and taking blankets to wrap up in. Last season it seemed to rain every Friday causing us to prepare to be soaked by games end, even with the ponchos the rain found a way. However, we were outside cheering our team and that made it all worthwhile. Who knows what this season will bring, but hopefully we will be bringing home plenty of wins to extend our season into December. Nothing shines brighter than the blue victory light after a win. Win or lose, I will follow the Wildcats known

for their Blue Front, White Back Magic!

I hope you all are as passionate about either

your high school alma mater or

your children’s high school as I am mine. Celebrating

the kickoff of the football season, we recently had a Spirit Day at work to encourage everyone to support their high school team. It was great seeing everyone represent their team. Without a variety of fans, we wouldn’t have football! May you all have a wonderful Fall season!

Hi! Once summer vacation has gone and the smell of salt air and the feel of the sand under my feet is just a memory, I start looking forward to Friday Night Lights. Friday is my favorite day of the week and it becomes even more so during high school football. As I write this there is officially one more Friday without a Wildcat Football game! Watching college and professional football is OK but I’d much rather be a part of the high school football game.

E x c i t e m e n t , wonder and anticipation fill the air as the fans fill the seats and the players practice on the field. The bright lights, sound of the band playing, drill teams, cheers and the smell of concession stands get the fans ready for kickoff.

Even with the extreme heat at the beginning of the season, I still can’t wait to cheer on the Wildcats. Cheering the team helps to take away the stress of the work week and makes everyday problems disappear. Moving into Fall the weather finally cools and by the end of the season we are wearing jackets, gloves

Letter from the President

Dobrý den and Greetings Everyone,

The 2019 RVOS Agents Round-up was held August 8th and 9th in Temple. An open house was provided by the Home Office to give the agents an opportunity to gather for conversation, food and fellowship. RVOS managers and employees were on hand at the reception which allowed the agents to meet and put a face to those with whom they work with on a daily basis. The seminar portion of the Round-up provided educational opportunities along with updates on what is happening in the insurance world. Our reinsurance brokers were on hand along with partnering companies who all helped sponsor the event. See a listing of those who participated along with photos from the event in this edition.

District meetings will be held for RVOS District 1 in Temple and District 3 in Rosenberg this fall to elect District Directors and Alternate Directors as well as By-Law Committee members and Alternates. The Delegates elected by the respective members in each district to attend the 2018 Convention in Waco and who also serve as Delegates between Conventions will attend the district meetings and vote on behalf of the members they represent. More information on the location and meeting schedules is also included in this issue.

Many of us have pets who become part of the family. With Healthy Paws, you can be reimbursed up to 90% of your vet bill and give your best friend the medical care they need, when they need it. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has

been voted the top-rated pet insurance the past five years. If you are interested in health insurance for that special member of your family, you can run your own quote for your specific pet by visiting our website at www.rvos.com and click on the RVOS General Agency link or contact your agent for assistance. You may also call the RVOS Home Office and speak to an agent. Coverage for our three-year-old chihuahua Poco is only $21 per month. Students are now back in school so a quick reminder to be careful in school zones. Almost daily we read or hear about a tragedy because someone wasn’t paying attention while behind the wheel. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t be intexticated. Pull over if you must be on the phone.

Thank you and tak dlouho.

RVOS Home Office employees donated a variety of supplies, delivered on August 12, to help fill those backpacks. So far over 1600 backpacks have been given out with plans of 300 more at the Community Fair held at Meredith Elementary.

A new state law makes it clear that it’s illegal for a contractor or roofer to waive an insurance deductible.

“This new law will help further protect consumers,” said Texas Insurance Commissioner Kent Sullivan. “Roofers who waive deductibles are cutting corners. Take your business elsewhere.”

After a major storm, contractors – including some scam artists – are quick to arrive on the scene. This leads to shoddy repairs, fake contracts, and other problems. The Texas Department of Insurance created a special fraud unit that meets with local officials after a disaster and explains steps they can take to protect residents from contractor scams.

One selling point bad contractors often use is offering to waive or absorb the homeowner’s deductible. The contractor then cuts corners, uses lower quality products, or inflates the bill sent to the insurance company to cover the difference.

It is illegal for contractors or roofers to offer to waive a deductible or promise a rebate for all or part of a deductible. Under the new law effective September 1, violators could get up to a $2,000 fine and up to six months in jail.

If a contractor offers to waive a deductible, report it to the Texas Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-621-0508.

Tips to avoid contractor fraud:• Get written estimates on company letterhead with clear contact information.• Get more than one bid to gauge which ones are too high or too good to be true.• Check references and phone numbers.• Beware of those who only have out-of-town references or solicit door to door.• Don't pay in full up front and don’t make a final payment until the job is done.• Never sign a contract with blanks on it.

You may also need to consider the purchase of flood insurance. Your insurance policy does not include coverage for damage resulting from a flood even if hurricane winds and rain caused the flood to occur. Without separate flood insurance coverage, you may have uncovered losses caused by a flood. Please discuss the need to purchase separate flood insurance coverage with your insurance agent or contact the RVOS General Agency. You may also visit www.floodsmart.gov.

During the Thirteenth Convention held June 26-28, 1950 at the city auditorium in Temple a motion was made and adopted that a nine-member committee be appointed by the Convention President and Vice President to work with the Board on a study as to whether the Association should build a new Home Office and if so, to select the location. The committee members appointed were W.E. Kuzel of Buckholts, Jerry Dana of Temple, Jim Wagner of Danbury, F.S. Lesikar of Taylor, Robert Cervenka of West, John Gajevsky of Orchard, Jerry E. Valchar of Weimar, Frank Jurca of Needville and Chas Moucka of Ennis.

After the study was conducted and the recommendation presented, the Delegates passed a referendum vote in favor of the construction of a new Home Office. The location chosen was 20 South 4th Street, in Temple, Texas. The first Board of Directors meeting was held in the new location on January 9, 1951. In the meeting a motion was made and adopted to hold a 50th anniversary celebration of the Association in the month of June. A committee consisting of Chas Navratil, Joseph Slavik, George Kacir and RVOS President J.H. Hurta was appointed to make plans for the celebration.

On April 10, 1951, the Anniversary Committee met at the Home Office. The date of June 10, 1951 was set for the 50th anniversary celebration in conjunction with an open house and dedication of the new Home Office. A noon meal was held at Seaton Star Hall for all lodges and members.

The dedication ceremony included the presentation of a key to then president J.H. Hurta by a young girl. The young girl was Patricia Talasek. Over the years many have asked who this young lady was and why she was chosen and where she might be now.

Earlier this spring retired RVOS Assistant Vice President Sharlet Sladecek attended a local church retreat. During the lunch, conversations included where those seated at her table were from and their occupations. Sharlet said she had recently retired from RVOS.

Pat was familiar with RVOS and shared a remembrance of when she had participated in an event when she was a girl and had the honor of giving a key to “a man”.

Initially, Patricia didn’t remember just why she was chosen but during the discussion it was decided that it may have been due to her father, Jerry Talasek’s friendship

with Convention Vice President, Theo Dana, who assisted the Convention President in selecting the nine member committee that worked with the Board to find a location for the Home Office.

It has been 68 years since that eventful celebration and to honor her she was invited to meet RVOS President Wiley Shockley and tour the Home Office at the current location on South 37th Street in Temple. Patricia Talasek is now Patricia (Pat) Proctor. She and her husband Bill are both retired. They have three sons and five grandchildren. Pat is active at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple, TX where she currently serves as a Eucharistic minister and recently retired from teaching religious education to juniors and seniors.
