In or- der to take the "mystery" out of radio- when not addressing a body of engineers- it is the writer's custom to use the sim- plest terms possible. And, therefore, in describing the D-17 circuit in the space available, he will attempt to avoid a tech- nical dissertation. Most "fans" are ac- quainted, with the terms used and the functions of the various parts. The De Forrest D-17 is an entirely self- contained 5 -tube receiving set, designed for loop reception, with a wave length range of 220 to 550 meters. From the schematic diagram it will be seen that the circuit consists of two stages of tuned radio frequency amplification, one stage of untuned or "transformer coupled" radio frequency amplification, and two stages of audio frequency amplifi- and two stages of audio freqency amplifi- cation, the first of which is reflexed through the third radio frequency tube. The incoming signal is intercepted by the loop which is inserted in the jack, or by the antenna under circumstances which will be referred to' later. The special folding loop has sixteen turns. A switch is provided to cut out five turns for effi- cient reception of wave lengths below 400 meters. The .0005 mfd. variable condenser tunes the loop and the grid or input of the first radio frequency tube. The am- plified energyepaeses through the primary of the tuned radio frequency transformer and is transferred by electromagnetic in- duction to the secondary winding, which is tuned by the .0005 mfd. variable con- denser, whence it is impressed on the grid of the second radio frequency tube. The further amplified energy now passes to the primary of the fixed or untuned radio frequency transformer, and is transferred by induction to the secondary coil, whence it is impressed on the grid of the third tube. The still further amplified energy is passed on through fixed transformer to the detector tube, where it is rectified or changed ipte ,an audio frequency cur- rent. The audio frequency energy now passes to the primary of audio frequency transformer (which is of 5-1 ratio), and is transferred by induction to the seconda- ry, whence it is applied to the grid of the third tube by flowing through the sec- ondary winding of fixed transformer. Third Tube Reflexed. It will now be seen that this third tube is the "reflexed" tube which acts as both the third radio frequency and the first audio frequency amplifier. From the plate or output of tube the amplified cur- rent flows through the primary winding of the second fixed transformer to the primary of the second audio frequency transformer (which is of 3.5-1 ratio), thence by induction to the secondary and on to the grid of the fifth tube, which is the second audio frequency amplifier. From the output of tube th_ greatly am- plified current passes to the built-in loud speaker, where it is converted into an audible signal of great volume. It will be noted that a jack is provided at this point for the use of headphones or an external loud speaker, the internal loud speaker being automatically cut out of the circuit on insertion of a phone plug. By-pass condensers of .0001 mfd. capacity are shunted across the primary and sec- ondary of A. F. transformer, and the secondary of A. F. transformer. The copper shield around the'tuned radio frequency transformer, the cores of the two audio frequency transformers and the frame of the loud speaker are grounded to the shield of the set. It will be noted, however, that a fixed resistance with a movable "juniper" is placed in the filament circuit of the detector tube The purpose of this resistance is to permit the use of a De Forest DV -3 dry cell tube as a detector when using De Forest DV -2 storage battery tubes as ait:plifiers. If DV -2 tubes or DV -3 tubes, as the case may be, are used in all five sockets, the "jumper" is swing around to make contact with two binding posts, thus short-circuit- ing the resistance. This little "jumper" is conveniently located at the right of the detector tube just behind the panel, and can quickly and easily be adjusted to the required position without the use of tools. In or-der to take the "mystery" out of radio-when not addressing a body of engineers-it is the writer's custom to use the sim-plest terms possible. And, therefore, indescribing the D-17 circuit in the spaceavailable, he will attempt to avoid a tech-nical dissertation. Most "fans" are ac-quainted, with the terms used and thefunctions of the various parts.

The De Forrest D-17 is an entirely self-contained 5 -tube receiving set, designedfor loop reception, with a wave lengthrange of 220 to 550 meters.

From the schematic diagram it will beseen that the circuit consists of two stagesof tuned radio frequency amplification,one stage of untuned or "transformercoupled" radio frequency amplification,and two stages of audio frequency amplifi-and two stages of audio freqency amplifi-cation, the first of which is reflexedthrough the third radio frequency tube.

