Lucille’s Legacy at Champion:Champion Shrine Volunteer Lucille Barbiaux Has Spent More Than 30 Years Carrying Out the Message of Our Lady of Good Help (Story Inside)

Every year at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help the novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary is devotedly prayed and celebrated. This “Two Hearts” devotion cannot be reduced to just another novena or side devotion that fills gaps in the liturgical calendar. This form of piety within the Church today is not just needed, it is essential.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary is crucial for the restoration of life and culture surrounding humanity today. From time immemorial these two hearts have symbolized the intense love that our Blessed Lord and our Lady have for all.

One can never go wrong with a strong and intense devotion to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Indeed, many promises come with such devotion. Our Lord promised Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque that those who remain devoted to His Sacred Heart will (among many other promises):

“have all the graces necessary for their state of life; I will give peace in their families; Persons who propagate this devotion shall have their names eternally written in my Heart; In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all-

powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.” These promises are of course assured to those who practice devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus fervently and consistently.

Our Blessed Mother, who appeared at Fatima, gave these promises to those devoted to her Immaculate Heart: “Tell them (all men and women) that I promise to assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation all those who, in order to make reparation to me (because of the offences against her Immaculate Heart), on the First Saturday of five successive months, to go to confession, receive Holy Communion, say five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for a quarter of an hour, meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary.” Following these prescriptions, both Hearts promise help with final perseverance and salvation.

The “Two Hearts” devotion, particularly the nine first Fridays and five first Saturdays, contain a treasure trove of graces. The

connection between the Two Hearts is not hard grasp. God willed that Mary, in relation to her Son, should cooperate with Him in the regeneration of human kind. Please join us in our Novena of Masses and prayer in preparation for the celebration of the feasts of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary from June 1st through the 9th.

God’s Grace and Blessings to you all!

The Healing Power of a Good Confession Despite our sinfulness, beginning with the first sin of Adam and Eve, God has always sought to restore our relationship with him. Though “‘God created us without us: . . . he did not will to save us without us.’ To receive his mercy, we must admit our faults” (CCC 1847). Our Lord continually calls His flock to conversion. Just as Jesus forgave the sins of the paralytic and restored him to bodily health, so too Jesus wants the Church, through the Holy Spirit, to continue his work of healing and salvation, especially amongst her own members.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church beautifully states:

“‘The whole power of the sacrament of Penance consists in restoring us to God’s grace and joining us with him in an intimate

friendship.’ Reconciliation with God is thus the purpose and effect of this sacrament. For those who receive the sacrament of Penance with contrite heart and religious disposition, reconciliation ‘is usually followed by peace and serenity of conscience with strong spiritual consolation.’ Indeed, the sacrament of Reconciliation with God brings about a true ‘spiritual resurrection,’ restoration of the dignity and blessings of the life of the children of God, of which the most precious is friendship with God.” (CCC 1468)

Confession is so much more than just going through the motions; it is a powerful opportunity to live in the peace of Christ. In the Gospels, Jesus shows us the compassionate heart of the Father and in the process, He reveals his own heart. He told us “there will be more joy in

heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance” (Luke 15:7). Experience the peace of Christ by making a good confession this Easter season.

Lucille BarbiauxBy Corrie Campbell

For almost three decades, Lucille Barbiaux has been praying five decades. A spry 88 years young, she has spent the past 30 years at Our Lady of Good Help helping others pray the rosary.

As with Adele Brise when Our Lady appeared to her at Champion to give her a set of duties to carry out, Lucille has taken her duty very seriously, in our Lady’s honor. She knows, from having seen, in her own life and the lives of others, the transformative graces of Our Lady of Good Help, that the rosary can serve as a spiritual roadmap to catechesis and conversion, charting our paths, through its prayers, to peace, protection, healing, and hope; through Mary, to Jesus.

Lucille has been on that path herself both as a child who grew up in the shadows of the shrine, and as an adult praying her own rosary from the pews and as the Shrine’s official orator of the rosary during what has been traditionally one of its most attended and reverent Marian Feast Day Masses: the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“From the time I was a little girl, I remember thousands coming to the Shrine at Robinsonville, (the name of the town before it was renamed by Adele Brise) all gathering, walking around the back, most praying the rosary, many stopping to pray on their knees. There were long processions, you could see

people praying for miles,” Lucille said.

Little did Lucille know that, as an adult, she would be leading thousands in praying the rosary at the Shrine.

