LOCKHEED MARTIN MICHOUD SPACE SYSTEMS BULLETIN MISSION SUCCESS ® June 28, 1999 Michoud Space Systems is now in the business of making its own Intertank panels. A new riveter designed for this purpose is about to go on-line, bring- ing a significant segment of ET pro- duction to the Michoud Assembly Facility. A total of eight panels (two thrust panels and six skin/stringer panels) are needed to build each Intertank for the ET. Until now, the panels had been purchased ready-made from hardware supplier Learjet. Following arrival of these panels at Michoud, the procedure has been for Lockheed Martin to join them together using Michoud’s GEMCOR Vertical Riveter to form a complete Intertank skin. (A number of fur- ther key activities, including instal- lation of the Solid Rocket Booster Beam, are required to finish each Intertank.) After completing a study on the benefits of bringing production of the panels in-house, Michoud Space Systems and NASA proceeded with procuring a new riveting machine to make the panels at Michoud. GEMCOR, a Buffalo, New York- based machine tool company with 60-plus years of experience building riveting machines was chosen to design and manufacture the panel riveter. The decision to build the panels at Michoud was motivated by the company’s need to have greater quality control over the hardware, to improve production schedules and to lower costs. The new GEMCOR Riveter is lo- cated adjacent to the original Verti- cal Riveter in the Intertank assem- bly area of Building 103. The new riveter incorporates numerous tech- nical advances, some of them driven by the ET project’s unique requirements. For example, this is the first non-hydraulic machine of its type in the industry. As preparation of the riveter for production continues, a team of GEMCOR personnel is currently completing installation and fine tuning of the riveter’s operating and control systems. When the riveter is up and run- ning, Lockheed Martin employees will use it to make Intertank panels from parts including a rectangular section of aluminum skin, stringers and doublers. Approximately 10,000 rivets per panel will be used to join all the parts mechanically. Production tests are currently scheduled to begin in mid-July with the start of a pathfinder article. Michoud Space Systems is now inthe business of making its ownIntertank panels.

The new GEMCOR Riveter is lo-

cated adjacent to the original Verti-cal Riveter in the Intertank assem-bly area of Building 103. The newriveter incorporates numerous tech-nical advances, some of themdriven by the ET project’s uniquerequirements. For example, this isthe first non-hydraulic machine ofits type in the industry.

As preparation of the riveter forproduction continues, a team ofGEMCOR personnel is currentlycompleting installation and finetuning of the riveter’s operatingand control systems.

The honor is a result of theteam’s outstanding achievementin designing, assembling andsuccessfully flying the SLWT in1998.

The certificate reads “For yourcontributions to the developmentand flight certification of the Su-per Lightweight Tank which flewfirst on STS-91 June 2, 1998, onSTS-95 October 29, 1998 and onthe inaugural flight of the Interna-tional Space Station on STS-88 onDecember 4, 1998.”

Corporation reduces earningsoutlook for 1999 and 2000

Lockheed Martin announced thatit has completed a detailed financialreview as part of an ongoing assess-ment of the company’s strategy, op-erations and organization. The as-sessment already has resulted inseveral actions including manage-ment changes in key business units.

The financial review resulted in asubstantial reduction of the currentearnings outlook for 1999 and 2000.The Corporation now expects, ex-cluding the effects of nonrecurringand unusual items, earnings perdiluted share of at least $1.50 for1999, and at least $2.15 in 2000. Forthe second quarter 1999, a loss perdiluted share between $0.10 and$0.15 is expected. Free cash flowestimates are also being reduced to$0.5 billion in 1999 and $0.9 billionin 2000.

The principal reasons for the re-vised financial outlook are increasedcost growth, reduced productionrates and delivery delays on the C-130J program; recent launch vehiclefailures; and delays of launches andcommercial satellite deliveries.

The Theater High Altitude AreaDefense (THAAD) weapon systembuilt by Lockheed Martin Missiles& Space successfully intercepted atarget missile over White SandsMissile Range, NM on June 10.

The test was conducted by theU.S. Army Ballistic Missile DefenseOrganization (BMDO) and a con-tractor team led by Missiles &Space. The interception took placeat a high altitude, and the target,which simulated a Scud ballisticmissile, was destroyed on impact. The test was the tenth in aplanned series of THAAD ProgramDefinition Risk Reduction (PDRR)flight tests to verify the THAADprototype design and performanceof system components.

All segments of the THAADweapon system were successfullyintegrated during the flight test.

Technical Operations is generallyassumed to be an easyenvironment for maintainingsafety at work. The common visionof Technical Operations isengineers at their work stationsusing computers. On this view,their safety precautions wouldamount to: don’t stack your data sohigh that someone could be hurt inan avalanche of paper; be carefulnot to trip over all the wires thatconnect various components of yourcomputer system; maintain yourkeyboard at the appropriate leveland provide proper seating to avoid

back and hand strain; etc.However, many Technical

Operations employees work side-by-side with Production, ProductAssurance and Facilities personnel.They climb tank access platforms,enter tanks, operate machine toolsand work with hazardous materials.

