LOVE IN THAI’S PERSPECTIVE Ummul Khoiriyah/112154017

Almost all of us are interesting to the term of love, whatever that is, especially if we are

young . People will always be brought to a different atmosphere spreading when they are

in love. Love is a feeling we are aware of once we start knowing and giving affection

for someone special. Love is broad and infinite; it can be relationship between parents –

children, boys – girls, or even teachers – students. The one that will be illuminated here

is the second part, love in the relationship of boys – girls. There are many stories of love

around the world that have been packaged in form of movie. The movie absolutely

shows how love works through human relation. It has been proved by the existence of

two Thai’s movies that deliver diverge stories of diverge individuals in the same

concern of love, “A Little Thing Called Love” and “First Kiss”.

A Little Thing Called Love (2010) tells how a girl named  Nam attracts a boy named

Shone whom she falls in love with. Shone is Nam’s senior in school she admires at the

first sight. Nam is recognized as an ordinary, cheerful and kind-hearted girl, though she

is not beautiful enough making boys being attracted. Meanwhile,  First Kiss (2012)

shows us how a girl in her 26th named Sa falls in love with a boy of 18th named Bass.

Both meet in a buss, they kiss each other accidentally at the first time. At the past, Sa

had the one she loves much, Ohm, but Ohm is on marriage with another girl. In the end,

Sa is aware of her feeling toward Bass that sincerely loves her. Eventhough “A Little

Thing Called Love” and “First Kiss” are produced in different years and different

stories, actually there are three similarities appear.

First, men in both  A Little Thing Called Love and  First Kiss have characters that are

equal. Character becomes one of important elements in a story. “Characters are the life

of literature: they are the objects of our curiosity and fascination, affection and dislike,

admiration and condemnation” (Bennet & Royle, 2004: 73). Shone and Bass are

actually in love once they meet Nam or Sa, they do not show it directly. They wait for

the good time confessing their own feeling. There is also problem available when they

do confess their feeling in the end. They have to go far from Thailand in order to

arrange their future. It will be difficult for them getting a relationship limited by the

distance. Both Shone and Bass are depicted as mature men, although they are in their

adolescent. It is influenced by the environment they live in. Shone lives with parents

who teach him to be independent – he is forced by his father to be a good football player

though he has a trauma; Bass lives with a father who does not give him affection  –

always leaves him  – he has to live life by himself. Here, they also face a phase when

they have to be patient of waiting when Nam and Sa are in relationship with other boys.

Ohm tries to attract Sa and she achieves it; Mario confesses his love toward Nam and

she accepts it. After 3 years, Shone and Bass are seemingly confident to face Nam and

Sa by success they have got; it means they want to show their ability of doing and show

their preparation of seriousness.

Second, the women characters in both movies are equal. “ Benedek (1979) argued that:

1.  Girls are more social than boys.

2.  Girls are easy to be influenced.

3.  Girls have lower self-esteem.

4.  Girls are easier to learn simpler role and task.

5.   Boys are more analytic.

6.  Girls are influenced by talent; boys are influenced by environment.

7.  Girls do not tend to have achievement.

8.  Girls tend to listen more; boys tend to see more” (Sarwono, 2011: 104-105).

Those explanations absolutely show how women in the movies act toward other

characters. Nam and Sa can be easier provoked by their friends when they think of

Shone or  Bass. They will listen to everyone else’s statements more than analyze the

problem first. They are seemingly immature. Though Sa is in her work age and Nam is

in her school age, they will not think of their own future when they are in love; they will

only think how to get the attention of boys they love. Nam and Sa will get awareness to

focus on their own dreams if the boys leave them. Soon, they can move on and build up

their better personalities, they become more beautiful than before, they also have a

good carrier . In the end, it is told that the girls are late knowing how the boys love them

as much as they do. Although it is too late, still the boys look for them and ask them to

live with.

Third, the stories have the same theme.  A Little Thing Called Love is the story of first

love happens in school and it is continuing until both main boy and girl characters

grown up. First Kiss is the story of love between couple of different ages by an intro of

their first kiss in a buss they go home. We can make a line that both movies want to

emphasize the term of “first love”. Here, Thai can be considered as romantic as they

make those movies work. They believe of “there is always possible relationship once a

person meets anyone else and they stare each other”. Thai show us how precious love is.

In conclusion, both movies “A Little Thing Called Love” and “First Kiss” are equal,

although they focus on different terms of love at first sight or kiss at first taste. They

have similarities on men and women’s characters, and theme. Those movies illustrate

how love exists and becomes distinct reality around us as teenagers. People may see

love from many different aspects, but Thai appreciate kind of “first” “love” which

contains of impression and sincerity at the first time of meeting “that” someone special.
