California’s water crisis. Entrants were provided with the following introduction, “We need to
take action now before a water catastrophe happens. Because of these problems we need to make
some simple and not so simple changes. We need to build new water systems and find new ways to
produce new water. That is why, as your Governor, I am asking the California State Legislature to
pass a new water package called the [fill in the blank] Act/Law. This law will …”
More than 200 students entered the contest from which 15 finalists were selected to present

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORERS INCLUDING ALEXANDRA COUSTEAU FEATURED PRESENTERS AT WATER EDUCATION FESTIVAL FOR O.C. SCHOOLS Disneyland Resort is Presenting Sponsor of Two-Day Festival for Orange County 4th-6th Graders
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. – (Feb. 22, 2011) The Orange County Water District (OCWD)
Groundwater Guardian Team announced today that three internationally recognized experts on the
environment will be featured presenters at the 15th annual Children’s Water Education Festival,
March 23-24, 2011, at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum in Yorba Linda.
National Geographic Emerging Explorer Alexandra Cousteau, granddaughter of Jacques-
Yves Cousteau and Founder and President of Blue Legacy International, will share her passion for
the environment and vision for managing our water resources sustainably in order to preserve a
healthy planet. National Geographic Emerging Explorer Kenny Broad, Ph.D., cave diver and
environmental anthropologist, will share the importance of a healthy ocean and groundwater
supply, and introduce the students to the element of exploration and discovery. Joel Sartore,
renowned photographer for National Geographic, will share his extraordinary wildlife
photography and experiences while capturing the indelible images that have graced National
Geographic. (NOTE: Bios for all three are attached)
The Festival, which is the largest of its kind in the nation, educates thousands of Orange
County’s fourth, fifth and sixth grade students and teachers each year about water and the
environment. As an example, Dr. Broad will take the students on a wild visual ride beneath their
feet into one of the world's most beautiful and dangerous realms of underwater caves.
“If we exclude fresh water that is locked up in the form of ice, about 95 percent of the
earth’s fresh water is contained in underground aquifers,” said Broad. “These aquifers often are
associated with unique underwater cave systems that not only hold our drinking water, but are
home to rare species of life, including microbes that can shed light on the earth’s evolution and
can provide clues for developing life-saving chemical compounds.”

WATER EDUCATION FESTIVAL WELCOMES INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS ADD 1-1-1
Dr. Broad added that groundwater extraction for industrial, agricultural and human
consumptive uses, pollution and salt water intrusion associated with sea level rise are all
threatening to wipe out an ecosystem that we know very little about. “One of the reasons we know
so little is because of the difficulty in exploring these hidden realms,” he said.
Presented by the Orange County Water District, Disneyland Resort, the National Water
Research Institute, the Municipal Water District of Orange County and the Orange County Water
District Groundwater Guardian Team, the mission of the Festival is to educate students and
teachers about water-related and conservation issues that correspond to California Science
Standards. The Festival teaches youth to think “blue” and make a difference in protecting our
water resources for today, tomorrow and for future generations.
“The event is more than an opportunity to educate students about protecting and preserving
our environment, groundwater and drinking water resources,” said Frank Dela Vara, Director,
Environmental Affairs and Conservation for the Disneyland Resort, a Festival sponsor for 14
years. “It is a chance to plant seeds of knowledge that will help empower our youth to make a
difference.”
The Children’s Water Education Festival is provided at no cost to schools, making public
and private financial support crucial to the success of this educational event and its continued
growth. While the event is free, many schools are unable to attend because of transportation costs.
An easy way for individuals and organizations in the community to support their neighborhood
school is to help underwrite transportation costs, which generally runs $300 to $500 per bus.
Contributions are tax deductible.
Conducting a Festival of this size requires more than 600 volunteers, staff and presenters,
as well as in-kind and monetary donations. To sponsor, contact Gina DePinto at (714) 378-3228 or
[email protected]. To volunteer, contact Amanda Gavin at (714) 378-3202 or
[email protected]. For information, go to www.ocwd.com or to www.childrenwaterfestival.com.

