Family Cookout on Saturday, July 4, 2015 (2:00pm – 6:00pm) The Lodge would like to stress the event’s title of a “Family Cookout”. The Lodge is trying to have more family involvement in our events, and this is a good offering for our goal. The typical barbeque food offerings (hot dogs and hamburgers) will be provided at this event; so
why sweat over the hot grill; and we will be providing many side dishes to satisfy everyone’s appetite. Bring your spouse (or favorite girlfriend/boyfriend), your children, your parents, your immediate family in town, your in-laws (hopefully you like them), and your friends to this event; as the Lodge will do all the work and you can relax!

Annual Bull Roast - Saturday, July 11, 2015 (2:00pm – 6:00pm) Remember the slogan of the 1980s for the Wendy’s Fast Food Restaurant “Where is the Beef?” On this day, the beef is at the Arlington #1315 Moose Lodge! Last year, we cooked 53 lbs. of roast beef and 45 lbs. of smoked beef brisket on the grill for this event and it should not be any less this year. Bring your family, friends, and especially everyone’s appetite for this “food-fest”
event. There will be plenty of side dishes to complement the main course; and we will be offering some other entrée for those that do not eat “red” meat. What better way to spend a lazy, hazy, relaxing Saturday in the summer than at the Moose Lodge enjoying great food (that you did not have to cook), drinking your favorite beverage, and having great conversation with your fellow members.
Reduction of the Annual LOOM Membership Fees for Arlington #1315 to $45.00 On June 7th, the LOOM members at a Special Meeting approved the reduction of the annual Arlington #1315 LOOM membership fee
from $60.00 to $45.00. The Lodge will no longer pay the $20.00 application fee for any new members. Please note that it will take approximately 90 days from the time the paperwork is submitted by the Lodge before Moose International will
recognize this fee reduction!

Electronic Pull-Tabs at the Arlington Fraternity “Live” Playing on Friday, July 10, 2015 Our members have enjoyed the electronic pull-tabs at other Lodges when we visited for the VMA District 4 Quarterly Meetings … NOW the Arlington Fraternity is “taking the giant step” to keep up with today’s world! The
Arlington #1315 Lodge has joined in a partnership with Powerhouse Gaming to provide a state-of-art gaming system. The installation of the gaming system will occur on Thursday, July 9 (during the day) with an explanation of the multiple games on the machines, how to use the system and play the games, available jackpots dependent upon selected bets, etc. after 5:00pm for our members to make a trial test (no actual money). The activation of the electronic pull-tabs gaming system will begin at the opening of the Arlington #1315 Moose Lodge on Friday, July 10, 2015. The initial configuration of the gaming system will consist of a fixed player station (with a comfortable chair) in the Non-Smoking Fireplace Eating Area, four (4) portable play stations with power docking connections within the Smoking Bar area (where the previous horseracing machines were located), and a gaming kiosk within the Non-Smoking Bar Area where players input their desired betting cash. It is noted that the portable play stations can be disconnected from the power docking connections and played anywhere within the Social Quarters (at both physical bars, at the tables within the Non-Smoking Fireplace Eating Area, etc.); however, there is a two-hour limit before the portable play stations need to be re-charged. As a player, you will need to deposit cash at the gaming kiosk; in which you will receive a “PIN number” to enter into the player station. Enter the “PIN number” at the start of play AND GOOD LUCK! At the end of play, if you are a winner or have unspent recorded funds, request a withdrawal receipt and give to the bartender “to cash in”. There are many other scenarios about unspent recorded funds that you may have questions about that could be explained at the trial test on Thursday, July 9, 2015. More information will be provided, and possible Lodge Gaming Rules, once the electronic pull-tabs system is implemented.

