September 2019

Hello, Peaksters! Happy Fall to all of you! Mike and I drove up to Cripple Creek the oth-er day and I was amazed at how green every-thing still is – it was like driving through spring! But I’m predicting an early fall. I hope winter holds off – but I do love fall with all the colors and especially the golden aspens. Speaking of fall and Cripple Creek, it’s time for our annual Mini-mini-RG at “The Creek.” The play at the Butte this year looks especially fun – The Andrews Brothers! Be sure to RSVP to Al for that so we can get group tickets! And, don’t forget to make your individual reserva-tions for the Mount Pisgah Speaks Cemetery tour, too – that’s really great! There’s lots to do in Cripple Creek and it’s full of history – so it’s not just about the casinos. The Jail Muse-um and Homestead House are surprisingly good and you might want to consider taking a run over to Victor, too, and visit the Lowell Thomas museum. But, I will admit it, I love the casinos … and I’m a bit of a slot machine junkie. It takes a Mah Jongg tournament to get me to miss a Cripple Creek weekend and I’ll have to miss this one, as I’ll be in Frisco for a “Mahj” tournament. I entered a Mah Jongg tournament in Denver in August at The Jewish Experience and took first place - then the very next day drove to Westcliffe (beautiful drive, BTW) and took first place at their tournament, too! Pretty soon, I’ll be going pro – hitting the big-time tournaments in Atlantic City and Reno! Did you know - there are even Mah Jongg tourna-ment cruises – maybe I’ll look into one of those someday! Who would have thought a small-town Montana girl getting into Mah Jongg to the point of entering tournaments? We had a great August for our group. Lost Friends was the GITBP location and as packed

as the place was, I think everybody was found! About 15 Mensans showed up for beers and we added to the already crowded pub! But the beer was good and I think the place will be successful. For the Mensa Hike, Deb and I wandered in Red Rocks Open Space even though there was a report of an “aggressive bear” in the area. We didn’t see any bears – just some fresh deer tracks and a few people. The quarry there is beautiful and it’s amazing how much stone they removed. BurgerQuest was at a favorite spot – Wines of Colorado in Cascade and we had a wonderful lunch. For a Random Event, Al hit the jackpot with setting up the Creekside Cowboy Breakfast at The Pantry in Green Mountain Falls! Ted Newman serenaded us with country and western music while we enjoyed an actually quite good buffet breakfast creek-side in the patio area. We had such a good time, we’ll plan on doing this again next summer! And, as I type this up, we still have the end of month Ultimate Saturday Supper coming up at the M Lazy C Ranch! I’ll try to remember to let you know how it is! Upcoming events in September – ExComm Meeting at Poke Bop! I have no idea what to expect at a poke restaurant, but it sounds fun! We’re Mini-golfing again at Lost Island – it’s a nice course and they’ve really decorated it up a la Jurassic Park! Trivial Pursuits is moving back down south to the Buffalo Wild Wings by TinselTown as they have more game players. We’re throwing in one intellectual event – IntelCon – into the mix on the 19th, so bring your thoughts on current events to our dis-cussion evening at Peak Place. Coopers are hosting Pictionary in September – another fun event (hey, who says we can’t have fun?).

The Newsletter of Plains and Peaks Mensa, Southern Colorado

Our fall hike is back to Ute Valley Park on the West Side late in the month so maybe we’ll see some good fall colors there, too. And, we’ll finish up the month with Ultimate Satur-day Supper at Streetcar 520! Lots of events to choose from in September! Happy Fall to all ... enjoy the upcoming colors and golden aspens. Please join us for an event or two or three! Hope to see you soon!

Thoughts during a 2,000-mile road trip from Denver to the FoRGe North Regional Gathering in Grand Forks ND: Time runs differently when you travel across zones. Dinner

comes earlier eastbound. Google-Maps routings should be taken with a grain of salt.

Google puts a line on the map but it doesn’t say how good the line is. Case in point – trying to follow their zig-zag shortcut diag-onally across Nebraska I drove up to what was going to be a 30-mile stretch of roadway. There was actually a sign by the turn-in that said, “Caution – cracked pavement ahead.” My car is less than a year old. Guided by my hardcopy road atlas I scampered back to the Interstate.

I just can’t get over how a high-class Interstate highway can have

official interchange ramps that let out onto unpaved dirt roads. There’s some strange topography in far northeastern Nebraska.

