Sparky has a new inexpensive way to train your horses andpractice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or

any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give your horse a jerk when it is roped andreleases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick up the calf and tie it. The legs are springloaded for gathering them. The front left leg has a loose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 Ibs. and it comes with a bladder for more body weight. Body and legs aremade from a plastic rubber material that is flexible and very durable.

  • THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fi bers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a vipers strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today.

With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you wont break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate.

But Clark hadavoided the troublethat would plaguethe final six, whichincluded formerworld championMonty Lewis andWNFR qualifier ClifCooper and TrentWalls. Runningcalves, down calves, pigging stringmiscues and speedjams took their toll.

Only Lewis, the2004 world champ from Hereford, TX, had amistake free run. He was perhaps the fastestto the calf and on the ground, but his runended past the halfway point of the arenaand well left of center. In thefifth call-back position, Lewisstopped the clock in 9.35 andpulled into second in theaverage with a 39.38 on four.

Clif Cooper, who cameback in the six hole, closedwith an 11.47 after beingforced to get his calf up.Michael Otero, back in thefourth hole, had two mis-string errors and finished withan 11.41. Seth Childers, theNo. 3 call, was off-balanceduring the flank and had a12.65. Bradley Bynum, thesecond callback, was solid, but well downthe arena and had an 11.72.

The No. 1 call went to Walls, who hadbeen solid all day long. He had posted a28.76 on his first three and needed to

complete his final run in 10.02 tohold his spot and claim the JBS title.

But like many of the others, Wallscalf was down when he got there. Hetried to save time with a single wrapand half-hitch tie, but the clockedstopped in 10.68. He finished in39.44 and ended up third.

Clarks short round run earned up$1,370 and the average win paid him$4,795. Added to the money won fora second-place finish in the thirdround and a sixth-place run in thefirst round, Clark collected $8,267 inthe Ariat Open. He also received aStran Smith Ultimate saddle from

Cactus Saddlery valued at $5,000.Combined with the $1,000 he won forfinishing second in the 16-head LocalCowboy Match and the $473 he collectedin the TCRA Open three days earlier, Clarkfinished the weekend with almost $15,000in cash and prizes.

And expectations for the future. With 955 contestants over four days,

the JBS awarded more than $312,000 incash and prizes, shattering records set in2010.

With the economy the way it is, wereally expected it to be down, said eventfounder Joe Rhodes of Joes Boot Shop inClovis. But the ropers told us that eventhough they were cutting back on theirroping, they were saving their money tocome here.

Thats a credit to Clovis, the EventsCenter, our sponsors and all the peoplewho work so hard to make this thing

happen, Rhodes said. The 7th annual JBS was dedicated to

Events Center maintenance directorJohnny Berry for his efforts in support ofthe event since its inception in 2005. Berrywas presented a limited edition Curtis Fortbronze during ceremonies prior to theevents final rounds.

The event was also dedicated to DarlaRhodes, who with her husband Joefounded Joes Boot Shop decades ago intheir garage at West Camp, TX. Coli Huntgave tribute to his grandmother during thepresentation ceremonies. It was the firstJBS Roping she had missed. She isreceiving cancer treatment in Houston.

Another pre-finals tribute went to thelate Leroy Radcliff of Roosevelt County, aformer roper and longtime supporter of theJBS Roping and numerous youth rodeo andjunior livestock events in the area.

been received for the annualevent, which features high schoolfreshmen through seniors, competing in ten events: barrelracing, pole bending, breakawayroping, goat tying, team roping, calf roping, steer wrestling, saddlebronc riding, bareback riding, andbull riding. The annual IFYR is an

opportunity for youth to competein rodeo against others fromacross the nation, and it also is achance to win money. Over$200,000 will be paid out towinners in each event. Theres alot of tough competition, MikeJackson, IFYR coordinator, pointsout. Weve seen a lot of goodcowboys and cowgirls comethrough here. He rememberswhen eight time world championTrevor Brazile competed inShawnee as a youth, along with PBR cowboys and AmazingRace contestants Jett and CordMcCoy, saddle bronc rider MikeOuthier, and timed event handRyan Jarrett.Contestants will compete in

eleven rodeo performances, beginning with the first one onSunday, July 10 at 8 pm, thenMonday, July 11 through Friday,July 15 at 9 am and 7:30 pm eachday. The finals performance willbe held on July 15 at 7:30 pm. Awestern tradeshow will take placeon the grounds. The event gives a boost to the