The incoming signal is intercepted bythe loop which is inserted in the jack, orby the antenna under circumstances whichwill be referred to' later. The specialfolding loop has sixteen turns. A switch isprovided to cut out five turns for effi-cient reception of wave lengths below 400meters. The .0005 mfd. variable condensertunes the loop and the grid or input ofthe first radio frequency tube. The am-plified energyepaeses through the primaryof the tuned radio frequency transformerand is transferred by electromagnetic in-duction to the secondary winding, whichis tuned by the .0005 mfd. variable con-denser, whence it is impressed on the gridof the second radio frequency tube. The still further amplified energyis passed on through fixed transformerto the detector tube, where it is rectifiedor changed ipte ,an audio frequency cur-rent. The audio frequency energy nowpasses to the primary of audio frequency

transformer (which is of 5-1 ratio), andis transferred by induction to the seconda-ry, whence it is applied to the grid of thethird tube by flowing through the sec-ondary winding of fixed transformer.

Third Tube Reflexed.It will now be seen that this third tube

is the "reflexed" tube which acts as boththe third radio frequency and the firstaudio frequency amplifier. From theplate or output of tube the amplified cur-rent flows through the primary windingof the second fixed transformer to theprimary of the second audio frequencytransformer (which is of 3.5-1 ratio),thence by induction to the secondary andon to the grid of the fifth tube, which isthe second audio frequency amplifier.From the output of tube th_ greatly am-plified current passes to the built-in loudspeaker, where it is converted into anaudible signal of great volume.

It will be noted that a jack is providedat this point for the use of headphones oran external loud speaker, the internalloud speaker being automatically cut outof the circuit on insertion of a phone plug.By-pass condensers of .0001 mfd. capacityare shunted across the primary and sec-ondary of A. F. transformer, and thesecondary of A. F. transformer.

The four amplifier tubes are located tothe rear of the detector tube, all socketsbeing amplycnshioned. While the diagramshows the radio .frequency tubes at theleft, in the manufactured set the firstright hand tube is the first R. F. tube, thesecond is the second R. F. tube, the thirdis the reflexed tube, and the fourth or left-hand tube is the second audio tube.

The shielded tuned R. F. transformer islocated to the rear of the set, the twofixed transformers on a hakelite sub -base-which also contains the loop jack-between the detector and amplifier tubes,and the A. F. transformer are immedi-ately below the cushioned sub -base whichsupports the detector tube.

The built-in loud speaker will be foundat the rear of the set, the unit being soplaced that adjustment of the diaphragmis easily and quickly effected by turninga small lever. A wooden projector of spe-cial design carries true reproduction ofthe sounds transmitted from the stationwith ample volume to the listeners throughan artistic grill just below the panel.

Two battery compartments are provided,the left hand one being for the speciallydesigned storage battery, or regular drycells, and the right hand one for the 90volts of "B" battery. Four heavy duty22% volt units, of the order of No. 2,158Burgess, are recommended :as being the

most economical. Three of fiibatteriesare placed vertically in the compartmentand the fourth horizontally bn'.top of theother three.

Layout Compact.

The whole Iayout is wonderfully com-pact, and the workmanship and efficiencyof the set are unexcelled. The De ForestD-17 Radiophone is extremely sensitiveand selective, and easy to operate. Thetwo tuning pointers. which are actuatedby friction drive reduction gearing, giverazor -edge control and can be logged.

Although the De Forest D-17 is designedfor efficient loop reception under all nor-mal conditions, there are occasions onwhich an external antenna and ground, inaddition to the loop, may be used withadvantage. This applies chiefly to thosecases where the receiver is located in ashielded building, or when Brother DXHound wants extreme distance on the loudspeaker.

The first step in tuning the D-17 is toset the filament pointer. When usingDV -2 (storage battery type) tubes as am-plifiers, turn filament pointer to approx-imately nine. When using DV -3 tubes asamplifiers turn filament pointer to ap-proximately three.

When this pointer is once set-for sayan evening's use-leave it alone, as it isnot intended to be used for tuning. Onsucceeding evenings you may, however,have to use it in a slightly advanced posi-tion, due to the batteries running downthrough use.

' A "rough and ready" way to tune instrong local stations is to next set thesensitivity pointer at about five, then usingbotie hands, move the amplifier and re-ceiver tuning pointers back and forth untila station is heard, after which the sensi-tivity pointer as well as the two tuningpointers should each be adjusted one wayor the other to get best results:

In reaching out for weaker more distantstations, or picking out a particular one,much more care and patience is required.First, set the sensitivity pointer at aboutsix or seven. Now-with the left handswing amplifier pointer back and forthfrom zero to twenty, while at the sametime the receiver pointer is being steadilybut very slowly moved from zero totwenty with the right hand.

