Public Sector Projects

The Santa Clara Senior Center, a Mediterranean-style structure, has existed on Fremont Street in Santa Clara since the 70’s. Included were an assembly hall and kitchen facilities, classrooms, a billiard and card room, craft areas and a small dance and fitness area. Several years ago, we developed a program to add aquatics and a significant expansion to the fitness and the classroom spaces. The public approval process was long and tenuous. Prodis Associates prepared schematic plans for several alternate designs on an adjacent park but it was finally decided not to expand into the park but stay within its own site. This necessitated replacing the single story wing with a two-story structure that housed the displaced functions as well as the new. Only the central entry, the meeting hall, kitchen and a small portion of the administrative area were retained. Final approvals were secured after coordination with and completion of presentations to the Senior Commission, The Parks Commission, the Planning Commission and the City Council. Our services included design, construction documents and construction administration.

Agnew State Hospital had a long history in Santa Clara. During its heyday, it was known for progressive and compassionate treatment techniques for the mentally ill. After the hospital was closed by the State of California, in 1995, a cemetery site was deeded to the City of Santa Clara to be developed into a historical museum. The museum building, originally constructed after the historic 1906 earthquake with materials salvaged by hospital workers, was moved to the cemetery site and restored in 2009. Prodis Associates designed and directed the site planning and building restoration which included special lighting, HVAC control and included the design of the cabinetwork and display cases. The museum houses artifacts and the displays document the history of the hospital and its workers.
