    LONE WANDERERScreenplay By:

    Zachary Kunkel

    Based in the Fallout universe

    INT. SEWER EARLY MORNING

It is pitch black in an underground sewer. TRICKELING WATER canbe heard. Nothing can be seen. The screen is completely black. The sound of GASPS suddenly break the normal sounds of the seweras MAX awakes from being knocked out. SCUFFS of feet and COUGHSof Max can be heard.

MAX(V.O.)I couldnt remember anything. I was

confused by the dark. I didnt know howI had gotten there or why my head hurtso much. I checked myself over to make

sure I was alright, besides the headpain. I felt the empty holster on myhip. I felt the big bump on the top

right of my head. I figured somethinghad knocked me out. I couldnt rememberanything about my life but my instincts

were still keen. I knew I had to dosomething.

There are more SCUFFING sounds that infer Max is standing up inthe still unbroken darkness.

MAXHello! Anyone there!? I need help!

There is no reply. ECHOES of Maxs own voice return to him.

MAX(V.O.)That is when I remembered the sound of

my own voice. It is a strange thing notto remember the sound of your voice. Atfirst I thought it was someone yelling

back, but I was only answered bysilence after the echoes died.

A short time after Maxs voice over a light slowly brightens aways down the tunnel. Nothing can be seen turning the light on,just the flickering light of a lantern.Max becomes slightly visible in the dim light but nocharacteristics stand out yet. Max is first fixated on the lightbut after a while he inspects the tunnel, it appears to be asewer.

After a very short time of inspection Max takes a hurried yetcautious pace towards the light. Max gets close to the light andbefore getting too close he looks around for danger. He sees nodanger and approaches the table with the lantern on it.

Max steps into the light and becomes completely visible in theflickering lantern light.

MAX, is very tall and a medium built Caucasian male. He hasblack short hair that is messy and dirty. He has a stubbly blackbeard. He has ocean blue eyes that appear intense but caring. Hehas a good looking face with a rigid manly jaw. His voice isdeep and manly but still smooth, not trebly. He is wearing somekind of tattered long duster jacket open over some kind ofpadded dirty shirt with cargo pants and big military boots.

There is a square table with a chair on each side and thelantern in the center. There is a short shelf with a knife andsome burnt books on it but nothing significant. They are rightnext to the water canal of the sewer.

Max is looking around searching the area. His head is swivelingaround when suddenly he locks onto something. Max is looking ata small metallic flower lying on the ground by the edge of thebright light of the lantern but close enough to see clearly. Theflower is bent aluminum but very skillfully crafted.

The light of the lantern flickers off the metal of the flowerand flash onto Maxs eyes. Max has t he expression of a suddenepiphany.

There is a bright flash of light resembling the flicker of thelantern and fade to black

    EXT. OVERVIEW OF DETROIT MIDDAY

Detroit overview. Off in the distance there is a flash and amushroom cloud. A younger Maxs F ATHER and MOTHER are shown

watching in disbelief and quickly crawling into a bomb shelterin their house.

MAX(V.O.)I remembered it all. My father telling

me about all the chaos of when thebombs hit, the whole country being

reduced to rubble, and my mother tryingto make it sound like it was better

    than it really was.

INT. SMALL BOMB SHELTER - MIDDAY

Maxs Mother and Father are shown huddling in the dim light ofthe shelter then there is a loud RUMBLING that gets louder andlouder into silence and blackness when the light in the shelterflickers out.

    Fade to black

    EXT. COLONY EARLY MORNING

Fades into an arch in the center of a fenced in small colony. AMINISTER facing the panning out camera is standing between Maxand KRISTINA, Maxs wife, who are holding each others hands.

The minister is speaking but nothing can be heard besides Maxsoff-screen dialogue. Their families and friends are in rows ofseats watching.

MAX(V.O.)I remembered my lovely wife Kristina

and the day we were married at the archof colony with our families and the

other people of the colony watching. Iremember that being the happiest day of

    my life.

