Toque TuesdayThis year, our four downtown properties raised nearly $4000 to support the Raising the Roofcampaign to end youth homelessness in Canada! On February 5, volunteers sold brandedtoques for $10 as part of this annual nation-wide campaign. Thanks to everyone thatsupported this cause by purchasing a toque!
1 Toque – a bus pass or someclothing for a youth’s all-importantfirst job interview.
10 Toques – supportive housingfor one youth for a week, allowinghim/her to learn essential life skills tohelp break away from street culture.
200 Toques – enough to support ayouth to go back to school for a yearor enroll in an apprenticeship programfor two months.

Liver Awareness Month
Most Canadians are oblivious to theirown risks of developing liver disease.Unfortunately, this ‘who me?’ attitude isleading to a rise in complications and deathsdue to advanced liver disease. To help changeattitudes, the Canadian Liver Foundation isusing March 2014, Liver Health Month,to urge Canadians to recognize that liverdisease may have many faces — eventheir own or that of someone they love.
In support of Liver Awareness Month,volunteers from the Canadian LiverFoundation sold bouquets of tulips in ourbuilding on Wednesday, March 26 overthe lunch hour. Thanks to your support,they raised $3,200 for liver researchand education.
Founded in 1969, the Canadian LiverFoundation (CLF) was the first organizationin the world devoted to providing supportfor research and education into the causes,diagnoses, prevention and treatment ofall liver disease.
Through their volunteer chapters acrossthe country CLF strives to improve publicawareness and understanding of liver healthand liver disease, raise funds for research,and reach out to liver disease patientsand their families.

INTACT PLACE COOKS
Eating liver friendly recipes not only helps protect andsupport your liver, but also helps your liver to functionbetter and to regenerate new, healthy liver cells. Here is a recipecreated by Mayo Clinic staff and adapted by liversupport.com.
Tuscan White Bean StewIngredients
• 2 cups dried cannellini soakedovernight, drained and rinsed
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 6 cups water
• 1 bay leaf
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 yellow onion, chopped
Optional Croutons
• 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
• 2 cloves garlic, quartered
• 1 slice whole-grain bread, cut into ½-inch cubes
Crouton Directions
Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat in a large frying pan. Add garlic and sautéfor 1 minute then let stand off the heat for about 10 minutes to infuse the garlic into theoil. Using a slotted spoon remove the garlic and discard. Return the pan to medium heatand add the bread cubes. Sauté, stirring and turning frequently, until lightly browned,about 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl and set aside.
Stew Directions
• In a large pot over high heat add the beans, ½ teaspoon salt, water, and bay leaf.
• Cover pot and bring to a boil then reduce the heat to low and remove the lid to onlypartially cover the pot.
• Simmer until the beans are tender, 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes.
• Discard the bay leaf and drain the beans reserving ½ cup of the cooking liquid ina small bowl.
• To the reserved cooking liquid add ½ cup of the cooked beans. Mash with a fork toform a paste.
• Over medium high heat add olive oil to the pot you used to cook the beans.
• Stir in the onion and carrots and sauté until the carrots are tender-crisp, 6 to 7 minutes.
• Add the garlic and cook until softened, about 1 minute.
• Add the salt, pepper, rosemary, beans, bean paste and stock to the pot.
• Bring to a boil then reduce heat to low and simmer until heated through,about 5 minutes.
• Ladle the stew into warmed bowls and sprinkle with the croutons,if desired. Serve immediately.
• 3 carrots, peeled and coarsely chopped
• 6 cloves garlic, finely minced
• ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary
• 1½ cups vegetable stock or broth

Lee NeufeldChiel Engineer, Intact Place
Lee Neufeld joinedthe Intact PlaceOperations teamin May 2011 and in2012 he becameChief Engineer.
Lee is a PowerEngineer with adegree in ElectronicEngineering. He uses his training and his manyyears of experience in operations and buildingmaintenance to ensure that Intact Place tenantshave a safe and comfortable place to work.
Lee says that of all the buildings he has workedin, Intact Place tenants are by far the friendliestand most helpful he has ever had the pleasureof working with. He enjoys his interactions withtenants, and takes pleasure in helping peoplein any way that he can.
In his spare time, Lee enjoys camping in thebush, riding a quad bike, and hunting withhis daughter.
He is a skilled woodworker and has built piecesfrom fine furniture to full sized log beds. He alsospends hours in the garage overhauling enginesand building hot rods.

