How have the highway system and advances in communication technology changed the culture of the United States?

Superhighway Vacation

• Using the “Electronic Superhighway,” students will select a vacation destination based on a predetermined budget issued to each group

• Employing Mapquest or similar technology, students will design a route for their trip with certain mathematical specifications-distance will be calculated-cost will be estimated depending on current gas

prices-time will be determined

Activities

• In selecting their destinations, students will be required to visit two historical sites and two places of interest to them-entrance fees will be researched

• Available lodging will be reserved along the way• Cost of meals for the entire traveling party will be

estimated• Funds will be appropriated for souvenirs and

miscellaneous expenses• Final budget will be determined to ascertain if the

trip is feasible

Student Product

• The student product will be a booklet that includes all assigned components of trip planning.

• Play the video version of the “Electronic Superhighway” located on the scholar site

• Allow students 3-5 min to complete the graphic organizer or Art Analysis – Observations (Facts- what do you see) then share with a partner

• Allow students 3-5 min to complete the section on Interpretations (Opinions – What do you think or feel?) then share

Writing Prompt

• Essential Question -

• Do the images that Paik selected still represent America in 2009? Is his art still current? Include the elements of art (lines, shape/form, color, value, texture, size and quantity. Also include the images in Louisiana and two additional states to support your point of view

Student Products

• Students create podcasts representing their interpretations to post on the teacher’s eboard or class website.

• Write a letter to the artist – Posing Questions and sharing their interpretations

• Create a collage with one new image for each state

• Write a poem or song to respond to art
