We often hear that our patients want to receive quality health care as close to home as possible…and we’ve been listening! With help from our generous donors, we are able to meet our goal of providing sophisticated technology and services locally, saving patients the time and expense of travel.
During 2009, Avera Queen of Peace was blessed to receive a $2 million grant from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, part of a $13.5 million grant designated for Avera. To learn more about this grant and what it means to Mitchell and the region, please turn to page 3.
Avera Queen of Peace has also experienced an increase in our Leaders Program this year. This program provides several affordable options so that friends and patrons can make a significant gift to Avera Queen of Peace to support our programs and services. Interestingly, a number of our employees have joined the Leaders Program. It’s very humbling that members of our staff have chosen to support our health care ministry through the Leaders Program.
In addition to grants and endowments, the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation sponsors a number of local fundraisers,
and we are so grateful for the community’s support which allows us to invest in some of the latest medical advances. Participation in “a Splash of Spirits,” the “Caring for Kids” Golf Tournament, or the Avera Queen of Peace Walleye Classic help pay for things like cancer screenings and cancer care, living accommodations for family members while loved ones receive care at the hospital, pediatric services, and much, much more…wherever the need is greatest! We are fortunate to enjoy the support of our community!
Our donors, board members, community members and staff have expressed great confidence in Avera Queen of Peace, and I assure you we will continue to work hard in order to deserve that confidence. As you look through the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation Annual Report, you will see what a difference a donation, however big or small, makes when it comes to local health care. Thank you for your support.

New cancer treatments and equipment are now available to patients in the Mitchell area thanks to a $2-million gift that transforms rural health care delivery. The grant was awarded to Avera by the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.
The grant creates greater access to sophisticated cancer services in the 19-county Avera Queen of Peace region. Brachytherapy is one of two new medical technologies that has been brought to the Avera Queen of Peace area because of the $2-million grant. Brachytherapy is a cancer treatment that can provide both low and high doses of radiation internally. This means treatment sometimes can be reduced from several weeks using other radiation to just five days using Brachytherapy.
“The advantages of Brachytherapy are shorter treatment times and fewer side effects because the radiation is targeted to more specific areas,” says Thomas P. Rasmusson, president and CEO of Avera Queen of Peace Health Services.
In addition to Brachytherapy, the grant funded replacement of analog mammography equipment with digital mammography. Digital mammograms create clearer images and are more effective in detecting abnormalities in the breast. Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer treated at Avera Queen of Peace.
“The grant funded the purchase of digital mammography equipment so that patients in Davison County and surrounding counties now have access to the latest breast cancer detection technology,” remarks Rasmusson. “We are extremely grateful to be selected to receive funding that will increase the availability of highly technical cancer detection and treatment technology right here in Mitchell.”
Avera announces the grant from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust during a 2009 press conference. From left: Dr. Donald Kosiak, Avera eCARE medical director; Dr. David Erickson, Avera senior vice president and chief medical officer; Walter Panzirer, trustee of the Leona M. and Harry B. Grant of $2 Million Benefits Cancer Patients
New Advances in Cancer Care and Detection Come to Mitchell
One of the reasons Avera Queen of Peace was selected for the grant was the medical center’s dedication to providing high-quality care locally.
“One of the trustees of the Charitable Trust received medical treatment at Avera Queen of Peace and was impressed by the high quality of that care, as well as Avera’s commitment to keeping quality medicine as near to home as possible for patients,” says Geri Beck, director of the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation.
New Technology Now Available at Avera Queen of Peacedue to a $2-million grant given to Avera Queen of Peace in 2009 by the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, the following new treatments and equipment are now available at Avera Queen of Peace.
Brachytherapy: This cancer treatment can provide either low- or high-dose internal radiation. Treatment, which involves implanting radioactive seeds at a cancerous site for low-dose treatment and delivering radiation through an implanted catheter for high-dose treatment, is highly effective on certain cancers. Treatment can be as little as five days, while other radiation treatments can last as long as two months.
Digital Mammography: Avera Queen of Peace has transitioned from analog to digital mammography equipment. Digital mammography has many benefits including decreased exposure to radiation, with clearer images and greater contrast.

In 2000, Paula’s home was damaged by a microburst. “When I received money from the Employee Emergency Assistance Fund, it was really humbling and I was very thankful,” said Paula. “I give because I like to give and I know other employees may need the funding more than I did.”
Paula is one of 274 Avera Queen of Peace employees who participated in the “Employees Giving from the Heart” campaign. In 2009, employees donated $22,431 to the campaign, which raises money for the Employee Emergency Assistance Fund, the Cancer Care Fund, the Caring for Life Fund, the Hospitality House and the Comforts of Home Fund at Avera Brady.
“The fact that our employees continue to give at previous levels, in spite of the uncertainty in our economic climate, is a great indication of our employees’ support and commitment to Avera Queen of Peace,” says Geri Beck, Foundation director.

Center. The family of Josiah Sweatt stayed at the Avera Queen of Peace Hospitality House after he was hurt in a car accident.
“Our entire family was so touched by your use of a room in the lovely home owned by the Foundation,” says Jo Sweatt, Josiah’s grandmother. “Our outcome has been excellent and Josiah, his two sisters and mother are all doing very well.”
Funds from this year’s tournament paid for the Hospitality House’s new roof, which cost more than $16,000.