At the end of panning past all the rows, it fades to blackagain, and the next scene fades in.

KRISTINA, is an average height incredibly beautiful girl. Shehas raven black hair that is usually up in a pony-tail. Her eyesare hazel, caring and sympathetic. She is feminine but not weak.

She is capable and clever. She is usually dressed in shorts anda tank top with a leather top, and boots with white socks.

    EXT. FENCE OF COLONY NIGHT

MAX(V.O.)That was the day. I had had it with the

colony. The water was irradiated; thefood was stale and rotted. The nights

were cold and long. All I wanted was abetter life for Kristina. She deservedbetter. I guess I thought it would bebetter out here. I let that drive me

too much. That was the day I shouldvelistened to her. I was too stubborn. I

couldve dealt with the colony. Itwasnt that bad looking back. That was

the day I regret the most. I was afool

Max and Kristina are at the fence of the colony and Max isfrantically cutting the fence. Kristina is looking back checkingto see if anyone is watching.

Kristina looks at Max and begins to cry a little while appearing

to be convincing Max of something but it cannot be heard at allbecause of Maxs off -screen dialogue. Max finishes cutting thefence and he grasps Kristinas hand and t ries to pull her outthrough the hole in the fence with him. She resists, but thenMax looks her in the eyes. Max says something that cannot beheard either and then kisses her. Kristina looks overwhelmed bya decision. She looks down at the ground, then up at Max andnods. They run into the darkness outside the colony, and towardsthe city.

After Max and Kristina run off into the night the camera fades

    into darkness.

    EXT. CITY MORNING

Max is standing by a pile of scrap near some tall buildings. Hepicks out some pieces and bends them into a peddle shape. Heputs them tightly into the metal flower that is now finished. Heturns and Kristina is there picking through another pile of

rubble. Max walks up to her. She turns and sees Max with hishands behind his back. Max holds up the flower, Kristina smilesand Max walks up and puts it in her hair. As Max is putting theflower in her hair Kristina grabs his hand. She looks happy yetconcerned.

KRISTINAMax thank you, but we have to go back.Im starving more out here than I ever

was in the colony. I dont want toleave you but this is crazy. We are

going to get killed out here. We cantkeep living like this.

MAXOut here we are together! Thats all

that matters, and I can make it better.I just need time. We are never going

back to that colony. There is no lifefor you there. There is no life for us

    there!

Kristina drops Maxs hand and turns away. Fade to black.

    INT. SEWER NIGHT

Max and Kristina climb hurriedly into the sewer down a ladder.

They are both PANTING heavily. Max closes the man-hole coverquickly as he jumps in after Kristina. The only light is that ofKristins flashlight illuminating everything around. They reachthe sewer floor after climbing a small way down the ladder. There is the sound of a loud SCREECHING and POUNDING on the man-hole cover of more than one creature.

    MAX(He begins out of breath)

Dont worry, they cant open it fromabove. I checked.

KRISTINAGood. Thank God it was open. We

couldnt have kept away for muchlonger.

I know. We have to keep going though,Im sure they kno w some way of gettingdown here, and my dads revolver onlyfits six bullets. There is a lot more

    than six of em.

Max turns to follow the sewer in the only direction they can gobecause the sewer dead ends the other way. There is a flash oflight that resembles the flicker of the lantern. Fade to white.

    INT. SEWER EARLY MORNING

Max is still standing looking at the metal flower. The light isstill flickering in his eyes.

    MAX(V.O.)That was all I remembered. I didnt

remember what had knocked me out, but Ithink its just because I didnt know

what had at the time. Even if I didknow I wouldnt have believed it. I

would have thought it was some crazydream. Now I know all too well.

Max has the look of suddenly coming to his senses. He shakes hishead and rubs his eyes. He stops rubbing his eyes and suddenlylooks up. He looks worried.