“I started to come out to the Shrine with a group of ladies back in the early 90s,” Lucille said. “ We would take turns praying the rosary and I ended up praying it at the Mass. (Assumption)”

While some might feel a little intimidated by the challenge of leading thousands in prayer, Lucille credits Our Lady with giving her the inner strength to carry out her mission.

“Go and fear nothing, I will help you,” was Our Lady’s parting message to Adele Brise when she appeared to her at Champion in 1859.

With the same sense of duty and obligation that Adele embodied after she encountered the Blessed Virgin Mary, Lucille has, in turn, carried out Our Lady’s mission for her for the past 30 years.

After the loss of her husband and some challenges with health that come with becoming more seasoned, Lucille decided to scale back her duties just a bit. She wants to devote more time to her family of eight children, their children and children’s children, who lift her up in prayer and surround her in love. As such, in the past year, Lucille

decided to share her duties of leading Assumption Mass rosary with an equally spry counterpart and dedicated Shrine volunteer, Dan Drossart.

“I have continued to pray the rosary with others at the Shrine in the mornings, but it was maybe time for another person to step up and volunteer for the (Assumption) Mass and procession,” Lucille said.

In addition to service on earth paving the hopeful path to a reward of heaven, Lucille says the reward of volunteer work for Our Lady and her Son, Jesus, here at Champion is like experiencing a little heaven here on earth.

“The rosary and this place (the Shrine), brings a peace that changes lives,” Lucille said.

If you are interested in experiencing the same sense of peace experienced by Lucille and others who volunteer at the Shrine, we ask you to consider applying to become an official Our Lady of Good Help-er. There are plenty of “Good Help” opportunities to assist with all aspects of Mass, at prayerful events, reflections, on-site pilgrimages and with conferences. Work during the week? The good news is Good Helpers are needed to help with large events and masses held at the Shrine on weekends.

Please feel free to contact the Shrine Office at 920-866-2571 or for an application or let us know you would like to volunteer at Champion Shrine by going to www.shrineofourladyofgoodhelp.com.

Farewell for Now to SammyIf you have visited Champion Shrine over the course of the past dozen years, chances are you might have been greeted by, or come into contact with, a local farm dog named Sammy. While Sammy was not in residence here, she loved to stop by, visit with pilgrims and quickly became a beloved staple of the Shrine. If, by Our Lady’s grace, you met this fine canine lady of grace while at Champion, you know Sammy was a very special, sensitive dog who provided a sense of peace, comfort, joy and love for all. It is with great

sadness for all those who encountered this spirit-filled pup here at Champion that we report to you her passing this past winter. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Abts family, our next door neighbors who were her owners, and to Dan Drossart, our devoted Shrine ambassador and docent who cared so deeply for her and took care of her when she was on site. We were glad these fine people were with Sammy to comfort her in her final days, just as she was with all of us at times when many of us needed comfort. May Our Blessed Mother comfort all those who grieve her loss.

Shrine SpotlightOur Lady’s Message Is Still Relevant It is well documented that when the settlers first emigrated from Belgium in the 1850’s, they faced a colossal struggle to survive. Having invested most of their money on heavily wooded property they assumed was valuable, they were forced with the daunting task of clearing it for farming. They worked tremendously hard for very little money and were constantly fighting disease and the harsh Wisconsin winters.Considering that the nearest church was over 10 miles away, it’s easy to see why so many fell astray in their faith. Fr. Perrodin, who often visited the Belgian settlers from Green Bay, had this to say of the Belgians; “They neglect their duties of religion, and live as unbelievers. Their children are not instructed and grow up without knowing God.” (14, Sr. Dominica)

Surely this Belgian community in Wisconsin wasn’t the only place in America where people were losing their faith. So why is it, that of all the places in America in need of

a message on conversion and catechesis, did the Blessed Mother choose Robinsonville, WI? The answer could simply be because of Adele Brise. Adele shared the same burdens as her countrymen, but unlike the majority, Adele would make that 10-mile trek every Sunday for Mass. Even her own parents didn’t accompany her that day on October 9th. Mary chose Adele to spread Her message because Adele was an exemplification of those who struggle in life yet place God above all else.

When we reflect on Our Blessed Mother’s message to Adele, it’s important to highlight not only how pleased She was that Adele received Holy Communion, but how much She desired that people, especially children, know Her Son Jesus. Our Lady’s message rings as true today as it did 159 years ago. Like the Belgians, people today experience difficult trials in life, and many have fallen away from the faith and don’t catechize

their children. It’s imperative, for the sake of our children, that we cling to our faith, not abandon it, in times of hardship. Adele most certainly did, and she went on to save countless souls at a result.