If while doing this you hear a bird -likechirp or whistle, you will know that youare on the "carrier wave" of a broadcast-ing station. This whistle rises and fallsin pitch as you slowly swing the pointersand is thus easily distinguished from other

sounds.

When you first pick up the chirpingsound, stop moving the receiver pointer.

If no carrier wave is picked up duringthis procedure in moving the receiverpointer from zero to twenty, the re-mainder of the sca a should be explored.Do this by moving the receiver pointersteadily but very slowly to the right withthe right hand, while swinging the am-plifier pointer back and forth ten orfifteen points to either side of a pointcorresponding to the position of the re-ceiver- pointer.

After receiver pointer has passed forty-five and into the range of the higherwave lengths, the sensitivity pointershould be turned clear over to "Max."When you leave one station and startsearching for another, do not forget torestore the sensitivity pointer to the

roper starting point.

IT would be a good move for theexperimenter to construct ashort wave receiver, because

with such stations as KDKA, WGY,KFKX add the Radio Corporation'sspecial station at Belfast, Me., trans-mitting on short waves, there isbound to be some fascination In pick-ing them up on the lower waves.

The radio fan who is acquaintedwith the 'code can also experience thethrill of picking up some amateurtransmitting from a great distance.It has been said -that short waveswill travel a greater distance thanthe higher waves, making it quiteinteresting to -experiment with sucha receiver to really determine whethersuckle the case.

One obstacle must be overcome toinsure good reception on the lowerwaves, and that is to do away withthe static that becomes much moreannoying at this point than whilelistening in to high wave stations.In the event of many more broad-casting stations being pressed intoservice, it is probable that they willbe -assigned low wave lengths andthereby making the short wave re-ceiver essential.

Good DX.One glance at the many DX rec-

ords received by the Loud Speakerduring the last few week& will readilyconvince one that the distant sta-tions are coming through in goodshape.

Many writers claim that they areable to tune In all sorts of stationswhile the locals are on. making itappear that Static has not yet begunto reign.

Takes Exception."I read in your issue of March 28

where A. Fringes took J. B. Green-man to task for recommending a si-lent night, and advocated instead thebuilding of a super set like his.Now don't you think it is about timeyou established a censorship in yourcolumn? To quote A. Fringes, hereceives the following stations be-tween the hours of 7 and 11 P. M.while the locals are going full blaston the loud speaker: WOS, transmit-ting on a wave length of 441 meterswhile- WJZ la on, fourteen metersapart; CNRO, 435 meters, whileWJZ, 455, is on, twenty metersapart; WLW, 422 meters, whileWJY is on. seventeen meters apart.

"The seasoned radio fan knows thisis bunk, and that while it la possibleto penetrate through the lower wavelengths, where a point on the dialswill kill a station, it is next to im-possible to penetrate through thehigher wave lengths, where it takesfive to eight points on the dial

"The prime purpose of this letteris to advocate a silent night I havea log of fifty-three stations, also of-ficial confirmation of PTT, Madrid,Spain, which I don't believe to beauthentic myself, as I believe Iheard CYL; Mexico city, instead.

"I hope this letter finds its wayinto the columns of the Loud Speak-er, as I am beginning to believe thatradio is getting to be in a class withfishing."

Static Eliminator."Please don't intdrpret this as a

boost for QBT, but in regard to yourrequest for anti,static devices I wishto call your attention to the Febru-ary and March issues of QST,wherein are described the McCaaanti -static devices, which seem to bethe best attempts so far. In caseyou haven't read these issues, thestatic preventers are in the form of avacuum tube repeater, which limitsthe loudest crashes to the same au-dibility as the signal. Although asignal static ratio does not soundvery promising, it is in reality farsuperior to any present '-- 'staticprovention method.

"The device works best on a non -regenerative radio frequency re-ceiver, which ought to make themvery popular, and, in addition, iseasily constructed and compact. Anassembled preventer greatly resem-bles a stage of tuned R. F. in ap-pearance, with no cumbrous loops.