    MAXKristina! Kristina where are you!

    Anybody!

Max spins around searching in the darkness. He seems suddenlylost. He is standing in a position like he is ready to run offinto the darkness of the sewer.

MAX(V.O.)At that time all I knew was that she

was gone, and the flower I had made her

was left behind. I had to find her.

Max is standing still looking around in the darkness. There isSCRAPPING of something large being lifted. Max looks towards thesound. There is a FLAP of an arm throwing something. A rock hitsthe lantern with a SHATTERING sound of breaking glass. Thebroken lantern is knocked onto the ground and abruptly goes out.Again it is pitch black in the sewer.

There are a few SCUFFS of feet again, then SILENCE.

VOICEI saw it all. The girl you were withhit you with a rock and knocked you

out. She took your gun and ran off. Youshould forget about her. She left a

long time ago and is probably far fromhere by now. Go back to wherever you

are hold up. Go back to safety. Goquickly. Run! Run now!

    MAX(V.O.)

I thought the voice sounded funny. Ihad many questions, but there was no

time. What came next left no space forconfusion; only for survival.

There is the sound of the VOICE RUNNING away from Max down thesewer.

VOICE, very little is known about the person behind the voice. The voice sounds a little funny but is very foreboding andincriminating. The voice speaks quickly in order to get the

    point across.

The sound of the Voices FOOTSTEPS die off down the sewer.

MAX(V.O.)I dont know why I didnt chase the

person behind the voice. I guess I knewthere was no way Id catch up in the

darkness. All the thinking of what thevoice had told me distracted me too. It

distracted me to the extent where I

didnt hear them coming. I now wishthey wouldve caught me. They wo uldvesaved me a lot of trouble.

The Voices footsteps are overtaken by the sounds of a STAMPEDEOF FOOTSTEPS coming from the opposite direction down the sewer.

    MAX(V.O.)

    8

It took me a bit to realize what it wasthat was coming from the other end of

the sewer. But I quickly remembered. Iran like hell the other way down the

sewer. The same way the voice had gone.

After a little time of just the sound of the STAMPEDE gettingcloser, Maxs running FOOTSTEPS can be heard. Max be gins to PANTafter a little way of running. The STAMPEDE sound gets louderand louder to make it seem closer and closer. The sound ofSCREECHING comes from the stampede when it is at its loudest.Suddenly a beam of light can be seen shinning down into thesewer. Max is running toward it, getting closer to it as theSTAMPEDE sounds get louder. Max reaches the ladder and climbsfor his life.

    EXT. DOWNTOWN DETROIT - MORNING

Max pops out of the top of the man-hole and quickly looksaround. There are buildings lining each side of a wide citystreet. There are dilapidated cars all around. There is a shadowcast half way down the west buildings by the buildings to theeast.

MAX(V.O.)I had to find a weapon. I couldnt runanymore. I remembered they dont like

the sun. All I had to do was hold them

out until the sun cast some light downin between the buildings. I wish Id

let them kill me to end my miserythere.

Max is spinning around like he did in the dark of the sewer. Hesuddenly stops spinning when he sees feet poking out from behindone of the cars. Max runs over to find a dead man propped upagainst the side of the car. The mans throat was cut and thereis blood running down his shirt. The man is still holding alarge knife covered in blood. Max wrenches the knife from the

mans dea th grip just as the creatures come pouring out of theman-hole after him.

Creatures, the creatures are humans that have gone completelyinsane from exposure to difficult conditions and radiation. Theylook like extremely emaciated hairless people and often arewearing whatever is left of the clothes they were wearing whenthey lost their minds. They have little intelligence left

    9

besides the wits to hunt in packs and occasionally pick up aweapon with which to bludgeon. They eat anything including humanflesh. One of the creatures spots Max and sprints at him on allfours.

