PRESIDENT’SREPORTWell it’s been a while since my last report and it’s not because there’s been nothing going on. As most of you know A1 Mechanical changed address late last year and its been a while since busi-ness has been this consistent - so it would be great if you all keep up the good work! Oh, a special thanks to Nigel (check out who won broken axle for August). Toperi is just around the corner, and with no dramas in the running of last year’s competition, this year should be just a routine for us now. It goes without saying that many hands make light work so don’t be afraid to volunteer to help out. Your assistance will be much appreciated. Tuff Truck challenge once again didn’t disappoint and while Ferret and Anthony didn’t exactly have a great weekend, Tony and Wazz managed a stage win and 5th place outright

Easters’ Fraser Island escape was well supported by a whole bunch of us and of course the trip came with plenty of adventure, from bent hilux chassis’s to the mythical Nissan dance that will surely became an urban legend - only spoken about in hushed tones in dark places. It’s great to see some new members joining the club and even better seeing some old ones taking part in club activities. The trip planner is looking a little bare and could do with a tune up so don’t be shy to lead a trip or suggest one!

ARB Corporate has opened up a new 4x4 accessory store in Orange. This seems a little strange seeing that an ARB outlet was already operating in Orange? I guess that would make it hard for the already operating ARB store to trade with another kicking off? If this all seems like there is more to this story, there probably is. Opposite Lock also operates in Orange and has been a long time sup-porter of the Canobolas 4wd club. I’m not telling anyone where they should or shouldn’t purchase their 4x4/camping products, I am suggesting that we should support the local blokes that support us. The AGM is also just around the corner and we are looking for a venue for the November date. For anyone that hasn’t been to an AGM in the past, we normally hold the November monthly meeting first and then the AGM, followed by a club sponsored BBQ. So if you have a favorite picnic spot that you would like to share, speak up. Oh, this will be happening on the Sunday 13th Nov. This is your chance to vote someone on to next year’s committee or stand yourself.

It was decided, as this is the Canobolas 4wd club’s 10th year that our current founding members will be recognized for their contribution to the club by presenting them with a plaque at this years AGM. Also a ten year membership plaque will be issued to those members as the anniversary of their membership comes round...

Well that’s it from me for now. Hope everyone is well and see you at the next meeting!CheersGlenn Gosper

FUNKHANA!With the weather forecast not predicting anything good, a few members headed out to the Richards Curtins Ln property Saturday afternoon to set up camp early for Sundays funkana. There is nothing better than kicking back with friends around a camp fire swapping grossly over exaggerated stories. Numerous camp ovens placed by the fire emitted fragrances of delicious food while laughter and good cheer filled the cool night air along with the sounds of Tony busting his Nissan. Sunday arrived in a hurry to blue skies, thankfully. Breakfast was had and the fun began. Tony Crowhurst ventured out for a look and took no time at all giving some of the Toperi tracks a go. Jake also got in on the act and between them I’m not sure who recovered who the most. Five stages were set up. The first involved a blind fold, a rope and a navigator. The second was a timed stage involving driving though a series of tyres. The next was an unassisted blind folded drive to a fixed point. Suzi Weeks was the best at this stage and I think I heard her say she would definitely be doing all her driving this way in the future. The last stage involved the driver maneuvering their vehicle into a series of parking bays while being timed. Unfortunately the predicted rain came mid afternoon and the final stage was cancelled.A fun time was had by all with Allan Weeks showing his style by coming home in first place. Dave Huthnance managed to steer the Musso into second place and Darren Weeks filled in third place in his Prado.

KEN WHO?KEN BLOCK, WORLD RALLY DRIVER RENOWNED FOR HIS INSANE GYMKHANA VIRAL VIDEO’S.

Ken Block : Not presentat Funkhana

Like to see an entertaining video of a crazy guy doing crazy things in a crazy car? Then look no further than this man, Ken Block. From Long Beach, California, Ken has always been an action sports superstar. However he only got in a rally car for the first time in 2005, and after only 5 years, Ken Block’s team, The Monster Energy World Rally Team, entered in the WRC (World Rally Championship), the top of the rallying ladder.

When he isn’t racing, Ken films these crazy video’s of him doing crazy tricks with a 2010 Ford Fiesta, identical on the exterior to his rally car. These videos get millions of hits and with them, Ken became an internet sensation.

The Gymkhana video’s can be seen on YouTube, they are all worth a look. They will blow your mind, just don’t try this at home.

Windburndale

WanderingsSome eight vehicles gathered at the Harvey Norman car park for the trip to Winburndale Nature

Reserve. We departed on what was a mild and hopefully what was going to be a sunny winter’s day

and regrouped on the eastern side of Bathurst before proceeding to Yetholme, where we took a left

turn off the Highway and followed Yetholme Drive and up to Macabees Road. We pulled over for a

quick person swap in cars and for the Chief Navigator, Brianna to take the front seat with Dad.