Surrounded by flatland there are high hills that just don’t make sense right next to the Missouri River.

Cattle and alfalfa to the west, beans to the east, and corn every-

where. North Dakota even mows and bales up the grass and/or alfalfa growing by the roadside.

Crossed the Bakken oil formation expecting to see lots of derricks

and pump jacks. Not a one until I got back to Colorado. Howev-er, there were wind-power farms and lots of trucks toting huge turbine blades along the highways.

South Dakota doesn’t play nomenclatural favorites. It has two

towns, of equal size and 60 miles apart, Bison and Buffalo. Recent rains in Wyoming have brought out the wildflowers –

entire landscapes robed in brilliant yellows and greens. A bit south of Wyoming’s Devil’s Tower there’s a very similar tall

red-rock formation jutting up right next to US85 that could be its little brother. I’d like to call it Devil’s Tourette.

FoRGe North was well worth the trip – good presentations, good conversations, good venue, even a visit from the city’s Mayor, and a LOT of good local food. Grand Forks ND does excellent pizza, who knew? Many thanks to Chris Zarns and his team (Kenya Hitchens, Brett McCutcheon-Vigil, Jeff Frank, maybe more) for putting it all to-gether. My personal thanks to Kevin Lemke for recommending a side trip to the Enchanted Highway on the way home. Check it out – the huge sculptures along that stretch of road are the work of a dedicated artist and skilled craftsman.

“The Mensa Education & Research Foundation college scholar-ship program is unique in that its awards are based totally on essays written by the applicants. There is no requirement for applicants to be Mensa members nor is consideration given to grades, academic program, or financial need.” (From the MERF Web page at http://www.mensafoundation.org/what-we-do/scholarships/) What could be simpler than writing an essay describing your goals and filling out a very simple application? And the appli-cant requirements couldn’t be simpler, either: The applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the US who resides in a participating local group's area; the applicant must be en-rolled in a degree program in an accredited institution of high-er learning during the academic year following the application date; and lastly, the applicant must submit an application and essay of not more than 550 words explaining their academic and/or vocational goals. Please note: The essay application will be available starting September 15th, and the deadline for entries is January 15, 2020. So, if you’re in a degree program or about to enter one, check out the MERF Essay Contest. There will be at least one prize of approximately $500 given out for our local area, along with the potential of winning up to $1000 (and larger!) at the national level. And remember, you don’t have to be in Mensa to partic-ipate, so if you have a friend or relative who would qualify, direct them to the MERF web-site http://www.mensafoundation.org/what-we-do/scholarships/ for the complete rules and application, or have them contact Sandy Halby, 719-528-5483, or e-mail [email protected].

BurgerQuest

Page 4 PlainsPeaking

CREEKSIDE BURGERS – A RETURN TRIP

There’s a really nice wine shop specializing in Colorado Wines in Ute Pass just before you get to Crystola. They also serve burgers in a pretty creekside setting, and that’s where the Au-gust BurgerQuest happened, or was supposed to happen. It seems that the weather wasn’t forecast to be too cooperative, and the festivities were moved indoors. Doug stood in for your normal (?) host, who was traveling on the East Coast visiting family. Attendees were Connie, Debi, Doug, Janet, Linda, Mike, RC, Robin, Sandy, and Scott. Comments: “Needed [beverage] refills, they never checked”, “Service was slow. No wine list. Wine by the glass was not available. Wine steward does not understand ‘dry rose’” (Host note: wine turned out to be quite sweet), “Burger was over-cooked and dry”, “BBQ Beans!”, “Wait time seemed a little long”, “Guacamole was a bit thin. Baked Brie appetizer was very light on the brie – could hardly detect the brie!”, “The wait staff were fine, but it was a full hour after ordering that the food came. The Buffalo Burger was very good, but the bun [fell] apart.” Comment from absentee host – Is it possible we have some rating inflation creeping in? Ratings were pretty good despite the rather critical comments. The ratings of the venue and the burgers, to the nearest half point, were: Hamburger and Toppings 4.5 Service 3.5 Cleanliness 4.5 Side dishes 4.0 Value for price 4.0 Atmosphere 4.0 From time to time, your host pleads for recommendations for future BurgerQuests (this being no exception?). Rock Bottom Brewery showed up in several recommendations, so let’s try that next. It’s off Powers Blvd, close to the Cinemark Theater and across the street from Tucano’s at 3316 Cinema Point, Colorado Springs, CO 80922. Look for them on the internet at https://rockbottom.com, phone number is 719-550-3586. Boring factoid alert: Rock Bottom Brewery is a chain, and has 26 locations in 14 states. Colorado alone has seven locations, more than any other state. One commendable aspect of Rock Bottom – they have private or semi-private areas, and they DO take reservations. Because of that, please be sure to RSVP to George at 719-418-6073 or send an email to [email protected] a day or two (or more) in advance if you plan to attend. And be sure to bring along the rug rats; BurgerQuest is a kid-friendly event.