The creature lunges at Max. Max side steps, holds out the knifeand cuts the creature from neck to belly. The creature flopsdown behind Max and gives one last SCREECH. The other creaturesall hear the noise and all at once sprint at Max.

INT. CITY MUSIC STORE - MORNING

Max runs into a store that has had the windows broken. Just asMax jumps though the window he turns and stabs the creature thatis closest to him. The creature falls onto the broken glass onthe store floor.

The store is an old music store. There are still some guitarshanging on the walls. Some pre apocalypse posters with musicianson them are still on the walls. There is what was a glasscounter, but all the glass is shattered. Behind the glasscounter there are stairs leading up to the second floor.

Max sprints and jumps over the counter. The SCREECHES andSTAMPEDE of all the creatures behind him can still be heard. Maxmakes it to the bottom of the stairs when a creature leaps fromthe counter at him. The creature has picked up a guitar by thebridge and attempts to hit Max with it. Max dodges and the

creature strikes the wall shattering the guitar. Max plunges theknife into the creatures skull. Max pulls the knife from thecreature skull and swipes at another creature that dodges onlybarely.

Max runs halfway up the stairs and halfway up his ankle isgrabbed. He falls and spins aiming the knife out from his belly.A creature leaps onto the knife, gives a few last MOANS, andslips off dead. Max throws the body down the stairs at the othercreatures. The other creatures hands reaching up at him like ahorrifying crowd catch the body and tear into it like they have

been doing with their other fallen companions. Max runs up thestairs turning abruptly at the top to run to the right.

Upstairs in the music store there is a desk near the windowsfacing the street at one end of a big room. There are shelveshalf full of old records and CDs. There are several empty guitarstands and a few guitars lying on the ground. There are drumsand a few other instruments lying around.

Max runs to the desk. He peeks out the window to see the sunlight has almost reached the sidewalk on the other end of thestreet.Max can still hear the SCREAMS and SCREECHES of the creaturestearing their dead companions apart at the bottom of the stairs.

MAX(V.O.)I knew I couldnt hold them off for

much longer with just the knife. I hadto get to the sunlight, but in my ownstupidity I had trapped myself. I had

    no other choice.

Max looks out the window again at the sun light that seems tohave not moved at all. Max back away from the window and runs tothe top of the stairs where he tips a shelf to hold them off alittle longer. Just as he does so several of the creatures comeflying up the stairs at him. Max turns and runs towards thedesk. The creatures climb over the desk with ease and chaseafter Max. Just before they catch him Max jumps up and off thedesk and through the window breaking the glass.

    EXT. DOWNTOWN DETROIT - MORNING

Max flies through the air and comes crashing down onto the roofof the car that had the dead man propped against it. The body

has been torn into pieces by the creatures. The glass comesshattering onto the ground after him. Several of the creatureshad jumped after him and they come to a SCREECHING end when theyland head first on the pavement beside the car.

Surprisingly the fall did not severely injure Max who hassustained only minor cuts. Some blood is dripping off of hisbrow. Max leaps of the hood. He looks back into the store seeingmany of the creatures still clogging the bottom of the staircasestill trying to chase him up and out. He runs across the streetinto the sun light that has just reached the side walk. Max

turns, now in the light to see the creatures have noticed hisnew location and run towards him. They come to a sudden haltwhen they notice the line of sunlight that separates their preyfrom them. A few of the creatures leap at Max anyway but theyimmediately become weakened in the sun and Max cuts them downwith ease.

  • 8/13/2019 Lone Wanderer

    11/23

    11

The creatures, after standing in a line and SCREECHING at Maxfor quite a while realize they have to leave their prey beforethe light overtakes them. They all run over and slither backdown the same man-hole they and Max had come out of, stillSCREECHING as if chasing him while they retreat.

Max drops the knife and slides down the wall he was leaningagainst. He looks at himself. His clothes and knife are drenchedin blood. He sits in the sun for a while.

