EARLY YEARSMy Father was my teacher, mentor, and outdoor painting companion until 1974, when he died suddenly of a heart attack in his sleep. He was the major influence
on me to promote my career as an artist. He encouraged me to enter a poster contest at the age of 7 years, and I won first prize with 2nd & 3rd prize, teenagers.
When I was 13 I won an international contest promoting humane education, which appeared in the Globe and Mail 1947.
My Father was the first Director of Art at the Toronto Board of Education (1947).

North West Territories
The following paintings are a selection of work that was exhibited in the offices of Strathcona Mineral Services’office in Toronto, and were purchased by the
companies and their clients. The trip took place in July 1985, and included an excursion to Pangnirtung Baffin Island.
The majority of the large watercolour paintings were done on location under the midnight sun. Numerous sketches were made in coloured markers, and later executed in oil or acrylic paintings. The Inuit children were painted on location.

SUNLIGHT AT NIGHTThe bright glow of sun all day and night, kept children up and playing most of the night.
I found that I only needed 2 or 3 hours of sleep. I too, painted at night I found the sun so great, I painted more at 2 or 3 am than during the day. The sunlight seemed to give me more energy.

KOREAN SHIPThe first ship of the year arrived, mid July, behind the ice breaker. It was 3:00 am and the midnight
sun was glowing brightly. All the children and workers at the mine stood on the dock watching. This was the event of the year for the community.

ARCTIC COTTONWith 24 hours of sunlight in June and July a beautiful pink & white flower called ‘Arctic Cotton’ grows wild. I was asked to join a school group of young children on a picnic to Arctic Bay. This was the scene. There was a small stream where the children played, and a fire was built to roast hot dogs. A large stereo was brought from the bus, and the children danced
among the Artic Cotton flowers. I was able to sketch some of their faces as they were watched me curiously.

TENTING ON BEACHThe Mother hid in the tent and the children liked to talk to me.
They talked of catching seals, and how good seal meat was, as they rubbed their tummies. They told me that in summertime, they liked to pitched their tent below the warehouse,
and played on the black sandy beach.

PANGNIRTUNG BAFFIN ISLAND1985
A selection of paintings, of which the landscapes were done on location.
PANGNIRTUNGPangnirtung had beautiful sunsets. There was a period of night darkness.
The fishing was very good, and I had lots of arctic char. Here, I could sleep at night. It was a typical Inuit settlement. The plane waited, after landing, for people to
collect their luggage off the runway, before it could leave. Reservations had been made at Peyton Lodge. There was nothing in sight, except a bus with NO wheels. I went to a hut and asked where Peyton Lodge was, and a young woman said that’s where I’m going. She was the owner, and I asked for a room at the front, thinking of the A.Y Jackson painting of the water and cliffs. I was escorted to the basement room with a cot, burlap draped window. Behind the drape I saw a broken down bus, no wheels. The next day we were told we would have to share our rooms,
as a plane full of fisherman was coming there. I disappeared early.

SUNLIGHT AT PANGNIRTUNGThe sun did set here, late, before midnight, and there were very beautiful sunsets, and sunrises. Here there
was night, and I could sleep. The town is on a river, with cliffs all around and was therefore protected from extreme weather. There were paths up the mountains, marked with inukshooks, making hiking easier.
However, as I walked I found underground streams, hidden with thick beds of wild flowers. As I sank to my hips in an underground stream, I decided to follow marked paths.

PANGNIRTUNGAnd trip to AUYUITTUG National Park
I hired an Inuit guide to take me down a narrow riverto Auyuittug National Park. I sketched him as we went in a canoe with
a motor on the back. We weaved inbetween ice burgs, and he drove very fast in the freezing wind. On arrival, I walked into the Park and noticed the river was disappearing in front of me. I was, suddenly walking on the bottom of the river. The melting snow on top of the huge cliffs was melting from the sun, and forming wonderful waterfalls. When I took out my sketch book, my guide yelled, that he would have to leave immediately, as the tide was
changing too fast, and soon we would be marooned there, in the Park.
