The fi rst four strand calf rope with a core, the Striker is the most consistent calf rope available. It is constructed of a special synthetic, industrial strength polyester that will not stretch, giving it a longer life and more consistency. The four strands give

the Striker a smoother, faster feel than a polygrass. The core stabilizes the Striker, allowing it to rebound to its natural state.

Precise and consistant, every time.

he other day I was listening to ESPN radio and they were

talking about high profile athletesand the effect they have on theirteams. As the year progressessome teams seem to gel whileothers seem to disintegrate. Thisappears to directly relate to theattitude of the stars of the teams. If the star, or stars, are unselfishand have a good attitude, theirteam performed much better thanthose with stars who are self-

centered with bad attitudes.Attitude is a major factor in

anything you do. Attitude topstalent any day of the week whenit comes to performing in sports.

It’s been a long time, but I canrecall being in the practice penand being mad about something. Then every little thing that goeswrong seems like a bigger dealthan it really is. It’s easy to getupset at your horse, or becauseyour calf kicks, or when the gate

doesn’t open when you nod.The practice pen is about

training. Not only about roping, position, timing and all thephysical things, but you’re alsotraining how to mentally handlewhat you’re doing. I promise ifyou rodeo for a living you willcome up against one millionobstacles. Gatemen, security, judges, traffic, breakdown, thelist goes on and on. So if you arehaving a hard time with your

n our world we have a lot of people writing books about how to be a better leader. It

seems as though it may feed our ego more tobe a leader than to be a follower. I heardsomebody say that if you think you are leadingand no one is following, you are merely takinga walk. While I don’t want to minimize thevalue of good leaders, it is also imperative thatgood leaders also know how to follow.

Jesus made an interesting statement thatwas incredibly practical. He said, “Follow meand I will make you fishers of men.” It just sohappened that He was talking to fishermen. Iwould submit to you that in order to be agood leader you must be, without fail, humbleenough to allow anyone that could speakwisdom into your life to do so. Basically whatJesus was saying is that if you are a follower ofmine, you will value people enough to be aninstrument in leading them to Christ. Thewording is interesting that He said “I willmake you” with the emphasis on us allowing Him to give us His perspective on His value system.

My experience in fishing is that you have touse different bait for different fish. It just sohappens that the one thing that anybody andeverybody in this world needs is someone tolove them. Many have deceived themselves in

thinking that they don’t need anybody. Thesimple implication of following Christ is thatwe care enough about people to love them likeGod loves them. Since God loved you and mewhen we were unlovable, and continues tolove us with all of our faults, He has alsocommanded us to love people in that samemanner. The only way that will happen is ifwe follow close enough to God that we takeon His characteristics and His attributes.

The biggest challenge that you will everhave, should you choose to accept it, is tofollow Jesus and to be a fisher for men.

attitude in the controlledenvironment of your practice pen, then you are in big trouble.

If you anger easily, you’reprobably going to have a badattitude. This will affect everyaspect of your life and you need tofigure out why this happens andget a handle on it. I’m not sayingyou can’t have a professionalcareer if you ignore it, but youwill be the most miserable personthere is. If you have a badattitude, I have some bad news foryou. You will be miserable, no

matter what you do. Parents, if your kids have poor

attitudes in the roping pen, findsome chores for them. Chancesare they are taking it for grantedand not appreciating what theyhave. Roping has always been ablessing and any time I startedlooking at it like it was a job ordoing it out of duty, I remindedmyself I was the luckiest person inthe world for getting to rope.

There have been several timesin my life where roping was takenaway from me due to my health.

Thinking I might never get to ropeagain made me very appreciative.

Remember, you are not limitedby your level of talent. Attitudewill always outperform talent. Ifyou’re lacking a good attitude, take a few minutes and take stockof what you have to be gratefulfor. Counting your blessings isalways a great exercise. Doneoften enough, you’ll be surprisedhow your attitude will change.

Till next time, God Bless, and I’llsee you down the line.

Practice PenWhen going into a practice you must always have a

game plan for what you want to accomplish duringthat one session. If you do not have any kind of planbeforehand, you may hurt your ability rather thanincrease your skill. When first starting your practice, make sure all of your tack and equipment is properlyadjusted and fitted for you and your horse. A big thingpeople tend to forget about when calf roping or evenjust practicing calf roping is to tighten their back cinchas tight as their front cinch. If the back cinch is looseor not tight it will result in your horse being badlyhurt and in the end making even the best top levelhorse not want to work. Warming up your horseshould not consist of just loping the horse in a fewcircles. It should include things like making a horsesoft in the face by flexing, riding them collected, moving their shoulder, ribs, and hind end. Thesethings will make a good calf horse, a great calf horse.Spend time on flexing and making a horse break at the

Spring has sprung and the 2013 season is quickly turning into a

great year for rodeo and calfroping events all across the county.

Although the nightly newsseems to be full of doom andgloom, 2013 is promising to be agreat year. Sure, the country hasfallen off a few financial cliffs overthe past few months, and thefuture appears to hold no certainty, but it seems like that is so faraway from the rodeo arena. I saythis because so many are enteringup despite the high costs of living.

I think this is because, as acountry we hit bottom a few yearsago. People have found a way toget through hard times, maybe cutback on a few things and regroupin order to survive and get back towhat they enjoy doing. Many of

those who had to lay offcompeting for a while have nowtrudged ahead and are findingenough cash left over at the end ofthe month to get back in the game.

Associations all across thecountry also felt the crunch anddid their part to help ease theburden. Cutting membership costs, changing formats andreducing fees are only a few ways production companies andorganizers came up with to help out.

On the flip side, I believe thepast economic fallout did eventhings up a bit. Companies whowere struggling to keep afloatbefore the downslide finally had togive it up. It may have beenunfortunate for those companies, but in the long run, it opened up