If you have an announcement or news item, please forward it to PlainsPeaking Editor Betsy Ogan( [email protected]) for inclusion in PlainsPeaking! And, don’t forget, you can advertise your business in PlainsPeaking. The current rates are: business card size $6, quarter page $10, half page $25 and full page $50. GET PUBLISHED! If you’d like to contribute to the PlainsPeaking news-letter, submit your article, poem, photo, puzzle, whatever to Betsy at [email protected] AUGUST MINI-GOLF! Five mini-duffers took advantage of the wonderful weather and hit the mini-links at Mensa Mini-Golf in August. We had fun as the Lost Island course is well maintained and fun to play! Sandy was the winner with Jim and Louise close behind followed up by Dave and Al L. We’re planning on going back in September – why not join in! It’s goofy fun!

AUGUST TRIVIAL PURSUITS! Four Peaksters participated in the monthly Trivial Pursuits game at the North Academy Wild Wings: Al, Mark, Jim and Louise. Louise fell victim to a faulty game console, but the rest were able to complete the rounds. There was a veritable 'photo phinish' between Mark and Jim, with Mark edging out Jim by 52 points out of 40100! Al followed along at 35646. Those three ranked 98th, 99th and 131st in the nation. We were the only players at the venue that day. We are looking at returning to the southern Buffalo Wild Wings for next month's event.

AUGUST SCRABBLE! We had a good time playing Scrabble at the Coopers in August – with enough players for two tables! The big win-

ners: Chris, Mark, Al L (twice!). Nobody “bingo’d” – but I do know a couple of bogus words got through without being challenged! We’ll do it again in a couple of months!

