Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School Newsletter
reetings to Everyone,
It seems just like yesterday we were starting
off in September with a new group of Grade 9
students. I cannot believe how fast this school year
has gone by and we are now fast approaching the
summer months.
We have journeyed together, students, staff, and
parents.
We began our journey gathering as a community
with the Loretto Sisters for our opening mass and
announcing our school charity as the Angel
Foundation Loretto Sisters Charity.
We welcomed the Grade 9s at Camp White Pine,
celebrated Thanksgiving Mass, dressed up at
Halloween, brought home Term 1 report cards in
November, attended our school dance, danced to
Italian music at our annual Pasta Night and
celebrated the Advent season with Christmas
Baskets, our Advent Mass, Christmas concert, the
beautiful and carefully decorated Nativity village in
the office hallway and pictures with Santa.
We journeyed into January with New Year’s
resolutions, the semi-formal, Valentine's Day, March
Break, the Literacy test, preparations for Camp
Olympia Leadership, Charity Cup, another report
card, International Picnic and Multicultural Evening,
and Mother Daughter Mass and Tea, and Father
Daughter Barbeque.
As a student athlete, you participated on one or
more teams throughout the fall, winter and spring
seasons culminating with our school athletic banquet
at the end of May.
Now with end of the school year approaching, we
celebrate graduation festivities, and you are finishing
your class work and preparing for final exams.
Ladies, throughout your journey, you have kept the
spirit of Mary Ward front and centre with your spirit
of generosity, your compassion for those less
fortunate than yourself, and your hard work and
dedication to your academic success.
Ladies, you have truly lived the charism of Mary
Ward and the Loretto Sisters as you continue to do
good and do it well.
Thank you, everyone, students, staff, parents and
the Loretto Sisters for an energized and wonderful
school year. God Bless!
Anita Bartolini, Principal

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and
love. But the greatest of these is love.”
1 Corinthian 13:13
ur school’s spirituality is based on love and charity as its driving force; therefore, we conscientiously aim at meeting the needs of the others. Pope Francis reminds us that Jesus wanted to show us
his heart as the heart that loved so deeply. …God loved us, he loved us with such great love. I am thinking of what St Ignatius told us…. He pointed out two criteria on love. The first: love is expressed more clearly in actions than in words. The second: there is greater love in giving than in receiving. These two criteria are like the pillars of true love: deeds, and the gift of self. (6/7/13 Sacred Heart) Pope Francis further stresses that “What is the law of the People of God? It is the law of love, love for God and love for neighbour according to the new commandment that the Lord left to us (cf. Jn 13:34). We must ask the Lord to make us correctly understand this law of love. How beautiful!” The foundress of the Sisters of Loreto, Mary Ward, had the experience of giving and receiving the love of God in relationships which enabled her to love and serve God wholeheartedly. She counselled that “to undertake any work of charity which seems proper to further the glory of God and the common good”, and continues to inspire and challenge us today. To implement the charism of the Loretto Sisters, who founded our school, we have each year directed our efforts to meeting particular needs of the global and local communities. Our school community has been privileged to share a local project partnership with the Loretto Sisters. In particular, over the last three years, Loretto Abbey decided to embrace the education and
empowerment of the youth as its Millennium Goal. We were privileged to partner with the Angel Foundation For Learning, a registered Canadian charity. Therefore, the money raised through our numerous school fundraisers this year goes towards the Angel Foundation For Learning. With this endeavour, our newly formed trust fund [within the Angel Foundation For Learning] will sustain some vulnerable secondary students within the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Our fundraising projects, begun in September of 2014, were completed by June 2015. Fortunately, we found that by the end of the 2014-2015 school year, as you can see from the summary, we have met our goal. Our school community has experienced great joy in our servant leadership and actions to promote social justice at the local level. As the sacred scriptures remind us, “Let all that you do be done with love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14. Throughout our journey, Loretto Abbey Community has felt appreciative for the joy we have experienced. We the Chaplaincy team, genuinely wish to thank the students, staff, parents and friends of the Loretto Abbey school community for their generous collective effort in fund raising for these life- sustaining projects that have greatly enhanced our joy in furthering human well-being. In this way we hope to live out Mary Ward’s words “things belonging to the service of God must shine.”

