As a university, cultivating the mind is our mission, duty, and honor. Our motto – “A cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy” – reminds us of this responsibility to society. To cultivate minds is to help students think in subtle and complex ways, to teach them the scientific method, to spark their interest in the lessons of history and to make them conversant in our own culture and that of others. It means forming the habit of investigation and discovery and practicing skills required for effective communication and leadership. Most importantly, a cultivated mind is one inspired to lifelong learning.

For our graduates, commencement marks a milestone in the development of a cultivated mind. As they begin new lives of accomplishment, we celebrate our graduates’ success and the unlimited possibilities before them.

Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs Class of 2012 Gift:

In recognition of the important role that cultural diversity plays in creating the vibrant campus community we enjoyed during our graduate studies, the Class of 2012 has chosen to raise funds to support a Cultural Diversity Fellowship at the LBJ School. Through this gift we hope to reduce the financial barriers that stand between future policy professionals and graduate school education, and acknowledge the inherent value that the diversity of ideas and experiences brings to our learning environment. By creating and participating in this fundraising opportunity, we show how much we value what the LBJ School has contributed to our lives and demonstrate our investment in its continued success.

We encourage those who celebrate with us today to honor our accomplishments by growing the Cultural Diversity Fellowship and giving back to the LBJ School in a way that is meaningful and sustaining. To donate to the Class of 2012 Gift, please go to: http://www.utexas.edu/lbj/2012classgift.

Bill Owens

Bill Owens served two terms as Governor of Colorado, from 1999-2007, having been re-elected by the largest margin in Colorado history. During his two terms, Owens was committed to improving Colorado’s trans-portation infrastructure, reforming education, and lowering the tax burden for families and businesses.

Owens – called “The Best Governor in America” in a 2003 cover story in National Review – was elected by his colleagues to serve as Chair of both the Western Governors’ Association and the Republican Governors Association.

Prior to his election as Governor, Owens served as State Treasurer for four years where he was responsible for the management of a $4 billion portfolio. He also served on the board of Colorado’s $25 billion pension fund – the Public Employees’ Retirement Association (PERA). Owens served as a Colorado State Senator from 1989 to 1995 and as a Colorado State Representative from 1983 to 1989. Prior to joining the Colorado House of Representatives, Owens was involved in local planning boards on the community level.

Owens served as non-executive Vice Chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland (Global Banking and Mar-kets), on the consulting staff of the Big Eight firm of Touche Ross & Co. (today’s Deloitte) as well as with the Gates Corporation, and as director of a statewide trade association.

Currently, Bill Owens is Managing Director of Renew Strategies, a Colorado based water and land develop-ment company. He is also a Senior Advisor at PCL Construction Enterprises, Inc., the largest construction company in Canada and the fifth largest construction company in the U.S. Owens serves on the boards of Key Energy Services (NYSE), Cloud Peak Energy (NYSE), Bill Barrett Corporation (NYSE), Federal Signal Corporation (NYSE), and FESCO, a Russian holding company with interests in shipping, railroads and ports which is listed on the Moscow exchange. He is also an advisor to two private equity firms.

Owens earned a master’s degree in public affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas, where he was awarded a two-year fellowship, and he received his Bachelor of Science from Ste-phen F. Austin State University.

Owens is a Senior Fellow at the University of Denver’s Institute for Public Policy Studies.

Lyndon Baines Johnson

The thirty-sixth president of the United States, Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, near Johnson City, Texas. He attended public school in Johnson City and graduated in 1924. In 1927 he enrolled in Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas, where he was involved in debate and campus politics and edited the school paper. After obtaining a bachelor of science degree, he began his career as a teacher and taught public speaking and debate in a Houston high school.

Politics soon drew Johnson from the classroom, though. In 1937 he won a Texas Congressional seat, which he filled for nearly a decade. In 1948 he was elected to the U.S. Senate, and he rose through the ranks to eventually become Senate Majority Leader in 1955. In 1960, as vice presidential nominee to John F. Kennedy, Johnson contributed significantly to the victory of the Democratic Party ticket.

Johnson assumed the presidency under tragic conditions, after the assassination of President Kennedy, but in 1964 he was elected president in an overwhelming victory over Senator Barry Goldwater. Responding to Johnson’s vision for a “Great Society” and his call for a “war on poverty,” the 89th Congress enacted a historic domestic reform program that had been unmatched since the Roosevelt years.

Upon stepping down from the presidency in 1969, Johnson returned to Texas where he prepared his memoirs and oversaw the development of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum and the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs.