HELP WANTED! Do you have a Media or Publicity background? May-be that’s something you’d like to try? If so, consider helping Plains & Peaks Mensa with Admissions Testing publicity! We’re looking to in-crease our testing numbers and really need a hand with the publicity – ideas, contacts, someone to take this particular bull by the horns and wrestle around with it! And, bonus – this would look good on your resume or annual job appraisal! If you’d be interested in volun-teering to be our Publicity person, contact Sandy at [email protected]! JOIN PLAINS & PEAKS MENSA ON FACEBOOK! See photos of recent activities and meetings and get to know some of your fellow Mensans via this popular social site! the Andrews Brothers. Here’s the synopsis: A USO performance from the Andrews Sisters is in jeopardy of cancellation when they fail to appear shortly before curtain. Thankfully three earnest stagehands are determined to go on with the show! The Andrews Broth-ers is filled to the brim with 30 songs made famous by the Andrews Sisters and other top artists of the era. Mistaken identities and madcap adventures along with the music of an entire generation highlight this wonderful valentine to the heroes of World War II. Tickets are $21. Let Al know how many you want and he'll place the order ([email protected], 291-8749). Be advised, if you make reservations, you will have to pay Al for the tickets, even if you cannot attend. Special events include the usual "Make your own plans” events in-cluding the Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad, the Crip-ple District Museum (excellent small museum), the Cripple Creek Jail Museum, the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, the Old Homestead House Museum, as well as the Victor Lowell Museum, the Victor Gold Camp Ag and Mining Museum just a few scenic miles away in the town of Victor (which is like Cripple Creek used to be before the casi-nos!) and more! This weekend, the Mount Pisgah Speaks Cemetery tours are running, too! Be sure to make reservations for that! At 6 p.m. we'll gather at a local eatery for a dinner. Let Al know by September 6th t if you're coming! Contact Al at [email protected], 719-291-8749. Saturday, September 14th, Gifted Youth Event: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Animal Education Day! We are lucky to have a wonderful zoo with lots of demonstrations and animal shows. This is a great education experience for all ag-es! Please contact Srikant directly to coordinate the time. BTW - Gifted Youth Events are open to all our Plains & Peaks members and families – children do not have to be Mensa members to participate! If you have questions, please contact Srikant Mantravadi, [email protected]; or 719-352-5074. Tuesday, September 17th, 6pm: Trivial Pursuits. We’re playing Show-down, a 6-stage trivia contest featuring a wide variety of topics, at Buffalo Wild Wings, 2905 Geyser Drive (at I-25 and Lake, next to Out-back Steaks and Tinseltown) – they claim to have 45 players and Wi-Fi so everybody should be able to play! We’re drinking some adult bev-erages (if you want to) and noshing on wings and other Buffalo Wild Wings specialty foods like burgers and sand-wiches! The actual game starts at 6:30pm, but if you want a game player you probably should get there earlier! Call, text, or e-mail Al (719-291-8749 or [email protected]) to let him know you’ll be there! Thursday, September 19th, 6:30pm: IntelCon! Here’s the idea – eve-ry couple of months we meet to discuss a new issue or perhaps view a documentary and then discuss it. Could be a current event, controver-sial topic, historical event – whatever we want! In September – let’s talk about some current news events (both local and national). We’re gathering at Community Room at Peak Place Café, 2360 Montebello Square Drive, Suite H1 (which is off Academy Blvd and Montebello). BTW - Peak Place offers coffee, wine, beer, and food. They are ready for us to give them a try in September as they’ve been operating for several years on a slowly graduating business model, which previously would not have been well suited to our group. Their tasting room is in the beautifully reno-vated, historic Carter Payne Chapel. It should be an experience to remember! Remember, if you know of a good brew-pub or happy hour bar in the local area that we have missed, please let Sean know. He can be reached by email:: [email protected], or by cell phone: (719) 651-6706 Friday, September 6th, 8pm: RSVP for Cripple Creek Weekend! Saturday, September 7th, 10am: Caffeine Conundrum. For Septem-ber we'll be going to Javalato, 9697 Prominent Pt Unit 156 (that’s of

Powers, between Briargate and Union, near Till) and checking out their java offerings! And, if you’re not in the mood for coffee, they have gelato as well as toasts and burritos! Events continued horse or waffle? Who knows? With Pictionary (and the way we draw) you can never tell! Let’s have some fun and all go to Chris and George’s Pictionary Party! They will provide the munchies; you provide your beverage. Children are invited. Please RSVP by Thursday, September 19th, to [email protected] or call 719-646-4456. The Coopers live at 1105 Bowstring Road, Monument. Sunday, September 22nd, 4:30pm: Kimball’s Peak Three! Join some of your fellow Mensans at Kimball’s, which is a downtown (Pikes Peak and Tejon) first run movie theater showing “the very best of current independent and foreign films.” The plan is to meet at 4:30, have a drink in Kimball’s full-service bar, select a movie to attend together

(or not!), and then afterwards, possibly have another drink and/or dinner and discuss the movie(s). We’ll be taking a chance on what Kimball’s is showing on this date - but you never know! Could be the best movie you’ve ever seen!!

Saturday, September 28th, 8am, Ute Valley Park Hike. We’re revis-iting Ute Valley Park! Located on the west side of “The Springs,” Ute Valley Park is a great place for hiking and mountain biking. Fantastic vistas, unique geological features, really wild wildlife and vegeta-tion, not to mention the prominent hogback! Let’s spend some time exploring this great local park! Let’s meet up at the parking area at 1705 Vindicator Drive at Sandy’s car – she has a red Ford Explorer (with the Mensa logo on the back). We’re hitting the trail promptly at 8am, arrive earlier to locate Sandy and get your hat/water/etc. ready! Be sure to wear your hiking shoes and bring sun block and water, too! Saturday, September 28th, 6pm: Ultimate Saturday Supper. We're visiting Streetcar 520 at – you guessed it – 520 S. Tejon Street, serving everything from mussels to brussels, all modestly priced. Streetcar 520 is located in a former streetcar maintenance building and the owner has decorated with vintage photographs and rail maps. Preview the menu at https://streetcar520.com/eat. Call, text, or e-mail Al (719-291-8749 or [email protected]) by 26 September to let him know you’ll be there!
