Safety ArticleBob Green, Safety Chairperson
As many if you know the upstate of South Carolina and the mountain areas of North Carolina,Georgia and Tennessee are dealing with a wild fire onslaught. The precursor to this has beenan extraordinary dry spell going back several months. Here in the upstate of South Carolinawe have not had appreciable rain since August. So, the woods are tinder dry and we havehad a couple of lightning strikes and then strikes from the 2 legged ne’er do wells.
So this month’s topic is fire safety and being prepared. As many of you know we have had aburning ban in place for some time in the mountains and this is good, because a lot of ourfolks like to burn their leaves to get rid of them. This practice in this exceeding dry time ofcourse is not being practiced. The National forest service in North Georgia announcedrestrictions on campers and forbade fires of any kind at the camp sites. North and SouthCarolina closed many off their state parks in the mountains. Tennessee apparently caught onene’er do well and several states are looking for their ne’er do wells.
So how does that impact us? First off, anyone with a breathing problem suffers greatly in thissituation. The air is very unhealthy and will be so unit, we have a soaking rain.
Now, fire safety: A working cohort had an interesting week. On Saturday he walked throughhis kitchen and noticed that the oven appeared to be on. He thought little of it until about 10minutes later he came back through the kitchen and his wife was doing her final clean-up andhe asked why she had the oven on, well, she had turned the oven off, but the heating coil wasnice and red hot. As he opened the oven door, the problem became clearer. The heating coilwas burning and the oven was turned off. He went to the breaker panel and turned off thepower to the entire kitchen and the coil was still burning. He grabbed his fire extinguisher andit was empty. He ended up extinguishing the burning coil with baking soda.
Next fire safety: This one was substantially more painful. A friend was tired of cutting theweeds out of his driveway and after a few alcoholic beverages, decided that burning them outwould be a lot easier. So he filled his sprinkler can with gasoline and started “watering” hisweeds with gasoline, after nearly half of the can was emptied, he lit a match and threw it intothe weeds. Well, the gasoline loved the fire including what he had in the sprinkler can and ofcourse it burned his hand and arm and he dropped the can and now it severely burned hislegs. As those of you know severe burns are extremely painful and his recovery took a whilebut the weeds now are covered with the appropriate weed killer and he has subsequentlymoved to a town house where someone else worries about the weeds.
So in closing fire keeps us warm, and yet this lovely thing in the fire place or fire pit can be adefinite hazard. So be safe and have a Happy Thanksgiving..
