Bill Ramer has been a locally lovedmember of Central Texas for many years, and has starred in some of Waco’s best-lovedtelevision commercials featuring himselfand the Unpainted Furniture mascot, BubbaGoodwood (yes, that name really happened). He purchased the infamous structure, built in1946 to serve as a hotel, to host his business ofbuilding commercial-grade display fixtures forstores, which were shipped worldwide. In 1970,realizing his skill for building and workingwith his hands, led him to start his very ownremodeling company. In 1972, he met hisbride, Jean Stubblefield, and when he changedher name, he also changed courses in hisprofessional life. Converting from wholesaleinto retail unfinished furniture, he started theUnpainted Furniture business.Unpainted Furniture has been catering to the

needs of Central Texans for nearly 30 years, including finished and unfinished catalogfurniture, custom-built furniture, completeantique restoration, recaning, repairing, stripping, and refinishing services as well. Afew years back the demand for unfinished

furniture decreased and so itwas time for some changes.LaSalle Shoppes was born 3years ago when Bill’s wife,Jean, retired from teachingwith 30 years under herbelt. With the help of theirdaughter, Katy, the shophas signed on over 150+vendors and expandedfrom one small littleshowroom into seven largeshowrooms, consuming most of the bottomfloor. Thankfully, this 25,000 sq.ft. buildinghas it’s own aura and history that provide aperfect setting for displaying novelties with alink to the past. Since the changes, Bill andJean’s children, Matthew and Katy, are nowtaking over their locally loved family business, but the whole family works together to ensurethat this entire building remains a fun, family-oriented, one-stoppe shoppe filled with one-of-a-kind treasures, a one-of-a-kind furniturebusiness and a one-of-a-kind story.

The Village Bakery, established in 1952, is best known as the “The First All-Czech Bakery in Texas”.Mimi Montgomery Irwin’s parents, Wendel and Georgia Montgomery, opened this bakery as a response to West residents’ complaints that they wereonly able to get kolaches during the annual church bazaar. The family’s Catholic priest encouraged Wendel to open a bakery, so he cleaned out astoreroom next to his pharmacy, (The Old Corner Store Drug) while Georgia made curtains and painted the interior. Wendel and Georgia’s mother,“Honey Morris”, put their heads together and the family recipe was redesigned for commercial distribution. Without surprise, “Honey’s” traditionalkolaches were an immediate sensation. The Village Bakery gained a state and international following and West’s reputation for this tasty treat earned itthe title of “Kolache Capital of Texas” from the state Legislature. Signature items include such authentic Czech pastries as the kolache, klobasniki, strudel, and buchta as well as a variety of pies, breads and cookies. Today, The Village Bakery continues a 62 yr tradition in providing authentic Czech pastries.

Mimi is a West native. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, West High School and graduated with Highest Honors from the University of Texasat Austin. Her fashion retailing career began at Foley’s in Houston and was followed by a 25 yr stint in NYC. She was a senior executive withFederated Merchandising Services, the New York corporate office of Federated Department Stores, (now Macy’s, Inc.). She is a board member andformer President of the Fashion Roundtable and serves on the advisory board of TexWorld USA. Gramercy Associates, her consulting company, wasestablished to provide forecasting information for women’s apparel. Mimi Irwin has been quoted and interviewed for a wide variety of publicationsfrom Women’s Wear Daily to the Wall Street Journal. She was a consultant and contributor to the Etiquette Advantage in Business by Peggy and PeterPost.

Aside from maintaining her involvement in the apparel industry and running the bakery, Mimi is also active in a variety of Central Texas cultural and civicorganizations. She is a Director of the Kiwanis Club of West, serves on the Standing Committee of the W R Poage Library and the McLennan CountyHistoric Commission.

What distinguishes one jewelry store from another? Is itplentiful unique and beautiful products? Great customer service?Reasonable prices? Perhaps it’s friendly, caring management. With Boozer’s Premier Diamonds & Time Pieces of Waco, it’s allthese things and so much more. You won’t have to travel far to find lots of beautiful jewelry atgreat prices. Boozer’s has nearly eight showcases of weddingrings — the store’s specialty — in over 100 different designs, including loose diamonds that can be customized to make anunforgettable ring they won’t ever want to take off.“The way I do business is different than big corporations that arebound by what they do,” said Brad Boozer, owner. Not only canhe get any designer you might want, but also, “if you bring mea picture or draw something on a paper, I can make that exactdesign,” he said. You can also take in your own ring or piece ofjewelry to have it reworked into something beautiful and new.Boozer’s carries everything from white and yellow gold toplatinum and precious stones. Its signature line, from revereddesigner Natalie K, features the most exquisite wedding ringsfrom which to choose, and Boozer‘s offers an assortment ofkarats, from a three-karat diamond up to a striking 10-karatdiamond. In fact, the Boozer name has been part of the Wacocommunity since 1968. Approximately 10 years ago, BradBoozer started his business at the Valley Mills location, buildingan impressive store from scratch. Today, it’s a lot more thanbeautiful jewelry that brings people in, although having such anamazing variety and large selection doesn’t hurt. It‘s also the relationships Brad Boozer builds with his clientelethat makes the owner and the store so unique and popular.Voted Waco’s Best Jewelry Store by Wacoan readers, BradBoozer also was nominated as one of the best jewelers in thecountry by the National Jewelers Network, a leader in settingthe standards for fine jewelers everywhere. (He even was invitedto speak at the network’s convention.)Boozer also has a complete open-door policy; his office is