MAX(V.O.)I remember thinking that it was the

thought of surviving to find Kristinathat kept me going. I finally had some

time to process what the voice had toldme in the sewer. I didnt believe a

word of it. I thought Kristina had tobe out there somewhere. Who would take

her and knock me out. It made no sense. In any case I had rekindled my skill to

fight, and I was prepared to doanything to find Kristina. I figured

that I first should go check thehideout the two of us had south of

here. I knew this area well and knewexactly where I was and how to get

back. I figured if I went back I couldrecoup and recover from my cuts and

bruises quickly before I set out tofind her. I shouldve just listened to

the voice in the sewer and forgot abouther, but I couldnt.

Max stands up and quickly checks around. He sees nothing ofinterest and sets off south towards the hideout.

Max walks for a bit but soon begins to limp. He GROANS andreaches down and grabs his ankle. He sits on the hood of a carand inspects his sprain. He rubs it for a bit then looks up to

see a pharmacy down the street a ways. He slips his boot back onand walks to the store. There is a sign on the door that reads:No more supplies! Stay out!

The pharmacy was a single floor building on the corner of twocity streets. All of its windows were boarded up from theinside. It had a big billboard sign out front that used to say

  • 8/13/2019 Lone Wanderer

    12/23

    12

the name of the pharmacy but all the letters had fallen out fromyears of disuse.

MAX(V.O.)My ankle was throbbing. I needed

bandages or something. Usuallypharmacies or any stores with usefulsupplies would have been completely

plundered years ago. But I had to try.I thought someone might have just putthe sign up to keep plunderers away.

That was a common practice. So Idecided to go in. I knew the dangers,

but I wouldve never found Kristinawith my ankle like that. Then again, Inever shouldve looked for her in the

    first place.

    INT. PHARMACY AFTERNOON

Max walks into the store. The bell still hooked up RINGS as thedoor opens. It startles Max and he hesitates as he passesthrough the doorway. He steps all the way in and the door shutbehind him. Max looks around the store.

The inside of the pharmacy is a mid-sized room with severalempty shelves in rows running from one side to the other. It isdark beside a few beams of light shining through the boarded upwindows. There are boxes of medicines scattered on the floor butthey are obviously empty. At one end of the room there is acounter with a glass sliding door with cracks and what lookslike bullet holes but still intact. Behind the counter isanother room that is even darker.

Max checks a few of the boxes lying around only to find they areall empty.

MAX(V.O.)I was looking for bandages or painkillers. When I didnt find any I

    shouldve left.

Max searches around for a bit more then heads for the bigsliding glass door and the counter. He approaches the counter

  • 8/13/2019 Lone Wanderer

    13/23

    13

and sees the sliding door is padlocked shut from the other side. There is a door off to the side. Max walks up to it and triesthe handle but it is locked. Just after Max tries the handle hehears the RING of the bell on the door and the sound ofFOOTSTEPS come walking in through the door.

Max quickly jumps behind a shelf before whomever it is can seehim. Max cannot see the person either. There is SILENCE for abit. Then there are a few FOOTSTEPS of someone wearing boots. There is the sound of medicine boxes being DROPPED. The loudsound of a gun COCKING breaks the ambient noises.

    SURVIVORShow yourself!

Max looks from side to side. He doesnt come out. He waits a fewseconds.

SURVIVORI know youre behind that shelf over

there by the counter. Come out or Illshoot you out.

Max moves to show himself, but hesitates right before he pokeshis head out. He shuts his eyes tight for a second then opensthem slowly and pops out from behind the shelf. The knife heused to kill all the creatures is loosely set in his gunholster.

SURVIVOR, the survivor is an older man with grey hair and a greybeard that covers all of his chin in one big tuft. His mediumheight and dressed in dirty ripped jeans, an old button up whiteshirt, and a heavy jacket over top. He is carrying a long barrelpump shotgun and has a bandolier of shotgun shells on the insideof his jacket around his torso from shoulder to waist. His voiceis gruff and low in a way you can tell he is older but he isvery fit for an older man.

