london, canada 2018/19

I went to get my hair cut recently at United Kutz, a five-minute walk from the Grand Theatre. I was excited to tell Kwami and his team that at the heart of this new season we are presenting a production called Barber Shop Chronicles. It premiered at the National Theatre of London, England this past year and will be on a North American tour stopping at the Grand — the only Canadian venue. I’m excited about Kwami’s barbers meeting these British actors.

For we are indeed

WORLD CURIOUS, LONDON PROUD. Welcome.

A Spontaneous Theatre production by Rebecca Northan

OCTOBER 11 to 13 McM A NUS STAGE

One audience member. One love story. Ten beats per line.

When William Shakespeare finds himself with writer’s block, his Muse delivers inspiration in the form of a surprise guest with a story to tell. At each performance, a willing patron is invited on stage to sit down with the Bard and share their personal love story. Every life is Shakespearean.

Award-winning actor/improviser Rebecca Northan and a cast of some of Canada’s top improv talent spontaneously create Shakespeare’s “lost play” based on one person’s real-life romantic adventures — in iambic pentameter.

From the creator of Blind Date comes her latest imagining. We are thrilled to be part of this new work in progress, and collaborating with the Stratford Festival. Blind Date has been seen around the world — imagine where this might travel. – DENNIS

THEWARS Timothy Findley’s THE WA RSAdapted and Directed by Dennis Garnhum

OCTOBER 23 to NOV EMBER 11 SPRIET STAGE Opens October 26

This fall we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War and honour the sacrifices of our soldiers past and present with the Governor General Award-winning story, The Wars. By one of Canada’s most distinguished authors, this Canadian classic follows young Robert Ross from his Toronto family home to the muddy battlefields of France. Intense and powerful, The Wars reminds us of the sacrifice of our soldiers in the “war to end all wars.”

One of the greatest people I have ever worked with was Timothy Findley. He was intensely patriotic and his passion for Canada was extraordinary. When he talked about this novel, he reminded me that we all live many wars in our lives, and it is how we navigate them that defines us. – DENNIS

Newsroom, political platform, local hot spot, confession box, preacher-pulpit, and football stadium. For generations, African men have gathered in barber shops to discuss the world. This dynamic new play leaps from a barber shop in London to Johannesburg, Harare, Kampala, Lagos, and Accra. These are places where the ban-ter can be barbed and the truth is always telling.

The National Theatre is my (other) favourite theatre in the world. When I saw this play there recently, the explosive energy of these artists made for a thrilling night. Hilarious, joyful, impactful, and made for today. The Grand proudly welcomes London to London. – DENNIS

NOV EMBER 20 to DECEMBER 1 McM A NUS STAGE

The true story of a family’s journey of raising their son Walker, severely disabled due to a rare genetic disorder. This award-winning memoir by cbc Radio and Globe and Mail journalist Ian Brown, powerful and moving in print, is even more extraordinary on stage. Director Chris Abraham reflects upon the impact of the play in that “it challenges us to think about the fundamentally fragile and uncertain nature of parenting and of life.”

Raw honesty abounds in this production. It begins with Ian’s story, is illuminated by Emil’s theatrical-ity, and explodes with the bold acting of the Crow’s Theatre company. It left me shattered when I saw this production, and I will never forget it. Never. – DENNIS

JA NUA RY 22 to FEBRUA RY 9 SPRIET STAGE Opens January 25

“Now that I’m dead, I know everything.” So begins Penelope, the famously faithful wife of the Greek hero Odysseus, speaking from the afterlife in Hades. This all-female company retells Homer’s Odyssey through Penelope’s eyes: her husband’s return, along with vengeance and a shocking and violent injustice. Canadian literary icon Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid’s Tale, Alias Grace) flips the classical myth on its head, giving voice to the chorus of ten handmaidens. With acerbic wit and in- spired originality, this contemporary take on an ancient tale is Atwood at her finest.

It is one thing to read Atwood, another to experience her words on the stage. Listen closely as these women from ancient times speak modern truths. – DENNIS

The story of the Donnellys — the shocking massacre of Johannah Donnelly and her dangerously devoted sons in nearby Lucan in 1880 — can still freeze the blood. With a pulsing rock musical score, the Donnellys come back to life to haunt us once more. Edmonton’s Catalyst Theatre returns with its powerhouse cast, led by the towering performance of Jan Alexandra Smith, in this tale of brutal revenge and frontier justice.

Vigilante played to sold-out houses at the Grand two years ago, and London has inundated us with requests to bring it back. Let the music overtake you and the stories chill. The Donnellys return — careful what you wish for. – DENNIS

Directed by Djanet Sears Starring Nigel Shawn Williams

M A RCH 19 to A PRIL 6 SPRIET STAGE Opens March 22

All great plays are about family. Set in Pittsburgh in the 1950s, a former Negro League baseball star now supports his family by working as a trash collector. The literal fence in the play is set in contrast to the poetic ones that Troy, his wife Rose, and his sons keep building up and trying to tear down. You’ll see why this is one of the most honoured plays of American theatre, winning the Pulitzer Prize along with Tony and Drama Desk awards for best new play.

A contemporary classic. The play is grounded in gritty realism while sailing into lyrical inspiration at the same time. It leaves me both uplifted and devastated. That’s brilliant writing. – DENNIS

Considered one of the greatest musicals ever, presented in a gritty, stripped-down, intimate setting that will extend from the McManus lobby and bar to the stage. Some stories become more relevant years or decades after they premiere. This musical is set against a backdrop where a brilliant society becomes a scary, scary world: freedoms become restricted, being unique becomes a threat. Sound familiar? – DENNIS

World Premiere Halloween 2020 – Celebrating the Grand’s 50th Anniversary Season

Canadian theatre tycoon Ambrose Small built London’s Grand Theatre in 1901. On December 2, 1919 he vanished, never to be found. Set against the wildly scandal-ous vaudeville era, Ambrose Small will invite audiences to explore the Grand as an interactive, site-specific musical adventure.

Starlight ToursA musical drama centred on events reported in Saskatchewan in the early 2000s that trace back to the 1970s. A series of investigations revealed a practice by the Saskatoon police of taking First Nations people to the city limits and abandoning them at the side of the road in the dead of winter. The practice became known as “starlight tours.”

Mi’kmaq artist, musician, composer, and playwright Cathy Elliot was originally commissioned to write the book. She passed away suddenly following the first workshop of Starlight Tours with the Canadian Music Theatre Project at Sheridan College. In honour of Cathy we will con-tinue to develop Starlight Tours with Writer Melanie Florence and Leslie Arden as Composer and Lyricist.

An Undiscovered ShakespearePartnering with the Stratford Festival, compass is proud to support the development of Spontaneous Theatre’s latest improvised creation. An Undiscovered Shakespeare will present a workshop on the McManus Stage for a limited special event run, October 11 to 13, 2018.
