BIRDS OF A FEATHERDuring the past several summers I have stayed on and off

for months in my daughter’s place in Bangalore and havemarvelled at how people function in that city.

The weather there makes me so perennially drowsy thatmy main occupation there, other than reading, has beennapping before, after and sometimes between meals! I usedto wonder how children ever went to school there as early as7 am when all I wanted at that hour was to snuggle deeperinto the king-sized quilt, which I lovingly called ‘airport’ as itwas so vast!

But the beauty of Bangalore other than its climate is itsmassive trees which, though fewer than years ago, still giveit a green cover that blossoms into flowers in summer, attracting humans and birds alike. Its traffic jams are thestuff of legends and people there are easy to please as smallthings like finding a parking slot without contest is seen asa miracle.

Grand-nephew Anand arrived at my daughter’s home inWhitefield one evening with his parents to see the octogenar-ian grand-uncle from Chennai. After dropping his parents atthe main gate, he circled the house in his gleaming Hyundaicar, in pursuit of a parking slot.

He hit the jackpot by finding ample parking space undera grand tree right next to the house. Unable to believe hisluck, shaking his head in disbelief, he walked into the houseafter parking his maroon beauty there. The guests lingeredfor a couple of hours during which tea and snacks made theirappearance. Of course, there was the friendly rivalry be-tween my daughter and son-in-law as to who made thebetter tea using the very same ingredients. Soon it was timefor the guests to leave and, as they came out, Anand wentaround to get his car.

The next we heard was a startled shriek. Soon thereafter, the engine started and he drove around to the front of thehouse to pick up his waiting parents. We all stood still infascination as the once maroon car he brought to a halt hada pure white pate now and what looked like white floraldecorations. A few thousand migratory birds who had claimedthat tall tree for their own had let loose a rain of droppingsand slathered the car with a professional coat of white paint!Anand got out of the car fuming....”No wonder I got a parkingslot so easily in this city! What birds are these? By God, theyseem to have loose motions, every last one of them”!!

After a careful water hosing and rubbing down of the nowsmelly car, the bugged guests left and, if their curses wereanything to go by, these visiting birds will soon be extinct!!

My takeaway from this amusing incident was that weneed to edit the saying ‘birds of a feather flock together’...they crap together too!!

Tamil Cinema & Music 52MKT’s popularity continued to rise in Tamil Theatre and he

emerged as a box-office draw. Most stage artistes of the periodbelonged to one of the many Boys’ Companies. However,Bhagavathar did not. He was so popular and sought after thathe freelanced, getting a fancy fee each time; he acted in ‘specialdramas’.

(A ‘special drama’ was not staged by any particular troupe, but organized by a ‘drama contractor’ who brought variousartistes together and staged a play for profit.)

Most top stage artistes of those days who could command afan following of their own preferred to appear in such ‘specialdramas’ for the high remuneration they received and thefreedom from the rigid discipline and all-male atmosphere ofBoys’ Companies.

Heroines who played opposite Thyagaraja Bhagavathar inthose days had to be changed often because most stageactresses paled into insignificance before Bhagavathar. Hewas a great scene-stealer who delighted in one-upmanship, thefavourite pastime of most stage artistes of his time. The onlyactress who stood up to him and often paid him back in his owncoin was S. D. Subbulakshmi.

Their onstage battle of wits and repartee - not found in thescript - paved the way for their success. In places like Jaffna(in Sri Lanka) many fans placed heavy bets among them-selves on who would win the game of repartee that night!

(S.D. Subbulakshmi spoke during early 1980s on audiocassette tape to this writer for three long days about her lifeon stage and screen.)

Their most successful play was ‘Pavalakodi’, a romanceabout the hero of the Mahabharata, Arjuna. Al. Rm. AlagappaChettiar made it into a film at Meenakshi Cinetone in Adayararea in 1934. It was in this successful film that ThyagarajaBhagavathar made his cinematic bow. So did S. D.Subbulakshmi.

It also marked the directorial debut of the sadly neglectedIndian film pioneer lawyer-turned-filmmaker, K.Subramanyam The making of this successful movie has someinteresting sidelights .…

One of the partners felt disappointed by the treatmentmeted to him by the seniors and thought of a novel plan toregister his protest. The studio did not have a compound walland he would park his car on the adjoining road. As soon asshooting began and K. Subramanyam shouted ‘Action!’, hewould start honking the car’s bulb-horn with glee to glory! Theharsh sounds would spoil the ‘take’ and the shot had to be takenagain. Again he would begin his honking! The only way he couldbe silenced was to buy his share in the partnership on his termsand that is what AL. RM and his colleagues did!

