3. What is Sustainability anyway? Development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (The Brundtland Commission 1987). The concept of living within our limits Sustainability is not just about cleaning up your own room, its about keeping tidy an even bigger room that belongs to everyone The Circular Economyhttp://www.youtube.com/user/made2bemadeagain 4. We only have One Planet If everyone in the world lived like we do in the UK... We would need three planets! 5. Why sustainability is important to the HE sector? 7. Carbon / Energy Reduction Target: 43% reduction in scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions by 2020(based on a 2005/6 baseline) Overall, carbon emissions at 139 universities rose by 3.9% between 2005 and 2010. 8. Waste

  • Each year the UK generates 280 million tonnes of waste (DEFRA).
  • Equivalent of over 70 million fully grown male elephants (more than one per person)!
  • Landfill Tax is currently 56 per tonne
  • London landfill sites are now full
  • SE landfill sites full by 2013
  • Londoners produce enough waste to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool every 30 minutes
  • 1/3 rdof all UK food ends up in the bin