ALEXANDRA COUSTEAU
National Geographic Emerging Explorer Alexandra Cousteau is part of one of the world's
most famous environmental dynasties. She is grand‐daughter of legend Jacques‐Yves Cousteau
who first started teaching her to dive at the age of seven. She left on her first expedition with
her father Philippe and mother Jan to Easter Island, Chile when she was just 4 months old.
Today, she takes that rich legacy of environmental advocacy, exploration and
storytelling and moves it forward with Blue Legacy, a Washington, D.C.–based nonprofit that
she founded in 2008 to leverage new and emerging technologies to connect mainstream
audiences with their local watersheds and their water planet.
As the visionary behind Blue Legacy's projects, she advocates the critical importance of
managing our water resources sustainably in order to preserve a healthy planet. Her global
initiatives seek to inspire and empower individuals to protect not only the ocean and its
inhabitants, but also the human communities that rely on the purity of freshwater resources.
As the third‐generation of Cousteaus to explore with the National Geographic Society,
Alexandra believes that some of the most important exploring we can undertake in the 21st
century will take place in our imaginations as we innovate and re‐imagine solutions to the
pressing environmental issues that confront and define our species today.
Alexandra Cousteau: A trusted voice for water and environmental issues
Earlier this year, Alexandra served as the Global Water Advisor and spokesperson for the
global Live Earth 2010 Run for Water—a project that teams her public advocacy on
environmental issues with actress Jessica Biel, musician Pete Wentz and many more in a
worldwide event on water.
Alexandra Cousteau BIO Page 1 of 3
Alexandra Cousteau BIO Page 2 of 3
In early 2009, Alexandra joined the Discovery Channel line‐up, co‐hosting “Blue August”
with her brother Philippe, Jr. and serving as a Chief Correspondent on Water Issues for
Discovery’s “Planet Green”.
In 2008, she was honored as a National Geographic “Emerging Explorer”—an elite group
of eleven visionary young trailblazers from around the world who push the boundaries of
discovery, adventure, and global problem solving. She has been honored as an “Earth Trustee”
by the UN and regularly delivers testimony on critical policy issues before the U.S. Congress.
She currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Global Water Challenge, Mother Nature
Network, and EarthEcho; and the steering committee of The Shark Alliance.
Alexandra’s work regularly earns global recognition and her 2009 Expedition: Blue
Planet project was named a finalist in two categories at the prestigious Jackson Hole
Environmental Film Festival. She is regularly featured in publications ranging from Cosmopolitan
and Elle to National Geographic and Scientific American. Alexandra and her brother Philippe
Cousteau Jr, received the South Carolina Aquarium “Environmental Stewardship Award” in
2009 and Alexandra was most recently honored with the “Peace Building and Environmental
Stewardship Award” from the Friends of the Arava Institute in December 2009 for her
commitment to using her voice to advocate for the importance of protecting the environment
and show that water is a vehicle to for peace.
As conversations on environmental issues move into the “mainstream,” global
audiences look beyond sensationalism and celebrity for credible voices on the issues or our
time. As a Cousteau, Alexandra builds upon the more than 60 years of global name recognition
to engage consumers who expect to hear credible environmental information from the third
generation of this pioneering family of explorers. For millions around the globe, “Cousteau” is
synonymous with discovery and protection of our natural world. When Cousteau earned the
first of his three Oscars for Le Monde du Silence in 1957, he paved the way for leveraging film
and media to teach environmental stewardship.
Alexandra Cousteau BIO Page 3 of 3
In the television series The Underwater World of Jacques Cousteau, Alexandra’s father
Philippe and Captain Cousteau produced the most popular documentary series in broadcast
history, setting a record at the time for Emmys and eventually showing in more than 100
nations, from the Soviet Union to Brazil and Japan. In addition to being widely credited for
turning National Geographic into a global brand, the family still holds the publications record
for cover stories.
Born into the family business, Alexandra joined her parents in Easter Island on her first
expedition at just four months old. By the age of three, she had toured Africa, exploring Egypt,
Tunisia, Uganda and Kenya in the arms of her father. And like her father, she is one of the few
who learned to dive with SCUBA from Captain Cousteau himself at the tender age of seven.
It is against this backdrop that Alexandra weaves the romance of adventure and
discovery into a modern call for action. Fluent in English, French and Spanish, Alexandra is
rapidly building a significant global audience of her own. By coupling traditional media tours
and film with social media platforms, Alexandra has helped NGO, governmental, and corporate‐
led water programs engage record audiences for action. She lends leadership on both corporate
and non‐profit boards around the world including Global Water Challenge and her own Blue
Legacy International. She will release her first book, This Blue Planet, in 2011 through the
Penguin Group. ###
KENNY BROAD CAVE DIVER, ENVIRONMENTAL ANTHROPOLOGIST
In Kenny Broad’s line of work, exploring submerged caves and blue holes, one mistake
can equal death. He and his team must take every precaution to avoid such dangers as stirring
up sediments that can wipe out visibility, succumbing to nausea as they pass through a toxic
layer of hydrogen sulfide, or getting lost in maze‐like passageways with a limited supply of
diving gasses.
The need to study blue
holes is urgent, as they are
among the least studied and
most threatened habitats on
Earth. Over 90 percent of the
Earth’s unfrozen fresh water is in
underground aquifers. These
systems are a source of drinking water for locals, boast a unique
biodiversity of microbial and multicellular life that shed light on the evolution of life, and, due
to their unique water chemistry, perfectly preserve skeletal remains of long extinct species,
including humans. Cave formations such as stalagmites can be used to reconstruct climate as
the Earth passed in and out of the ice ages, allowing us to better judge the rates and possible
impacts of modern changes in climate.

Kenny Broad Bio Page 1 of 2
Kenny Broad Bio Page 2 of 2
These cave systems—with their reversing tides—can transition from giant rooms to
narrow holes that divers must remove all of their gear in order to squeeze through. “You can’t
send a remotely operated vehicle in to explore caves because the technology simply doesn’t
exist,” he says. “It’s one of the few environments left on the planet where you must physically
go to learn about it. It’s great for job security.”
An entertaining and witty presenter, Broad’s work combines the study of risk
perception, exploration, and environmental anthropology. His interdisciplinary training includes
an M.A. in marine affairs and policy from the University of Miami, and a Ph.D. in anthropology
from Columbia University. He is currently an associate professor in the Division of Marine
Affairs and Policy at the University of Miami and the Director of the Abess Center for Ecosystem
Science and Policy and holds a joint appointment at Columbia University Lamont‐Doherty Earth
Observatory. Broad has participated and led scientific and film expeditions around the world,
both above and under water. He was elected a Fellow National of the Explorers Club in 2009
and a National Geographic Emerging Explorer in 2006, and his most recent work was featured
as the cover story of the August 2010 issue of National Geographic. ###
Photograph by Joel Sartore
JOEL SARTORE
Best known for his photographs of wildlife, particularly endangered species, Joel Sartore
wields his camera in the battle to conserve natural spaces and the habitats they support.
Of his 30‐plus stories for National Geographic magazine, several have made an indelible mark
on the places and animals the articles chronicle. Sartore’s March 2000 National Geographic
cover story—“Madidi: Will Bolivia Drown Its New National Park?”—helped convince the
Bolivian government to abandon its plans to
build a large‐scale hydroelectric dam that would
have submerged a large portion of pristine
forest. Sartore’s photograph of an oil‐covered
brown pelican appeared on the cover of the
October 2010 National Geographic cover story
– “The Spill.”
Closer to home he has covered such
hot button issues as Alaska’s North Slope,
where big oil, wild creatures, and native populations collide in the largest remaining U.S.
wilderness. A favorite among National Geographic presenters, Sartore’s entertaining
presentations blend humor with powerful conservation messages and award‐winning
photography of wildlife and the places they inhabit. ###

CRYSTAL ANNIVERSARY OF FREE WATER EDUCATION FESTIVAL FOR O.C. SCHOOLS NOW OPEN FOR REGISTRATION
Disneyland Resort is Presenting Sponsor of Two-Day Festival for Orange County 4th-6th Graders
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. – (Oct. 18, 2010) The Orange County Water District's (OCWD)
Groundwater Guardian Team will present the 15th annual Children’s Water Education Festival
March 23-24, 2011, at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum in Yorba Linda. The
Festival, which is the largest of its kind in the nation, educates Orange County’s fourth, fifth and
sixth grade students about water and the environment.
The Festival is provided at no cost to schools, making public and private financial support
crucial to the success of this educational event and its continued growth. While the event is free,
many schools are unable to attend because of transportation costs. An easy way for individuals
and organizations in the community to support their neighborhood school is to help underwrite
transportation costs, which generally runs $300 to $500 per bus. Contributions are tax deductible.
Presented by the Orange County Water District, Disneyland Resort, National Water
Research Institute, Municipal Water District of Orange County and the Orange County Water
District Groundwater Guardian Team, the mission of the Festival is to educate students about
water-related and conservation issues that correspond to California Science Standards. The
Festival teaches youth to think “blue” and make a difference in protecting our water resources for
today, tomorrow and for future generations.

CHILDREN’S WATER EDUCATION FESTIVAL ADD 1-1-1
HOW TO REGISTER
Year after year, teachers return to the Festival with their classes to engage in a unique
educational opportunity. Orange County teachers can register their classes online at
www.ocwd.com or www.childrenwaterfestival.com. Registration must be completed by December
10, 2010, however space is limited and selections are made on a first-come, first-served basis.
Educators are strongly encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
The Festival is a fun, environmental education program designed to teach students about
the interdependence of water, soil, plants, trees, animals and humans. Interactive displays and
activities feature topics like the water cycle, groundwater and surface water protection, wetlands
preservation, recycling, pollution prevention and water treatment, distribution and conservation,
and local environmental issues.
Conducting a Festival of this size requires more than 400 volunteers, staff and presenters,
as well as in-kind and monetary donations. Many of the schools that attend do not have
transportation for field trips and must charter one or more buses. An easy way for individuals in
the community to support their neighborhood school is to underwrite transportation costs,
generally $300 to $500 per bus. Contributions are tax deductible.
In addition to monetary and in-kind donations, presenters are needed to staff the Festival's
interactive booths. Through hands-on activities students learn about the world in which they live
and what they can do in their homes, communities and schools to protect our natural resources.
LOOKING FOR ENVIRONMENT, WATER, SANITATION, ENGINEERING, BLUE TECHNOLOGY, OCEAN EXPERTS
Festival organizers can assist presenters with the right tools, activities and partners to staff
an activity booth. Volunteers also are needed during the two-day festival to help with a range of
activities, from staffing registration tables to directing students to their next activity. The Festival
is looking for 200 volunteers to work each day.
To sponsor, donate supplies, present an activity or volunteer, contact Amanda Gavin at
(714) 378-3202 or [email protected]. To register, go to www.ocwd.com or direct to
www.childrenwaterfestival.com.