(3rd Consecutive Year) 23rd Pig Roast on Saturday, June 13th A Great Success!! This year the Arlington Fraternity had a team of three experienced members and one “first time” member make the trek to West Virginia on the day before the event to pick up approximately 250 lbs. of pork (1 pig). The “posse” of Billy Hensley (≈ 20 years of
pork traveling), Ray Broz (≈ 15 years), Tom Oderwald (≈ 9 years) and Bob Muretta (trainee) made the round-trip back to the Lodge by 3:00pm; with only one stop-off at the Romney Moose Lodge #1371 in West Virginia for lunch. Upon arrival at the Lodge, the pork parts (including the pig’s head) were placed on the grill to start the long cooking process. A deviation in the cooking process was implemented this year, and all the pork was fully cooked and ready for serving at the beginning of the event (a first in the past few years with no cooking “crisis”). The Pig Roast was a great success with 64 members/guests, not counting children, participating in the food fest; PLUS those who only came to the Social Quarters to socialize (no count was made)! The food buffet consisted of pulled pork with a few selections of sauces, grilled hot dogs, baked beans, corn on the cob, macaroni & cheese, zucchini & squash in Italian Dressing, coleslaw, cucumber salad, pickle tray, cheese & crackers, watermelon, and chips. AND the Koolerators (band) played all those remembered oldies that had the members/guests singing and dancing; first in the Rental Hall where the food was served and then moving into the Social Quarters later in the evening. The very hot & “muggy” weather kept most of the adults from venturing outside (except for the lonely grill chefs); but that did not stop the many children from playing and running around in the big backyard. The Arlington Fraternity extends a thank you to the valiant posse in getting the pork from West Virginia (and they enjoyed every minute of the road trip); to Billy Hensley & Tom Oderwald for being the grill chefs (pork cooking process); to Joyce Chaffins, Liz Coombs & Marty Medel for preparing the side food dishes of the buffet; to Karl Keller, Marty & Logan Medel, Billy Hensley & John Matis for cleaning up the backyard and some portion of the Rental Hall for the event, to Joyce Chaffins & Liz Coombs for setting up the buffet tables and the seating areas within the Rental Hall; to Nessa Ruoff, Betty Pamplin & John Matis for collecting the food fees; and to all the Arlington Fraternity members & guests who assisted in the clean-up after this event was over. The Arlington Fraternity apologizes if we omitted anyone who contributed to this event; but we want you to know that your efforts were greatly appreciated.

Father’s Day Breakfast – Sunday, June 21st The weather was great and the breakfast was superb… even if the air conditioning was dysfunction again. There were approximately 30 hungry participants who enjoyed a breakfast buffet consisting of a fruit salad, scramble eggs, grilled pancakes, crispy bacon, scrapple, home fries with onions and green peppers, a sausage/egg/cheese casserole, egg/spinach/mushroom crepes with Béarnaise sauce, cream chip of beef, biscuits, baked french toast, homemade danish pastries & brownies, coffee and orange juice. The Arlington Fraternity wants to thank the “kitchen full of chefs” (no fist fights were observed) for the outstanding offered food selection; consisting of Joyce Chaffins, Andrea Hensley, Nessa Ruoff, Patti Rodas, Anna Phillips, Rose Russo, Nora Rodas, Donna Heflin, Billy Hensley, and Tom Oderwald. A special thank you is extended to those fraternity members who “tidied up” the eating area before the event and to those who cleaned up after the event (who would have believed the number of dirty pots and pans for a simple two hour event).

Another Improvement … A Change in the Jukebox System! The Fraternity swapped the floor model digital jukebox with a smaller wall-mounted type; which was relocated near the open passageway within the Smoking Bar towards the Social Quarters regular entrance. This provides additional space for seating within the Smoking Bar area and eliminates the pathway through the dart playing area to play music!

Triple Crown Finale Celebration – Saturday, June 6th The attendees at this event celebrated when American Pharoah made history and finally won the Triple Crown in horseracing for the first time since 1987! The attendance at this Lodge event was good; but nothing
spectacular compared to recent social events (maybe the removal of the off-track betting at the Lodge contributed to fewer participants); but the offered food of barbeque pulled-pork and kielbasa/sauerkraut/potatoes was delicious! The Arlington Fraternity wants to thank Joyce Chaffins and John Matis for being the chefs of this event. For the record, not all planned social events are attractive to the majority of our members; but the fraternity tries to provide something for the interest of everyone!

Save the Date: July 18, 2015 We Need Your Attendance at the VA Moose Association District 4 Quarterly Meeting (Why not try for a third Attendance Trophy?) What better way to show that “we are family” than to continue to have the most members at the next Virginia Moose Association (VMA) District 4 Quarterly Meeting. We estimate that about 20 members need to attend in order to beat the other Moose Lodges. AND the next
Virginia Moose Association (VMA) District 4 Quarterly Meeting is close to our Lodge (about 10 miles away). The General Meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Franconia Family Moose Center #1076 (7701 Beulah Street, Alexandria, VA 22315).

