Location Sound II
Advantage:
Can record dialogue from a close perspective if you cannot get the shotgun close enough
Multiple actors, can’t cover all with boom
Disadvantages:
RF hits
Actor must wear mic and TX
If not hidden well it can ruin your shot
Limited perspective
Microphones: Lavs & Wireless
Microphones: Hiding Lavs and TX
The art of micing talent: minimize clothing rustle, hide the mic & the transmitter
Where to hide the mic: hat, hair, under clothes, pen? Different clothes, different techniques (button, t-shirts/sweaters, skin etc.)
Where to hide the transmitter: pocket, belt, bra, leg
Two kinds of rustle- across the mic capsule or noisy fabrics?
Pre-production: Discuss wardrobe and hair. Fabric choice, style (button down or t-shirt, skin tight or loose)
Mic Placement: head/hair, sternum 6”-8” from mouth. Collar last choice.
Does it matter what direction the mic capsule is pointed?
TX: under least amount of clothing as possible. Hopefully not touching skin. Secure.
Deal with clothing rustle.
Microphones: Hiding Lavs and TX
Microphones: Lavs & Wireless
Lavs should be thought of as BACKUP microphones. Always try to get a good position with the shotgun/boom first.
Lavs and Wireless – setting up
1. Test the equipment (new batteries)
2. Find out when it’s appropriate to mic the talent
3. Introduce yourself and explain what you’re doing
4. Mic them up!
5. Attach the TX and ask for a level check It’s so tiny!
(but that’s a good thing when it comes to lavaliers)
It’s also expensive!
Today’s exerciseCrew (4): Same as last week? mixer, assistant, 2 actors
Gear: Wireless, FP33 (mixer), 702T (recorder)