    MAX

(As he comes out from cover)Dont shoot!

The SURVIVOR aims his gun more intense at Max now that Max isout of cover.

    SURVIVORAnd why shouldnt I?

  • 8/13/2019 Lone Wanderer

    14/23

    14

Max starts to BREATH HEAVILY, and looks like he is trying hardto think of a reason why he shouldnt get shot.

MAXMy ankle got hurt fighting some of

those weird creatures just a few hoursago. It stated to swell and hurt realbad so I needed some pain killers. I

    thought this would be

    SURVIVOR(Cuts Max off mid-sentence)

Did you not read the sign? There are nomore supplies!

Max looks like he is trying hard to think of what to say again.

MAX(V.O.)I knew anything I was going to say

would just make him even more hostile. But then he saw it and it was too late

to try and calm him down.

The survivor switches his eyes from being locked on Max to theknife in Maxes holster. The survivor lowers his gun a little and

then switches his gaze back to Max looking angrier than ever.

    SURVIVOR(In a rushed, worried tone)

That knife. The knife in your holster.Take it out and show it to me.

Max looks confused down at the knife and then back up at thesurvivor.

    SURVIVOR

Do it now! Slowly though, dont tryanything funny! I swear ill blow your

    head off!

MAXOkay! Im going to pull it out real

    slowly.

  • 8/13/2019 Lone Wanderer

    15/23

    15

Max reaches down in a very obvious revealing fashion and pinchedthe handle end of the knife in between his index finger andthumb. He lifts is straight out of the holster slowly andsmoothly. Max holds the knife out in both hands showing it tothe survivor.

The survivor looks suddenly overcome with grief and lets hisguard down a bit.

MAX(V.O.)I thought about throwing the knife. I

wasnt half bad when I did it as a kidat the colony but I couldnt bring

myself to do it. The man was overtakenby grief. I couldnt end someones lifewhile they were like that. At the timeI never wouldve gone out like that. Iwouldve kept fighting, but now I know

    how he feels

The man weeps for a bit then looks up at Max even more enragedthan before.

SURVIVORWhere did you get that knife?

    MAXI

    SURVIVOR(Cuts Max off again)

Dont you lie to me! Tell me where yougot it!

MAX(V.O.)By that time I figured the man leaning

against the car was someone he lovedand he thought I had killed him and

taken his knife , but I couldnt think

what to tell the man to try and savemyself. So I told the truth, hoping he

    believed me.

The survivor is softly sobbing every once in a while letting outa sad WIMPER. He is still holding the gun pointing at Max but heis less intense and more thrown off by extreme grief. A fewtears run down and wet his face.

  • 8/13/2019 Lone Wanderer

    16/23

    16

MAX(After a short pause Max speaks slowly

and calmly)I was down in the sewers looking for mywife and I was chased out by a stampede

of those creatures. I needed a weaponto defend myself and I found a man

leaned up against a car with his throatslit by this knife. The knife was in

his lap and I took. During the fight iswhen my ankle got hurt. I swear thats

the truth. I didnt kill him, he killedhimself I swear.

The survivor shuts his eyes tight. He lets his guard completelydown and drops the gun to his side and grabs his face with hisother hand. He SOBS into his hand for a bit then takes his handaway and still sobbing looks up at Max. Max is still standingholding out the knife in both hands. The survivors expressionchanges from sadness back to being enraged. He raises the gunand points it a Max. Max lifts his hands up.

MAXI swear I found him dead. Im so sorrythis happened. I lost my wife recentlyand Im looking for her and I would do

the same thing if I found her dead. Washe your son?

The survivor changing between extreme sadness and anger nods hishead.

    MAX

Please. Im sorry about your son butplease just let me go to find my wife.I wont take anything ill just leave.Ill walk right ou t the door, nobody

else will get hurt and youll never seeme again.