The group consisted of Stephen Littlewood (Nissan P), the Stanborough family (Rodeo), Mike and

Bev Bourke (Toyota P), Steve Price (Landy), Bob Olde (Nissan P), Keith Plummer (Nissan P), Scott

Willis (Nissan P) and the Hobden’s as trip leader. After a quick chat on convoy procedure we were

on our way through a pine forest. The track is very stony, making it a rough sort of ride for the first

few k’s. We soon descended the slopes, via a three point turn at a pinch in the track, into natural

woodland and a small creek crossing. Approximately half way up the next slope we encountered a rather large tree that had fallen across the track completely blocking forward progress; no way round above or below.

A quick notification on the two-way and Jake responds that he has brought along a chainsaw, ‘thank god for that’ says Nigel. What followed over the next 45 minutes, whilst removing the tree from across the track, were a hilarious couple of events. After removing the easy limbs off the tree’s trunk we tackled the 2 foot diameter logs, cutting it into sections and rolling the logs off the track. It was during this process that Bob found himself on the deck looking up skywards and needing a bit of TLC to patch himself back together (well done ‘First Aid Sue’ to the rescue) – no more a long sleeved shirt – the left sleeve was torn to shreds (better get the wife to make it a short sleeved shirt now Bob). The second event whilst not so hilarious saw Nigel miss read the compression section in the log and he managed to stick the chain and bar – Mmmmm what now! Out comes trustee Steve with his high-lift jack to raise the log and release the pressure on the bar and chain.

Once we had cleared the track we were back on our way, stopping for morning tea at the 5 way junction; a nice sunny spot on top of a ridge. Once again we descended back into the native timber and then through a recently logged pine plantation and up to Eskdale Road and a little parallel detour following a narrow track where we encountered more storm damage and minor obstructions across the track. Back onto Eskdale Road we head for Eskdale Trig and a nice lookout for a barbecue lunch.

Trip Report

Windburndale

Page 9: Lost Traction October 2011

After lunch we continued along Eskdale Road to its’ junction with Mt Horrible Road, turning right onto Mt Horrible Road we headed down to Palmers Oaky where we met the Upper Turon River. The area around Turon Gates was heavy exploited during the Gold Rush Era and there are many water races and diggings along the track. We followed the Upper Turon Road to Sofala, on the way opening and closing many farm gates and crashing through causeways - well some of us anyway!

Our last stop of the day – afternoon tea at Turon Lawns, was a neat campsite beside the Turon River, about 5 k’s east of Sofala. The site has picnic shelters, barbecue areas, toilet facilities and level tent sites all within a 100m of the Turon River. A hill climb track was spotted and Bob gave it a go in the Patrol, then Steve Price in the Landy, Scott in the Patrol and then Nigel seeing Scott’s Patrol make it – gave it ago, but alas the Jackaroo (or the driver) just didn’t have the knack – something might have broken – not sure!

We left Sofala and headed to Bathurst before returning to Orange by about 5.45pm. Thanks to all who came along and many thanks to Jake for carting the Club BBQ and bringing along the trusty chainsaw. As without the chainsaw I am not sure where we would have ended up! LOL

Grade 0 Very easy, no 4WDriving anticipated. An easy social outing.Typically a Club Christmas Party, Annual General Meeting or outing to a place of interestwhere no off roading is anticipated, vehicle damage is unlikely.

Grade 1 Very easy, recovery gear required. A social outing with some 4WD required. This is a good beginners trip to learn the ropes. Possibility of a few rough, slippery, boggy orsteep conditions. Car damage in terms of scratches and rock damage underneath is un-likely.Suitable for “soft roaders” and all wheel drive vehicles not equipped with low range. Yourvehicle MUST have front and rear recovery points!

The remaining grades are only suitable for vehicles commonly known as 4WD Vehicles which have low

range and good approach, departure and ramp over angles. Not suitable for “soft roaders” and “all wheel drives”

Grade 2 Some easy 4WDriving required. Snatch strap and Recovery Hooks required. Moderate skills. Some technical driving skills may be required. Possible rough, slippery, boggy or steepconditions. Shallow water crossings. Good learners trip for when the gravel road stops andthe 4WD track begins. Car damage such as scratches and underneath rock damage ispossible if not careful.

Grade 3 Moderate 4WDriving required. Technical Driving Skills required. Recovery gear requiredand will probably be needed. Very likely to encounter mid to very rough, slippery, boggy, rocky or steep conditions. Shallow to deep water crossings up to sill panel depth.Experienced Grade 2 drivers. Some suspension modifications, good tyres, side steps etcshould be considered. Car damage such as scratches and underneath rock damage is likely ifnot careful.

Attendees :- Steve Price with Sue Hobden in the passenger seat, Simmo and son Nathan, David and Barbara Chapman, Gavin Hillier, Mal Lacey and family, Di Buckman and kids, and my son Mark with his mate Zac who has just bought a Patrol and was keen to try it out.

We all met up as planned, with Di driving from Mudgee. She had ice forming on the front surfaces of the car when she set out. Even though she was concerned that she may have been a bit late she was bang on time. It was a beautiful sunny morning, in town.

