Jen Young Senior School Principal
As a new member of the Lowanna community, I feel very fortunate to work with our students, staff and parents. I have been very impressed with the dedication of our students to do their best, the professionalism of our staff and the opportunities and processes in place to facilitate learning. Every day we are having conversations about how we can improve our practice.
Last week I spoke to our senior students about the concept of having a Growth Mindset. We are reiterating to our students that effort and hard work, over time, are the ingredients to achieve their goals. Students are encouraged to seek feedback as an opportunity to move forward, to embrace the challenges their teachers provide them with, and not be discouraged by failures (we all have them!) .
Our School Captains this year are (pictured above) Rachel Sultana, Amy Hardy, Kobie Taylor and Jacob Wright. I congratulate these Year 12 students for putting themselves forward to perform this role and represent our school. I would also like to welcome Year 11 student, Rita Numeroli, who is joining us from Italy this year. Benvenuto a Lowanna Rita.
I am proud to be a puzzle-piece at Lowanna College, and part of a school that continues to strive for excellence in all that we do. I look forward to a year of learning for our students, our staff and for myself personally. I would love to meet more parents and carers and invite you to come in any time to discuss how we can all help our students succeed.

Principal’s ReportWelcome back
It is with great pleasure that I welcome back all staff and students to the 2016 School year. I would particularly like to welcome all new members of the school community. Our start to the year has been remarkably smooth and we are confident that many of our school improvement initiative are really starting to take traction and we are confident of further improvement in student outcomes in 2016 and beyond.
School Council Election
As is the case each year members of the parent community and staff are invited to nominate for positions on school council. The College is also able to nominate community members to fill some positions on council. In 2016 we have 4 parent vacancies and 3 staff vacancies to fill. I encourage any interested parent to contact me should they want more information about school council and what it requires. Student Numbers
Preliminary numbers that were submitted to the department on day 1 of the school year were 999 students. This is slightly higher than expected but may fluctuate either way over the coming weeks.
Staffing Update
The holidays produced a couple of surprises and we have implemented some staffing changes to enable us to cover all of our classes. Due to Betina Flake taking some leave we have had to advertise for a Humanities/English/Careers teacher. Craig Sobott has kindly stepped into the breach to help us out in the meantime.
We also welcome to staff Daniel Maydas who will be teaching Science, Norman Trewin (English/Humanities) and Kristy Bannister (Food Technology). Grace Sharon has joined the College as our new Chaplain and we warmly welcome her.
Uniform
The new polo tops and jackets are due to arrive at Beleza in the very near future. We will advise parents via Facebook, Compass and Lowanna News as soon as we have confirmed dates.
Behaviour Norms
We have introduced this year a set of behaviour norms that we expect all in our community to adhere to. They are based on the value of mutual respect and tolerance. We have separate behaviour norms for students, staff and parents. I have included them with this newsletter.
Hoax Phone calls
Dear Parent,
I am writing to reassure you in light of the recent hoax threatening phone calls to Victorian schools in the last few days.
Our school has not received such a call but I wanted to inform you that, like all schools, we have an emergency management plan in place for situations like this, and we practice it throughout the year.
Those schools, which did receive a threatening call, enacted their emergency management plans and they worked well.
The safety and wellbeing of our students is always our top priority.
If you have any questions please contact me.
Kind Regards,
Brett Windsor
Schedule 4: Notice of Election and Call for Nominations An election is to be conducted for members of the School Council of Lowanna College
Nomination forms may be obtained from the school and must be lodged by 4pm on 22 February 2016.
The ballot will close at 4.00 pm on 22 February 2016.
Following the closing of nominations a list of the nominations received will be posted at the school. The terms of membership categories and number of positions in each membership category open for election are as follows:
Parent member (x 4 positions) From the day after the date of the declaration of the poll in 2016 to and inclusive of the date of the declaration of the poll in 2018.
DET employee member (x 3 positions) From the day after the date of the declaration of the poll in 2016 to and inclusive of the date of the declaration of the poll in 2018.
If the number of nominations is less than the number of vacancies, a notice to that effect and calling for further nominations will be posted in a prominent position at the school.
Brett Windsor, Principal
Important InformationPlease note the following information regarding the planned arrangements for the College Swimming Carnival, scheduled for Thursday 11 February at the Latrobe Leisure Outdoor Pool in Vale Street, Moe.
As a whole school event, all students are expected to be in attendance. As such, no classes will be running on this day.
Following Home Group meetings in the morning and student attendance being recorded, students will be bussed to the Outdoor Pool at approximately 9am. Upon conclusion of the carnival, students will be bussed back to the College at approximately 2:30pm. Should you prefer for your child to leave for home directly from the Outdoor Pool, please provide a written note permitting this to occur.
In the event of bad weather forcing the cancellation of the Swimming Carnival, normal classes will run and the Carnival will be rescheduled.
If you have any questions about the above, please contact the College on (03) 5127 9200.