English Corner Mr. Andy Cluff, Head of English
ere it is… the beginning of June and the end
of another year of English Studies at The
Abbey. The English Department wishes good
luck to all our students writing their finals; especially
the Grade Nines who are writing their very first High
School English Exam.
Congratulations to all those who participated in
February’s OECTA Young Authors Contest. A full list
of winners is published elsewhere in this Newsletter
but, of special note, is Miranda Bundgard, whose
entry won the Provincial Prize for Poetry, and will be
published and distributed throughout Ontario.
September will see our successful Grade 9 Enriched
English programme extended to include Grade 10
Enriched for the first time. As Hamlet might say, “A
consummation devoutly to be wished.”
We’re all very excited about the English/Arts Trip to
Stratford on September 16th to see the highly-
acclaimed production of “The Sound of Music.” This
hundred dollar value [show and bus transportation] is
being made available to our students for $35.00. Ask
your English teacher in September in case there are
any remaining seats.
In October, our Department, in conjunction with the
English Speaking Union of Canada, will again
sponsor the preliminaries for the “Shakespeare On
The Platform” Recitation Contest where contestants
recite two Shakespearean sonnets and a choice of
monologue from one of his plays. Finals will be held
at Toronto’s prestigious Arts and Letters Club.
Of special note for Grade 10 Parents is the date for
the 2016 OSSLT [Literacy Test]. Preparations begin
in September and the test will be held on Thursday
March 31st.
Registration is open for our March Break trip to
Greece and Italy. Ms. Caprara and Mr. Lopes are
organizing this fantastic experience. Contact them, or
any member of the English Department, for additional
information or a printed brochure.
We really encourage all students to CONTINUE TO
READ throughout the summer. Our English
Department Reading Lists are published on the
Abbey Website.
Have a great summer!!

Arts Department Nijole Benotas, Arts Department Head
he second half of the 2014-2015 school year
has flown by unbelievably fast. Glancing back,
we remember and relish in the great work we
have all accomplished in the Arts department.
The music students worked very hard and in
February, the Loretto Abbey Senior and Intermediate
Concert Bands were put to the test at the annual
Ontario Band Association Festival. The Senior
Concert Band was awarded Silver and the Rising
Stars Awards. The Intermediate Concert Band came
back with Silver Plus and an invitation to the
Nationals.
The Concert Choir attended “High School Choral
Festival” led by Hilary Apfelstadt, (Ph.D Professor and
Director of Choral Activities, U of T) in March. A few
months later, auditioned choristers from vocal class
and the choir joined the Upper Canada Chorus in a
Disney event featuring music from Aladdin, Beauty
and the Beast and more. Past “Magic of Disney”
concerts have included Disney legends like Jodi
Benson (original "Little Mermaid") and Susan Egan
(original "Belle"). Our girls had the time of their lives.
Dramatic arts students were very busy, especially in
the first months of this year, in preparation for the
annual Sears Drama Festival. Our artists prepared
“Girl Town” and “Reunion on Gallows Hill” and came
back with two outstanding awards: Stage
Management and Direction awards. The same plays
were presented to the Loretto Abbey community in
April. On May 22, the grade 12 Drama students
presented their year-end show called "Don't Drink the
Water," a comedy by Woody Allen. The performances
were outstanding.
For the first time in our history, Loretto Abbey’s Arts
Department hosted its very own Arts Week. Arts
Week started on Monday, April 13 with Mass,
celebrated by His Eminence Thomas Cardinal
Collins. Many staff and students attended the opening
ceremonies in the parlor featuring a visual artwork
display, and live music.
On Tuesday April 14, we invited all students to attend
one of two assemblies to celebrate the creative minds
of our musicians, actors and performers.
Thursday April 16 was dramatic arts day. Loretto
Abbey welcomed Chaminade high school drama
performers for the afternoon workshop.
As part of Arts Week, the drama students presented
their productions of "Girl Town" and "Reunion on
Gallows Hill" on Thursday April 16 at 7:00pm, and the
Abbey musicians had their annual spring concert "All
You Need Is "HeART" on Friday, April 17.
