Equality and Diversity

LSIS Overview

Improvement Through People.

Page 2: Lsis e&d overview

BackgroundAt the end of last year ( 2012) I was asked to attend

two LSIS training events on how to embed Equality and Diversity into teaching sessions.

These events covered the structured, best practice approach for embedding E&D.

The following slideshow covers the methods of embedding E & D and is intended as an over view of how we should be embedding and teaching E&D at Business Impact

This slideshow was to be used as a teaching aid to be delivered at a team meeting in January 2013

What Ofsted has to sayOutcomes for learners

Inspectors will make a judgement on outcomes for learners by evaluating the extent to which: •all learners achieve and make progress relative to their starting points and learning goals•achievement gaps are narrowing between different groups of learners•learners develop personal, social and employability skills•learners progress to courses leading to higher-level qualifications and into jobs that meet local and national needs.

Page 4: Lsis e&d overview

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment

Inspectors will make a judgement on the quality of teaching, learning and assessment by evaluating the extent to which: •learners benefit from high expectations, engagement, care, support and motivation from staff•staff use their skills and expertise to plan and deliver teaching, learning and support to meet each learner’s needs•staff initially assess learners’ starting points and monitor their progress, set challenging tasks, and build on and extend learning for all learners •learners understand how to improve as a result of frequent, detailed and accurate feedback from staff following assessment of their learning•teaching and learning develop English, mathematics and functional skills, and support the achievement of learning goals and career aims•appropriate and timely information, advice and guidance support learning effectively

• equality and diversity are promoted through teaching and learning.

Effectiveness of leadership and management

Inspectors will make a judgement on the effectiveness of leadership and management by evaluating the extent to which leaders, managers and, where applicable, governors: •demonstrate an ambitious vision, have high expectations for what all learners can achieve, and attain high standards of quality and performance•improve teaching and learning through rigorous performance management and appropriate professional development•evaluate the quality of the provision through robust self-assessment, taking account of users’ views, and use the findings to promote and develop capacity for sustainable improvement •successfully plan, establish and manage the curriculum and learning programmes to meet the needs and interests of learners, employers and the local and national community

• actively promote equality and diversity, tackle bullying and discrimination, and narrow the achievement gap

• safeguard all learners.

What is Equality?

Describe what equality means without using the words:

opportunities or rights

Page 7: Lsis e&d overview

Equality – alternative definition• Parity between groups• Comparison between groups

Can we say:“all things being equal, there is no difference

between how x and y are treated”For exampleCan we say:“ all things being equal, there is no difference between how

the Apprenticeship Officers are treated compared to the permanent Head office staff”

Page 8: Lsis e&d overview

What is Diversity?

• Human nature – ‘natural state of things’• Taste, personality, behaviours, traits

‘stretch diversity’ – ‘constraints’ become ‘normal’

• Diverse teams are more effective• Use of Diversity in teaching adds value

Page 9: Lsis e&d overview

What is inclusion?

Individuals still have personalities, traits and behaviours, but as part of a group have a common ‘outlook’ – consideration, inclusion and ‘belonging’

Examples of inclusion in society:

Buses that ‘lower’ to allow less abled people to get on / off

No increased fares for wheelchair users in taxis

Page 10: Lsis e&d overview

What to avoid• Stereotyping• Mocking – ‘big fat gypsy wedding’, TOWIE, Geordie

Shore• Marginalizing – exclusion of some groups• Stigmatizing – e.g. Mental health, physical

appearance• Blaming• Controlling• ‘Exotifying’ – “ isn’t she marvellous in that

wheelchair”• ‘Invisibilizing’ – not mentioning, avoiding issues,

groups• ‘Tokenizing’ – “ we’re lucky having ethnic staff in our

company”

E & D in teaching and learningThe process of teaching using the content of

the syllabus to prepare students for the world of work and life long learning

Equality & Diversity is about how we teach and what we teach and preparation for the

world of work in a diverse society

Page 12: Lsis e&d overview

Process of teaching• Interactions• Management of group and groups• Promotion of discussion• Setting of SMART targets for achievement

These criteria produce inclusive lessons where each individual student and each type of student ( class, ethnicity, gender etc) has an equal chance to do well

Page 13: Lsis e&d overview

Content of the syllabus• Lesson content and resources used• Skills and knowledge taught• Anecdotes and examples used to illustrate

learning• Nature of assignments and assessment of

learning

These criteria produce an inclusive curriculum where each subject is placed in its global, social and historical context. This will make explicit the contribution of usually invisible people (such a women, black, working class, disabled etc)

Page 14: Lsis e&d overview

Preparation for world of work and Lifelong Learning• Skills of collaboration, respect for differences and

team work• Replacing of prejudice and stereotypes with facts

and respect of difference• Building of knowledge and understanding of a

diverse society and impact of inequality

These topics result in a positive experience for students and prepare them for the challenges of life and work in the ‘real’ world.

Page 15: Lsis e&d overview

Expanding on what is taught• Origins of knowledge and ideas, and influences from

outside the west• The contribution of women and others- forgotten and

overlooked groups• The similarities between cultures, beliefs and daily

experiences – not just the differences• The impact of wealth, poverty and inequality at home and

in other places• An assessment of who pays the price• The invisible cost to others and their environment• The way prejudice, stereotypes, stigma and injustice relate

to the subject

Analysis of findingsRemember

• Can’t include all brainstormed ideas• Prioritise and select best based on scheme

of work and lesson time, etc.• Add to lesson plan and highlight

If asked by an inspector / auditor, could your learner identify Equality and Diversity in their lesson

Page 18: Lsis e&d overview

Questions, Queries & Concerns• Are we actually teaching subjects, courses

and curriculum?• How to use lesson plans and teaching with

BTEC Workbooks?• How to create lesson plans for 1 – to – 1

sessions?• Anything else????
