• Prose is ordinary language that people use in writing such as poetry, stories, editorials, books, etc. The word prose is derived from the Latin word 'prosa' meaning straightforward.

• Prose is written in a 3rd person • in past, • colloquial language • is telling the story.

What is a prose?

• The first recognised novel in Europe is Don Quixote (1600) by M.Cervantes.

• The present English (and Spanish) word derives from the Italian novella for "new", "news", or "short story of something new Most European languages have preserved the term "romance" for extended narratives.

• In a village of La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind, there lived not long since one of those gentlemen that keep a lance in the lance-rack, an old buckler, a lean hack, and a greyhound for coursing.

• An olla of rather more beef than mutton, a salad on mostnights, scraps on Saturdays, lentils on Fridays, and a pigeon or so extra on Sundays, made away with three-quarters of his income. The rest of it went in a doublet of fine cloth and velvet breeches and shoes to match for holidays, while on week-days he made a brave figure in his best homespun.

• If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. In the first place, that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them. They’re quitee touchy about anything like that, especially my father. They’re nice and all - I’m not saying that - but they’re also touchy as hell. Besides, I’m not going to tell you my whole goodam autobiography or anything. I’ll just tell you about this madman stuff that happened to me last Christmas just before I got pretty run-down and had to come out and take it easy. I mean that’s all I told D.B. about, and he’s my brother and all. He’s in Hollywood. That isn’t too far from this crumby place, and he comes over and visits me practically every week end. He’s going to drive me home when I go home next month maybe. He just got a Jaguar.

o The sagas are epic tales, often poems, of the exploits and explorations of the Icelanders and other northerners.

o The Icelandic Sagas are one of the largest collections of remaining narratives from medieval times. With an often stark realism they detail everyday agrarian and political life, and describe adventurous Viking voyages. There are family histories, adventures and romances, and, occasionally, comedies. The sagas are as interesting to read now as they were in the era they were created. Think of them as soap-operas of the first millennium.

Lord of the Rings

When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his

eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and

Excitement in Hobbiton.

Bilbo was very rich and very peculiar, and had been the wonder of the Shire for sixty years,

ever since his remarkable disappearance and unexpected return. The riches he had brought

back from his travels had now become a local legend, and it was popularly believed,

whatever the old folk might say, that the Hill at Bag End was full of tunnels stuffed with

treasure.

And if that was not enough For fame, there was also his prolonged vigour to marvel at. Time

wore on, but it seemed to have little effect on Mr. Baggins.

At ninety he was much the same as at fifty. At ninety-nine they began

to call him _well_-preserved, but _unchanged_ would have been nearer the mark. There

were some that shook their heads and thought this was too much of a good thing; it seemed

unfair that anyone should possess (apparently) perpetual youth as well as (reputedly)

inexhaustible wealth.

The Rolling Stones

In July 1962 a musical group made its first appearance at the Marquee

Jazz Club in London. It was not until early in 1963, however, that the

entire band, consisting of Mick Jagger, Brian Jones (d. 1969), Keith

Richards, Ian Stewart (d. 1985), Bill Wyman (née Perks), and Charlie

Watts, who had missed the debut and a number of other shows

through the rest of 1962, performed together on stage at the Ricky

Tick Club in Windsor, Berkshire, outside London, playing rhythm

and blues rather than jazz. After Brian Jones’s death, Mick Taylor

joined the group but left in 1974; Ron Wood joined the band in 1976.

Bill Wyman left the band in 1993.

Bands were forming all over England at the time, and the success of

the Beatles, from Liverpool, only accelerated those formations. Most of

the bands didn’t stay together long, or they just became casual performers

on weekends. Th ere was no initial reason to see these young men, ranging

in age from 19 to 27, as any diff erent from the many other bands.