None of our achievements would be possible without
our school's leaders, administrative team: A. Bartolini,
J. Pannozzo and A. Kyriakou and their continuous
support, help and leadership.
A special thank you goes out to LAMPO members.
This year we say good-bye to the LAMPO president
Ms. Sofi Mondesir and vice-president Mr. H. Gough.
Thank you for your help in fund-raising, support, and
advocacy for the music program. You will be missed
and your efforts will be appreciated long after we say
goodbye.
As we bid farewell to yet another successful and
challenging school year, I would like to announce that
the Arts department was blessed with a new member
- Gabriel Noah Sanguigni – C. Sanguigni’s baby! -
who was born on June 3, 2015. Congratulations! As
well I would like sincerely thank all of the Arts
Department students, especially our graduates, and
all the Arts teachers: N. Caetano, N. Hollington, A.
Muia, M. Pereira, G. Racioppo and C. Sanguigni for
their unwavering support and dedication to the most
beautiful subject - one that truly manifests from the
depths of our hearts - the Arts.
Have a safe and joyous Summer Holiday!

Track and Field
Paul Bregin
he 2015 Loretto Abbey Track & Field Team had
some big goals going into the
season, coming off a solid fall cross-
country season where they were TDCAA
Overall Girls Champions, and a great
winter indoor season, being the top girls
school at both the Birchmount Invitational
(Feb 6), as well as the Adam's Invitational
(Mar 6). The outdoor season kicked off in
April, with the team competing in 3
invitational meets. Highlights include
dozens of overall wins, a meet record in the
4x800m event at the Birchmount, as well as
3 meet records by midget hurdler Kiera
McDonald. At the TDCAA Track & Field
Championships on May 21-22, Abbey
again won the Overall Girls pennant, along
with the Midget Girls pennant, firmly
establishing itself as the top running school in Toronto.
In the end, 19 girls advanced to the METRO region
qualifying meet on May 27-28, and from there, 8 girls
obtained top 4 results and advanced to the OFSAA
Championships on June 4-6 at the University of Toronto.
Grade 9 Stella Adamo won the bronze
medal in the midget girls 800m. Kiera
McDonald was 10th in the midget girls
300m hurdles, while Clare O'Shea
was 10th in the midget girls 3000m. In
the junior events, Ava Rodrigues was
12th in the 800m, while Sydney Grier
was 15th in the 3000m. The lone
senior runner, Emma Harris, placed
17th in the 3000m event. Lastly, in the
4x400m open girls event, the team of
Calvi Leon, Clare O'Shea, Ava
Rodrigues, and Stella Adamo placed
13th overall.
The entire 37 member team is to be
commended on their hard work and
dedication all season long. Many members participate in
twice weekly workouts and up to 4-5 total runs each week
from September until the end of May. It isn't easy, but this
level of commitment is a testament of what is required to
be successful in this sport.