"It seems that every one is in-terested in short waves these days,so I will give my experiences withsame, In November, 1923, I built myfirst low loss short wave set, nearlysix months before the present lowloss craze began. During the ama-teur transatlantic tests I was réwarded by hearing one Britisher,2NM, on this set.

"My present set consists of thefollowing: An. eleven turn secondaryof No. 16 D. C. wire, prirtiary of oneand three-quarter turns No. 12 wireand a tickler of ten turns No. 20 D.C. wire. The secondary is tunedwith a .00025 Bremer -Tully conden-ser, giving a range of about 44 to130 meters. Although the set is sen-sitive, which is proven by the factthat I repeatedly hear Sixth Districtamateurs, station KDKA comes inon sixty-three meters, but withoutloud speaker volume. Still they comethrough with remarkable steadiness,day or night, and r ith only one stepof audio frequent.:, will comfortablyfill a small room.

"A hundred foot antenna is usedand several different methods of con-necting it have been tried. First a

one and three-quarter turn primaryabout two inches from the secondaryin a regular Ambassador type cir-cuit; second, a single circuit, withthe capacity between the grid andground omitted. This method ispractical only when the battery leadsare very short and the set well re-movc:l, from radiators and waterpipes, otherwise` the receiver willfail. to oscillate, . the capacity to theground being too great. In this thirdcase the capacity of the batteries tothe ground acts as a ground seriescondenser.

"Another interesting feature ofshort wave experimentation is thatthe aerial and ground don't have tobe connected to the set, but onlyplaced in the vicinity, because atsuch great frequencies the currentbridges extremely minute capacitieswith ease.

"In a test, while 6CTO was beingreceived, first the ground and thenthe antenna was removed. The sig-nals were somewhat weakened, butstill remained readable. 6010, bythe way, le either In California orArizona."

On a one tube set he claims tohave picked up KFI, KGO, WBAP,WFAA, KFRU, CNRW, 6KW,KFKX, WCAL, WHB, WDAF, WOS,WHO, WOAW, KFNF, WFAV,KSAC, WOCO, WOL I B,WMBF and WQAM. He has veri-fications from both KGO and KFI.

Using absolutely no aerial, only aground wire ten feet long, he haspicked up the following stations:KOA, KFRtY, KFKX, WMBF, WEB,WDAF, WLS, WEBH, WGN,WBON, WTAS, WCCBD, WJJD,WTAY and WOEE. He thinks thatthis in Itself is a good record. Helay stress on the fact that he coulddo much better work if his set wouldtune above four hundred and thirtymeters without en aeriaL

BE1'TER reception is theone great desire ofevery member of the

large family of radio fans whonightly turn their dials insearch of ether -borne enter-tainment. Better receptionis the allurement that causesthousands of fans to constructone set after another and, afterexperimenting with each onefor a time, dismantle it anduse the parts to build anotherwith which he hopes to ob-tain greater range, increasedselectivity, improved tonequality and perhaps morevolume. These features, com-bined with low original costand a minimum upkeep ex-pense, may be said to char-acterize the perfect radio re-ceiver.

The one to be described here is neitherthe ultimate nor the perfect receiver forwhich a multitude of fans have thus farsought in vain, but it does combine moredesirable features than any other home-made set known to the writer at the pres-ent time. It was developed by WalterVan B. Roberts, of Princeton.

It combines tuned radio frequency withregeneration capacity neutralization andreflexed audio -frequency amplification. Itdoes not radiate howls and squeals, andits tone quality is excellent. It is selec-tive, sensitive and requires but two tubes.Additional tubes may be added for in-creased volume, if desired, but the nucleusof the set consists of the two tubes con-nected as shown in the accompanying dia-grams.

Tube `Does `Double Duty

The first tube functions both as radioand audio frequency amplifier, whereasthe second serves as a detector. To thismay be added push-pull or resistance -coupled amplification. Straight audiofrequency is not recommended. Thehook-up shown herewith, in connectionwith two stages of push-pull amplification,results in an exceedingly efficient four -tube set which is comparatively simpleto construct and which produces volumeequal to many five -tube receivers.

In addition to the above, two smallstrips of wood or insulating material1x6x3-16 inches will be needed for sup-porting the spider -web coils.

Coils especially designed for use in theRoberts receiver are now available on themarket and their use will insure perfectresults; however, constructional detailswill be given for those who wish to windtheir own.