The man looks at Max through his teary eyes and lets out a ROARthrough his tightly clenched teeth then points the shotgun athis own head.

MAX(Max says quickly as he puts down his

    hands)No! He wouldnt want this!

The survivor lets his finger off the trigger a bit and looks atMax again seeming to be listening very closely.

MAX(V.O.)I couldnt let him end it like that. At

the time I didnt understand hissadness. Now I know exactly how he

feels, I shouldve let him go meet hisson.

MAX(After a little time to think what to

say)Your son, he wouldnt want this. You

can keep going for your son. This isntthe way to go, you have to keep

fighting no matter how bad it seems.Fight for your son. It isnt your fault

he is dead and even if it was that isno reason to kill yourself. You can

always come back, you have to! Do itfor your son.

The survivor still sobbing drops his gun and looks Max in theeyes.

    SURVIVOR

    (He gestures at the door)Go

Max hesitates a little but eventually he begins to walk outhurriedly. Right before Max walks out the door he sets the knifeon the counter by the door and takes one last look at thesobbing survivor who is looking away before he pushes the dooropen. The bell RINGS and Max walks out.

    PLOT POINT II

    EXT. AFTERNOON DOWNTOWN DETROIT

Max is walking down a street of Detroit. He looks more indespair than ever. He walks for a while

MAX(V.O.)I had to find her. I had done too muchnot to find her. I couldnt live with

myself if I didnt find her, but Ithought of the survivor and what I had

told him. That kept me going. Itshouldnt have though. If I only knew

thatd I be where I am now, I wouldvejust given up my search.

Max looks down at his holster and the gun he had taken from oneof the people back at the place Kristina and him used to be holdup in.

MAX(V.O.)I had killed all those people for

nothing. All I had to show was that gunthat I wish I had never taken and a

hunch. I thought that I could use the

gun to injure the robed person that theman told me about before he died. Isuspected the robed person and the

voice that talked to me in the sewerwas the same person. I was all to

right. I shouldve never gone back tothe sewer to look.

Max walks for a short while longer looking down at the ground.Max sees the Man torn apart by the creatures that was the son ofthe survivor.

Max looks down the street towards the sewer man-hole and seesthe robed person putting something on top of the man-hole coverunder a rock. Max looks closely but the robed person looks up atMax, drops whatever it is and darts away in the other direction.

Max begins to chase the person down the street dodging all thecars and rubble. Max is limping from his ankle. Max runs by theman-hole cover with what looks like a note on top under the rockbut he doesnt stop.

    Max(Panting from running)

Please stop! I just want to ask yousomething.

The robed person begins to get away from Max and Max looksworried. He is limping after as fast as he can. Max starts toget visibly mad and is PANTING loudly.

    MAXStop or Ill shoot!

    I mean it!

The robed person is getting far away from Max and he looks veryworried. He stops limping pulls his gun out quick and takes aim.

    MAXLast warning!

The robed person doesnt stop. Max checks his aim and fires. There is a loud BANG of the gunshot. The bullet hits the robedperson in the upper back near the back bone through to thelungs. Blood sprays from the impact and the robed person fallsface first onto the pavement with a SCRATCHING sound. Therespatter of blood on the ground and a streak of blood where therobed person skidded on the pavement.

MAX(V.O.)I didnt want it to kill, just injure.I guess I missed, or I was so angry I

d idnt care. I wish I had never shot.

Smoke is pouring from the barrel of the revolver that Max tookfrom the man he questioned. Max is still standing when henotices he missed and makes a worried face.

Max begins to run towards the robed person who is lyingmotionless on the pavement surrounded by blood.

Max reaches the body. Max points his gun at the person and kicksthe body over.

ROBED PERSON, the robed person is noticeably a girl from figurewhen you are close. She is average height but the rest of thefeatures are hard to distinguish since she is dressed in blackrobes from head to toe. She is wearing black boots and a blackcloth covering her whole face except her eyes that are hazel.

