Look in your bag for product names and company names (brands) discuss with your peers where the logotypes, logograms and symbols are.

Learning Objective

TypographyTypography is the art of letter style and design. There are an

amazing number of different letter types available (typefaces).

They are often given names based on the designer who created

them.

Many of them date back to over 400 years ago.

Lettering is used to create an effect, a meaning or to make an

impact.

Fonts (letter types)

CAPITAL LETTERS – Also known as ‘upper case’.

Small letters – Also known as lower case.

Letters have basic part names as shown.

(remember these you shall be tested at the end of the lesson.)

Serifs.

Serifs are strokes that finish

off the ends of stems, arms & curves.

Letters without the extra strokes are

known as ‘SANSERIFS’.

Serifs come from the use of brushes

and chisels.

There are four different types of serifs.

Letter spacing

• The ease with which text can be read depends on the spaces between the letters.

• Sometimes the space between individual letters needs to be adjusted in order to make the word visually evenly spaced. This process is called kerning.

Line Spacing

• Line spacing is the space between two consecutive lines of letters.

• Line spacing is the space between two consecutive

lines of letters.

• When you have designed your 3 typographic idea’s, you choose the occasion name that suits your targeted audience of 11-14 year olds.

• Next lesson you shall design it on a C.A.D. package.