Math Memories Shaun Hussain, Mathematics Department Head
his past year at the Abbey has been absolutely Mathtastic! Our students have made huge gains, and personal successes throughout their courses. Some of our many highlights include the CBR for the Grade 9’s, Cayley and
Galois Math Contests for the Grade 10’s, the grade 11’s were provided with the unique experience of finding mathematical applications in architecture by exploring and measuring the Abbey’s very own chapel, and the Grade 12’s represented the Abbey with finesse at this year’s Euclid math contest. In November, 114 students participated in both Canadian Intermediate Mathematics Contest and the Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest from the University of Waterloo. A giant Congratulations goes out to all the students who participated. This year nine of our students placed in the top 25% for the Canadian Intermediate Mathematics Contest. Congratulations to Manon Flynn (School Champion), Diana Diaz, Amy Kim, Margret Lo, Woosol Yoo, Erin McGivney, Julia McDonald, Ariel Corsano and Ariana Pareja! Outstanding work ladies! We look forward to next year’s competition. Keeping with Abbey tradition, our Senior students represented the Abbey at the Canadian Senior Mathematics contest. We had over 60 students participating, and achieved an overall ranking of 24th in the province! Not only that, but the Abbey was the highest-ranking school in the TCDSB! Amazing job ladies! You set the standard high! The following students placed in the top 25%: Hillary (Xueting) Wu, Diamond (Xiaoxue) Xu, Becky Zhao, Aurora (Jingwen) Xu, Erica (Minjia) Chen, Ona (Shu Hui) Ou Yang, Marilyn D’Souza, Ivy (Ruiyao) Li, Cecilia (Jingchen) San, Yi Wang, and Stacy (Xiyuan) Zheng. A huge Congratulations goes out to Hillary (Xueting) Wu, who not only is the School Champion, but is also the TCDSB champion for this contest! Congratulations Hillary! In February, 102 students wrote the University of Waterloo Pascal, Cayley and Fermat contests. Congratulations to all students who participated, with honourable mention going out to: Pascal (Gr. 9): Ruthie Plante (School Champion) and Laura
Spagnuolo;
Cayley (Gr. 10): Amy Kim (School Champion) and Julia McDonald;
Fermat (Gr. 11): Cecilia (Jingchen) San (School Champion),
Rosemarie Tang, Daniela Roscetti, Joana Bargas, and Annamaria
Marchesan.
Congratulations Ladies! You have made the Abbey a fierce competitor and we cannot wait to see what next year will bring!
April was a very busy Math-ademic time for us. On April 8th, six of our grade 12 students went to the University of Waterloo to compete in the Canadian Team Mathematics Contest. We ranked 14th in all of Canada! Amazing job ladies! A giant congratulations and thank you
goes out to Rosemary Jose, Ivy Li, Nareh Tahmasian, Tiffany Yeung, Becky Zhao and Stacy Zheng. These girls performed
incredibly well in some challenging conditions. Well done ladies! We are incredibly proud of all of you! Also, in April 102 students participated in the University of Waterloo Fryer, Galois, Hypatia and Euclid mathematics contest. Congratulations to all who participated in these contests, especially to the following students who ranked in the top 25%:
Fryer (Gr. 9): Campbell Barker (School Champion) and
Jennifer Lopez;
Galois (Gr. 10): Amy Kim (School Champion)
Hypatia (Gr. 11): Cecilia (Jingchen) San
(School Champion) and Teresa Min;
Euclid (Gr. 12): Hillary (Xueting) Wu (School
Champion).
Honourable mention goes out to Cecilia San who was not only the school champion for the Hypatia contest but is also the TCDSB Champion. Through the hard efforts of all of our students the Abbey ranked 43rd overall from the Hypatia contest, and is the highest ranked school in the TCDSB! Congratulations Ladies! As the contest season winded down, our students were still going strong in Mathematics with more challenges and academic opportunities. On May 5th, 32 students wrote their Advanced Placement
Calculus AB exam. These are students who have studied through the Pre – AP program in Math to the
final stage of this exam. It has been a bittersweet journey, and we are very proud of every student who persevered through the course, and wrote the exam. We look forward to hearing the results, which we are anxiously awaiting, and will be released in mid-July by the College Board. On Tuesday, May 19th and Wednesday, May 20th, our Grade 9 students participated in EQAO and Final Exam Preparation Days. They spent the day reviewing topics from the entire Grade 9 curriculum and worked on a variety of EQAO and more challenging questions. In addition to this, the department ran an after school Numeracy Program as an additional supplement to prepare students for their final exam. The engagement of the students was phenomenal throughout both events. A special thank you goes out to the entire staff; especially to Mr. Bregin, Mr. Femia, Mr. Luca, Mr. Manco, Ms. Pollard, Ms. Salvador, and Ms. Wong for facilitating the review sessions and boosting our Grade 9s confidence as they prepared for both the EQAO and final exams. A big Congratulations goes out to all our Grade 9’s who survived the Review days and successfully completed their very first Math Exam! Great job ladies! The Mathematics Department is proud of the achievements of all our students in all grades. This has been an exciting and successful year, which was made possible by the hard work of the students and the tireless efforts of their teachers. Congratulations everyone! The future has infinite possibilities! Have a wonderful and safe summer!