MAX(V.O.)I wish the creatures had come out rightthen and torn the flesh off my bones soI wouldve never known what I had done.

But they didnt and now it has to endlike this.

Max crouches down and looks at the body for a quick second. Henotices the person is still barely alive. He reaches anduncovers the mask as he opens his mouth to ask a quick question.

He uncovers the mask and stares in to Kristinas pale face. Shelooks Max in the eyes. Max face is overcome with horror and hiswhole body tenses up.

    KRISTINA

    (In her last breathe)Im sorry

Max falls b ack onto his back away from Kristinas body. His faceis still full of terror.

Max cups his face in his hands and weeps for a while. His loudCRIES echo between the buildings of the Detroit street.

After a while of Max sitting there with his face in his hands heuncovers his face and looks at Kristina. He sees she has the

metal flower he made her in her hair. She has a gun holster withhis fathers gun in it on her hip. Her blood is spattered allaround.

Max stands up. He moves slowly and stoically. He walks over tothe man-hole cover to read the note. He walks up falls to hisknees and rolls the rock away.

It takes him a while to clear the tears from his eyes to be ableto read the note but after a while of wiping he can. He picks upthe note and brings it close to his face.

The paper is worn weathered but the hand writing is stillpristine, and legible. Max takes a few deep breathes and closeshis eyes tight a few times to hold back tears. He reads.

MAX(V.O.)(Max reads the letter in his head while

the screen stays fixed on him)To Max from your loving wife

Max, I love you but this world out hereis not for me. I know you hated the

colony but all this time we havebeen out here and all it has brought us

where I will be waiting for you. If youdecide to stay out here remember I willalways love you and hope you are safe, but please Max, please come back. Im

since you would never let me leave togo back on my own.

wouldnt mind me keeping myself safe. Also I came back for the flower you

made me. It fell out of my hair in thesewer.

    Your wife, Kristina.

Max falls back and weeps for a while again with his face in hishands and the letter still in his hand. Eventually he stops andlooks up.

Max stands up slowly and stoically again. He walks over toKristinas body and picks it up. He sets the gun he took fromthe man he questioned down on a car and takes his fathers gun

Max takes the flower out of her hair and puts his fathers gunin her hand. He fills the grave covering Kristina in dirt. Hefinds two sticks and lashes them into a cross with his shoelace. He plunges it into the dirt at the top of the grave and puts themetal flower in the ground right in front of the cross.

Max stands still looking at the flower. He looks up at the skyand takes in a deep BREATHE.

Max takes the letter out of his pocket and writes downeverything that had happened to him. His mouth doesnt move buthis voice is obviously narrating what he is writing.

    GUARDIts Max! Open the gate!

The gate opens up and out comes Kristinas parents. They lookhappy to see Max but worried about their daughter.

Max takes the note out of his pocket and unfolds it. A loudRINGING like that of Maxs ears popping overtakes all sound. Maxholds the note in his. Max pulls the gun out of his holster andholds it to his chin.

Kristinas parents start to yell and run at max but you cannothear them. All sound cuts out and the screen goes immediately black. It issilent for a bit then there is a loud CLICK of metal hittingmetal. The screen comes back to Max with his eyes shut tight andthe gun still pressed against his chin. He takes the gun awayfrom his chin and opens it up. There are no bullets in in but inone of the cartridges there is a small slip of paper.

Max pulls the paper out of the cartridge and sees it has writingon it. Max reads it.

SURVIVOR(O.S.)(The survivors voice reads the letter

as Max does)Your wife wouldnt want this. You cankeep going, keep fighting for her no

matter how bad it seems. You can alwayscome back and you will come back from

    this, you have to.

Max looks up at Kristinas parents running at him. He smiles and

puts the gun back in his holster. The camera pans out asKristina and Maxs parents come out to greet Max.