A SIMPLY CONSTRUCTED SET TO WHICH AMPLIFICATION MAY BE ADDED

at least five inches square. Using thearrow point as the center, a circle is drawnoutside having a diameter of five inches.A ruler is then used to draw straight linesextending the spokes outward from the in-ner circle to the outer circumference. Thisdone, the form is cut out with scissors or asafety -razor blade, and the result is aspider -web form five inches in diameterhaving thirteen spokes evenly spaced.This is then used as a pattern for cuttingout four more, equal in size and shape.

The next pro-cedure is to windthe coils. Theprimary at the leftof the drawing iswound first. Itconsists of 40turns of No. 22 d.c. c. wire tappedas follows: 1st-beginning - 2nd,5th, 10th, 20th,30th and 40thturns. This makesseven taps in all,but one-the be-ginning- is usedas a connection tothe coil, thus leav-ing six taps, whichare to be con-nected to as manypoints of the tapswitch. The armof the tap switch serves as the other con-nection to the coil through the taps.

The secondary coil consists of 45 turnsof No. 22 d. c. c. wire. In winding thesecoils, begin at the center and, leavingabout five inches for a connection, wind

under two spokes and over the next two;under two and over two, until the entirecoil is finished.

Before starting the N and P coil, placeeach of the spools of No. 26 green silk andwhite double cotton covered wire overtwo large nails so that the wire will easilyunroll from the spools as the coil is wound.

Leaving about five inches for a connec-tion, the beginning ends are tagged asfollows: White, No. 1; green, No. 2. Bothwires are then wound together on the

form just asthough they wereone single wire.Wind under onespoke and over thenext for twentyturns. This com-pletes the wind-ing. Leave fiveinches for makingconnections andcut the wire fromthe spools. Theends are then la-beled as follows:White, No. 3;green, No. 4. It isimportant to labelthem correctly, ason this coil largelydepends the effi-cient operation ofthe receiver.

After the wiresare fastened in place by giving them anextra twist around the nearest spoke, aninch of white insulation is removed fromthe No. 3 end and the green insulation fromNo. 2 is scraped for a similar distance.These two ends, No. 3 and No. 2, are then

The seéondary coil in thecenter consists of 45 turns ofNo. 22 d. c. c. wire. Thetickler coil is wound with 18turns of No. 22 d. c. c. wire.The secondary and ticklercoils are each wound undertwo and over two spokes.

A support is next con-structed for the coils. Theprimary and secondary arespaced half an inch apart byan adjustable screw. Thisscrew passes through an up-right held in place by a smallblock of wood at the base.Similarly, the N P coil ispermanently fastened half aninch from the secondary, butthe tickler coil must be so ar-ranged that it may be movedbackward or forward.

Making this arrangement is partly leftto the ingenuity of the builder. A studyof the photograph shows the method usedby the writer. The tickler coil is attachedto a hollow sleeve which slides over a screwprojecting from the secondary coil.

The panel is next laid out and the holesdrilled, after which the instruments aremounted following the plan indicated inthe photographs. The primary and sec-ondary must be mounted at right angleswith the N -P, secondary and tickler coils.This is very important. The 7x21 -inchpanel is sufficiently large to allow roomfor a push-pull amplifier to be added later.

The neutralizing condenser may behomemade by sliding a brass sleeve orcopper gasoline tubing over a piece of buswire 3% inches long over which a pieceof spaghetti insulating tubing has beenplaced. There are a number of midgetcondensers on the market which will effi-ciently serve the purpose instead.

Either dry -cell or storage -battery tubesmay be used in this receiver. The writerfound it easier to neutralize the set witha -99 tube in the radio -frequency stage.A 60 -ohm rheostat makes it possible tooperate this tube direct from the 6 -voltsource. A 5 -volt detector tube was used.

Operating Pointers

After the instruments are mounted andproperly connected, the set is then neutral-ized. Place the switch lever on a centertap and the tickler coil as close as possibleto the secondary, then light both tubes.Adjust the variable condensers until thesqueal of a broadcasting station is heard.After tuning in the squeal as loud as pos-sible, move the tickler coil away from thesecondary and adjust the neutralizing con-denser until the squeal vanishes and theincoming signals are clear.

The final adjustments of this receiverinclude experimenting with the variousdetector B battery taps between 16 and 45until the proper voltage is found whichgives best results with the particular tubein use. It is also well to either try varioussizes of fixed grid leaks between 2 and 8megohms or else adjust the resistance ofthe variable leak until the signals are clear.The C battery voltage should be varied.