surrounded by all-glass walls for easy access, making himselfavailable 24 hours a day, if needed. He offers an in-house repairshop, also encased in glass walls, so customers can view therepairs of precious jewels firsthand. An expert Rolex repairman,Boozer’s is often the first line of defense when it comes torepairing of fine jewelry. And you cannot buy something anywhere else for a better price— period,” said Brad Boozer, one large advantage of owningyour own jewelry store. If you find something anywhere else, whether online or in another store, Brad Boozer said he not onlywould meet that price but beat it as well.He calls it the Boozer guarantee: “Boozer’s is very competitivewith our diamond prices. You, the customer, are our mainconcern. So if you find a diamond any shape or size of like-kind and quality, we will not only meet the price we will beat it‘period.’ Just something to say you, the customer always comesfirst. “When it comes to purchasing heirlooms to pass down forgenerations to come, including the absolute best weddingrings or luxury timepieces, you can’t go wrong with Boozer’sJewelers. Boost Your Economy

Compare that to $40 at non-locally owned establish-ments and zero dollars when you buy online, and yourshopping priorities should be crystal clear.

LOCAL IMPACTMore money staying put in your area means more

funding for your schools, roads and hospitals. Taxrevenue created from local purchases goes back intocommunity improvements and new developmentopportunities.

In short, your money plays a major role in enhancingyour daily life and the lives of those around you –depending on where you spend it.

Additionally, small-business owners are more likely tomake social investments in the community by volun-teering at their child’s school, donating to local charitiesand hosting fundraising events, according to TheAmerican Small Business Coalition. Doing so allowsthese entrepreneurs to ingrain themselves into theircommunities and make it known that they are sensitiveto the needs of those around them.

From local music groups to youth sports teams,small-business owners are quick to offer their sponsor-ship and money to help support community groups. This helps create customer buy-in for business owners,as well as a reputation for genuinely caring about theircommunities.

HIRING LOCALAnd since local business owners hire local

workers – about half of all private sector workersare employed in small businesses, according to theBureau of Labor – money for taxes and wages stays inthe community, too.

Unemployment statistics are linked very closely tothe success or failure of small businesses, which meansthat your infusion of shopping money can also make apositive impact on a national level. This creates a strongconnection between workers and customers alike.

You’re more than just another number in the customer count when you visit a local business. Without your business, your local small-business ownerwould not be able to hire or retain as many local workers. From the owner down to the seasonal part-timer, all employees of small businesses depend onyour support.

It’s simple economics. As much as $75 out of every $100that you spend at locally owned businesses remain inyour area, according to recent studies.

Ruth McCanceMary Kay IndependentExecutive SeniorSales Director

Ruth McCance never dreamed an opportunity to earn a few extra dollars part time would turn into a lucrative 46 year career with Mary Kay.

In 1968, within six weeks of signing an Independent Beauty Consultant Agreement she was earning more money selling Mary Kay productsthan she was at her full-time job. Ruth flourished as a successful businesswoman, wife and mother of four daughters and attributes hersuccess to the flexibility this business allowed in providing financially for her family and allowing her to be there when they needed her.

Through the years, she has evolved from placing facial boxes (that allowed potential new customers to sign up for free facials) to utilizingthe internet for instant communications and online ordering.

Ruth has earned the use of 15 Mary Kay Career Cars and has been a Star Consultant 97 times!

She was driving to Minnesota to work with her consultants and decided flying would be quicker so, in1979 after earning her private pilot license Ruth purchased a 1972 Piper Cherokee with a 150 Lycomingengine. She changed the tail number to end in MK and had the airplane painted the distinctive “MaryKay pink” the only known Mary Kay pink plane in the world.

Her loyal customer base and growing business unit are thriving throughout the United States, Mexico Cityand Canada. Ruth’s hard work has enabled many women to build successful businesses for themselves.

Ruth trusts the Mary Kay product and customers believe in her. “I trust the Mary Kay Company to use the latest and most advancedtechnology to produce the best products possible,” says McCance.

POSITIVE EXPERIENCELocal business owners treat you with respect and

kindness because they need your support. Yourmoney keeps their dreams alive, their families fedand their lights on. It also helps fuel their creativityand passion. Without innovation and a love for theirbusiness, independent retailers don’t have much ofchance to succeed in the highly competitive fight foryourdollar.

CONVERSATIONLocal owners are quick to talk with you and ask

about your life because they are genuinely inter-ested in learning about their customers. Gaining abetter understating of their target audience helpsowners improve their services, which, in turn, boosts their bottom line.

Conversation can be extra helpful if you’re try-ing to complete a home improvement project. One trip to your local hardware store can often beless time-consuming and more informative thanone to a big box operation.

REAL PEOPLEIf you have a question for your local business

owner, odds are you can track them down on thephone with one or two calls. And you can bet you’llactually hear a human voice when you make yourcall. Finding courteous assistance without having topunch through a hoard of automated “pleaseholds?” What a novel concept.

Small-business owners understand that customerservice means sustained business. They are willingto make themselves available to help you work

through any inquiries or product issues you arehaving. So pick up your phone and give them a call. They’re waiting to assist you.

No Pressure on CustomersFor local businesses, it’s all about the customer experience. This means

friendly attitudes and a focus on you, not your dollars. You aren’t likelyto find quota-driven salespeople around every corner at your local

independent business.