The studio floor had no ceiling and shooting had to be done, courtesy, Sun God! That was the period there were no electricallights in use in the few studios of Madras.

The other interesting sidelight was ‘the crow -shooter,’ animportant member of the technical crew. Adayar was then amuch-wooded country and the studio had many tall age-oldtrees where crows gathered in large numbers. The left-overfood and such carelessly thrown away by the actors and crewand others at work attracted the crows and their happy andvociferous cawing disturbed the shooting. The crow-shooter,armed with an air-gun, would shoot in the air twice or thricescaring the crows off the trees and, as soon as the birds flewaway, the camera would roll! As shooting was done undersunlight there were no fixed time slots for breakfast, lunch, teaand all that.

Whenever clouds hid the Sun all would rush to eat and whenthe Sun re-appeared all would rush back leaving the half-eatenfood behind! Stars, small fry, the crew and bosses and guestsand all the king’s men and women ate the same food. There wasno special and preferential food for a chosen few, as is thefashion today. (More later)

Pavements converted into privategardens

Sir, Encroachment of pavements by com-mercial establishments, roadside vendors andparked vehicles is common. But in a numberof streets in the neighbourhood, even residentshave permanently encroached on the pave-ment outside their houses by converting it intofenced private gardens. Corporation officialsare not taking any action against such perma-nent encroachment. R. Rangabashyam,Veerasamy Street, off Arya Gowda Road,West Mambalam

Safeguard life, don’t install mobile towers atop apartment complexesSir, Quite recently, while disposing of the

petition filed by one Harish Chand Tiwari ofGwalior, who had sought removal of a mobiletower in a house close to his work place, theSupreme Court, after going through the meritsof the case, directed the service provider to de-activate the said tower immediately.

The petitioner had alleged that the electro-magnetic radiation from the towers had causedhim cancer,

In T. Nagar and elsewhere, mobile towershave been erected atop residential complexesand commercial buildings.

Though the building owners and service pro-viders must have got the due approval forerecting the towers, I wonder how many own-ers know about the ill effects of the radiation

from the towers, or does the attraction of therental income override such considerations.

In a recent case, following a complaint by aresident about mobile connectivity problemsin his house, the service provider suggestedinstalling a tower on the terrace of the apart-ment complex he lives in. The resident thentook up the issue with the other residents andalso told them of the amount they were beingoffered as monthly rent. But the well-informedresidents rejected the suggestion.

Though the service providers may gloss overthe issue of the radiation effects by citinginstallation of countless towers, health issuesdo surface and the Apex Court order is clinch-ing evidence. So, dear folks, be aware andbeware! K. Harihar, T. Nagar

Shops should close once a week to facilitate civic worksSir, This refers to the report in Mambalam

Times (April 22-28 issue), which stated thatMetrowater contract workers, who were dig-ging a trench to replace a water pipe in BarodaStreet Extension, West Mambalam duringday time, were asked to stop work by the trafficpolice and attend to the same only during nightto avoid traffic congestion at the junction.

But civic works that do not cause any trafficissues or other hurdles to the public can be doneduring day time. Sometimes night work cancause disturbance to the residents and may

not measure up to the same done in daylight. It is for this reason that all shops and com-

mercial establishments should close for a dayin a week to carry out such work. This willenable the civic department to better plan andexecute the work. Above all, the hapless andharried residents can heave a sigh of relief asa tranquil atmosphere will prevail. In thesmart city project for T. Nagar, the authoritiesmust take this point into account. T. NagarResidents’ Welfare Association, 30,Rangan Street, T. Nagar

Let us make Tamilnadu a corruption-free StateSir, According to a study conducted by the

NGO ‘Centre for Media Studies’, Tamilnadu isin third place among the most corrupt Statesin the country.

It is incorrect to blame only the bribe re-ceiver; the bribe giver is also equally respon-sible and deserves to be punished under thelaw.

Why does one pay bribe to govt. staff? Eitherhe is unable to wait, wants preferential treat-ment or does not want to follow the rules. Whenone is ready to pay the bribe to get things done, then such a person does not have any locusstandi to complain.

I have interacted several times with govt.departments like TNEB, Tahsiladar office,Metrowater and others for availing their ser-

vices. I have always followed the correct pro-cedure and paid only the official charges toobtain the services and, in spite of being askedfor bribe for preferential treatment or other-wise, have never fallen into that trap. I havefrom experience learnt that if one is firm andpatient, the system is strong enough to dis-charge the services in the normal course oftime.

If at all there is a situation wherein theofficial does not budge and keeps demandingbribe, such issues should be handled throughthe Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corrup-tion, or through the media. So, let all denizenstake a resolve never to pay bribe and makeTamilnadu a corruption-free state. K. Harihar,T. Nagar