Accidentally short-circuiting the neu-tralizing condenser places the entire Bbattery voltage across the filaments ofboth tubes. For this reason it is advisableto connect a .001 mfd. fixed condenser inseries with the neutralizing condenser,thereby protecting the tubes from acci-dental burn -out. This is not shown in thehook-up, but it is listed under parts re-quired and is an advisable precaution. Itwill in no way affect the operation of the set.

In some sets it may be necessary toground the negative side of the filamentlead to bring about stability. Excessive

he heard, often calling them on the phoneafter a lecture. He treated his sorghumseed for smut at a cost of five cents abushel and a saving of sixty dollars. Hegot his first stand of alfalfa seeded the'radio way.' His spring pig crop was far-rowed out on clean ground away from oldlots contaminated with roundworms, thebane of his hog business; he fed them abalanced ration, and marketed at the timethe college marketing specialist forecastthe peak price."

MRS.JOHN, so Neighbor Jones re-

ported, sold off her poultry flock, tostart in fresh with certified stock bred forhigh egg production. She enrolled for thetwenty-eight radio extension courses andreceived the printed lectures. Both Johnand Mary studied them, took the exami-nations and received certificates from thefirst college of the air.

Twenty per cent of the Kansas farmershave radios, and nearly all that numberlisten to the college station.

The noonday program, at which a ques-tion box and two short timely talks arefeatured, is considered the most valuableservice. However, the response from thecollege of the air, an evening program, hasbeen almost as great.

Another popular feature is the House-wives' Half Hour-the 3-H program-broadcast in the middle of the forenoon.

The experiment with a rural -school radioprogram appears to college officials as offer-ingthegreatestpossibilitiesof all. Onlyafewdozen of the 10,000 rural schools in thestate

were equipped tohear the ten weeks'program, but fromthis number camesuch universal ap-proval that a greatdeal of interest wasawakened inequipping otherschools. In fact,one county had aradio set in all itsschools last fall.This experiment isbeing watchedclosely by educa-tors.

THE 1926 model re-ceiving sets dis-played at radio shows

throughout the countryduring the past severalmonths bear conclusivetestimony to the fact thatthe " revolutionizing " de-velopments expected bymany, and in anticipationof which countless pur-chases have been put off,have yet to make theirappearance.

This should prove awelcome message to thosewho in the past wanteda radio receiver but de-ferred buying in the beliefthat whatever set they se-lected might lose its valueand utility shortly after-ward through the adventof a new and revolution-izing invention. Theywould then be in the posi-tion of having to operate an out-of-dateset, inadequate to their needs, or else dis-card it and pay out more money for one ofthe newer types incorporating all of thelatest improvements.

But such is not the case. Improvementshave been made, to be sure, but simplicityis the keynote of the newer models. Theprincipal changes which have been madeare largely those of refinement. Single andtwo -dial control receivers had a muchlarger representation at the recent radioshows than ever before. A few were en-tirely without dials. The new cabinets aremore attractively finished and the designsare more elaborate and varied, whereasthe mechanical construction within ismore rugged. Better tone quality, in-creased selectivity and greater ease of op-eration were the talking points stressed bythose in attendance at every booth. It wasalso evident that prices are lower now thanever before.

Simplicity is the Keynote

On every hand it seemed apparent thatmanufacturers have turned their attentionfrom the creation of new circuits to thesimplification and improvement, whereverpossible, of those which already havemade a permanent place for themselvesthrough months of satisfactory results.And with simplification has come thedressing of these new models in cabinetsof pleasing designs which will blend har-moniously with other articles of furniture.

As to circuits, five -tube sets employingvarious forms of tuned radio frequencyseem still to be the most favored by manu-facturers. Some are using resistance -coupled audio -frequency amplification andthis adds an extra tube, making six in all.Otherwise, with few exceptions, there havebeen no outstanding changes in the ma-jority of those offered.

Quality of reproduction has come infor a large share of the attention and ef-forts of manufacturers both of sets andloud -speakers during the past twelvemonths. The public is coming to look forand demand what is destined to become amatter of paramount importance in thefuture-tone quality.

