The proffer from Parish Pastoral Council President Edmund Lim to chair the Santuario de San Antonio Parish (SSAP) Fiesta 2017 was unexpected. A surprise that aroused some trepidation which slowly rose to excitement. Having served previously as Vice-Chair of the Forbes Park Association Environment Committee when it was first established, in various capacities at the Concerned Women of the Philippines and the Catholic Women’s League, and as member of the many other ministries and organizations in the church and village, this was an opportunity to serve our beloved Santuario de San Antonio and parish families in a greater capacity.

Considering that we in Forbes Park, Dasmarinas, Kasiyahan,

Manila Polo, Urdaneta, and the Ayala condominiums are bound in one parish, our coming fiesta bodes everything wonderful and fun for our families. A time of convivial camaraderie and fraternity among neighbors of similar aspirations and persuasions.

Dear co-parishioners, we love our Santuario de San Antonio and our priests. Let this be our shared success comes June 13! Let us get involved with full hearts! To God be the glory!!

Promoting Collective Leadership: The Ministries

Pope francis made a surprise appearance last April at the tED 2017 conference with the theme, “the future is you.” “People’s paths are riddled with suffering,” he shared, “as everything is centered around money and things, instead of people.”

Many of us are convinced that it is not possible to have a happy future. the holy father said that “the future is made of you’s …because life flows through our relationships with others...life is about interactions. ...We all need each other. none of us is an island, an autonomous and independent i, separated from the other; and we can only build the future by standing together, and including everyone into our society.”

Pope francis remarked that for us, christians, “the future does have a name; and its name is Hope. A single individual is enough for hope to exist, and that individual can be you. And then there will be another you, and another you, and many you’s together will turn to an us. And so, does hope begin when we have an us? no. hope begins with one you. When there is an us, the combined hopes begin a revolution.”

he then suggested that we need a “revolution in tenderness.” tenderness is to show concrete love. it means we use our eyes to see and ears to listen to “the children, the poor, those who are afraid of the future.” it means “to use our hands and our hearts to comfort the others, to take care of those in need.” tenderness

is also to be humble, “to be on the same level as the other. God himself descended into Jesus to be on our level” to practice the concrete language of love. The Pontiff reminded those in power to act humbly as “the more powerful you are, the more your actions will have an impact on people.”

“the future of humankind is not exclusively in the hands of politicians, of great leaders, of big companies” although they hold an enormous responsibility, the Pope explained. the future is, most of all, in the hands of those people who can recognize “the other is not a statistic or a number” but “has a face” and “is a person to take care of”, and with those people, we can build the future together. “We all have to help each other.”

his holiness urged us, “We have so much to do; and we must do it together.”

Promoting Collective Leadership: The Ministries

SOCial SErViCES MiniStrY“We are truly blessed to have a Prison Ministry in our parish at ssAP. i believe in my heart that this ministry has the power to change lives. Just speaking for myself, if i were to put into words the transformation that the ministry has effected in my life, i would say it would be nothing short of a miracle. to see where i am today, as compared to where i was 5 years ago, would be unthinkable. Up to now, i still surprise myself with what i say or do, which sometimes feels surreal. it all depends on how much you put into it, and most certainly it will be the same amount you will get from it, “with interest” as fr. reu would so inspiringly remind us.

it is under this premise that when i was given a chance to co-chair this ministry, it has been my ardent wish to share the blessing that this ministry has to offer to as many parishioners as possible. To make known and have everyone realize the power and the influence this ministry can put into each of our lives. We simply need to open ourselves to it.

it is as if we all have a personalized treasure chest made specially for each one of us just waiting to be discovered. Unearthing these jewels means that each volunteer should be given a chance to experience first hand the presence of God in the being of the Person Deprived of Liberty (PDL). And this can only happen through a close, one to one interaction with the PDLs. this is our take on collective leadership. We lead only in as far as giving direction and then open up opportunities for parishioners to do exactly

what the so-called “leaders” are doing. We follow how Jesus Himself instructed all of us to serve, humbly and meekly, not owning up to anything that the ministry itself owns, but simply being a steward for what the ministry has to offer. hopefully, this way each one of us will find their way towards unearthing the treasure which God has prepared for each of us.” – RJ Limpo, Prison Ministry

“running the PGh hospital Ministry is certainly no picnic, given the complexity of our operations and the numerous people involved. While the task and responsibility are enormous, i truly believe that all our concerns and objectives continue to be met miraculously with much Divine intervention. We are gifted with the best team possible, with members who have the purest of intentions to serve genuinely our ministry. As such, we are able to function as one in meeting our primary goal, which is to express our love for God in loving service to the mission of our ministry. Each and every board member, donor, volunteer and staff has different ways of expressing their desire to work for this objective, which is given much respect, appreciation and encouragement.

We are a ministry geared towards establishing an environment for all concerned to flourish by banking on each other’s strength and uplifting each other, to bring out each other’s best. As each and every person is accounted for as an integral part of the ministry, our decision-making practices are always focused on how we may “best” serve our ministry in the most effective and efficient manner, always

extending the purest of intentions, much love and compassion for all concerned.

to sum it all up, i believe that our ministry is truly gifted with the smooth operations despite occasional setbacks as it is fueled with the undeniable love of all for our Lord by working on our ministry as a form of prayer.” – Ella Tan, Hospital Ministry

“God’s all-enveloping grace has enabled the SSAP Scholarship Ministry not only to endure but also to thrive these past twenty years as it continues to provide promising but disadvantaged youth with the education and Christian values they need for a better future.

it was a seed planted, and with the continuing commitment, the loving care and nurturing of the Pastoral team, the continuing support of generous parishioners, the commitment and dedicated hard work of volunteer members and pastoral workers, it continues to bloom and bear fruit year after year.