These employees typically provideproduction technical support and/orwork in the technical laboratories.Therefore, the proactive safetyprocedures and practices used byother functional operations areequally important in TechnicalOperations.

The on-going reemphasis onsafety requires all Michoud SpaceSystems employees to participate inthe safety initiatives. Severalarticles written by Leadership Teammembers have appeared in priorMission Success Bulletins, and thesafety guidelines and advicecontained in each of these articlesare appropriate for TechnicalOperations personnel.

Since a large number of TechnicalOperations personnel work in anoffice environment, housekeeping isa major proactive safety initiative.

The retention of historicaltechnical data is important, andproper storage of this dataimproves the working environmentand enhances safety inspection bythe area’s safety representative.

In order to assure the maximumsafety environment in an officeenvironment, each employeeshould take the responsibility tonotify the area safetyrepresentative of any unsafecondition.

This can be achieved by simplyreporting the condition to thedepartment secretary. Thesecretary will accept theresponsibility to inform the properrepresentative.

It should be noted that MichoudSpace Systems has chosen toinclude safety as a major incentivefor ISO 9001 registration. Thisdemonstrates the commitment bythe Leadership Team to provideand ensure compliance to safetyprocedures. A safe workenvironment results in delivery ofproducts that meet the customer’srequirements and is an essentialelement in Mission Success.

ISO 9001 internalassessment,training under way

Since mid-May the ISO 9001Implementation Team has been “outon the floor” doing internalassessments to determine progressas Michoud Space Systemscontinues to prepare for the big testin September — ISO registration.

The team’s primary focus isevaluating and reviewing Michoud’sProduct Delivery System, accordingto Feltus Kennedy, ISO SeniorManagement Representative.

He pointed out the followingbenefits of an internal assessment:

• Provides an opportunity to “getup close and personal” with theworkforce in conveying the ISOmessages

• Familiarizes those employeeswho have been identified as most

likely to interact with the BritishStandards Institution (BSI) auditorsin September

• Identifies process and systemimprovement possibilities andimplements the changes necessary

• Establishes the baseline andverifies Michoud’s compliance to theISO 9001 standard.

“Following the ISOimplementation team’s internalassessment, the BSI auditors actingas an independent third party willvisit Michoud on July 13-15 to

conduct a similar pre-assessment,”Kennedy said. “Both the MichoudISO team and the BSI team havethe common objective of preparingthe company for the Septembercompliance audit and registration.”

“Training in the principles of ISO9001 is nearly completed for about240 supervisors who could becalled on to support the pre-assessment,” said Bob Ottley,Human Resources.

Following the completion ofsupervisory training, 45 sessionsare planned during August to trainall other Lockheed Martinemployees working at Michoud.

An additional five sessions willbe conducted in August byvideoconference for companypersonnel at Kennedy SpaceCenter, at Marshall Space FlightCenter and on field assignments.According to Ottley, all ISO 9001training is scheduled to bewrapped up in advance of the startof the September compliance audit.

Their eyes got bigger.Orange flame and smoke shot

from under Discovery as it roaredaway from Kennedy Space Center(KSC) into the early morning sky onMay 27.

They tensed for the coming soundwaves.

“Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam!”The booming sounds from Pad 39-Bfinally reached them, three and ahalf miles away.

“I could feel it inside my chest,”said Mandy Walkenhorst ofLusher Extension School.

Mandy, one of sixteen New Or-leans seventh grade girls to watchthe shuttle from a VIP viewing siteat KSC, said she had never seen alaunch before and didn’t know itwould be that thrilling.

“As long as I can remember, I’vewanted to be an astronaut,” saidLusher’s Megan Myers while cran-ing her neck to follow the shuttle’ssmoke trail. “I’ve wanted to go upin space and see other planets. Thethree women make me think of mydream – that I could make it hap-pen.”

Megan was referring to astro-nauts Ellen Ochoa, Julie Payetteand Tamara Jernigan, membersof the seven-person STS-96 crewzooming toward a rendezvous withthe International Space Station.After all, this was the purpose of thetrip – to expose girls to non-tradi-tional roles like aerospace engineeror astronaut.

Lockheed Martin Michoud SpaceSystems and Southwest Airlinesteamed up to take the girls to thelaunch after judging their entries inthe contest “Mission Possible: GirlPower to the Moon!”

The New Orleans Public Schoolstudents designed and built theirown model of a spaceport on themoon and wrote an essay on thespaceport role they would assume.

Pooped from waking at 2:30 thatmorning and getting to the viewingsite two hours prior to the 6:48 a.m.launch, the girls slept on the bus tripto Sea World, their final destinationbefore returning home.

Many of the girls had never flownbefore, so from beginning to end theydescribed the trip as “awesome,cool.”

“We’re looking at this trip as a step-ping stone for careers,” said EricaMitchell, Livingston Middle Schoolteacher. “Math, science and technol-ogy. And especially space aviation.All our girls are turned on to science.”

