Legacy System Migration Workbench

This document is an instructional guide to the data transfer workbench (transaction LSMW) for SAP

version 4.6.

CREATING A PROJECT

1. Open the Legacy System Migration Workbench

•  Transaction LSMW

2.  Create a new project

•  Click Create Entry

3.  Assign a unique Project name and Description

If you want to transfer data from several legacy systems, you may create a project e.g. for every legacy

system

4.  Create a Subproject for the new project

•  Assign a unique Subproject name and Description

A subproject is an ID that is used as a further structuring attribute

5.  Create an Object for the new project

•  Assign a unique Object name and Description An Object is an ID to name the business object

6.  Go to the interactive process guide.

•  Click Enter/Execute

DATA MIGRATION STEPS

1.  Change to Doubleclick=Edit mode.

•  Click on the Doubleclick=Display button

This button determines whether display mode or change mode is selected by double clicking

2.  Maintain Object Attributes

•  Double click on the radiobutton next to Maintain object attributes

3.  Select object type and import techniques

•  Choose whether data transfer is one-time or periodic. In the case of periodic transfer, files cannot be read from the PC. This adds processing step

Frame program for the periodic data transfer

•  Flag whether the file names are system dependantThis gives you a chance to later on enter files names per system id

•  Choose which Object type and import technique will be used •  When Standard Batch/Direct Input is used

Enter an Object from the drop down menu

Enter a Method from the drop down menu

•  When a Business Object Method (BAPI) is used

Enter a Business Object from the drop down menu

Enter a Method from the drop down menu

•  Click on the save button at the top of the page

•  Click on the green arrow to go back to the data migration step page

4.  Maintain Source Structures

Double click on the radiobutton next to Maintain source structures

5.  Define the Structures

•  Click on the Create Structure Button

In this step you define the structure of the object with name, description, and the hierarchical

relationships

•  Assign a unique Source structure and Description

Create a single structure for each input file that will be used  If the conversions use multiple input files, multiple structures should be created

If the SAP target structure contains a header detail relation, then the source structure should be

defined with the same header/detail relationship

•  Click on Create Field Field order should match order in input file

•  Enter a Field nameThis field name should match the name of the field in the input file

Field name cannot contain blanks•  Enter a Field Description

This field description should match the description of the field in the input file

•  Enter a Field length

7.  Maintain Structure Relations

•  Double click on the radiobutton next to Maintain structure relations

•  Position the cursor on a field of the SAP structures / target structures

Map source structure to each target structure where field(s) in the source structure should map to

a field(s) in the target structure

To look at fields in the target structure click on the description of the target structure, e.g. Header

Segment

•  Click the Relationship Button

NOTE: Source structures can be mapped to multiple target structures, e.g. a source structure could contain

multiple fields and needs to be mapped to two different target structures

•  Click on the save button at the top of the page

•  Click on the green arrow to go back to the data migration step page

8.  Maintain Field Mapping and Conversion Rules

•  Double click on the radiobutton next to Maintain field mapping and conversion rules

For an input file on PC:

•  Type correct file nameThis file name should be specified in the Technical Design

•  Type description

•  Choose the correct radiobutton under the File contents section If a file contains data for several source structures, the field sequence has to correspond to the

source structure definition If a file contains data for a single source structure, either the field sequence has to correspond to

the source structure definition or field names have to be specified at the beginning of the file

which can be used for assigning the columns to the field

•  Choose the correct delimiter

•  Check the appropriate File structures

If Order of fields in source structure is checked then make sure the fields were defined in the

correct order

•  Choose the appropriate File Type

•  Choose the appropriate Code page