Some cabinets incorporate a built-inloud -speaker and, at the back, room is pro-vided for the necessary batteries or powersupply. Others were offered in unique anddistinctively original creations. Therewere writing -desk console styles, round,square, rectangular and upright types,not to mention those modeled after periodfurniture designs.

There were countless varieties and stylesof loud -speakers. Many manufacturerswho in the past have confined their repro-ducer models to the horn type have this

`radioyear added a cone speaker to their lines.Horn speakers of every conceivable size,shape, dimension and design were in evi-dence, although there seems to be a grad-ual tendency toward the concealed or conetype. However, the transitional period willprobably cover a number of years.

Appearance, however, is more often ofsecondary importance when tone qualityis considered. In the writer's opinion,greater advancement has been made alongthe lines of developing loud -speaker tonequality and naturalness of reproductionthan in any other field of research duringthe past year.

There were many different makes of de-vices designed to dispense with A and Bbatteries. Some were single units. Otherscombined both under the one cover.There were receivers with these devicesmade a component part thereof, and tooperate the set it becomes necessary onlyto attach it to the nearest electric lightsocket and adjust the dials for the desiredsignals.

Many battery eliminators were on view,but the success and satisfaction whicheach type will give could not be ascer-tained by a show -case examination. Theproof of the efficiency of such devices liesin the actual testing, connected to a radioreceiver and the light socket.

e,w Types of Battery Chargers

The representatives of these devices,however, made it clear that the manufac-turers would guarantee satisfactory resultswhen used with any standard type of radioreceiver.

There were many different styles of Abattery chargers. A new type of particular

interest is one which delivers a "tricklecharge." In other words, the battery isbeing charged at a very low rate at alltimes except when it is actually supplyingenergy to the radio set, in which case thecharger is disconnected from the circuit.Low -capacity storage batteries especiallyadapted for use with this charger are nowbeing offered by practically all of the lead-ing battery manufacturers. Both the bat-tery and charger are so small that they canbe put into the usual dry -cell compartmentof any late -model receiver.

There were countless varieties andstyles of accessories. Fancy and plain ver-nier dials, new -f angled antenna insulators,switches, kits of parts, and lead -sheathedantenna wire intended to be buried in theearth outdoors or in the basement and forwhich great claims were made.

One of the leading manufacturers oftubes recently announced a number of newtypes which will fill a long felt need. Oneof particular interest is designed to be usedin the second stage of an audio -frequencyamplifier in place of the usual amplifiertube in order to bring about great ampli-fication with a minimum of distortion.Higher B battery voltages may then beused.

The visitor leaves one of these exhibi-tions with a feeling of assurance that theonly changes which are now taking placein the radio world are those gradual oneswhich characterize the development ofevery scientific achievement that benefitsmankind in direct proportion to the degreeto which it is perfected.

radio receiver employ-ing three tubes or moremakes use of audio -fre-quency amplification. Al-though this seems like abig term, the system itdesignates is really sim-ple in its operation. "Am-plification" is a wordwhich implies increasingor " boosting." The appa-ratus which brings aboutamplification is called an" amplifier." Therefore anaudio -frequency amplifieris a device which increasesthe volume of signals ataudio frequency.

There are two kinds offrequencies -" radio"and "audio." Radio fre-quencyistheterm appliedto frequencies above 10,-000 per second and towhich the human ear does

not respond. Audio frequencies are thosebelow 10,000 to which the ear can respond,after which it transmits the sensationsto the brain and we speak of the result ashearing.

In every amplification system, somemeans must be provided for "coupling"between each tube. In most receiversaudio -frequency transformers are em-ployed. However, this method has itsdisadvantages. Distortion is usually pres-ent to a greater or lesser degree in everytransformer -coupled amplifier.

This article deals with a system thatis not new, but which is rapidly comingagain into popular favor because with itsuse distortion is practically unknown. Itmakes use of two resistances and a fixedcondenser properly connected in place ofeach transformer.

The advantage of this method overtransformer -coupled systems is that thesignals are purer and practically free fromdistortion. The resistance units are in-expensive and easy to obtain. Althoughadditional B batteries are necessary, ifbest results are to be obtained, the oper-ating cost of the set is really not increased,for the B battery current consumption islowered when resistance -coupled amplifi-cation is installed. A 3 or 6 volt C bat-tery at F below L3 in the diagram willprolong B battery life. The amplificationper stage is less than when transformersare used. For this reason three stagesof resistance -coupled amplification willgive approximately the same volume astwo of audio.