“I never thought I’d get to see allthis stuff,” confided ChristieDuvernay of Thurgood MarshallMiddle School after seeing the Saturnmoon rocket during the KSC tour.“But I finally got my chance.”

McMain Secondary School wantedto be a controls manager. “Theymake sure everything’s runningright or correctly.”

Mandy Walkenhorst thought anatmospheric chemist would be agood choice. “They deal withweather up in space. They takesamples.”

Named grand prize winners in theGirl Power contest, LaTrina andMandy had seen astronaut andshuttle commander Steve Oswaldthe day before when he congratu-lated the group and told girls thatmaybe someday they could go up inspace, too.

“Nothing like seeing it in person,”said Virgil Byers of Lusher, one offive science teachers accompanyingthe girls. “Actually being here andexperiencing it surpassed my expec-tations.”

CAD LearningCenter Opens

The Michoud Space Systems CADLearning Center is open forbusiness! CAD stands forComputer Aided Design, a criticalcapability that is used not only inour current programs, but is alsocrucial for winning new business.

“It is difficult to predict whichdesign systems will be required byfuture customers,” said MikeSteiner, Management InformationSystems, who was instrumental inestablishing the Center. “The planis to begin now to develop expertisein a variety of CAD applications.The Center will be useful to cross-train designers on variousComputer Aided Design andComputer Aided Engineeringapplications.”

The CAD Learning Center is inBuilding 101, 2nd floor, columnEC13 and is available to approved

users 24 hours per day, 7 days perweek.

“We want to encourage alldirectorates to utilize this valuableresource,” said Eric Leonard,Human Resources. “This CADLearning Center is open toeveryone who is willing to invest inthemselves and the enterprise.Most of the CAD training will be inthe form of self-directed learningmaterials such as CBT (computerbased training) and there is no costto the users.”

Human Resources recognized firstline supervisors on June 11 at acommencement luncheon thatmarked the completion of theMichoud Space Systems First LineSupervisory Development Program.

“Being a first line supervisor isone of the toughest jobs there is,”said Hugh Farabaugh, HumanResources Director. “This trainingwas designed to prepare them for abig challenge.”

The program includes 24 trainingsessions, providing a wide view ofwhat a new supervisor needs toknow. Topics range from shop fold-ers and grievance procedures tocommunication and employee moti-vation.

In-house subject-matter expertsfacilitated the sessions, using a va-riety of teaching methods

For example, the session entitled“The Supervisor’s Role and Author-ity” used a panel of mid-level

related to the supervision of hourlypersonnel. In total, 25 supervisorscompleted Part I and 30 completedPart II.

All were recognized at the com-mencement luncheon where eachwas presented a Certificate ofAchievement by program facilitatorJerry Fabre, of the OrganizationDevelopment and Training team.

Mike Javery, Director of Manufacturing & Test, addressed the graduates ofthe course, offering personal tips for achieving success in a leadership role.

The CAD applications availablefor immediate use include CATIAand Pro-E. Future plans call forSDRC Master Series, Unigraphics,ComputerVision CADDS V, andAutoCAD, as well as CAEapplications to be added to theworkstations.

There are five Hewlett Packardand IBM workstations.

All use of the workstations in theCAD Learning Center is fortraining purposes only. Anyproduction use will violate thesoftware license agreements.

As a result, no production use ofthese workstations will be allowed.Production examples may bebrought in to the Center to enhancelearning, but nothing can leave theCenter. Explorer Post inSuperdome

Exploring is an activity sponsoredby the Boy Scouts of America to fa-miliarize teenage boys and girlswith career opportunities in a vari-ety of fields.

The Lockheed Martin Science andEngineering Explorer Post bringstogether experienced engineers withlocal high school students to famil-iarize them with career opportuni-ties in science and engineering dis-ciplines.

On May 15th, the Explorer Postwrapped up its year with a highprofile show at the Boy Scout GoodTurn Fair in the New OrleansSuperdome.

The students created displays onaeronautics, mechanical engineer-ing, computer technology and chem-istry. Lockheed Martin engineersvolunteered their time to demon-strate thermal protection materials,cryogenics and rocket propulsion,and they provided literature, pic-tures and explanations of ExternalTank and Reusable Launch Systemstechnologies to several thousandBoy Scouts and their families.

The Explorer Post, establishedtwo years ago as part of a corporate-wide initiative on Exploring, meetstwice a month during the schoolyear at the University of New Or-leans.

The Post has an urgent need for

adult advisors from within theLockheed Martin community. Theadult advisors are asked to sharetheir technical expertise along withtheir practical, real-life experiencesin science and technology with thesegifted boys and girls.

A ceremony was held on June 7 at Michoud Assembly Facility tocommission NASA’s new External Tank barge, Pegasus.At a dramatic moment during the ceremony, Marshall Space FlightCenter Deputy Director Carolyn Griner broke a bottle of champagneover the bow rail of the vessel as representatives of NASA, UnitedSpace Alliance and Lockheed Martin looked on.
