CONFESSION Pastor: O Lord, hear our cries for mercy. Turn Your ears to us for our sin

condemns us and we deserve nothing but judgment and condemnation.

People: Amen. Thanks be to God.

HYMN OF PRAISE LWML Song "Serve the Lord with Gladness" [Tune: “Onward Christian Soldiers”]

"Serve the Lord with gladness!" It is He alone Who redeemed us sinners, Guides us as His own To enjoy the blessings Of His love and grace Will at last in glory Meet us face to face. Refrain: Onward, then, for Jesus! Let this be our aim:

"Serve the Lord with gladness!" Glorify His name! "Serve the Lord with gladness!" Us He gave command To proclaim His Gospel Now in every land So that fellow sinners May, like us, be blest; Leading them to Jesus, We can serve Him best. Refrain "Serve the Lord with gladness!" Is there greater joy Than to serve the Master, Deigning to employ Us to build His Kingdom? Angels, too, rejoice Over every sinner Brought to heed His voice. Refrain

THE WORD OLD TESTAMENT Ruth 1:1-19a Reader: The Old Testament reading for the 17th Sunday after

Pentecost is from the 1st chapter of Ruth. In the days when the judges ruled,[a] there was a famine in the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab. The man’s name was Elimelek, his wife’s name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there. Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband. When Naomi heard in Moab that the LORD had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there. With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah. Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you, to your mother’s home. May the LORD show you kindness, as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands and to me. May the LORD grant that each of you will find rest in the home of another husband.” Then she kissed them goodbye and they wept aloud and said to her, “We will go back with you to your people.” But Naomi said, “Return home, my daughters.

Page 6: Lutheran Women’s Missionary League€¦ · they wept aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her. “Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law

6

Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands? Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me—even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons— would you wait until they grew up? Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter for me than for you, because the LORD’s hand has turned against me!” At this they wept aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her. “Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.” But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.” When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her. So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, “Can this be Naomi?” Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

PSALM Psalm 111 Reader: We read responsively the Psalm of the day. Reader: Praise the LORD. I will extol the LORD with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly. People: Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all who delight in them. Reader: Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever. People: He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate. Reader: He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever. People: He has shown his people the power of his works, giving them the lands of other nations. Reader: The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. People: They are established for ever and ever, enacted in faithfulness and uprightness. Reader: He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever—holy and awesome is his name. People: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise. EPISTLE 2 Timothy 2:1-13 Reader: The Epistle is from the 2nd book of Timothy, the 2st chapter.

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight

into all this. Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Luke 17:11-19 Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 17th chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord.

Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ. [Please be seated]

THE LWML PLEDGE (spoken by everyone)

In fervent gratitude for the Savior's dying love, and His blood-bought gift of redemption, we dedicate ourselves to Him with all that we are and have; and in obedience to His call for workers in the harvest fields, we pledge to Him our willing service, wherever and whenever He has need of us. We consecrate to our Savior our hands to work for Him; our feet to go on His errands; our voice to sing His praises; our lips to proclaim His redeeming love; our silver and our gold to extend His kingdom; our will to do His will; and every power of our life to the great task of bringing the lost and erring into eternal fellowship with Him. full of compassion. People: Suffering Savior, You know pain and heartache. Rest Your

eyes on all who suffer today on account of their faith. Comfort them with Your love. Reassure them that You know their situation and that their lives are not without hope.

Pastor: We have been given a great gift, Lord, in knowing that we are

saved sons and daughters of the heavenly Father. Give us courage to live boldly for the One who was crucified for us.

People: Cause us to see You in those around us who are hungry, thirsty, poorly clothed, without shelter, and in need. Work through us to answer and help those in need.

Pastor: Bless this country under Your care and guidance. Grant our

present and future leaders much needed wisdom and discernment for the difficult decisions ahead. Watch over our service members who have been called to serve heroically under difficult circumstances. May You fill them with courage and peace in their hearts. Lord, In Your Mercy

People: Hear Our Prayer

SACRAMENT The Lord's Supper is a gracious gift instituted by Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and as a means of receiving God’s grace. We believe that in the holy supper, the true body and blood of the Savior, along with the bread and wine, comes to us. We are encouraged by Jesus to commune frequently and God tells us through St. Paul that we must examine ourselves in preparation for a worthy reception of the sacrament. This includes a confession of our sins, a proclamation of our faith, and a determination to lead a more godly life in the future. If you also acknowledge your sinfulness and your need for a Savior, and recognize Christ’s physical presence in the bread and wine, we invite you to join us at the Lord’s table.

Page 13: Lutheran Women’s Missionary League€¦ · they wept aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her. “Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law

13

NOTE: If you have a physical condition that would prohibit you from taking wine in the Lord’s Supper, a few individual cups of white grape juice, instead of wine, are placed in the center of each communion tray for you. . For those with a gluten allergy we now provide gluten-free wafers. Please help yourself to the gluten-free wafers located in the center of the tray.

PREFACE Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Pastor: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, from Your tender mercy You

gave Your only Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. By the one offering of Himself on the cross, He made there a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. And in His Holy Gospel, He instituted and commanded us to celebrate a perpetual remembrance of His precious death until He comes again.

Therefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of Your dearly beloved Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, we Your humble servants celebrate and make here, before Your divine majesty, with these Your holy gifts, the commemoration Your Son has willed us to make. Remembering His Passion, mighty Resurrection and glorious Ascension, we give You most hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits which He has procured for us. As our Savior Christ has commanded and taught us, we are bold to sing:

SANCTUS Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full, full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest! LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen

WORDS OF INSTITUTION Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took

bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: "Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me."

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

[Please be seated] AGNUS DEI Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins: have mercy on us. Jesus, Redeemer, Redeemer of the world: Give us Your peace, give us Your peace.

are to take JOY into our daily lives. We look forward to our study today and pray that you will join us for Bible study, discussion, fellowship, and prayer. If you have questions, please contact Kay Jacobson at 352-638-2528. Have a blessed week!

REVELATION: THE NOT-SO DISTANT TRUMPET CALL Pastor Dan will once again be leading a Wednesday night Bible study, this time studying the final book of the Bible, Revelation. Many people

are troubled by this book, or get caught up in the many confusing interpretations they hear or read in books and on television or radio. Revelation is intended to be a book of great comfort for Christians, and when properly read, can bring great joy. We invite you to join us in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesdays, beginning October 23, at 4PM for this study. As we did with the study of Romans, a meal will be served at the conclusion of the study. So that we have an idea of how many will be at the meals, we ask that you sign up by either signing the sheet at church or calling the church office to let us know that you plan on attending.

MEN! SATURDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY! Pastor Dan invites you to join him on Saturday mornings at 8:00 a.m., for a low-key, discussion-filled men's discussion of Scripture.

What a great way to get the weekend started! 5 or 50 men, we'll enjoy each other's company and begin our weekend with our Lord. See you Saturday? BYOC (bring your own coffee) to our Fellowship Hall!

OPERATION SHOEBOX-Once again we have an opportunity to support our troops overseas with more than prayers. Operation Shoebox ships ditty bags to men and women overseas weekly, not just at Christmas. Their supplies vary, but at the moment,

they need small hand sanitizers, gum packets (5 stick kind), and juice bottle packets for 8, 12, or 16 oz. water bottles. All of these are available at the Dollar Tree, etc. Check donations for postage made out to Operation Shoebox and left with the church office are greatly appreciated. It costs at least $40 a box to ship overseas. Later we will be asking for help sewing the weekly cloth ditty bags. There is a cart in Classroom 4 marked Operation Shoebox for donations. Thank you.

THE ROCK- Thank you for your continued prayers and donations for these students at Belleview High School. Your support is greatly appreciated! Recent needs expressed by the students include: deodorant, cereal, toothpaste & toothbrushes. Please leave donations in Room 4B.

TLC “Veterans Helping Veterans” is an off-shoot of Trinity’s Barnabas chapter. The idea is to help Veterans with simple tasks around the home that, because of physical challenges, they are unable to do. Examples would be a changing a light bulb where a

ladder is needed, moving an appliance or sofa, etc. There are many others where a contractor is not needed but basic do-it-yourself skills will suffice. We need members of the congregation whom we can call on when a request is made. All tasks will be done by appointment at the convenience of the volunteer and a willingness and ability to perform the help desired. At least 2 people will be involved with all projects. This is a great way reach out to veterans and perform a service that will earn appreciation for Trinity. Please call Nick Bock at 352-470-4577 or the church office at 352-307-4500 if you are willing to add your name to the list.

STEWARDSHIP NOTE- “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church

and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” - Eph. 3:20-21 God delights in exceeding expectations and in pouring out mercies in abundance. This truth stands in contrast to our fears about lacking what we need for “this body and life.” We have an abundantly blessing God who has proven His love for us on the cross. How could we not trust Him? How could we not respond to His love with generosity toward His mission in the Church? How could we not have a desire to imitate Him in blessing others?

Christianity is the only religion of the world to insist that reconciliation with the creator cannot ever be accomplished by our performance. Only through the revelation of a Savior, who would be the substitute sacrifice for all of our wrongdoing and make us right with God, can we finally overcome our sense of separation from the Almighty. This is a gift and promise of life that we rejoice in and share with Christians around the world. We share with all Christians the desire that everyone would come to know Jesus and experience a life under “new management” – the grace and purpose of God. Trinity is a member of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. We enjoy a blessed confessional heritage of Biblical Christianity with over 65 million Lutherans around the world and over 7 million Lutherans in the U.S. alone. What we know and believe comes only from the Bible, which is God’s inspired Word. While the Bible is certainly our guide for holy living, the primary purpose of the Bible is to reveal Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. We believe every Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church is a “little Easter”, a celebration of the resurrection of our Lord. We celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper every Sunday in all worship services. We believe the forgiveness and strength of faith we are promised through receiving the very body and blood of Christ is so greatly needed by all of God’s people, for we are truly a community of wounded healers. For a Christian Church to be anything else than a place of common fellowship and unity and a source of strength for our fragile faith is to fail its God-ordained purpose and intent. Our pastors would like to be of service to you in any way they can. Feel free to call the church office or speak with Pastor Dan or Pastor Blair directly if you wish to find out more about the church or have more personal needs of a spiritual nature.