Installation is Simple

Those who wish to experiment with thesystem will have little difficulty in givingit a trial for it is only necessary to loosenthe fod transformer binding posts, lift itout of the set and replace it with a con-denser and resistance units of the propersize. The connections are shown in thepicture hook-up accompanying this article.If care is exercised in making the change,a vast improvement in tone quality willresult. It may be used with any typeof receiver except a reflex. It can beconnected to the output of a reflex for in-creased volume, but the resistances can-not be substituted for the transformers.

The plate coupling resister Rl with theisolating condenser Cl and the grid leakLl can be purchased already made up ina compact unit on which the G, P, F andB terminals are indicated to facilitateconnection in place of an audio -frequencytransformer. Likewise the R2, C2 andL2 and the R3, C3 and L3 units can bepurchased ready for installation. Theillustration shows an assembled amplifier

using these units. Vari-able resistances of theproper size may be used,but they will cost more,take up more space andgive no better results.

An entire three -stage amplifier unitmay be purchased completely wired andready for use when the tubes, loud-speaker and batteries are connected. Thisgreatly simplifies the process. Most ofthe, necessary parts, except perhaps theresistances, will be found in the averageexperimenter's shop or laboratory. Theyare as follows: 3 sockets; 3 tubes; 3 plateresistors, R1, R2 and R3 of 100,000 ohmseach; 3 grid resistors, Ll, L2 and L3 of 1,IA and % megohm each, respectively; 3fixed condensers, Cl, C2 and C3 of .006mfd. capacity; 2 fixed condensers C4 andC5 of .002 mfd. capacity; 3 rheostats orone ballast resistor; 2 jacks, one open andone closed circuit; 5 binding posts; 1

baseboard 6x1830% inches; 1 panel 7x18inches-optional.

Ninety volts will operate the system,but an additional 45 -volt B battery isrequired for bestresults. The detec-tor plate voltagealso must be in-creased to a valuesomewhere be-tween 60 and 90 tocompensate for thevoltage drop acrossthe resistance Rl.The proper tap forthe particular de-tector tube in usecan best be deter-mined by experi-mentation.

amplifying tube may beused. A "soft" tube isnot suitable as a detec-tor, however, as suchtubes will not function

on the high plate voltages, required forresistance -coupled amplification.

Dry -cell tubes may be used. However,the amplification will not be so great aswhen 5 -volt quarter -ampere tubes areemployed. Even better results will beobtained by using a new type of tubedesigned especially for the purpose andrecently placed on the market by a num-ber of manufacturers. They operate on6 -volt filament current and have an un-usually high amplification constant whichis greatly to be desired of the tubes in thisclass of work.

If hand -controlled rheostats are em-ployed, a voltmeter or ammeter should beused to keep the filament current at ex-actly the proper value designated by themanufacturer of the tube. An alternative,however, is to use a ballast resistor,which,in this case, performs in just as efficient a

manner as one ormore rheostats andhas the added ad-vantage of requir-ing no further at-tention.

not aware of the fact thet Charlesleutz had anything to do with theNordons or Haucks. Hauck was a

THE NEW PHONOGRAM FOR SEPTEMBER, 1907

REPEATING PHONOGRAPH CLOCKADOWNTOWN clockmaker has worked out a re-

peating phonograph clock, which in his beliefwill in a large measure supplant the old style

of hell repeaters. His mechanical arrangement con-sists of a pair of cylinder records on which have beenrecorded the hours and each five minutes of the day.These are moved along a bar by clock work, and whenit is desired to know the time, the pressure of a buttonthrows the diaphragm into place, the record revolvesand announces the time after this fashion --"two thirty-five." He says it is only a matter of mechanics to pro-duce a clock that at the prop 'r time in the morningwill release a weight that will lift the clothes off a bedand at the same time call out, "John, it's time to getup. Hurry on now, the breakfast is on the table andall getting cold. Come on, get a move on you, etc.,"with such repetitions and variations as will be mostpleasing and effective in assisting the slumberer inthrowing off his torpidity.-Talking Machine World.

That which reachedthe ear in the reproduction unless the greatest carewas taken, was the word "Ice," which, of course, wasnot the one desired. The "th" sound Is very difficultand never loud. The "r" is also hard to record clearlyunless it be rolled.