Early detection is key to cancer treatment and survival. Because of gifts made to the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation, 200 men received free prostate cancer screenings and 75 women received free breast cancer screenings in 2009.
The free screenings in 2009, which were paid for through the Char Greenway Memorial Fund, took place at Cabela’s for the men and Avera Women’s Diagnostics and the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center for the women. Of the people screened, 12 needed additional follow-up, which could lead to life-saving treatment.
“Eight of the men had elevated PSA results in their blood tests, which can be an indicator of prostate cancer. Those men were advised to make an appointment with their physician as soon as possible,” says Laurie Robey, MT, (ASCP), director of the Avera Queen of Peace Laboratory.
Four of the women needed ultrasounds and one needed to return in six months for additional follow-up, says Laurie Moody, mammography coordinator.
Besides free screenings, Avera Queen of Peace Foundation sponsors several fundraisers and programs aimed at educating people about the importance
Fundraisers Support Cancer Screeningsof routine cancer screenings. A fundraiser called “a Splash of Spirits,” raised nearly $27,000 while the Char Greenway Memorial Bowling Tournament raised $14,835 in 2009. The bowling tournament has raised nearly $61,000 in five years.

Do you want to contribute to the future of quality health care in the Mitchell area, but you’re not sure that the amount you are able to donate will make a lasting difference? Consider the Leaders Program, which offers several affordable ways to give an enduring gift to Avera Queen of Peace.
The Leaders Program began in the early 1990s as a way for supporters of Avera Queen of Peace to make a gift that would affect the future of health care in the community. The gifts support programs and services at Avera Queen of Peace, including Pediatrics, Hospice, Cancer Screenings, Hospitality House, Avera Brady Health and Rehab and more.
Showing their commitment to Avera’s mission, several Avera Queen of Peace employees have joined the Leaders Program. Employees who are part of the program have $23 deducted per pay period, which makes joining the program very affordable.
“I appreciate so many things about working for Avera including our CARE principles and the fact that we begin our meetings with prayer. My husband Bryan and I decided to join the Leaders Program because we wanted to show our support for Avera,” says Cindi Dixon, clinic manager at Avera Pediatrics Plus. “The Leaders Program will allow us to make a significant gift to Pediatrics, but do it in an affordable way over a period of time.”
There are three ways to join the Leaders Program:
nMake a gift of $10,000 over 10 years funded by annual or monthly payments, a gift of stock or appreciated property
nEstablish a life-income arrangement such as a tax-deductible annuity
nEstablish an endowment funded by a $25,000 life insurance policy with Avera Queen of Peace as owner and beneficiary
Since the program’s inception, Avera Queen of Peace has received 23 gifts that total $650,000 in deferred gifts and two gifts totaling $20,000 in annual pledges. Most gifts are in the form of an endowment funded by life insurance, and most members have chosen to pay $600 per year for seven years to fully fund the premiums.
Annual premiums for the Leaders Program are fully tax-deductible, and when the insured passes away, the funds are endowed and designated to the Foundation fund of the donor’s choice. Leaders Program Endowments are never spent —only the annual interest earnings are used.
To learn more about the Leaders Program, call Geri Beck at (605) 995-5773

New Suite Brings Comfort to Patients’ Last Days
The Comfort Suite, two adjoining rooms located on the second floor of the hospital, provides one room for a patient in the final stage of life and one room to accommodate the patient’s family.
“It was important for us to designate a space for patients to receive comfort care from physicians and nurses while being able to spend their last days with their families,” says Rochelle Reider, vice president of patient services.
Donations to the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation provided for remodeling and decorating of the suite. The family room includes comfortable furnishings, refrigerator, coffee pot and other amenities. The Comfort Suite is available to patients at Avera Queen of Peace.

Recognition List, continued
Nearly half of the funds spent by the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation were in the form of direct assistance to others including free cancer screenings, charity care and employee assistance grants.
More than a quarter of the funds spent went to construction and furnishings including a new roof for the Hospitality House, new rocking chairs for the Maternal Care Center and a new Comfort Suite for Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. The balance of funds spent went to equipment, supplies and education.
“We’ve seen an uptick in requests for Foundation funds in the past year as the economy has taken a turn for the worse. It’s particularly gratifying to see donated funds put to a good use, especially in the form of assistance to others,” says Geri Beck, Avera Queen of Peace Foundation director.
Giving to others is the goal of health care fund raising, says Greg Dice, chairperson of the Foundation Board. “Our generous donors want to see their gifts making a difference in peoples’ lives,” he says.

If you’re looking through our Annual Report, it likely means that you’re someone who has supported the efforts of the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation in 2009. Thank you!
We hope you enjoy looking through this first-ever annual report. Without your support and generosity, we wouldn’t have been able to provide free cancer screenings, put a new roof on the Hospitality House or implement technology that transmits a cardiac patient’s EKG reading to our Emergency Department prior to arrival by ambulance.
As our economy struggles, more requests are being made for Foundation funds. Being able to fund those requests is gratifying for us and hopefully for you as well! Your generous gift is being put to good use and is making a difference!
To contact the Foundation, call (605) 995-5773 or e-mail Geri Beck, Foundation director at [email protected].

A Message from the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation director
Modem Transfers Vital Signs From Ambulance to Hospital
Your donations have allowed a collaborative effort between Mitchell Regional Ambulance and Avera Queen of Peace Hospital to establish a new life-saving technology referred to as STEMi. The American Heart Association estimates that nearly 400,000 people in the u.S. experience STEMi every year, which is a dangerous form of heart attack.
The hospital has purchased a wireless modem for a heart defibrillator that transmits a patient’s electrocardiogram (EKG) readings to the hospital while an ambulance is en route. This allows the hospital’s Emergency Department to monitor the patient’s heartbeat and to begin preparing for the patient’s arrival. Additionally, EKG readings can be transmitted to the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., for further evaluation and recommendation.
Avera Queen of Peace Hospital and the Mitchell Regional Ambulance are only the second community in the state to establish this system; the service is also available in Sioux Falls. Funds for the purchase of the
defibrillator and the wireless modem were provided by the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation Emergency Services Fund.
