Cambodia CYA-Learning Center

Hosting NGO CYA SDG Education

Current Situation

CYA-Learning Center has been set up and enabled the opportunities for the children in the community for the education with multi-facility in the learning process plus the support of the LMTV volunteers has made the activities run by the center has been smoothly implemented; however, there is plenty of things to develop in the areas. Due to the fact of educational, environmental, and sustainable development, we are going to upgrade these features in the most implantable way.

Goals by 2018 to 2020

We want to create a community with good system of cleanliness that everyone is responsible in hygiene and sanitation. We also want to provide the community access in job creation for the women and the old people in the village to earn their income from their existing resources in order to reduce the migration from the hometown. We definitely want to see more children involve in education not only languages, but other subjects so sharpen their talents, and build up their potential for their future professions.

Existing Actions and Impact

We have hosted both groups, and international workcamps within the period of 1 week in minimum since 2014 to basically started up the center, and the LMTV volunteers to sustain the activities of education. The center has been home to about 200 local children having access to global education. CYA Learning Center has been recognized by the villagers, district people as the community center providing free access for both children and teenagers.

New Actions and Impact

• Workcamps and LTV volunteers are still in place of hosting as yearly project, but developing the feature of the workcamp activities:

• Intensive training to make the volunteers are more prepared within the local context. • Including the learning session within the workcamp period so that the volunteers can both

learn and help in the meaningful way. • Including more active community activities with practical actions particularly on local

tradition, rituality,, and the history.

Personal Actions • Collecting related information for the assets in implementing the activities. • Finding stakeholders to cooperate the related activities. • Write proper and clear vision for the projects.

China Sustainable Rural Development (Conghua)

Hosting NGO DWC SDG Poverty, Health, Climate Change Date made/revised 2016/06/10 Made by Julie Chao (Project manager in DWC and camp leader)

Current Situation

1. In rural Chinese villages, many men leave the village to work in the city, leaving behind unattended elders and women. Elderly and women feel useless with not much to do in the village.

2. Volunteers assist the villagers with farming and help with the processing of the village products to help increase tourist attraction. Volunteers also give villagers ideas on how to improve their eco tour as well as widen the views of the villagers so that they are more open-minded to new options to improve their quality of life.

3. Thus, villagers are improving on their eco-tour and feeling a sense of importance.

Goals by 2018 to 2020

1. Better constructions of roads and trails for the eco/nature tour. 2. Enhance volunteers’ and villagers knowledge and influence their action towards a more

sustainable lifestyle. 3. Decrease littering in the village by enhancing the villagers’ knowledge and efforts in

maintaining their home clean. 4. Help construct a learning centre in the village.

Existing Actions and Impact

International workcamps: we have had 5 past workcamps in the village and the villagers love our volunteers. With the help of the volunteers in farming and harvesting, the villagers can sell and earn more, increasing their income. They also gain knowledge about eco-tourism and organic farming from the volunteers. Villagers enjoy telling their stories about their roots to the volunteers and have an increase in self confidence. Villagers also are more open towards meeting people from different culture and hearing about other countries when at first, they focused more sharing about their own stories. Kids in the village are no longer as shy as before and would involve more with volunteers’ activities rather than before would observe the volunteer work.

New Actions and Impact

Upcoming workcamp will re-assess needs of the villagers and focus more on development and perfecting the nature trail in the village.

Personal Actions • Shared with friends. • Continued to organize projects and follow up with progress.

Macao The Feast of Na-Tcha

Hosting NGO MNCYA SDG Cities Date made/revised 2016/12/29 Made by Wiko Kok, Betty Hong (local project coordinator in MNCYA)

Current Situation

At present, for the majority of tourists that have visited or planning to visit Macao, the only tourist attraction seems to be “casinos”, that is also the reason why Macao is as renowned as “The Eastern Las Vegas” all over the world. However, Macao is not only made out of “casinos”, indeed we have much more to show, especially our unique culture when Chinese and Portuguese cultures encountered. But due to the prosperity of gambling industry, the shine of Macao World Heritage and traditional culture is always outshined. Macao is also a place that embraces different cultures in harmony and there are many treasurable stories to be unveiled. Besides letting people overseas to discover the hidden beauty of Macao, we also want to promote the idea of “world citizens” and “international voluntary services” in Macao. In recent years, voluntary service has become more and more popular in Macao, however this is only limited to local voluntary service, general public’s attitude towards international voluntary service is still conservative. From our experience, lots of Macao citizens are afraid or insecure of language barriers, foreign environment, or cultural differences, etc.

Page 10: Local SDGs 2016 - nvda-asia.orgnvda-asia.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Local-SDGs-2016.pdf · consist of the numbers of “Local SDGs” to be made in each IVS ... Projects agreement

Goals by 2018 to 2020

We would like to introduce Macao as a unique cultural centre to the world. Even if people who have not visited Macao casinos will still find Macao as a great place and would definitely want to revisit it. Besides the cooperation between local communities and authorities, it is also important for us to study the experience of other countries in world heritage protection. The participants in our workcamp are general from different careers and countries, they might be able to provide interesting thoughts for us after they have understood Macao by themselves and compared that with their own culture, and for sure these innovative and diverse thoughts will help us to improve in both the organization of workcamp and promotion of international volunteer services. Last but not the least, Macao International workcamp will also be a great opportunity for local volunteer to have a pre-experience with foreigners, and in hence help them to eliminate their fear and prejudice towards international voluntary work.

Existing Actions and Impact

From 2010 to 2016 we had hosted 7 workcamps with the theme of World Heritage Preservation. These past workcamps were hosted in great success and won good reputation from the participants

New Actions and Impact

In the future, we would like to continue to host Macao international workcamp – The Feast of Na-Tcha, so that both people from local community and from all the other parts of the world could learn more about Macao’s World Heritage.

Thailand Withee Tai

Hosting NGO DALAA SDG Health, Education Date made/revised 2016/12/22 Made by Alex

Current Situation

In the community of Withee Tai, members try to free themselves from any kind of slavery from the mind to the body and the entire society. “The important domains we try to be free from are education, economy, society and health. It should be starting by ourselves, then the family, the community (natural or chosen), the country, the world. We want to change the world by acting locally, not only dream. Everyone is responsible.” It was created 2 years ago, start to receive international volunteers 1 year ago and just got the official agreement to start their community learning center.

Goals by 2018 to 2020

Imagine a world where most people would REALLY put in practice those agreements: 1. Find our common ground within our differences. 2. Learn from others by observing inside ourselves. 3. Say what you do and do what you say. 4. Everything is based on the relationship of brotherhood. 5. Develop heart of ownership. 6. Positive thinking. (Get free from judging others). 7. Do not take side part from one or another when a conflict occurs.

Existing Actions and Impact

They are planting and collecting their food as much as possible, cooking with wood fire, build a clay house for volunteers, use alternative way for health, walking, yoga, and started a green market at the next small town. The community learning centre has now 9 children registered (who don’t need to go to regular school). Impact is to make participants responsible for themselves and others.