Envisioning how we could help our scholars and in turn have them also give back something of themselves, we have also ourselves been enabled to share whatever time, talent and treasure we have, within the context of each one’s capabilities and what we are able to afford, working within the parameters and sometimes the confines of our limitations.

As workers in the Lord’s vineyard, all of us at different stages of our lives, with different backgrounds, temperaments, and capabilities, are all united in prayer, sharing a strong common denominator of commitment, wanting to help and driven to do what we can for our applicant young men and women. it is in the acceptance of each other and what each one has to offer, the affirmation of the talents each one can contribute, the acknowledgement that we are not perfect and in knowing we cannot do it alone, that we all come together.

The Holy Spirit is the consummate conductor, able to draw out the passion and commitment from each one and together is able to orchestrate beautiful music. ALL for his GrEAtEr GLory.” – Mariza del Rosario, Scholarship Ministry

“the Livelihood Ministry is faced with the challenge of sustained earnings for the livelihood of the mothers for their families. i pray the situation they are in does not overwhelm them to give up community life and their livelihood endeavors.

to address the above concerns, the Secular Franciscans with God’s guidance and lead, have journeyed and administered the St. Francis Friendship Home Livelihood & spirituality center not just to be a place to earn a living and/or for socials but also a center where the mothers and children

Collective Leadership... from page 3are brought nearer to God and can help one another grow in their Christian Faith. We have made them realize that there is a purpose of staying together as a community --- that is to encourage one another and to give support in times of need and trials. They have realized that they cannot function alone but alongside other members and in the friendship home, their fears, their hopes, their aims, their comforts and cares are one with the Church and the Santuario de san Antonio Parish foundation, in Jesus’ name.” – Tina Teehankee, Friendship Home and Livelihood Ministry

“Visiting the sick is a corporal work of mercy. We constantly remind and invite our members of the hospital visits, which is a major focus of our ministry. i try to lead by example and live according to Christ’s ideal of leadership, which is service to others.” – Barbie Lu-Young, Health Care Ministry

WOrShiP MiniStriES“collective Leadership means everyone takes responsibility for the success of the organization, as a whole, not only for each one’s individual job.

in the Lectors and commentators Ministry, we soon realized that we are only one tiny section of a bigger organization where an inclusive approach to leadership is already in place: Members cross boundaries of all types - age, experience, profession, artistry, talent, family history, idiosyncrasies, and culture - all committed to learning on the job, sharing responsibility and being mutually accountable.

Are there challenges? Plenty. Bring in frustrations and disappointments, too. But nothing that cannot be resolved with a sincere heart if we recall why we signed up in the first place: “to be readers and bearers of God’s word in the celebration of the holy Eucharist.” this means the ego is left behind, willingly and quietly.“ - Letty Lopez, LECOM

“the Altar Environment Ministry truly espouses the spirit of collective leadership. Each one of our members is always ready to step in and take leadership of the task at hand, whether it’s the regular weekly changing of the altar linens or the special church and altar setups for feast days and special events of our parish, or finding sponsors for Holy Week and for our Belen and Christmas altar decor. While one or two may be taking the lead in any of these tasks,

we all recognize that by working together, we are also serving our Lord as one.” – Wilma Huang, Altar Environment Ministry

FaMilY anD liFE MiniStrY“the main challenge in the family and Life Ministry is how to progress in its programs and activities since there are many different branches that form the office; how to bridge the vision and plans of our Parish Priest and PPC to its members and succeed in the spiritual work of service.

Mainly, we take cue from our Parish Priest and PPC leaders to help us focus on which direction to take. By doing so, our members discuss ideas and suggestions on how to proceed and implement the aforesaid.” - Jaime Blanco, Family and Life Ministry

EDuCatiOn MiniStrY“continuing catholic Development (ccD) is faced with the challenge of keeping its Catechism classes engaging in order to keep children aged 5-14 interested in learning about the catholic faith. our teachers realize that teaching styles and approaches have to be flexible depending on the class’ age group, background and even gender distribution to be effective.

to address the challenges, ccD conducts teachers’ workshops at the beginning of each school year to empower and guide its teachers on the latest teaching strategies to keep their students engaged. for example, as a teaching method, ccD has recently adopted brain-based learning, which stems from understanding how the brain works, learns and responds, depending on a child’s age, gender, emotional state and maturity. With this tool, ccD teachers are able to take responsibility for their own classes as they adjust their teaching methods and styles depending on the unique and dynamic needs of each class.” - Katty Qua, Continuing Catholic Development (CCD)

YOuth MiniStrY“the challenge of our ministry has always been how to help people go deeper into their own faiths. this includes understanding it, and carrying out our Faith day by day. We overcome this challenge by knowing that each one of us is on his own journey of faith, and therefore everyone can be the helping hand that someone needs along the road. We know that each person in our community is God-sent and has something to offer, when on the journey towards God.” – Manuel Singson, Antioch