Spring Cleaning at the Lodge – Saturday, May 30th The Arlington Fraternity accomplished a very thorough cleaning of the Social Quarters, the LOOM Board Room, the Fireplace Room (Non-Smoking Eating Area), and several rooms in the basement. The rugs were vacuumed, floors mopped, shelves dusted, tables/chairs/bar cleaned, and windows washed (interior) in those rooms on the First Floor of the Lodge. Lets not forget the removal of the cobwebs in the corners of these rooms … we said we needed a really good cleaning.
In the basement rooms, lots of trash and “maybe we can use these items sometime” (which were saved for probably a decade) were disposed. The old torn couches in the Fireplace Room were also disposed of to make room for the new couches. A large rental open-body trash container was completely filled at the end of the day! AND the vacuum cleaner that everyone thought would not pick up anything and considered useless was repaired (by replacing a broken belt and cleaning the bristles on the pickup roller … who would have thought)! The Arlington Fraternity extends a thank you to the following members for participating in the Spring Cleaning: Brian Birtell, Andre McFail, Ernie Halal, Joe Russo, Billy Hensley, Chuck Berge, Anna Phillips, Rose Russo, Judith York, Donna Heflin, Chris Garrett, Joyce Chaffins, Patti Rodas, Nora Rodas, Tim Nields, Mel Chrestman, and John Matis. Their efforts exceeded many hours of lugging, climbing stairs, “breaking their backs”, reaching for the stars (actually dust & cobwebs), etc. As promised, donuts and coffee were provided at the start of this event for breakfast (sugar always help get the adrenalin going). And for lunch, Joyce Chaffins prepared a ham & bean soup, and tacos with various toppings. A funny story … the Governor always observed three windows in the middle of the front profile of the Lodge when he parked at the Lodge; but he did not realize that the fireplace of the Non-Smoking Eating Area was build behind the middle window until he cleaned the windows (interior) and only counted two windows to clean. Talk about “egg on his face”! Is he the only one that did not realize this past construction?

The “almost hurricane” weather did not dampen our chefs’ efforts in grilling the cookout meats for this event (they put up a tent to cook)! The event had about 30 attendees; with 22 participants who enjoyed the delicious food buffet. For the meat variety … we had grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, and pork ribs; with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese, and buns to complement the meat fixings. For side dishes, there were baked beans, cold tri-color pasta and cucumber salad, a platter of pickles and olives, crackers & cheese, chips & dip, watermelon pieces, and homemade cookies. Thank you Tom Oderwald, Billy Hensley, and Joyce Chaffins for providing the food selections. A surprise offering was fried watermelon by Billy Hensley … opinion of taste still pending.

First, I want to thank everyone for putting up with the lack of air conditioning within the Lodge while we attempted (unfortunately for a second time within the month of June) to repair an “ancient” system that was provided when the Lodge building was built (1964). Unfortunately, new parts of our air
conditioning system are no longer manufactured and we had to search for “re-built” components. In addition, there are not many repairmen, or their companies, today that are familiar with our equipment that would make the troubleshooting any easier. The LOOM Lodge is considering many ideas to mediate this situation in the future; however, available funds in the bank present many limitations. Second, I want to thank our Arlington Fraternity membership in providing support to the resurrection of the Legion Committee at the Arlington #1315 Moose Lodge. As previously noted in other announcements, our Fraternity needs to “get-back-in-the-groove” with Moose International organizational standards. Let’s keep up the good work … we are family!
The Arlington Fraternity is the Best! Editorial by Willie J. Jamison At the time I joined the Lodge in 2013, I did not realize what an experience I would ultimately have. Since I knew only two members at the time, I reasoned it would be a nice place to relax and escape from the overcrowded bars in Arlington. Soon I realized that I would not, could not unwind in the true sense of the word. As I was immediately drawn into the numerous events at the Lodge which provided me the opportunity to meet new people and experience new adventures in eating, sports, music and the many wonderful opportunities to participate in supporting our community. Kudos for the Lodge/Chapter’s sponsorship of toy drives for Mooseadopted families and the sponsorship of the hugely successful Soldiers Angles benefit and other events. In addition, the food is extraordinary. We have the best cooks and they delight in preparing all sorts of palate-pleasing, mouth watering, belt loosening dishes. The two regular cooks are masters of the grill and they excel in preparing cuisine and consistently win, alternating between first place and 2nd place. However, new emerging grill masters recently stunned the membership with their award winning dishes. A special shout-out to Ray and Norman! They both personify the principles of brotherhood and friendship. Because of their dignity and class, the Lodge as a whole is a better place. I place a smile on my face when I walk-in and they are there. Please tell them you feel the same way.
Flea Market on August 1st (Same day as the Fish Fry Revisited) The Lodge is sponsoring a Flea Market (a.k.a. Yard Sale) with associated event income donated to the WOTM in support of upcoming children activities in October & December! Contact Christina Davies to reserve a table (price reduction for Moose members). The Flea Market will be held inside the Ritual Hall … therefore, the event will occur no matter the weather of the
day. Please support this worthwhile activity!!

Our Initial Efforts to the VMA Lodge Retention Campaign [May 1, 2015 – April 30, 2016] To meet the VMA challenge and possibly receive a monetary award (not to mention for the betterment of our Fraternity), Arlington #1315 has created an
Ad Hoc Retention Committer Chaired by Bernie Cerroni. The initial activity is to send out postcards to those Arlington #1315 members that have had recent expirations in their membership and have not re-enrolled for the current Moose year. But the Committee needs help! There are many past Arlington #1315 members that have dropped their membership over the past several years (reasons unknown) that we somehow need to contact and possibly get them to be interested in being members again. The Arlington Fraternity has made many giant strides over the past few years in improving our physical Lodge building, our cooperation and friendliness between all members in the Fraternity (Lodge and Chapter), and our enjoyment in the increased social and family activities. Spread the word to those members who have left that we have a great Fraternity … and keep our Fraternity in existence for decades to come!!

