Day 19 Sunday 31st January This morning tour the ancient city of Angkor Thom. Angkor Thom was the last capital of the Great

Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman VII, surrounded by an 8m high wall, drawing a perfect square. Enter the city through the ancient South Gate, an impressive stone gate carved with elephants and four giant faces. On each side of the entrance path a row of 54 gods and demons hold the sacred Naga snake. From here you will continue to Bayon temple which is at the exact centre of the city. This 12th Century masterpiece is a study in grandeur and is renowned for its 54 towers with enigmatic faces representing the 54 provinces of the Great Khmer Empire. The Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King are also must see visits as they’re both known for their intricate bas-reliefs. Return to the hotel for a break during the midday heat. In the afternoon visit the famous temple of Ta Prohm, built in the mid-12th to early 13th Centuries. Ta Prohm is unique in that it has been left largely as it was found: overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground. This makes Ta Prohm one of the most picturesque and memorable of the Angkor temples. End your day at the magnificent Angkor Wat. Built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the early 12th Century, Angkor Wat is constructed following the model of the temple mountain symbolising Mount Meru, the home of the gods. Inside the temple the walls are covered with stone carvings and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the wars Suryavarman II fought during his reign. Angkor Wat is well known for the images of more than 2,000 Apsara dancers decorating the temple and construction of the temple is thought to have taken around 30 years of intensive labour. Today Angkor Wat features on Cambodia's national flag as the temple symbolises the soul of the Khmer people. You will be there during sunset time, when Angkor Wat is less visited and the Apsaras will shine in the most beautiful light. South East Asia’s largest freshwater lake with its size varying greatly depending on the season, as it swells to about 4 times its normal size in during the wet season. Board a local boat and visit Kampong Phluck, a village where we’ll see houses on stilts that are submerged when Tonlé Sap Lake extends. From Tonlé Sap you will to the countryside of Siem Reap Province to see the “gem” of the Angkor area, the pretty temple of Banteay Srey, which is best viewed in the warm afternoon light. The so-called “Citadel of the Women” remains the best preserved temple in Cambodia. It displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art as this small temple is noted for its truly remarkable fine bas-reliefs. Banteay Srey is unique in that it is constructed of pink sandstone, which is seen nowhere else in Angkor. You will have the possibility to stop at local communities along the way and your guide will help you to interact with the local community to learn about the way of life here. Seize the opportunity to taste Palm Wine and Palm Sugar (seasonal) and other popular local produce. On the way back to Siem Reap you will stop at the Landmine Museum which promotes mine awareness and education. Mr. Aki Ra, the museum founder was a child soldier during the Khmer Rouge regime and is working today as a de-miner. The museum serves also as a rescue centre for a number of landmine amputee children that Aki Ra has brought off Phnom Penh’s streets or from impoverished rural communities. Day 22 Wednesday 3rd February After breakfast you will drive out to the Buddha Park (approx 45 minutes).

Arrive at the Buddha Park and enjoy a stroll around the park. Also known as Xieng Khuan, this unusual park is filled with over 200 Buddhist and Hindu statues. The tranquil setting along the Mekong River is a contrast to the slightly eccentric sculptures built in 1958 by a Laos shaman. After visiting the Buddha Park, head back to Vientiane, stopping first at Mai Savanh, a family-run shop specialising in high quality silk products. Continue to the Lao Disabled Women Development Center, which aims to bring knowledge and skills to disabled women so that they can become self-sufficient, productive members of the community. Enjoy lunch at Makphet Restaurant. Established by Friends International, Makphet is a charity-run restaurant aiming to train the area’s street children in the hospitality industry. This afternoon you have a half day city tour to discover the hidden charms of Vientiane, whose name means ‘the city of sandal wood’. Your tour begins at the serene Wat Sisaket, one of the most beautiful temples in the capital, and its breezy teak covered hallways are filled with thousands of miniature Buddha statues. Continue on to the Presidential Palace. Although you are not allowed inside, you will still get a glimpse into the town’s colonial past as this building formerly served as the French governor’s palace. Continue to the Patuxay monument, Laos’ version of the Arc de Triomphe, where you can climb the stairs to the roof for sweeping panoramic views of the city. Finish at That Luang, the holiest site in Laos. Constructed by King Setthethirat in the 16th century, the temple is resplendent as the sun is shines upon its towering golden spire. Return to your hotel to freshen up. For your final evening in Laos, you will have the unique opportunity to experience one of Laos’ oldest traditions: the Baci ceremony. The Baci is a mix of animist and Buddhist beliefs and its purpose is to call back escaped spirits to the body. The ceremony takes place before major events such as weddings, births, travel, welcoming friends and farewells. Overnight Ansara Hotel (Trio Savvy Room) Today’s meal inclusions – Breakfast & Lunch