Shawnee economy, too. Jacksonestimates that 80,000 people come

to the six day event, and figuresthat about $5.5 million is spent intown during that time. For Jackson, who works year

Fort Smith, Arkansa, and finishedthird in Bennington, Kansas, tocollect checks worth $2,905 forthe June 2-5 weekend. That wouldhave been enough for him to pushpast Clint Cooper whos heldfirst place since Feb. 7 and leadthe world standings, except forone thing. Herrin opted not tocount his earnings fromBennington. Contestants have alimited number of rodeos they cancount toward the world standings

each year, and they have todeclare whether to official eachrodeo when they file their entrywith PROCOM. Cooper stillleads by $724.However, the tie-down roping

lead did change hands, butstayed in the family. A second-place finish at the Sisters(Oregon) Rodeo and a fifth-placecheck at the Livermore(California.) Rodeo was enoughto lift Tuf Cooper into first place in the tie-down ropingworld standings. He is now$1,749 ahead of older brotherClint Cooper.

athers Day had me reflecting and reinforces my belief that

being a good father is the greatestresponsibility of my life. The mostimportant job I will ever have is toinstill good values in my children that will help them be happy andcaring adults.

Baseball season just wound downlast week for my boys. Im a coach forStones team, along with a friend ofmine. These are eight-year-olds playingmachine pitch baseball. I wasnt there, but heard about the play-offs wheremothers on opposing teams came upwith different scores. The dads gotinvolved and it almost came to a

brawl, completely out of hand andunnecessary. This wasnt even for thechampionship, just to see who wouldplay our team. Ultimately thechampions would each get a trophythat cost no more than $3.50. Asludicrous as this sounds, Junior Rodeois underway and I can only imaginethe potential for problems with bucklesand saddles at stake.

These kids are seven and eightyears old and should be having a goodtime. I dont think Im raising aprofessional machine pitch baseballplayer. As coaches we try and keep itfun for the kids and its dishearteningto see parents act like this. It really

makes you feel sorry for the kidsbecause they have to be under pressureto win and thats just inappropriate atthat age. There will be plenty of timelater for them to experience pressure in life.

We have to do the best we can withour kids. My job is to make it fun andlet them enjoy themselves and play atthe level they are. If theyre seven, letthem be seven. I see a lot of parentspush their kids like its life or death. This is a kid thats not even 10 yearsold and they are putting the pressure ofa 40-year-old on them. It hurts myheart to see kids go through this, playing a game.

At five and seven years old, myboys really arent that interested inroping and thats okay. I cant put mydesire to win in my boys but I can letthem see my work ethic, withoutimposing it on them. My philosophy isthat some is taught, but most is caught.

When you start expecting too muchfrom your kids, most of the time youreasking your kid to do something youcouldnt do yourself. When you put

    FLetting Kids be Kids

  • LOOPS MAGAZINE 23

undue pressure on a kid to performlike a professional athlete, do youthink its a reflection of somethingyou may have been lacking? Oftentimes the parents who push their kidshard are those who underachieved orunder accomplished. Most people who have

    accomplished their goals are pretty

content with letting their kid be akid. Those are the kids who areusually the most successful, thoughnot always at an early age. When youpush a kid too young and theyredoing it for you, theyll be burned outand resentful of you and the sport.Ive never seen a positive outcomefrom pushing your kids to compete

like professional athletes.Let your kids know you love them.

Dont rob them of confidence byexpecting too much of them.Childhood should be happy and not a challenge.