The annual wine and beer tasting has now become a Bentall Kennedy tradition and itis one of our most popular tenant events! For the last five years, all proceeds raisedduring this event, nearly $16,000, have been donated to charitable organizations!
This year’s event is on Thursday, May 8 starting at 4 pm in the Livingston PlaceLounge located on the second floor. All proceeds will go to Children’s CottageSociety, our building charity of choice.
The Tasting will include:

Veterans Food Bank Spring Drive!
Last year we collected over 3,000 pounds of foodfor the Veteran’s Food Bank. This year’s drive takesplace from March 31 to April 17. Please placenon-perishable food items in the main floordrop box near the security desk and you canenter the draw for a great gift! Here are themost needed items:

Help us to reduceTAILGATINGTailgating, also known as piggybacking,is when a person gains unauthorized accessinto a restricted area by following anauthorized person and not showingany credentials.
Tailgating occurs when employees:
• Forget their access card or key and askother employees to give them access
• Are polite and they hold the door openfor the next person
• Are being helpful and hold the door for somebody with their hands busy
• Don’t want to challenge a personattempting to tailgate. This may bebecause the employee does not knowhow to, or is afraid to confront the otherperson. They don’t want to offend orembarrass the other person and createa scene.
When tailgating is not curtailed, it becomesa security risk as it can be used to gainaccess to a facility for various reasonsincluding theft, accessing confidentialinformation, or access to a person.
Some of the methods used are:
• Approaching the entrance at thesame time as an employee or group ofemployees and following them in
• Having something in hands (two coffeecups, bags, etc.) which “forces” theauthorized employee to hold the doorfor them
• Waiting for somebody to exitand entering the space beforethe door closes
• In general, tailgating is a formof social engineering, so actingthe part increases its chancesof success significantly. Aperson acting like they belongmakes employees believe theperson is authorized and theygive them access into the areawithout confronting them
Employee support is critical in implementinga tailgating strategy as they will be the onesenforcing the policy. They can:
• Either approach unknown persons toconfirm they are supposed to be in thearea. They should not look at this as aconfrontation, but approach the personin a friendly manner
– “Hi! Can I help you? Who are youlooking for? Let me show you wheretheir office is”
– “Hi! I see you don’t have your accesscard yet. Are you new? My name isAndrei and I work in security. Wheredo you work?”
– “Hi! I don’t remember seeing youbefore. Are you one of our vendors?”
• Or if they are uncomfortable addressing the person, report the incident to theSecurity Desk at 403-218-7733 [email protected] report should be made as soon aspossible so it can be investigated.
There is no reason for anyone who is anemployee or visitor to not have an accesscard. Our building has a Day Pass Programso that if a tenant forgets their access card,they stop at the Security Desk and they signout a Day Pass Access Card for the day.The Day Pass is programmed identically tothe tenant’s regular card so it will allowthe same access. At the same time, thetenant’s regular card is disabled for theday for security reasons.
Extra access cards are kept at theReception Desk for employees that forgettheir own, or for visitors. If employees losetheir access card, they should contact theSecurity Desk for a replacement.

Lights off for Earth Hour
Earth Hour is celebrated every year in late March, around the time of the Spring and Autumnequinoxes in the northern and southern hemispheres. This is when sunset times are almost thesame in both hemispheres. Organizers say this ensures the greatest visual impact for a global'lights out' event.
In support of Earth Hour 2014 on March 29, all four downtown Bentall Kennedy buildings turnedoff the lights between 8:30 and 9:30 pm to raise awareness about climate change and theenvironment. In so doing we joined in a now worldwide phenomenon involving millions ofpeople and organizations around the globe.
April 22 Earth DayEvery year on April 22, over a billion people in 190 countries take action for Earth Day, making itthe largest, most celebrated environmental event in the world. Over the past four years, BentallKennedy has celebrated Earth Day by providing more than 1,000 tree seedlings to our tenants sothey could plant them in their backyards. Like Earth Days of the past, Earth Day 2014 will focuson the unique environmental challenges of our time through its global theme: Green Cities.
This year we have decided to partner with Forest Recovery Canada for Earth Day and havegiven them a $4,000 donation that will allow them to plant 1000 trees in Alberta areasaffected by last year’s flood.