Lodge Repairs/Replacements
With a considerable amount of efforts of several members behind the scene and the physical work by a contractor, the air conditioning for the entire Lodge building was repaired at the beginning of June ($$$). But after ONE week, the air conditioning failed again! More parts had
to be ordered and it is hoped that air conditioning will again be provided by the time this Newsletter is published. The Arlington Fraternity would like to thank all our members for putting up with the “hot environment” inconvenience while we got “our act together” and the waiting time for the delivery of the various parts before the air conditioning was operational again! Billy Hensley came to the rescue (twice) when ice “built-up” on the coils of the cooling unit within the walk-in refrigerator. The condenser drain pipe (first time) and the coils (second time) had become clogged. Once the ice was melted, Billy performed the appropriate actions … and the walk-in freezer was working again. Thank you Billy Hensley! When it rains, it sometimes pours! The existing ride lawn mover became dysfunctional at the end of May. As the grass was growing high due to the week of rain every day, the LOOM Board of Directors decided to look for another lawn mover to purchase. Lo and behold, a used with extraordinary low hours of operations was available for the taking … and we purchased it ($$$). The Fraternity wants to thank Gregg Cady for “scouting the available movers for sale”, getting a good price for the sale, and picking up the ride lawn mover for the Fraternity. We also want to thank Billy Hensley for making the first test drive of the ride lawn mover to cut down the lawn “jungle” in the backyard … BUT it should be noted that he seemed to have too much enjoyment performing this activity!

The Arlington #1315 Legion Committee Corner The first meeting of the resurrected Arlington #1315 Legion Committee was held on June 11, 2015. As a “try to get everyone” interested in the Legion Degree again, a social atmosphere with complementary food was presented to make attendees familiar with requirements to qualify for the Legion Degree, where the collected annual fees are distributed within
the Moose organization, and the importance of having a Lodge Legion Committee. Mission accomplished … four LOOM members either paid recent past dues, re-enrolled as a former Legion member, or enrolled as a new member (one battle at a time, but eventually a war can be won). In the next Arlington #1315 Legion Committee in July 2015, it is planned that an event sponsored by the Arlington #1315 Legion Committee will be determined to raise funds for supporting a need for the Arlington #1315 Moose Lodge. The Arlington Fraternity wants to thank Joyce Chaffins and John Matis for being the chefs, and to Anna & Ralph Phillips for donating the door prize bag to the visiting WOTM members at this Legion Committee meeting. The food offering for the next meeting at Thursday, July 16, 2015 is meatball subs
provided by Chef Tom Oderwald and supporting cast underling John Matis.
Moose Youth Awareness Program Let’s face it, no one is thinking school this time of year … so little effort was concentrated to this program this past month. And us adults always seem to have higher priorities in our lives until “crunch time” is upon us … and then we somehow put everything together. The Governor is getting old and his heart cannot take many more anxiety situations; so we need to change
the fraternity’s personality and establish the program in advance (What?) Besides the necessary announcements to the schools about this program to obtain participation, we need volunteers to provide sample presentations and ideas for the participants at the Association Student Congress at our Fraternity. Please, please, please … the fraternity needs members to assist in making this program successful. We need ideas! We need volunteers! We cannot wait until the end of summer … we need to do something
NOW!

The purpose of this degree is to band together the loyal and devoted Moose members who desire to make further contributions to the humanitarian objectives of our Order while providing fun and entertaining activities for members and their families. Please consider joining the Second Degree (if you qualify)
Why Pay an Additional $15 per Year to Join the Moose Legion? The monies provided by the annual fee for the Moose Legion are distributed between the following worthwhile causes: Moosehaven Operations for Seniors ($2.25), Moosehaven Medical Fund (($2.50), Operations of Camp Ross for our Mooseheart students ($0.50), International Moose Legion Operations ($3.25), International Moose Legion Annual Project ($1.75), Youth Awareness Scholarships ($0.50), and additional projects sponsored by the Virginia Moose Association ($4.25). Everything does to the Moose Fraternity’s main support of Mooseheart, Moosehaven, and our communities!
A Moose member who elevates his membership to the Degree of Service does so out of love for and dedication to the fraternity. He places the needs of his lodge, District, State or Province, and the Fraternity ahead of personal desire for recognition or advancement … he steps forward, pays his fee and dues, and proudly announces … “I’m a part of the future, use me to advance the cause of children and seniors”!