Till next time, God Bless and Ill see you down the line.

t seems as though in the world we live that people are constantly in transition. With

the increase of knowledge in the past fewdecades, we live in the age of information. Withthat information we have the ability to tap intoresources that we could not have tapped intofifty years ago. With worldwide access tocomputers across the country, the informationalresources that are opened to us can boggle ourminds if allowed. Knowledge is a wonderfulblessing, however unless knowledge is appliedwith Godly wisdom, it is only uselessinformation. Sometimes information, knowledgeand truth change according to the newestscientific findings or the latest public opinionpolls. It is easy to get caught up in thisinformation age and lose track of where trueknowledge and information come from ourHeavenly Father. One thing that I have grown to appreciate

about God is that during times of transition,Jesus is that solid rock of stability. What thatmeans is that He is a friend that will never alteror falter. We need the unchanging stability ofthat Solid Rock, Jesus Christ, in our individuallives as well as in marriages, family relationshipsand businesses because if we are not careful theinstability of our volatile existence will infiltrateour daily life. These days, many kids grow up never

knowing the stability of a home that encouragesGodly behavior and choices. Kids must haveseeds of excellent parenting sown into theirlives and these seeds of excellent parentingproduce excellent kids with high expectationsand with that tenacity to rise above anycircumstance and seek after an eternal

resurrected Christ. Ultimately, theresponsibility of bringing stability into ourown life, our marriage, our home and familyfalls on no one but ourselves. Its easy toblame a spouse or a parent for our poorchoices in life, but my challenge to you thismonth is to look in the mirror and to see thatperson that God created for a specific purposeand passion and to make a choice to walk inthat purpose with passion. Kids will handlethe transitions of life appropriately whenGodly principals are taught through theexample of their parents.1 Timothy 6:6 says: Godliness with

contentment is great gain. A lot of people tryto be Godly and fail. And a lot of people try tobe content and fail. The only way we find truecontentment in our Godliness is to find ourpurpose in life and to hang our hat on thestability of the Solid Rock. I cannot tell youwhat your purpose is nor can anyone else, butthe Creator who created you can. Get into Hisword, spend time in prayer and find a greatchurch. Begin the most incredible journey ofyour life which will culminate in eternal life ina place called Heaven that God has preparedfor you and for me.

ell, maybe it was Fathers Day or just springtime, but I have a lot to say

about baseball and rodeo, much like Strandid this month in his Down the Linecolumn. Like Stran, I was the coach of amachine pitch baseball team, The Rangers, that two of my boys played on. We had agreat team that had a terrific season. Westarted out winning game after game andthen hit a slump just before our season-ending tournament kicked off. The othercoach of the team and I never drilled ourkids and tried hard to teach them thefundamentals of the game. I believe if kidslearn things correctly, they will have a goodtime playing the game, and our boys andone girl did just that this year.

Looking back at this years team theyprobably learned more by losing some oftheir games then they did by winning. Allof them in one way or another had to digdeep to regain the confidence anddetermination to climb back to the top andwin again. I have to say I am very proud ofall of them and the tournamentchampionship was a great accomplishment.I am especially proud of both of my boys aswell. Reed who is eight and Cooper at sixdid outstanding throughout the year.

On to Jr. rodeos, both Reed and Cooperare competitors. Reed has started ropingand loves it, while Cooper, still in the lowerage group, enjoys those events. I admit Ihave had to learn the hard way how not toimpose my competitive nature onto themas they compete at rodeos. Much likebaseball, all I can do is teach them how todo their events, and then let them do it.Really, they learn more by watching andpicking up things from others and the act of competing than what I could ever drillinto them.

Another trick I learned in both baseballand rodeo with my kids is not to keep scoreor write down the time. Heck, I usuallydont know what inning we are in at agame or what the fastest times were at anevent. Although this is more for my own

sanity, it keeps me focused on the game orthe run instead of what needs to be doneto win.

I think if I ever had enough time torope again, this would be a great way tokeep me from being too anxious during anevent. I use to get so caught up in what Ineeded to do to win that I lost focus onthe competition. My new philosophy -Forget everything going on, back into thebox and rope - its really that simple!