We all headed out and got about half way there before running into heavy fog. On to the cemetery for a bit of

Trip ReportOPHIR

Page 13: Lost Traction October 2011

history and an appreciation of how hard life must have been during the gold rush. A bloke who was camping behind the cemetery came over and said when he saw us all standing there in the fog he reckoned the dead must have risen. It was a little eerie!

From there we took a very short drive to the Gunadoo gold mine for those who were interested to take a tour. After a LOT of talking from the owner and a few inappropriate touches on some of the women in the group he led the tour into the mine. Sue and Barbara decided not to tempt him any further and didn’t do the tour and Simmo and I stayed outside as well. While the tour continued underground the sun slowly broke through to shine on and warm those of us waiting outside. From then on it was a beautiful winters day.

EVENTUALLY we were able to get away from him and headed down to Tinker’s Point for morning tea. This is where “grade 2” became a topic to be discussed at the next meeting. Mal in the

X-Trail followed me down onto the river bank after we did some road building to get him through the rough bit but we did not anticipate the nose running aground on more rocks just beyond that and it took a few to lift the front by the bar while I removed rocks. Unfortunately some underbody damage was done albeit superficial.

We had morning tea and discussed the pro’s and con’s of proceeding with the X-Trail. Mal walked the track and thought it may be ok but I knew what lay further ahead and eventually decided it was best for Mal to take his car back rather than forward. I will praise him at this point for having the sense to listen and take advantage of the experience that the club provides and agree to leave the X-Trail behind. We were road building again with a view to getting him back up the hill that

Trip ReportOPHIR

Page 14: Lost Traction October 2011

caused the problem but with input from others we decided it would be better to fill a hole along the bank and drive him up what used to be the hard track but is now quite easy. His gear was loaded into Simmo’s Prado and they continued on with us in a few vehicles.

From there we headed on upstream towards the main camp ground and more road building was needed for some of the cars to get through. It quickly became clear that leaving the X-Trail behind was the right decision. Just after Di traversed a sightly tricky bit Mark came up behind Sue and lifted her off the ground like a rag doll, the ensuing scream caught Di by surprise as she had no idea what was happening and thought something had gone terribly wrong! Bloody kids !

Trip ReportOPHIR

Page 15: Lost Traction October 2011

We arrived at the main camp ground in time for a nice and very leisurely lunch where steak and even wine were the order of the day before Di had to depart to get her daughter home in time for work.

Onward upstream to the boundary fence and across the hill, back down to cross the creek and head towards Salvation Bob’s open cut mine with a little play on a short steep climb. I did my usual and took it slow and steady and it took a few goes to get up. There was a tree VERY close to the passenger door at exactly the wrong part of the climb that made me take it a little too cautiously, but we got up it in the end. Zac sat in his Patrol and watched and when I came back down he had a go. Well, between the undoubted capability of an old Patrol with a bit of a lift and near new Bighorn tyres, and the exuberance of youth, he drove straight up first go without too much “noise”. I believe he went around and did it again. You could see the smile for miles. Your membership application will be expected soon Zac.

From there we continued to Salvation Bobs mine for a look around, then on and up the track to a wash out on a slight climb. I drove the straddling line with ease as did Zac once it was explained. The rest chose the line that looked easier but proved a bit more difficult to keep traction on. Simmo demonstrated the true value of “airing down” to get through.

From there we went back to the X-Trail and headed for home, with a stop for some of us at fourth crossing to walk up to the waterfall for a look before heading home.

I think we all had a good day.

Thanks to all for attending and making it a good day.

K&A 4WD raise money for the Cancer CouncilBy Gavin Hillier

Ken Harris, the owner of K&A 4WD in Orange shaved off his trademark beard he has been growing for the last 15 years, to raise funds for the Cancer Council. Members of our club were involved, showing off their competition trucks as well as manning the BBQ. Club member Andy Stewart who works with Orange Camping World & 4WD kindly donated items for the Auction. After Ken had his beard shaved, members of the public bribed Ken into also shaving his hair for $2000 which the Canobolas 4wd Club contributed $500 dollars towards.

In total over ten thousand dollars were raised for the Cancer Council!

Canobolas 4WD display at the Australian National Field Days

Here is an important message from Steve Price, who is once again co-ordinating the club’s presence at the Field Days this year...

Hi everyoneIt is that time of year again. The Australian National Field Days are on Tuesday 18th, Wednesday 19th and Thurs-day 20th of October.

Here is a link to their site so you can see what will be there: http://www.anfd.com.au/

So far I have my ever reliable helper, Sue for the three days and Huthy for at least one.

I need people for all three days. It is a bit of fun and you get FREE entry into the Field Days and SECURE, by way of members presence, ONSITE PARKING!!!

It is traditional for members to take time out and go for a wander through the exhibits during the day and there are often good deals to be had.

There is good food on site and last year there was an all important coffee stall just down from our site.

You never know, you may be flat out or you may get to sit for a good part of the day and chat with fellow mem-bers and have a bit of a play, it is a good track to muck around on.

Please let me know which days you can attend.

ThanksSteve Price
