Springs County, Wyoming, off State Route 120.

Executive Summary Located approximately 5 miles northwest of Thermopolis, the Painted Hills Ranch is accessed via State Route 120 to exit at mile marker 550. The property lies at the gateway to Cody, Riverton, Lander and Jackson. The property lies east of Cedar Ridge, a scenic red hills formation. Owl Creek bisects the main BLM grazing lands from the deeded lands. Comprised of 5,099.7 acres total, the ranch is owner-rated at 110 to 125 mother cows plus replacements. Approximately 120 acres, including 65 acres of State land, are flood irrigated meadows. Owl Creek, two wells and approximately 6 miles of buried water lines provide good water sources for both livestock and wildlife. The southeastern tip of the ranch adjoins the Town of Thermopolis and the Thermopolis Legion Golf Course. Thermopolis offers typical town amenities including two grocery stores, restaurants, a school system (K-12) and medical facilities. Thermopolis is home to Hot Springs State Park, which is well-known for its natural therapeutic hot springs. The park has a free bath house where the water is maintained at 104 degrees for therapeutic bathing. Considered a full-service park with comfort stations, swimming pools, hiking trails, fishing, and a boat ramp the park is also home to a small herd of bison.

Description of the Ranch The Painted Hills Ranch is comprised of four

pastures and irrigated meadows. Owl Creek

flows from west to east and is the source of

irrigation water and stock water. The ranch lies

east of the highway and is accessed off a two-

lane surfaced highway. There is a private all-

weather graveled road leading to the

headquarters, which includes a mobile home, a

large metal shop, a historic homestead, a calving

shed, and an older set of working corrals (water

& electricity are available at the corrals).

The ranch has territorial water rights and 1903

water rights from Owl Creek. Soils are primarily

loam in the Haverdad Loam Formation.

The BLM allotment is comprised of

approximately 1,945 acres rated at 268 AUMs.

The major portion of these grazing lands are

located north of Owl Creek.

The State land is comprised of 621.7 acres rated

at 257 AUMs; its southern boundary runs along

Owl Creek.

There is a 153-acre private lease with a recorded

easement (see map).

Stock water is pumped from a well at

headquarters into 11 watering tanks that are

strategically placed throughout the property for

approximately 3.5 miles (1¼”, 125 psi plastic

pipe).

The average annual precipitation is 10” to 12”

according to the NRCS. The average frost-free

period is 110-130 days. The elevation on the

ranch ranges from 4,580’ to 4,900’ above sea

level.

Two water storage tanks that provide domestic

water to and are owned by the Town of

Thermopolis, are located in the southwest corner

of the ranch. The ranch has been allotted 10 taps

off of these tanks with a fee* of $450 per tap (all

are 3/4”), the same as within the city limits.

*Tap fees are subject to change.

Wildlife found on the ranch and in the surrounding areas

includes mule deer, whitetail deer, antelope, pheasants

and chukars. Land-owner hunting permits are available.

The property is located in Mule Deer Hunt Area 127 and

Antelope Hunt Area 83. The northern portion of the ranch

has direct access to public lands.

HOT SPRINGS STATE PARK Offers Free Entrance

Over colorful terraces along the Big Horn River at Thermopolis flows water from mineral hot springs. More than 8,000 gallons flow over the terrace every 24 hours at a constant temperature of 128 degrees Fahrenheit. It is a full-service park with comfort stations, a volksmarch trail, fishing, and a boat ramp.

The Hot Springs State Park bison herd is the central herd for the Wyoming State Parks. During the late fall and winter months, the park bison are fed a daily supplement to insure good health. This feeding usually occurs at 8:30 a.m., giving the off-season visitor the unique opportunity to view the "Monarch of the Plains," up close.

The suspension foot bridge across the Bighorn River is commonly called "The Swinging Bridge." The bridge offers a unique vantage point from which to view the Bighorn River and mineral terrace.