Prabang. QV101 departs Vientiane at 11:30, arrive Luang Prabang at 12:15. Upon arrival in Luang Prabang your guide will meet you at the airport for a private transfer to your hotel for check-in. Nestled between the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers and surrounded by lush forested mountains, Luang Prabang is one of the jewels of Indochina. This charming UNESCO World Heritage listed city is the spiritual capital of the country with a host of temples and scores of saffron robed monks. Time runs slowly here and endless hours can be spent meandering the small laneways past attractive colonial buildings or soaking up the view from a riverside café. In the late afternoon climb the 328 steps that lead to the top of the hill where you will be rewarded with marvellous views of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers, the neighbouring mountain ranges and the city. The sunset views are particularly spectacular. Descend the steps on the opposite side of the hill and stroll to the nearby colourful night market. Every evening along the main street the area’s ethnic minority people gather to sell their handicrafts. The quiet evening atmosphere and soft lights of the stalls combine to create a magical market setting from which to shop for souvenirs. Overnight Villa Maly (Superior Room) Today’s meal inclusions – Breakfast

Day 24 Friday 5th February For early risers there is a very special dawn visit to watch the monks collecting alms. As the sun

begins to rise, long lines of orange-robed monks leave their pagodas and walk barefoot down the streets collecting offerings from Luang Prabang residents. It is a beautiful, serene ceremony that highlights the spiritualism of the Laos people. A short drive brings you to the historic old town of Luang Prabang and the bustling fresh market. Accompanied by your guide you will walk through the rows of stalls looking at what is on sale. The locals come here every day to shop for vegetables, fruits and other exotic specialties. Return to your hotel for breakfast. After breakfast visit the National Museum. Once the Royal Palace of Laos, the National Museum is filled with art, artefacts and jewels and a visit examines the history and rich culture of the country. Continue your private tour of Luang Prabang by visiting some of the city’s most important temples. Start at Wat Visoun, where you will see the famous Watermelon Stupa, shaped like the fruit from which it takes its name. This temple was destroyed in 1887 by the invading Black Flags from China and was restored in 1930 by Buddhist monks and local people. We will also visit Wat Aham where you will see the altar of the 2 guardian spirits of Luang Prabang. Enjoy lunch in town at Tamarind restaurant where you will have a chance to sample unusual local specialities not available back home.

After lunch you will drive 45 minutes out of town to visit the beautiful Kuang Si Waterfalls. Stop en route to visit a small village which is home to one of the area’s many ethnic minorities. You will have an opportunity to learn about their traditions and culture, much of which has remained unchanged for centuries. Upon reaching the falls, relax and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. The jungle and dense woods surrounding the falls is perfect for exploring on foot. For the adventurous, it is possible to walk to the top of the falls via a steep track where stunning views await you at the top. These waterfalls cascade down a multilevel limestone formation creating a series of turquoise blue pools perfect for swimming in on a hot day (Note: when bathing, please be respectful and wear a sarong and a T shirt). Before you leave you might like to visit the bear sanctuary which is next to the falls, run by Free The Bears Fund Inc. There are currently 23 Asiatic Black Bears living in the sanctuary. The main threat to these bears is poaching due to the use of their bile in Chinese medicine. You can read about their habits and observe their playful nature, whilst learning about the difficulties they are facing. Overnight Villa Maly (Superior Room) Today’s meal inclusions – Breakfast & Lunch

Day 25 Saturday 6th February This morning venture to Luang Prabang’s peninsula where the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers
