by affect, Time Walk foregrounds the agency of the viewer as an active participant in the narrative of the paintings’ significations.

Matt Jones lives and works in New York. He received his BFA from Cooper Union and is an MFA candidate at Hunter College. He has recently exhibited at Freight and Volume, The Hole, Bleecker Street Art Club, Driscoll Babcock, Robert Miller Gallery, The Richard Massey Foundation, and Tibet House in New York, Geoffrey Young Gallery, Great Barrington, Anonymous Gallery, Mexico City, and Horton Gallery, Berlin.

Matt JONES (1980)

Matt Jones (b 1980) lives and works in New York. He received a BFA from Cooper Union (2002), the Yale Norfolk Summer School of Painting (2001), and is an MFA candidate at Hunter College (2019). Jones is the recipient of the Kossak Travel Grant (2018) and the Ellen Battell StoeckelGrant (2001). He has lived and worked in Paris for four consecutive summers thanks to the generosity and support of Galerie Jérôme Pauchant.Jones has previously exhibited works based on his research of theoretical physics, many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics (Planetary and Ghosts), mediation (Innerspace), art history (Ghosts and Enchantments), the everyday (Enchantments), virtual worlds (Enchantments and Planetary), and material-based abstraction (Ghosts, Innerspace, and Planetary). Currently, Jones is particularly interested in studying Rococo painting (GB Tiepolo, Fragonard, Watteau, and Boucher specifically) as he sees historical, cultural, economic, and political links between the 18th century and present day. In his current Fauvism-style paintings, Jones weaves Rococo imagery, atmospheres, and metaphors into images from contemporary life including stills from fantasy role playing games, important people in his life, with particular attention paid to nature and trees.

Jones has had solo and duo shows at Galerie Jerome Pauchant (Paris) who represents his work in France and has exhibited with Freight + Volume Gallery (New York), Horton Gallery (Berlin), Castor Gallery (New York), The Richard Massey Foundation (New York), Bleecker Street Art Club (New York), and Buia Gallery (New York). He has participated in NADA Miami (The Hole, New York), Spring Break Art Fair (Old School, Brooklyn), Miami Project (Driscoll Babcock, New York) and a solo presentation at Art Brussels (Bodson Gallery, Brussels). His work has been displayed in group shows at Robert Miller (New York), Anonymous (Mexico City), Driscoll Babcock Gallery (New York), ADA Gallery (Richmond, VA), Dorfman Projects (New York), Tibet House (New York), The Varsity (Brooklyn), Galleri Geo (Bergan, Norway), Grey East (East Hampton, NY), The Artbridge Drawing Room (New York), Gildar Gallery (Beverly Hills, CA), Fiebach Minninger (Cologne), Exit Art (New York), and The Hole (New York). He has done performances with Anonymous (Mexico City), Artist Space (New York), and Creative Time (New York).

Il a également exposé à Freight + Volume Gallery (New York), Horton Gallery (Berlin), Castor Gallery (New York), The Richard Massey Foundation (New York), Bleecker Street Art Club (New York), Buia Gallery (New York). Il a participé au NADA Miami (The Hole, New York), Spring Break Art Fair (Old School, Brooklyn), Miami Project (Driscoll Babcock, New York), à Art Brussels (Bodson Gallery, Bruxelles). Son travail a été montré dans des expositions collectives à la Robert Miller Gallery (New York), Anonymous (Mexique), Driscoll Babcock Gallery (New York), ADA Gallery (Richmond, VA), Dorfman Projects (New York), Tibet House (New York), The Varsity (Brooklyn), Galleri Geo (Bergan, Norway), Grey East (East Hampton, NY), The Artbridge Drawing Room (New York), Gildar Gallery (Beverly Hills, CA), Fiebach Minninger (Cologne), Exit Art (New York), et The Hole (New York). Il a aussi réalisé des performances chez Anonymous (Mexique), Artist Space (New York), et Creative Time (New York).
